Let me start to say I'm a Mac guy, so obviously anything I try is going to have issues. That's the nature of PC to Mac.

I've been able to run VWD in Parallels with Poser Pro 2014. Still, it's a tad slow. I have Crossover which is also an emulator, but I can set it up for a specific application, not run an entire OS, just the parts that are necessary. This uses Wine to achieve this.

So, I'm trying to create a working version of VWDClothAndHair.exe, but I'm finding that it doesn't work well if you don't activate it from Poser. Now, I understand that you shouldn't do this as you need Poser to work with it, but to get it to setup with an emulator like this, it has to be able to open it and close it, even if it produces an error saying you can't do this. The problem that happens is that once you open it this way, it won't let you quit it. You can choose 'Quit' and you can hit the 'Close' button, but then an error pops up and it never quits. Since I don't understand French, all I can do it run it through Google translate: Access to the address 0064F537 violation in module ' VWD ' . Reading the address 0000000C.

I've also added a screenshot of Crossover trying to create a working emulator. Poser just gives a NULL error for DoScript().

If this could be resolved to allow it to quit, that would be great. Secondly, if it could check to see if the app is already running and just use it, that would also help.

@MacSavers : Excuse me, I don't understand what I can do for you. Under Windows, the program closes normally and I can't see what I can do else. If you have an idea about how I can help you, please tell it to me.

@fivecat, Thank you for this video. It is always a great pleasure to see simulations made with VWD.

No reply, no reply, no reply !!!! Generally, we are tired when we have too many replies. Personnaly, I am tired because I have no reply.

I should really like to say you that the selling process goes on, but to do that, I would need to have at least some informations and I have nothing. Sorry.

If you double-click the VWD program without Poser, it gives an error and won't let you quit.

@MacSavers : VWD is a simple program. In Windows, I can start the program and close it simply. The problem you have, comes from the emulator.

I added a min distance for the importation of dynamic elements. This allows to import clothes or hair that I could not import before without loosing any rigidity. I think it is a great progress for importing all kind of conforming clothes and hair, even if they are very complex and have a great quantity of vertices.

No reply!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, bugger. That keeps it from working on the Mac without having to purchase a full set of emulator/windows. It's probably the Wine build that's not allowing it to work right.

@NolosQuinn : I just sent a message to Jenn Blake and Eric VanDycke asking them to tell me whether or not there is a possibility of selling VWD on their respective sites. I await the end of the next week and, if there is no response, I begin to sell the program myself.

Making some tests for creating a video, I realized that I had introduced a bug in the latest version of the program. This bug makes the stiffening by vertices ineffective. Early in the week I will make a new version that corrects this error. This version will also introduce a minimum size in the springs generation for simulating very complex objects easily.

VWD - when it is done, if you send me the software, I will try and see if it opens in crossover. Crossover does not require a windows installation, it just fools the softaware into thinking wndows is installed. It's a really good option for mac users. crossover is not the same as virtualization. I probably won't be able to look at it for the next 3 weeks though. AFter that I'll give it a shot if you like. Love esther

@estherau : I suppose you have made some tests with the demo version. The final version is not different of the demo version, there are only a few functions that were deleted. If the demo version works correctly and you can generate a personal code in the "About" tab, everything should work the same way. This test would be very interesting for all the Mac users.

I have used it successfully in the past for some poser applications like morph manager for example.

Even though Crossover works with a lot of programs, there are still quite a few it won't work with. I haven't tried Poser in it since I have the Mac version. However, since I'm on the Mac, Bryce no longer works with my current version of the Mac OS. I tried Crossover, but it doesn't play well with that either.

Since Crossover is using Wine, which is a port of a Linux emulator, it's not completely 100% Windows Compatible. I also don't think there are hooks between Python/Poser and Crossover/VWD to make it work that way. Kinda disappointing, but perhaps we'll find a better solution later. I'd like to also see VWD work with Daz Studio some day since DS is free and Poser isn't. Having DS free allows me to spend my money on content and accessories like VWD.

macsavers ( ) posted Thu, 05 November 2015 at 2:04 PM

I have a question about Gravity in VWD. When I turn it off, the simulation seems off. The clothing tends to fly out a bit and not fall back very quickly. However, if I leave it on with the default of 40, it pulls the garment off the model.

I don't want anything to teach me on how Gravity works in VWD, but it would be nice to have it at a default that would simulate Earth Gravity at say 1.0. I don't think 40 is Earth Gravity, but after playing with it quite a lot, I'm not sure what the number needs to be to equal Earth Gravity. If you could set it to Earth Gravity as the default and have it be 1.0 in the field and have 0.0 being no gravity at all, that would help a ton. Obviously 2.0 would be twice the gravity. That would make much more sense to first time users.

