The Break Room F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 02 3:18 am)
I'm not allowed to post there. LOL
And I realize there's nothing that can be done here, but at least it's getting the idea out โ and let's face it: reps from both companies read these fora, whether or not they're willing to admit it. Maybe one of them will, maybe one of their fans will see this and pass it along. Anything's possible. :-)

I can't wrap my mind around studio no matter how much I try. Old dog, new trick maybe since I've been using Poser since P4 but I agree that they are missing a huge portion of the market, imo. There are so many items I would have bought if they worked in Poser.
Totally agree. Have Studio, try to use Studio, can't get on with Studio. The thing is, I'd buy a shedload of their stuff if I could get it working in Poser. Oh well.
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
Studio to Poser converter ? Yea that could work, though why does it have to be made by daz, or even SM ?
Things like the original Universal Texture Converter where made by 3D Universe and Dimension 3d makes some excellent utility's. So it's not outside the realms of possibility's for someone else to make something like this.
Indeed I'd certainly pay for a tool like this.
Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

Yeah but if 3DU got involved they'd deliberately not convert the genitals for "ethical" reasons. From an outfit that used to include a camel toe morph on all their characters, I found that laughable but there you go.

Hi
What the OP suggests will never happen. The reasons for this are many But I will only mention the obvious one.
Tech support!! the moment you create a specific plugin to export to a specific program
that you DO NOT control, Well you become "obligated" at least on some ethical level, to provide support for that plugin which involves having that other program installed and PAYING your dev team to
keep up with every Decimal point upgrade that the owners of that other
program decide to implement, any one of which might break your
plugins functionality.
Daz provides export options to various generic 3D formats such as FBX,.obj,MDD , Alembic etc.
However when there is a problem getting your Alembic mesh or G3 female FBX rig to work properly in Autodesk Maya you are on your own in figuring out how to resolve it in your Autodesk/Maxon or whatever program.
as DAZ has only promised you the ability to export to ""Industry Standard" formats This is the reality, Now and going forward ,for every 3D program that exports to other formats.
Pose users ,for a variety of reasons, prefer to stay within poser. Fine..... Live ....with.... your.....choices!!.
You are no more entitled to specific other party support from DAZ or anyone else than Mac OS or linux "Distro 1028747rhf 3985" users are entitled to support from Autodesk etc.
And the "financial argument" is moot The bean counters at DAZ or any other company have made thier own determination about the cost effectiveness of supporting poser and have clearly decide it is not cost effective. let it go.
I bought some older stuff and it'd be nice to have a copy of Poser to use some of the items that won't work in daz studio. Dynamic anything for instance. But using Daz Studio doesn't pain me too much. I still can use lots of older stuff and the newer stuff and get most things fitted to a character. What would be great is an auto installer for Renderosity stuff. But I manage to install it by hand and then I can find it so I suppose the current way has advantages too.
RitaCeleste, a lot of times you can find earlier versions of Poser on eBay for cheap. And I don't mean u8sed copies, they sell unopened copies of Poser 9, 10, etc for sometimes surprisingly low prices.

One sure way to test if there is truly a demand for a general utility to convert Daz content to poser (without the need to use Daz studio I assume)
Would be a ask some professional coders what the cost would be and start a Kickstarter or Go fund me page with a goal amount based on what the pro coders have indicated.
I don't imagine such a project would be cheap particularly with continued tech support factored in.
My suggestion would be to find out what features Poser would need to load the DAZ content, then contact Rafael Torres in order to get that added to Poser. The DSON spec is used to define a DAZ scene and the DSON importer for Poser was the converter; but since there was so much resistance to that your best bet is now to have poser load in industry standards like FBX and work from there. Anyone can use the DSON spec to create a converter, but it won't do much if the software doesn't have the same features. SM should already have the list that DAZ gave them to make the content work, so unless it got lost in transit to Portugal they should already have it. DAZ has already gave SM ways to load content without using DAZ Studio by switching over to industry standards for export, they just need to do the work for importing. A lot of Wolf359 says is spot on, and the Poser market is tiny now as far as the DAZ3D store is concerned (as that's the only place that counts when it comes to talking about whether it's feasible to do something). It falls to a 3rd party or SM to make with the OP suggests happen, as DAZ has already done work for a converter and pretty much abandoned it for Genesis 3.
Looking at the stuff I have to fix to get even static objects that were built for Poser into D/S I think it would be difficult to write a utility that would cover it all. These two programs have diverged quite a bit. It isn't just the rigging of characters, cameras, lights, and shaders all work quite differently, and D/S has gone to a completely different directory "structure" (considering it defaults to using a database). I don't use Poser, but I can tell you that buying a newer Poser product to use in D/S is quite a bit more challenging than it once was. There was a time where all you had to worry about was shaders and dynamics, there are quite a few other issues that pop up these days.
And lets be honest. this fixation with getting Daz content into poser is not really about DAZ studio native Chairs and lamps.
It is all about the tall pretty white girl (AKA the genesis 3 Female) and her content. and being able to use it like native poser content in a poser runtime without ever installing Daz studio.
This is never going to happen.
It could get a lot easier actually for us.
There's a new open source app that basically let's you copy and paste between apps. As in ctrlC in one, ctrlV in the other.
Right now it's working for blender, sketchup, and a few other apps.
OK, it's just mesh and uvs. But that's all I need anyway to go between apps myself... (I'm an architectual modeler rather than a slave to the figures....)
But I wonder if the code could be forked and adapted......
Referring to this perhaps?? https://www.blendernation.com/2017/05/06/od_copypasteexternal-copies-pastes-3d-data-apps/
You would still have to: install DAZ studio
create scene in DAZ studio Load poses Character morphs etc inside DAZ studio and paste into poser where your Daz IRay Materials will be useless and have to be manually replaced.
and repeat entire procees if you want a different pose.
How is this any less grunt work than exporting as .obj from DS using the poser scale preset????
never said you'd not have to install studio.. you brought that up... and for ME, doing ARCHTECTURAL models it'll be a god send. you did'nt read my post fully did you? you missed this "But that's all ** I ** need anyway to go between apps myself... (I'm an architectual modeler rather than a slave to the figures....)"
I read your post. A Daz studio native "Architectural" prop will still require the same manual work copied and pasted or exported from DS. ......so not really "easier" And a DS export at least assures the correct scale for poser from the built-in pre-set.

True - there are certain Genesis3 morphs I would love to have; and skin colour is irrelevant.

OK, so DAZ has made it very clear that it has little if any interest in selling to the Poser community.
Frankly, I consider this a huge mistake โ here's why.
DAZ doesnt charge for its software, Poser does, so it's not like DAZ would be losing money if it worked up some kind of adaptor that would allow Poser users to BUY (please note the operative word here, BUY) Studio items. All those folks insisting that it's up to Smith Micro are kinda missing the point: SM wouldnt make any money off this, DAZ would. Seems to me that in a market this small, DAZ would like as much commerce as it can get, so its rationale for not providing some kind of utility makes less and less logical sense.
"But why should DAZ do all the work here?" Because DAZ will be realizing the income, that's why. It could stand to make a small fortune in increased revenue by working up this utility so its vendors dont have to go through the process of providing things in dual platforms.
The reason I bring this up comes from a convo I had recently with a long-time vendor โ both here and at DAZ โ who's on the verge of just throwing in the towel on the whole thing and provided a bit of behind-the-scenes info on how things are going. Frankly, it's long past time to end this silly divide, and it's long past time for DAZ to see the money it could be making here. It shouldnt be up to the vendors, nor should it be up to a third party when DAZ is the one that would be reaping in the profits.
It just seems like good business sense to do this.
