Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 02 4:55 pm)
Since Reality 3 is still in development, those are probably questions only Paolo could answer. If it functions similarly to Reality 2, your lights should transfer, but you will probably need to adjust intensities in Reality/Lux (very easy to do while rendering with Lux).
For materials, I would guess that Paolo is programming in the intelegence to detect SSS and set up the materials properly in Lux from what I've read. Currently Reality 32 uses a system to detect a shader set and use the shaders from the online acsel shader database if one has been submitted.
Hope this helps.

I think you will find lighting to be much easier than in Poser. The image above (click to see larger size) was my first Reality/Lux render done using one light (sun). It was a simple test to see how light behaved in Lux. It's not the best render by any means, but it does give you a good idea about how light behaves in Lux - I was pleasantly suprised with my first attempt with Lux.

Quote - Reality for DAZ had their own lights. There were separate light sets sold for Reality, but it doesn't utilize any of your existing Poser lights. You can add them to your scene, but Reality for DAZ simply replaced each light as a distant light.
This is not entirely exact.
Reality for Studio uses all the lights of Studio, except for the UberEnvironment stuff. Spots, Point lights, and Distant lights are all recognized and used. In addition Reality has its own Mesh light, which is used to model real-world lights, and its own IBL, which is much more sophisticated than Studio's built-in IBL.
Reality does not, in any circumstance, replace a Studio light with a distant light. In fact I suggested many time to avoid distant lights at all costs. The only exception is the Sun, which is a special case. The Sun is a Distant Light that is named "Sun" and that it is used to model a real, physical sun with atmosphere.
Hope this helps.

Quote - I use alot of lighting sets like IDL studio in PP2012 is Reality 3 going to be able to use these sets or am I going to make new lighting in Reality when its released nxt year thats the first thing.
the second is will Reality automatically detect SSS or will we have to activate like in firefly.
Ethier way I am certainly intrested to get Reality 3 when released it looks fun but complex
Poser lights will be recognized and converted to the corresponding Reality/Lux lights. Keep in mind though that light setups made for a renderer don't alweays translate to another renderer. With Lux you need fewer lights than with a biased renderer and so the IDL setup might be overkill or just use the "wrong" type of lights for Lux. In any case, I have a couple of ideas on how to make the transition as smooth as possible.
I also plan on working with the IDL author(s) to address any possible issue.
Regarding SSS it will be recognized automatically. No options set in Firefly will have anything to do with Reality or Lux, the materials are what drive the process.
And for your last comment, I think that Reality will make things actually a lot easier :)
Cheers.
Paolo

One thing you need to remember about Luxrender is that ANY exporter can only make an approximation of what it reads in Poser and then convert it to a Luxrender file (IOW, a file that unly Luxrender can use and understand). Things will be converted to the best of the exporter's ability but it can't read a Poser file like Poser can read a Poser file. All the Luxrender exporters (including Reality 3 I'm certain) will do a good job to make a comparable approximation to a Luxrender file, but it's still NOT a Poser file.I guess what I'm saying is that Luxrender cannot read a Poser file directly. The exporter has to interpret what's going on in Poser and then approximate that in a format that Luxrender can understand since they're two different programs.
Hope that made sense ;).
Edit: the attached image was made using Snarlygribbly's exporter (one sun outside and the bulbs in the chandeliers as emitters inside), but it would be the same as Reality 3 I'd imagine (although I had to tell that exporter what I wanted in the way of Luxrender materials, which I actually kinda like...I guess I'm a control freak...lol). Trust me when I tell you this image did NOT look the same in Poser...lol. Luxrender does a much better job at realistic looking images than Firefly ever could, albeit much more slowly.
The only reason I like more control over my Lux materials is that I know a bit about Luxrender materials, but I realize that most people won't and won't be interesting in finding out. LOL

One more thing: what I'd like to see in Reality 3 is that there be sliders for every element that a Luxrender material can possess: glass, velvet, metal, glossy, diffuse, coatings, absorbtion depth, etc with the roughness adjustments, in additon to simple conversions. That would make it much more valuable to me since I like ultimate control of my materials but the preview means a lot to me. If all those elements are there, I will very likely buy the plugin ;). I know Paolo is thorough and makes a pleasant interface while making it as easy as possible for the user. I just wish it wasn't SO easy as to interfere with my material adjustments. LOL.
Yeah, I actually find Luxrender materials much easier to understand than Poser materials...go figure. LOL. And if there's a preview and you can SEE what's going on, that would make it much, much easier for everyone to adjust the materials themselves ;). I don't want to see something dumbed down to the point where only the people that know absolutely nothing about Luxrender can use it. It should also cater somewhat to ppl that do know quite a bit about Luxrender. It would be really nice. Hehe.
