Subject: learning to make figures

Ok boys and girls, freeks, geeks and lords of the riggings. I am in need of a master, a trainer to assist me in learning how to make a posable figure. I have several ideas and figure designs I would like to make move but can't figure out the rigging. I am working with P6 and have the manual but can't seem to make one and one come up with two. every time I do what it says to do (and yes I made the mushroom) and make the bones name the bones and the lot 1+1= phhhtttt Nothing. I keep getting the same you have parts not assigned to figure crap. I don't know what i'm doing wrong. is there anyone out there willing to show me what I am doing wrong?

youtube has tutorails.DAZ Studio 4 would have better rigs then P6.

Blender probably has better rigs then DS4

sorry Rorr, I don't have either one I work with poser. Can't aford daz4 yet

Netrunner ( ) posted Sun, 31 March 2013 at 8:27 AM

I work with Poser too, but my version is way newer than P6 ;)

If you still use P6 I would give DAZ 4 a try.

DAZ Studio Pro 4.5 is free to download at the DAZ-3D homepage!!!

I guess it's going to be a close guarded secret to make figures. Everyone keeps telling me to get Daz, I don't want daz... I need someone williang to mentor me in figure creation. I can make props but don't know the order inwhich to get the figures made correct. These are the steps I am useing:

  1. make the prop model and name the parts. Example mushroom ; stem , stem 2 and so on.

  2. load prop into poser and select setup room after saving it as a prop.

  3. once in setup room, select bone creation tool and make bones.

  4. open peramiters window and name the internal bones and visable name the same. example stem1 for the internal and visable name.

  5. open group editor window and try to get body parts to match bone names.

This is where everthing goes nuts. I make the body part names match the bone names but when I try to leave the setup room to test it out, I keep getting the same thing, polygons not grouped to bones. I know this isn't rocket science and i'm probably just overlooking a simple step but I'm following the manual to the letter and have been trying for over a year. My patience are running thin. Can anyone that makes figures (people, vehicles, whatever) that has moving parts please help me figure out what i'm doing wrong. I've had people offer to rig things for me for a share of the proffits or a freebe. I don't want this. I need to be able to do the rigging myself but need help getting to that point.

4) open peramiters window and name the internal bones and visable name the same. example stem1 for the internal and visable name.

  • Internal names don't need to be the same as the "visable" name; However, internal names must match the part's names and case. There should be a named part in the obj. geometry for each identically named bone.

5) open group editor window and try to get body parts to match bone names.

  • Here is a problem. Ideally the body parts and their names should be established before the obj. is imported into Poser, and certainly before you attempt to give it bones.

What modeler do you use? Some allow you to create "parts" (including free programs like Blender and Wings if I'm not mistaken).

It's not like don't have the modeling skills folks. This is one of the items I wish to turn into a figure in time.

I use Wings and yes it does allow me to name the parts. I do this before I load into poser.

If you get a warning that there are unassigned polygons in the figure, take it into the Pose room anyway. Translate the figure and see what polygons are left behind.

There's a much, much simpler way to make posable figures and you don't need to use the Setup Room at all.

I use Wings and this is how I do it:

Once the figure is completed, save each movable part out as an obj, keeping the size and position as they should be on the model.

Import each piece into Poser with all the import options unchecked.

Use the Hierarchy Editor to set the dependencies.

Save a pz3 before doing anything else.

Select the main part of the figure (Hip or whatever everything else is ultimately parented to) and, if necessary, scale to Poser's size.  If you parented everything correctly, all the other parts will scale and stay in their correct places.  If not, go back to 100% scale, make the necessary changes in the Hierarchy Editor and go again.

When you're happy with everything, hit the Create New Figure button.

Give the model a useful name.

New Poser

Go to the New Figures folder in Poser and find your new model.

Load it and save it again immediately.  This forces Poser to create an obj file, which has been stored in RAM up til now.

Go to each body part in turn and, using the Parameters tab, turn off all bends (if you're making a robotic figure, as in your picture above, otherwise don't turn 'em off).

Open the Joint Editor, select the joint you want to work on and make any necessary adjustments.

Save the figure.

You can tidy things up using CR2Editor to hide/rename dials, set up ERC and so forth.  Another good move is to relocate the obj to a folder in Geometries and change the reference in the CR2.

That's about the size of it.  Easy, ain't it?

I too use Poser 6.  See my latest vid at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9zKp_YbO4w

You need to get yourself the Practical Poser 6 book.  That book has helped me a lot with making Poser figures.  You know how to make OBJ models, so you're halfway there already.  There are almost no YouTube videos that explain how to do it.  The Poser 6 manual is basically just for showing how to use the GUI.

Attached Link: Phi Builder

There's another method. You could download phi builder. It takes about ten minutes to learn to use it. Load your obj in Phi Builder. The obj. should be located in a Runtime geometry folder. Arange your hierarchy and choose your rotation order for the joints. Save the "hier" file.  Import the obj. in Poser. Find "Convert Hier File" in the File menu and run the hier for your figure. Save the figure. Open a new scene and find your figure in the "New Figures" folder. From there you can work with the joint editor. All of the bones have been created.

