Photoshop vs Nodes:  shouldn't we use them in conjunction?  Photoshop to create and the nodes to enhance what a Photoshop file sends to a jpg or png?  I'm just discovering the value of the different nodes (thanks to the same Webinar series that includes Xurge's modeling/texturing set), and they're wonderful enhancers.  Nothing can really disguise a poorly made texture, but the nodes can work magic with run of the mill textures (like those made by yours truly).

*And I believe I'm just reiterating what Surreality said, but she's right.  Even a photoshop displacement map, exported from Zbrush, can bloat a texture.

--And if a texture is top-notch, the nodes can make it unbelievably good.  I love Xurge's texture video, but also like Sveva's tutorial series.  She shows how to take one or two nodes and make a texture shine.

Back on topic:  I wonder what the Dawn people are doing.  Queen Mab's render revved up my interest.

A thought for the HW people -- things might go more smoothly if the site was opened to registration, before anything was offered for sale or download.  That way, we could all get registered beforehand.

If there's a forum though, I guess there'll have to be separate registration for that, so it's six to one, half dozen to the other.  :-)

What I meant is something like this.

By using a mask/alpha map, I can set up multiple completely different shaders in one single material zone, controlled by where it's black and where it's white in the alpha map.

Here I'm using subsurface scatter on Antonia's skin, and a velvet material on her second-skin panties. You can see I used multiple Blender nodes: one to mix the diffuse materials, one to mix the different speculars, one to mix the bump.

So, does anyone know what the official release date will be yet?

Fringewood ( ) posted Fri, 05 July 2013 at 1:51 PM

Realistically, and avoiding the dreaded S word, I don't expect Dawn's public release for a few weeks yet.  A moderately complex package for a figure, including QA, takes about a month to six weeks from start to release, if things go smoothly.  They probably won't wait the entire time for a full barrage release, but they also don't want too much lag between initial release and a substancial wave of support.

As much as I dislike advising this, "Have some patience."  I dislike advising it because the attention span of this community is generally four days, optimum.  That means don't announce a release more than four days ahead of time, or the enthusiasm will begin to wane before the release arrives.  Many sellers in this community have not learned this.

Now in Dawn's case, the announcement was made to draw support from the content makers more than it was to draw public attention.  You can tell this as there are yet no ads out about the release.

So users, be patient, go do some renders, get off your pins and needles.  There is obviously still a lot of work to be done before Dawn finds your runtime.

Great Uncle LROG

As I stated, it is my opinion, nothing official.

I was referring to the store site, not here in the R'osity forum.  Not only are there no ads there yet, there's no site yet. Dawn and the Hivewire site is an enormous undertaking.  It takes an enormous amount of labor to bring a release like this all together.

My point is that with distribution to the content creators taking place now, the public release is still logically a ways off.  Yes, the public release could be timed illogically and happen tomorrow, but I wouldn't bet on it, because there is too much experience in this production crew to act that illogically.  The logical thing to do is to time the release of the figure just prior to the release of a wave of supporting items.

Let's look at what has to happen.  First, you want to get your store ready to roll for the release.  That means the I's dotted and the T's crossed technically, not 100% perfect, but good enough not to cause customer riots and sour grapes when it opens.  Then you need to get your content creators all on the same page, orientation on what to expect from the store, the submission process, NDA's, etc.  Since not all the content creators are present at any given time, this is staggered and takes some time.  Questions have to be answered for a certain comfort level to be reached and submissions to begin.

Then you want a certain level of items at the point of release, created by the core team, followed by a certain level of additional support in short order.  You need that flow to keep up the enthusiasm of the community.  So a certain number of third party (CA) of products need to be ready or close to ready to sell when the public event takes place.

And you need to throw in a few days off for the crew so they don't burn out before it all begins.

All this takes time, weeks at a minimum.

Yes, this is my projection, not the official word.  Personally, I'm not holding my breath until mid-month, at the earliest.  Maybe even later, depending on what I see in the weeks ahead.

surreality ( ) posted Fri, 05 July 2013 at 3:32 PM

From experience with pre-release items and peeks behind many a curtain (important note: elsewhere(s), not at Hivewire, I have no clue there), I'd say Fringewood's assertions are very much in line with what I've seen and been involved with in the past.

I know it takes me roughly 2-3 weeks to produce a character set; it can sometimes take considerably longer, sometimes much less time if things happen to flow 'just so'. (Pathetic note: I also have zero life outside of work, so I might work longer hours than someone who has to tend kids or a different dayjob or, you know, does things other than poke 3D apps with their time. ;) )

Seemingly simple clothing items may take roughly the same amount of time, as what is 'simple' visually is not always equally simple in terms of function or code-side complexity. Big or complex clothing sets? I've seen those take up to half a year. (I wouldn't necessarily expect to see that kind of thing at public release time for precisely that reason.)

Hi, if you have a look at this http://www.sharecg.com/v/66637/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/DAZ-Studio-Shader-For-S.E.Asian-Shields download, I believe that the person who made it uses layers in ShaderMixer. If you downloaded it you would be able to import it in to ShaderMixer to play with.

Thanks for posting your network. Looking at the Blender blocks they have two inputs and Blending which is controlled by a numeric value.

The Mix brick in DS ShaderMixer is similar but has slightly more options.

See image below Base and Layer on this brick would most likely be the same as Input 1 and Input 2 not having used the nodes much(I only have Poser 7) and find it very hard to use so some of this is educated guesses based on my knowledge of ShaderMixer.

Instead of blending we have Type and operation. The one shown in the brick image is colour which is one I use a lot and allows you to either pick colours or plug in image maps similar to what you have in your network. I'm not sure which settings you would need as I've never tried to create a layered shader but if you have a look at the file above it will probably give more detail on how the network would work.

Types include: float, colour, point, vector and normal

Operations is very similar to the blend mode in photoshop and includes Layer mix, Layer add, Layer subtract, Layer Multiply, Layer Dissolve and Layer screen.

The alpha I tend to use to apply a black and white image. For example if I applied a seamless tile like my fleurdelis pattern with an image brick and a tiler brick I can add a pattern using two different colours and the tiler brick will control the size of the repeat.

Hope this is useful...as I said before I'm not an expert but I do know some of the basics. If you have any  questions ask and if I can I will help.

edited to add just looking at your network again I would think that you would plug your black and white image into the alpha. You could also add displacement into the same network using a Displacement root brick and the std displacement brick. You could either use a different image brick and tiler or the same one for the surface material.

I think this will achieve what you want...it would still need some more playing to add things like specular but will achieve what you originally asked about the layering of a second skin with bump etc...

Hope this answers your original question...

I've beta tested before for months on various projects, so I do know how long it takes, and know about NDA's.

Steve or someone else from the team will give info as and where they deem it necessary.

All the best.

And as I said, I don't presume to speak for the dev team.  I'm just addressing those who expect to have Dawn to play with on this coming Monday, warning that it's probably not in their best interest to expect it that soon.  (Went and wrote the S word.  Slap my face.)

Quote - By using a mask/alpha map, I can set up multiple completely different shaders in one single material zone, controlled by where it's black and where it's white in the alpha map.

Here I'm using subsurface scatter on Antonia's skin, and a velvet material on her second-skin panties. You can see I used multiple Blender nodes: one to mix the diffuse materials, one to mix the different speculars, one to mix the bump.

We can replicate that with the Shader Mixer, it's just going to take quite a few more bricks to do it, as we don't have half of the nodes/bricks Poser does, so we have to get inventive, but if you suck at maths (ie me) it can be quite challenging.
