This is something I've started in my blog, but I thought I'd share it with everyone here as well.  Everyone has their own method of picking games.  Some flip a coin.  Some pick who's been on the longest winning streak.  Some people pick the home team.

I've decided to try to use the football pythagorean theorm to pick games.  Basically it projects a W-L record based on comparing points scored to points given up.  Since we've only got one week's worth of games to sample from, this week will probably be the worst of the bunch.  For example, I expect some 0-1 teams to beat some 1-0 teams this week, which won't be predicted by my simple method.  It's a flaw, but a known one.

This week's winners?

CHI, KC, MIN, NO, HOU, OAK, NE, TB, BAL, WAS, DAL, NYJ, SD, SF, ATL

I'd think the TB and NYJ predictions are likely wrong, but since I'm going with raw numbers, I'm not going to switch them.  Oakland will have a short week and a long trip heading to miami, but miami sucks at home.  I'd think a manning lead denver could beat atlanta too.

This week, I'm also predicting Baltimore to beat Da Bears in the SB (though a Houston - San Fran SB seems more likely).

I think Winterclaw is a spy, and that "CHI, KC, MIN, NO, HOU, OAK, NE, TB, BAL, WAS, DAL, NYJ, SD, SF, ATL" is a secret code. There was a lot of this sort of thing going on in WW2 (World War 2, not Wardrobe Wizard 2). The letter groups probably refer to military units.

"Baltimore to beat Da Bears" is obviously a prediction of an imminent military engagement between Pakistan and Russia. Every one knows that the bear is a symbol of Russia, and that Balti is a Pakistani dish. It's like when Sir Charles Napier sent the telegram "Forgive me father, for I have sinned", actually referring to his conquest of the Indian province of Sindh.

SouthEast - SouthEast Bronx? Clearly an expat or a traitor. Full disclosure: I had no interest in football until I worked in a place where the fans of 'God's Team' were such annoying braggarts I decided to pick another team and root for them. Naturally, I picked the 'One for the Thumb' guys, thinking they had to be the best. Little did I know it would be decades before they finally got the thumb ring :-) I still bleed Black and Gold though.

I agree with everything you said.  Alas, work has already begun on a stadium in the South Bay. They'll still be the 49ers, but yes, sad, very, very sad.

A few weeks ago I went to my 50th year high school reunion from the long defunct Polytechnic High School, right across the street from the pre-Candlestick home of the 49ers, Kezar Stadium, which still stands proudly. One of my dearest memories is one-time quarterback Y A Tittle patting me on the head once when my gym class visited the 49ers workout facility there, right across the street, but virtually miles ahead. I was heartbroken when he eventually got traded to the New York Giants Football Team!

Wow, never knew that Tittle played for the Niners. When I was out there in prehistoric times, I drove by Kezar once. I would have thought that they'd have demolished it decades ago. Be happy they're still in the area. These days, teams loyalty is to whoever will build them a taxpayer funded Roman edifice. Then again, the (baseball) Giants fans in NY would have said that began a long time ago :-)

Yeah, Polytechnic was literally right across the street from Kezar. We used to have to do our laps in gym class around that place. Often we ran into (also literally) 49er players as they went to and fro, although they did all their training inside Kezar. I graduated in June '62, went right into Air Force, got married, etc., etc. Some of the first Dirty Harry was filmed in Kezar. Poly was a great school and had a lot of notable alumni (as which longtime school doesn't of course): George Seifert, longtime 49er (head) coach graduated a few years before I did. The actress Vonetta Magee was in my homeroom, although she was 4 years older, apparently had been home schooled while grooming her modeling and acting career.  You wanna talk about "GORGEOUS?!?!"  Sadly she perished from cancer a couple years back.

Funny thing several of the teachers there were actually published authors under various pseudonyms, which I only learned years later. The Polytechnic buildings were ruled "not earthquake safe" circa 1966-67. The main building still stands and was retrofitted - I think - but all else demolished and the franchise became McAteer High over on the other side of town.

Very interesting. I saw some of Miss McGee's films - didn't know that she had passed.

I'm afraid that most of my occasional trips to SF when I lived in the BA were limited to feckless attempts at minor debauchery on Market street and North Beach. Hopefully I will get back out there before needing HoveRound to navigate. I'd be a bit worried about TBO hitting, but there are certainly far worse places to check out from :-)

True, in re TBO, but that will happen when it happens. Seems there is never a large migration out when one does happen of whatever size. Frankly, I'd be more worried about the street crime in The City the last few years.  Not so many murders as a few years back, but LOTS of muggings and robberies, not to mention the car thefts! Over in the East Bay, particularly Oakland and Richmond, murders in the form of seemingly random shootings seemed to have been deemed an artform with a multitude of new devotees.

Of course, that doesn't stop Raiders fans from attending. Looks like they might be off to another terrible start this year, but probably won't be changing coaches as quickly as in the past (Rest in Peace, Al Davis).
