Hi, I have been reading tutors since 6am and it 11now and I stuck.  I have made my shirt, and auto grouped it to my donor bones but when I got back to the pose tab the shirt does not move (fit) with the K4 model. Am I missing a step? Is there something I need to do after auto group?

Here is a screen shot of where I am at.

Thanks

First is it conformed to K4?

Second, can you use the bend, twist and side to side dials on the individual body parts... meaning if you select the lShldr (on the shirt not K4) and bend it, does it bend?

Yes they bend.

Then the only thing I can think of is it's not conformed. When you conform it in the setup room and then return to the Pose Room the clothing is just "there" in the scene. You have to choose the Figure > Conform To command to conform it to your figure.

When I click the "Comform to" the shirt does conform to the K4 and will move with the K4 like it should. However now the shirt no longer fits K4 correct. Before I go back and try to fix this. Best Guess, is my problem with set up bone area or the object shirt itself. The shirt fit perfectly before I did the set up room.  ~ Thanks

It looks like the bones got shifted somehow. If you are using Poser Pro 2012 there is a way to fix it without going back into the setup room. With the shirt selected, choose Figure > copy joint Zones From, and choose your character. That will probably fix it.

I have poser pro 2012 and if I click copy joint zone it is better but not perfect however I loose the shirt working with K4. I tried to go back and click conform to again but that takes it back to where I started. I think I going to start over and try to work through all this and see what happens.

Question, I read one tutor that said to delete bone that are not being used on the shirt and one that said leave the extra's alone. Which do all of you do?  Delete or not?

I meant the shirt would not move with k4.

I closed poser and reopened it and when I click copy joint the shirt now moved with k4 but one sleeve still does not fit correctly. If I raise the arms the shirt comes apart where the auto groups in the set up room. The under arm comes a part and you can see k4 body.

I Hope I explain the correct. My head is just spinning about this. Texture I understand. I spend the last few months trying out and learning modeling software and now I have to learn this rigging.

I’m heading out for a few hours for lunch and a break. Let all this reading I’ve done on rigging for the last couple of day soak in.

However, any advice is much appreciated!!

Is K4 installed to a Poser runtime, or did you install it to a DAZ runtime?

I have had this same kind of problem when I used K4 (especially with the Chibi morphs) from a DAZ runtime for rigging.

It went away when I installed K4 directly into the Poser runtime instead.

When you modeled, did you zero the K4 figure and export an obj to use as a mannequin?

When you load K4 in poser, did you zero the figure?  If not, did you try selecting the shirt>body and zero the figure after you conformed?

Quote - I have poser pro 2012 and if I click copy joint zone it is better but not perfect however I loose the shirt working with K4. I tried to go back and click conform to again but that takes it back to where I started.

I take it this means that it still isn't conforming correctly, and that the right arm is not fitting correctly.  I might be wrong, but it looks like the problem might be that the chest bone is off center (sort of looks that way from your "conformed" screen shot). It looks like it might be tilted toward the character's left arm (your right).

Another problem that I see is that it appears that you have some polygons that aren't grouped. The reason that I suspect this is because your skeleton included the bones for the shoulders, but didn't include the bones for the forearm.   The autogrouping was done before you deleted the bones, and there were probably some polygons that were automatically assigned to the forearm that no longer have a bone associated with it because you deleted those bones. It's most evident this is true if you look at the character's left arm, and you see an indented area near the end of the sleeve. Willing to bet those polygons are assigned to the forearm, and there is something similar going on with the other sleeve.

So you have one of two solutions: Either keep the forearm bones in (don't delete anything that has polygons assigned to it), or later modify your shirt groups so that the polygons that you now have assigned to the forearms are instead assigned to the shoulders. But then if you go the latter route, you'll have to modify the falloff zones of the shoulders.

Those are two areas that visually look suspicious. There ARE ways to fix these issues with the group editor and the joint editor, but will take a bit more 'splaining. 8-)

Welcome to the world of Poser rigging! There's a lot to it, but don't give up, every piece of clothing is a learning experience!

Is this "pokethrough" type stuff, or is it that the seam is actually coming apart?

Deecey has offered excellent advice, I will try to offer some but from another angle...sometimes seeing something from another viewpoint makes the picture become clearer.

Bones - Once they are created in the Setup room just leave them be. Editing or deleting bones can be left for later once you have the conforming item working correctly...so lets get that one first. 😉

Import - With K4 Zeroed out does the Shirt import properly onto the stage fitting around K4 with no poke-throughs? For conforming to work correctly the Shirt should import perfectly fitting K4, if it doesn't then your base obj file is causing you some problems.