VirtualWorldDynamics ( ) posted Sun, 08 November 2015 at 12:12 PM · edited Sun, 08 November 2015 at 12:15 PM

@MacSavers : I asked me the question to set the Earth gravity in VWD. This valeur is 9.81 m/s2. In fact, I would have put this value to 10. This value is an acceleration. it depends of the time(s) and of the size(m). All the simulations are not made using the same gravity because it depends of the timestep used in the simulation. It depends also of the scale used for the simulation. Poser and Daz Studio use different scales to import their characters, if you want to be conform the the earth gravity, you have to use different gravities in these software. The value of 40 used in VWD generates simultations that give correct results compared to the reality. I can put this value to 10, but I will have to multiply this value to 4 to be conform to the reality.

I have sent a new demo version to the Renderosity's freestuff. This version allows to import dynamic actors having big meshes. These meshes generated errors in the old versions. The one solution was to reduce the rigidity distance to a value lower than 1.0 for the clothes and lower to 0.5 for the hair. The obtained results was often not realistic. It is now possible to keep this value that gives very good results and apply a minimun distance for the springs that allows to reduce the numbers of springs without change the behaviour of the cloth or the hair. This version corrects some bugs integrated in the last version concerning the Added rigidity by neighborhood.

I have received a message from Jenn who actually wants to send VWD. I have to explain how we can work to realize this action. It is me who have to be sufficiently clear. I thank her for her patience.

Probably just too close to the Poser 11 release window for them to give it much real consideration. The announcement of VWD was very close to the release of Poser 11 sneak peeks, so I have to assume SM were already very much counting on an imminent release. And there likely won't be another release of Poser for another two years, unless SM for some reason decide to change their release cycle.

The problem I'm having with the gravity set to 40 is that it rips the dress off the model. It just seems way to strong. I used the Pretty Party dress on V4 as I wanted to test a simple dress item with thin shoulder straps. If I do a dynamic or static simulation with no animation at all, it pulls the dress completely off the body. It also does a very odd deformation near the breasts.

Biscuits ( ) posted Mon, 09 November 2015 at 2:50 PM

For some hairmodels I even use 60 for gravity, to prevent that the hair looks like it's floating under water.

So, what you are saying is that the gravity has to be set differently for each item. What gravity do you use for dresses?

macsavers ( ) posted Mon, 09 November 2015 at 3:32 PM

It almost seems like there needs to be a weight modifier of sort so we can set the weight versus gravity per item.

Biscuits ( ) posted Tue, 10 November 2015 at 2:57 AM · edited Tue, 10 November 2015 at 3:02 AM

Yes, that's well said, I indeed use it as a weight modifier. For example with dresses, a static simulation, I use the default gravity value. But while simming an animation with a swirly turn and the dress goes monroe style up, then increase the gravity.

Note this is how I use it, but I'm not sure it was intended this way. I only care about the endresult render as I don't render actual animations.

When I leave the gravity on at 40, I get terrible deformation around the breast area and if the dress has thin straps at all, it gets completely pulled off the character. How are you able to keep that from happening?

VirtualWorldDynamics ( ) posted Tue, 10 November 2015 at 1:46 PM

@MacSavers : could you publish some videos to show the result of your simulations. I have made many simulations with these values with all kind of clothes and hair and i never had the results you say have. I would like really see how behave the cloth.

@Biscuits : have you tried to modify the rigidity of the cloth or the hair to avoid to change the gravity?

I have made some modifications in the program about the gravity and the node masses. I have put the gravity to 10 for conforming it to the Earth gravity. In the computations, the Gravity value is multiplied by 4. I have added a node mass at the moment of the creation of a dynamics object. This value is set to 1.0 by default. I also have added a mass modification by vertices. This feature allows to use different masses for the nodes in the same cloth. This corresponds to the reality when a cloth is made with different matérials. I accelerate the computation of the elastic function which was very slow.

I see that my documentation is incomplete and I didn't made enough videos to show the functionnalities of VWD. I know that the program has to be improved but I feel that many functions are not well understood. My next goal is to make demo videos showing the capabilities of VWD and how to use it. You will have to listen my horrible accent. ;-))

I think the program has everything in it like you are saying. We just don't understand it enough to take advantage of it. That was one of my reasons for changing the gravity number to 1.0 as that makes sense to us neophytes. I understand that under the hood it would have to be modified to the 40, but to a user, 1.0 makes some kind of sense without any explanation whereas 40 means nothing to anyone and just confuses us. Instead of looking for another feature to fix the problem, I went immediately to Gravity since I didn't understand why the number was 40. Now that it's been explained, I understand it, but you will have to explain this to every single user of the program where if you change it to 1.0 and to the math under the hood, it would not require any explanation.

I've included links to a Static simulation and an Animation simulation. These are screen recordings, so it's not from VWD or Poser, it's what I actually see. This is also using Parallels with Windows 10, but I've also done it directly in Windows without Parallels (basically shutting down the Mac and booting directly into Windows) and the results are the same.

You will also notice the odd distortion around the breasts. This is using Victoria 4 with NO morphs and the Party Pretty V-Neck Dress from Daz3D.
