New Poser Users Help F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 02 10:01 am)
New to Poser? Ask questions here for expert help!
Uh-oh. After installation I got a "Poser Pro executable file has stopped working" dialog box wherein I either close the program or check online for a solution later, and close the program. I installed everything on the program disc.
i do have Poser Pro 2010 installed on this machine, It's a 32 bit installation.
If you are referring to Windows 8.1; Smith Micro already informed me that Poser 11 will run on Windows 8. (But they didn't mention the compatibility mode it should be in.)
All for now, as I've contacted the company again via email, but don't expect to hear from them until after the july 4th holiday.
Thanks, hborre; M
In windows 7 I found that some scripts only run in 32 bit mode so I loaded both Poser 32 and 64 (this is game developer. I have 11 but haven't loaded yet). D3D 'TANLINES' AND other scripts need the 32 bit emulator version. Most of the time I am running in 64 bit mode, but for scripts I occasionally open 32. I haven't had any prpblems with my runtime, but they are separate from the base directory (except some characters Like Victoria).

I don't have Poser 11 but I do run both Game Dev and Poser 2014 on Windows 7 Ultimate with a stack of scripts and I have never had any issues in this respect. I don't think I have used the 32bit program for over 4 years. That said your scripts will of course be different to mine so perhaps you are just unlucky with the ones you run.
I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.
your responses are Interesting.
I got P11 to run, and when I loaded the Runtimes of my earlier versions into the library, not everything showed up.
figures I created--which are dependent on having morphs and props included--in my "New Figures" folder (where i usually store them), were not all there.
Maybe I should just uninstall and go with 32 bit across the board.
but I can tell I'm really gonna have to hit the manual again. I bought it especially because of the Superfly renderer.
Anyway, a guy at Smith Micro had me get the Download Manager; which, obviously requires an internet connection for Poser to install the updates. The machine I use for Poser, I don't want online. So I suppose I'll have to connect it just for the updates; unless there's a manual install option for them.
I love digital. Open one can of worms and you get another can of worms.

While going 32bit across the board is an option you miss out on a great deal, particularly in the amount of memory that can be addressed. As I said I do not have Poser 11 but running it in 32 bit sound like you are missing out by shackling it, if I have not run Poser 2014 in 32bit there is no way I would pay for something as advanced as Poser 11 only to run it in 32bit.

I have Poser Pro 11 installed on my Win7 Pro laptop, and have no problems with any of my scripts, or acessing my other Runtimes, while running PP11 in 64-bit.
That said, however, I do NOT install to C:Program Files since upgrading to Win7 Pro from WinXP on my old laptop. I install all software (that allows you to choose where you want it installed) to directories at the root C: drive. IOW, all my 2D software is installed to C:2D Applications, and all my 3D software is installed to C:3D Applications. That way I don't have to worry about where my content is, because it's never in the C:Program Files directory, which has been a problem since Windows came out with Vista.

I have a similar procedure except I allow the application only on the C drive as it is an SSD, all non essential programs go on drive D. All my runtimes are on Drive E which is also an SSD while all WIP, scenes and renders are on Drive K which, like drive D, is a conventional hard drive. This means I have no problems accessing the folders and I also keep the writes to the SSDs to a minimum.

Well, I've tried Download Manager--by downloading first, finding the path to where the download went (on my internet PC), then copying those files (updates) to a flash drive, (and also a copy of Download Manager), and transferring all to my PC that has Poser 11 on it--I thought I could put the updates in a correct folder there and install the D.L.M. on that computer, thereby hitting Install to bring them into Poser. But, after I put the files in the correct folder under 'User', and then entered my serial #, I got "Could not resolve host:www.producturlsupport.com"...so I guess since that other PC isn't connected to the internet, I can't complete this?
I'm not a new Poser user, in general, but I am a new Poser 11 user, and things have changed since I installed Poser 9. M

In other words, it didn't accept my serial number, and I made sure it was typed correctly.

You are right, things have changed since Poser 9, well since Game Dev really which was a sort of upgrade to Poser 2014. What we were not told at the time was SM had added a deactivation feature which deactivated Poser if it had not phoned home in the last 90 days. This was only found after, guess what, 90 days.
There have been changes since then which should make Poser 11 an improvement in this respect, certainly more reliable than Game Dev. Unfortunately I cannot help as, having purchased Game Dev, I reverted to poser 2014 that did not have the feature and I have no plans to upgrade to Poser 11.
Someone should be able to help you though and, once sorted Poser 11 seems to be well loved by it's users, sadly you are not alone on the activation problem though, but it should be worth climbing the hurdle.

Thanks, hornet3d , 'preciate it.
Yeah, last time I contacted them, the guy who answered my emails did not fully read my email and just sort of focused on only a small part of what I'd said.
If only software companies could be held responsible for poor customer support...
they promise much, but often barely deliver.
Anyway, I gotta get this fixed, I paid a pretty penny for this flippin' thing!
Have a good one...