For a humanoid figure the rotation orders is as follows:

Torso or vertical sections are yzx

Ams or horizontal left to right are xzy

Feet or horizontal front to back are zyx

I think that's from the Smith Micro site.

Sam, I tried it your way three times and got the same results. I don't know what I did wrong. I followed your words to the letter and loaded each piece into poser seperatly.

"Once the figure is completed, save each movable part out as an obj, keeping the size and position as they should be on the model.Import each piece into Poser with all the import options unchecked."

I then used the hierarchy editor like you said to set the dependencies. Then I hit Create new Figure and named it and saved it as a pz3. I then cleared the screen and found my new figure and opened it. All that was there 3 times in a row was the bottom of the mushroom stem. nothing else. what went wrong

Make sure that you have the parent selected in the hierarchy editor and not one of the children when you click on 'create new figure'. It sounds like that's what happened. If you have the parent selected, everything that is parented to it becomes part of the new figure. If you have one of the children selected, only that part becomes the new figure, since there is nothing parented to it.

hhfspinball ( ) posted Wed, 03 April 2013 at 5:44 PM

Rokket, I did select the parent. I also did one where I parented the parts useing the set parent to make my own without the hierarchy editor and still all I get is the parent, no children.

SamTherapy ( ) posted Wed, 03 April 2013 at 7:16 PM

A few common mistakes...

Do you have spaces in your body part names?

Have you given them ridiculously long names?

Have you named any part "Body"?

Have you inadvertently duplicated names?

I've done all of these, except "Body" and they're all guaranteed to hose your figure.

Sam I did name the parts, No they weren't long. I made a Mushroom with three stem parts and a cap. I named them:

stem1, stem2, stem3 and cap. Stem1 is the parent ending with the cap. simple and easy. the only thing I get is the part "stem1"

What could have gone wrong? Did you drag stem2, stem3 and cap onto stem1 in the hierarchy? Did you press the "Create New Figure" button in the Hierarchy Editor? Did you clear the scene and look for the new figure in the "New Figures" folder?

There may actually be a bug in Poser... I have to run another test to be sure, but the massage chair that I created did the same thing. Granted it's a lot more complicated than a 3 part mushroom, but I did everything right:

  1. I grouped it in Wings

  2. imported into Poser

  3. went into the group editor and spawned props

4.hierarchy editor and parented parts, selected the main parent, created a new figure....

BAM

When I loaded it onto the stage, there was only a couple parts there.

I am going to redo it later on today (it's 7:45 am here in the Philippines) after I have my coffee and I will post the results.

If I get the same thing 2 times in a row, I will put a ticket in with SM...

Which version of Poser are you using, rokket? I used Poser Pro 2012 on my own mushroom and it worked perfectly.

Download my free stuff here: http://www.renderosity.com/homepage.php?page=2&userid=323368

rokket ( ) posted Fri, 05 April 2013 at 9:10 PM

I redid it with my chair in Poser 9, and this time it worked out. All I have to do is adjust the fallout zones and center the joints and I can use it.

But... even after going through all that work, I decided to release my freebie as a static prop instead of a rigged figure. This is because the one used in real life isn't adjusted to fit the customer once it's set up. I simply reworked it.

Hello,

I am not a good modeller at all, but I may suggest the book:

Secrets of Figure Creation with Poser 5 by BL Render

The second thing to consider is to buy al least Poser 8 because with the type of figure that you create, you probably have to set some dependencies between parts and this can be very easy with the Dependent Parameters Tool. See my tutorial in the Freestuff section

That's the best explanation of using Wings to create figures that I've seen yet!  I use Wings, and this seems very self explanatory...

I notice you didn't mention object axes.  I suppose you'd set that up in the joint editor after creating a figure?  I was always bummed that Wings doesn't seem to have an editable object center point making it necessary to set it in Poser.

#1 rule

to learn start simple.

make real simple meshes to learn on

make a pipe ,long stick ,long cylinder, put 2 bones in the pipe.to bend the pipe

if you just can't get the pipe to bend. post the pipe so a P6 riggers can see what went wrong.

I know how bloddy agravating it can be to try n try and get no where.
I've broken key boards before.

but keep at it ya get there .don't give up.

Well folks I finally managed to make the bloddy mushroom move and all the bones were accepted with the mesh when I exited the setup room. gonna try it again to see if I can reproduce it or if it was just a fluke of luck. Thanks for all the help. I found that if I name the parts in wings and import the whole figure into Poser I can go into the group edititor and re-name the parts there before entering into the setup room. This gives the bones something to match to. I was doing it backwards so to speak. I know I shouldn't have to rename the parts in the group edititor but if it works for me thats a win in my book. Gonna keep it simple and practice with simple props and work my way up. again thanks for all the help. I can finally see a use for this other than making props and rooms.