Setup Room - Use either the K4 figure or if there is a Developer Rig for K4 use that, also let Poser group your obj file as well as apply bones.

Copy the joints from K4 to your shirt and now try conforming it to K4. What happens?

Comitted to excellence through art.

Yeah I was going to suggest that as well. I suspect the bulk of the issues were introduced when trying to delete the bones.

Either that, or the auto grouping needs some cleaning up here and there.

NO-------- dynamic clothing produces amateurish result in animation (Beowolf). Conforming with displacement, bump and normals is the way to go

PhilC ( ) posted Sat, 20 October 2012 at 5:26 PM

Similar to my previous comment, best to first check that the imported shirt OBJ correctly fits the fully zero'ed figure. Import with none of the import option boxes selected to check.

If it does, then next thing to check:-

Delete the imported shirt object.
Load the shirt figure.
Ensure that the shirt is the selected figure in the scene.
Go to the Poser menu Figure > Zero figure

Does it fit now?

If yes, then go Edit > Memorize Figure
This will remove any preset bends.

Next conform to the K4 figure.

Does it fit now?

If you are doing this in PP2012, 'Zero Figure' is in the Figure menu (not to be confused with 'Zero Rotations' in the Joint Editor). Things changed at one point, and old tutorials may be pre the current incarnation of 'Zero Figure'.

Follow the advice in PhilC's above post, and report the results. There is a very high likelyhood that this will solve at least one of your problems. I can't stress too strongly how important it is that you follow PhilC's advice, it is an ESSENTIAL step in trouble shooting conforming clothing.

I followed all the directions and it is very very close. I have a few holes in the shirt in the upper chest around the neck but that's it. Now what can I do to fix those?

Thanks

Update: I scaled the chest just a small bit and conformed again and it all worked great. Then I made a new prop in the grouping tool and added the shirt to the library figures. I closed it all out and the reloaded the K4 and shirt however the shirt fit but would not move with the Kids 4. Am I saving the shirt wrong?

I sounds like you just saved the static prop created by the grouping tool.

If your clothing figure does not quite fit the assigned figure but you are able to somehow edit its shape to fit you then need to proceed as follows.

Conform the shirt to the fully zeroed base figure.
File > Export > Wavefront OBJ (the shirt figure)
Select these export options:-
-- Weld body part seams
-- Include body part names in polygon groups

Save so as to overwrite the OBJ file that is currently being used by the shirt. (Suggest that you back up the original.

You can find out where the shirt OBJ file is by opening the shirt CR2 file in any text editor such as Notepad. The OBJ path will be in the line starting with "figureResFile"

Or you can save as a new file then edit the figureResFile lines in the CR2 file accordingly. Note that there will be two instances of the figureResFile line, you need to edit them both.

(I anticipate sending you a revised file later today.)

I did what you said with export and replace the object however when I open the shirt again while it fits the k4 figure, the shirt will not move with the k4 unless I go back and hit conform to.

I started over today from scratch and I can get the shirt to conform but it will not save correct even when do an export and over write the obj file.

Thoughts?

I started over today from scratch and I can get the shirt to conform but it will not save correct even when do an export and over write the obj file.

Thoughts?

In brief, here are the steps you should follow:

  1. Zero your character in your scene. It should be in the default position, default body shape (no morphs set), and default pose, so that when you import your OBJ you can immediately determine if the clothing fits properly.

  2. Import your clothing OBJ

  3. Check to make sure the OBJ fits around the figure BEFORE it is rigged. If it does, go into the setup room.

  4. Drag and drop the character rig from the library onto the clothing. Poser will ask if you want to regroup the object based on the skeleton. You've been choosing Yes here, because it seems as though your OBJ file does not already have groups.

  5. At this point, seeing as you are still learning, don't delete any bones. You just want to learn about conforming at this point. So go back to the setup room. Your clothing should now be a conforming figure.

  6. With the clothing selected, first choose Figure > Zero Figure.

  7. Again, with the clothing still selected, choose Edit > Memorize > Figure.

  8. With the BODY actor of the clothing selected, open the Properties palette. The NAME of the figure defaults to the name that was assigned to the skeleton (for example, it might say Victoria 4, or Kids 4, or something like that). Change the name to something that is more appropriate for your clothing (like Kids Shirt).

  9. Now that your clothing is zeroed and memorized and has a new name assigned to it, save it to the library.

At this point, save your existing scene in case you want to go back to it for some reason. After you save it, delete the copy of the clothing that you already have in your scene. You want to test and make sure the clothing was saved to the library correctly. Drag and drop the copy you saved into the Library onto the figure in your scene (in other words, drag the thumbnail for your shirt from the library, and then release the mouse button when your cursor is positioned over the figure you want to conform the clothing to). If you add the clothing that way it SHOULD automatically conform to the character.