Actually, re-reading your last post I now understand that you are trying to activate this from a computer not connected to the Internet, something I did not fully grasp the first time around. This was the setup that triggered the problem with Game Dev which, while it had issues with some connected computers, the main problem was with those not connected to the internet. One of the changes since then is that there is a procedure so get a permanent activation code to resolve this very issue. I am not sure the exact procedure but there is a answer to a thread here that outlined the procedure which is how I know about it. As it was not pertinent to my version of Poser I did not link the thread.
Might be worth having a look here, it was not that long ago as far as I remember, otherwise SM customer support should be able to advise or it may be covered in the documentation that you will have downloaded.

Your welcome, hope you get it sorted soon.

Thanks!
I finally "got" it that one could just find and hit the new Poser11 .exe file in the update, and install the program.
Then I did the manual activation routine. It seems to work.
I installed it as a 64 bit program. I kept my preferences. It seems to have automatically installed my previous libraries--only, some few things are missing (I've only checked my "new figures folder" from Poser09, many of my figures are not there). Not sure why. Maybe if I uninstall/reinstall as a 32 bit program, then I should get everything inside the libraries of my other two earlier Poser installations. (?)

Well i am glad to see you have had some success, I was going to say that I could not see why the library was different between the 32 bit and 64 bit and then remembered the way they are implemented is different between the two versions.
I have all my runtimes on a separate drive going all the way back to Poser 6. On any new install all I do is run it for the first time and it will find the default poser library. From within the library I then point it to each of the separate runtimes.
On a slightly different note I am keen to continue to help you where I can, however, due to certain other factors I may be deprived the opportunity to do so. If I suddenly appear to abandon you please realise it was due to circumstances I have little control over.

Got it. Understandable.
However, I had a "Scenes" directory/file for all scenes I created inside Poser9. It is now empty.
And when I checked scenes I had stored in a file in the main OS Documents folder, when each was opened, I got the dialog box--in Poser9--and it said the scene has a "new version number". And almost every scene was corrupted, messed up in some way. Why on earth would that happen? Have I lost years of work? Damn, and there were no backups.
I thought of maybe going back to the last system restore point...seems I keep opening a new can of worms, no matter what I do.
Anyway, I won't respond again this evening, have had enough "fun" for today.
And really, thanks again, hornet3D; M
I really do hope you have not lost any data. Having worked in a computer shop and seen the heartache caused by lost data I tend to be very organised with backups and have multiple levels. I store all my scenes on a separate drive to the one that stores my content to try and avoid anything being over written with a new install or update. They are backed up locally to NAS storage, then to the cloud and finally to M-drives that are archival grade. If you you have data missing you could try a recovery program but they tend to work best on image and music files, still worth a try but get one that you can do a trial run and see if it recovers anything before you pay any money buying one.
Sorry I had other things going on, I would normally advised you do a back up before any install, not just for Poser, but for any install in general.

Well, good advice, I've learned my lesson on this one.
But all is not bad. Somehow, the problem fixed itself for the most part.
In Poser 9, I had a directory/folder for scenes, among the other folders for the program. Those scenes are still accessible with Poser 9. (However, when I open that folder in Explorer, it shows the folder empty).
Poser 11 can't see them at all.
So they are not lost or corrupted, but I can't figure out why P11 can't see them, or neither can the OS. They open normally in Poser9.
Another thing is, when I open Poser 11, I get the Permissions box where I tell it I'm the admin and giving it permission to "modify this computer". I downloaded the updated program and installed it--so the disc version I had is gone off the PC. Not to mention all the confusion and hoops I had to jump thru to get the thing registered.
anyway, I've spent far too much time on this and bothered you folks with it, by straying off topic. I appreciate the help though! And thanks hornet3D!
I'm thinking it may be time to dump Poser entirely. I bought 11, because they sold me on the "Superfly" renderer. I wanted more realistic renders. I've tried Superfly with a couple of the wretched stock Poser figures. I'm not impressed, but maybe I just need to read my manual yet. I mean, at minimum, V4 was a big improvement over Poser figures. It's just that when DAZ came up with Genesis, getting it into Poser became, for me, rocket science.
I don't think one can get the Daz Genesis into Poser any more--I'm out of the loop on that one. And from what I've read and seen, their renderer is pretty impressive. I just wasn't into investing a ton more time in learning a new interface and buying a slew of new add ons, etc.. Anyway, Blender looks interesting as well...
All for now.

First question is where exactly is your Poser 9 file located? If they files are there, which you seem to confirm they are but the OS is not seeing them is could be a privileges issue. If the OS can't see them that could explain why Poser 11 is not seeing them, but it is strange that Poser can.
Don't give up on you Superfly if you want more realistic renders. SM have done a really good job of trying to get Superfly working with Firefly but there are a few nodes in Firefly materials that it does not handle well. This means some materials do not render well in Superfly without some tweaks. Skin is one area that needs working on but the best solution there is to fun any figure through Ezskin3 which makes the changes for Superfly in some easy steps. From the box Superfly works with well with metals so give those a try as you delve into working with Superfly.

Just got Poser 11, installing it now; however, am wondering if I install it as a 64 bit program, will my content be usable in my other older 32 bit installations of poser? (P6, & P9). That is, if I link up my previous two Runtimes/libraries inside P11.
