Subject: Major problems - too many for thread title

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity

Last year I decided to try Studio but couldn't get on with it, had too much else to do so uninstalled it. Had problems with getting content installed, too.

I thought I'd give it another shot, seeing the announcement for a new build. This time around, I tried 5 times to get it installed and working, all with no success. Well, the prog would install, but the content folder was nowhere to be found. I decided to try the Install Manager, see if that made any difference.

So far, not great. Got the prog installed, and I thought I'd managed to get the Genesis figure stuff in there, too. All that happened was, despite the stuff showing up in the listings, I get an error message saying "Genesis 2 (or 3 or whatever) duf cannot be found. Looked in the relevant folder, there's the duf, large as life.

Pretty pissed off about it now. I'm an intelligent guy, I know my way around most things but Studio seems to be deliberately obscure and difficult for the sake of it.

I've uninstalled everything and hope to get it all working... finally. All I want are the Genesis 2 and 3 figures and morphs, with their clothes, as and when I buy 'em.

I need to know, are there any caveats (as with Poser) as to where stuff should be installed? What do I actually need to install, since all I want is the Genesis figures? How do I install stuff manually, should the fit ever take me to do this?

Please, please don't point me to video tutes; I cannot watch them. For whatever reason, the info never goes in from a video tute. I'm much better with stuff written down.

Well, as with Poser content should not go in the application folder - especially under Windows. Other than that, as long as you have access rights to the folder the location should be fine. Security software does matter - at least until recently ZoneAlarm was a problem for PostgreSQL (or vice versa) for example.

Where is the content now, and what are your content directories - Edit>Preferences>Content tab>Content Directory Manager?

SamTherapy ( ) posted Mon, 09 January 2017 at 4:19 PM

As I mentioned, I uninstalled everything again. I wondered if somehow the install had been faulty. The location was C:Users/PaulMyDocuments.

Usually the path, for DIM, would be C:/Users/Public/Docuemnts/My Daz 3D Library/. DS defaults to that and to, for you, C://Users/Paul/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library/. Any other path would ahve to be manually added to DS (like adding an external library in Poser) - the quickest route is to right-click on Daz Studio Formats/Poser Formats in the Content Library pane and choose the Add ... directory option - however, adding plain C://Users/Paul/Documents/ would not be good as it creates nested content directories - a content directory inside another content - which causes ambiguity when creating the relative paths for saved scenes (I suspect that's why Poser used to write absolute paths for content not in the default Runtime).

Thanks for that; I'll look into it more tomorrow and report back when I have a reinstall up and running. Hopefully. :)

Online Now!

ST, decide whether you install content manually or with DIM. Any DAZ based content zip will have that additional content folder that all the other folders will be nested into. DIM will strip and install all the subfolders from that content folder. If you use the manual approach, you will need to physically export all those subfolders, ignore the top most content folder. As RHaseltine points out, you need to determine where to install the content, follow through with that installation, and make sure DS has that Library folder linked. DIM refers My DAZ 3D Library while DS create My Library. Go figure.

Right then...

New install, all paths checked and following the layout specified by RHaseltine.

Stuff installed:

Attempted to load Genesis 3 female and got the "duf does not exist" error again.

What am I doing wrong? Are there other things I need to install?

Oh, ignore the popup in the middle of the install manager, it's not relevant; it just appeared as I was doing the old Alt-PrintScrn thing.

Well, the pop up shows it went to the My Daz 3D Library folder, which is one of the defaults DS will use on a new install. However, it also says Connect Installed (which apparently can be misassigned). What I wanted to see was the folders assigned as content directories in DS - for that go to Edit>Preferences, click the Content tab, and in that click the Content Directory Manager - if you expand the entries under Curent you should see the older names for DAZ Studio and for Poser content, please post a screenshot of that. Just as a double-check, could you also click the gear icon at top-right in Install Manager, go to the Installation tab in that, and take a screenshot.

Thanks, Laurie. I'll do that soon as I know what the devil Hangouts is. :D

Screenshots on the way, RH.

Maybe I am fundamentally stupid or doing something horrendously wrong.

It's been my experience with DIM that most of the time things install fine, but once in awhile something goes awry...did you happen to check the log file after you installed to see if something went wrong when installing the Genesis stuff? I had a problem with some shoes awhile back myself...

All installed and working. Thanks guys for advice and a special thanks to Laurie for taking the time to walk me through the process and ensure the reinstall went as it should.

No idea why but the whole install paths were totally screwed up.

I have no idea why there's a language advisory on that last post. I didn't put one there.

I struggled for a long time with this. After using Poser since 1999 it was a shock to install with Studio. It's actually too easy, to the point of being difficult.

I have found that making a different directory for non-DAZ products and freebies is important. It is not good to manually install into DIM-based directories.

Glad to see you have benefited from some great help and can start using Studio!