That is how you START with conformers. There is some cleanup work that should be done afterward, but we're trying to help you with step 1 first.

I did everything you said step by step.

Then I pick the shirt and it work perfectly. Then I pick the shirt >body click conform to and do the conform to kids 4. The shirt moves with the kids 4 actor. Then I saved the shirt to the figure library with a new name. Delete the shirt from kids 4 actor and drag and drop on the new shirt that has been conformed to kids 4 that I added to the library after conforming.  And while it fits perfectly, it will not moved with the kids 4 actor.

I have to doing something wrong.

It should definitely move with the character if you followed all the steps to create the conformer. Before you do it again, there IS a possiblity that you didn't drop it over the character when you pulled it into the scene from the library.  So let's double-check that it is conformed.  Select the shirt, and choose Figure > Conform To. If it is in fact conformed, then it should show that it's conformed to The Kids 4.

If it's not conformed it will say "None."  So then you'll need to click the Down arrow and choose The Kids 4.

When I drag it over the kid 4 actor, it does conform to.  But when I save the conform to shirt, the conforming to k4 does not stay with the shirt. If the shirt was just for me then I could conform it each time but shouldn't the conform stay with the shirt so I can give it away on my web site with textures?

Here where I am going with this. I have used corel draw and adobe products since 1995 making free printables but no one wants free printables any longer since everyone can make their own so easier now. I am trying to learn how to make kids 4 and other cute actors clothing so I can offer it on my web site in replace of free printables and possibly to sell one day.

What I am leading towards here is the conform to part of the shirt should stay with kids shirt so who ever used it won't have to conform to also, correct?

OH!!!! If I am understanding your question right, you are asking if there is a way to save the clothing so that it automatically conforms when you add it to a scene?  Am I understanding that right?

No ... the user has to conform a piece of clothing to a figure manually (most especially if there are multiple figures in a scene).  There are two ways to conform clothing. The quickest way is to drag and drop the clothing from the Library onto the figure you want to have wear it.

The second way (the old way) is to click on the clothing, select the Figure > Conform To command, and then select the figure that you want to wear the clothing.

So if this is the only issue that you now have (that you have to manually conform it to the figure), then no you aren't doing anything wrong, that's how it works. 8-)

So the main question now is ... after you conform it to the Kids again, does the shirt fit the figure properly, and follow the figure the way it should when you pose it?

That clear a lot up. I thought the conform was suppose to stay with the clothing.

Then what do I need to learn so the clothing I make fits the actor for the person who wants to use it without them having to conform the clothing? Or is that important?

Well, let me ask you this ... I'm trying to determine if I am understanding you correctly.

I'm assuming that you have used other figures and purchased or downloaded clothing yourself?  If you buy clothing for V4, for example, it is made to fit V4. But you still have to conform it to the V4 in your scene, correct?

Are you asking if there is something that you can do to make it work differently, so that you don't HAVE to conform it to the figure?  Or is there something else relating to something that you have purchased, and you're trying to figure out how to make it work?

Another question .. I wonder if part of the problem is in understanding what you mean by "conform to" ...

"Conforming" a piece of clothing to a figure simply means that you "attach" the clothing to the figure so that when you pose the figure, the clothing automatically follows it.

Now ... if you are talking about clothing that fits an actor (for example, if you made a dress for V4, but the character has the Voluptuous morph dialed in, and you are wondering how you can get your clothing to fit that body shape automatically), that is a whole new ballgame.  Making the clothing "conforming" is the first step in creating content. There is still more for you to learn, but we are trying to take it one step at a time.

So it might help if you explain a little better what you mean by "conform to." I think perhaps if we better understand what you're trying to do, we might be better able to point you in the right direction.

I found where my line of thinking was wrong.

Let me give you some background of where I am at. I have been using DAZ and carrara for a year or so now. Daz has gone totally Genesis crazy and deleted all their old tutors. I also had poser pro 2012 and after reading several tutors on poser, I decided to learn poser software. However I only been learning the Philc software, rigging and a few other features. I had not messed much with loading other clothing. On Daz the clothing is made to auto fit and I assumed Poser worked the same way. I didn't realize till I just now tested a Poser world shirts that I have to conform to with all clothing.

God Bless you for getting me to understand this correct. Now I have the shirt made, I just have to make the textures and figure out how to package it up to offer on my web page. I can't thank you enough.
