Subject: Using Daz3D figures as FBX inside Poser 12

infinity10 ( ) posted Sat, 16 January 2021 at 10:27 AM · edited Tue, 03 December 2024 at 5:20 PM

I started this thread to show how Daz3D figures may work inside Poser 12 via FBX route.

First, inside Daz Studio Pro 14.x, I set up my figure with hair and clothing and accesories, including character morphs and textures. I dopn't like using Filament rendering system compared to nVidia iRay rendering , so I am using the latter.

In my example, I am using the Genesis 8 Male, and the Hyun Ki morph of Yuzuru 8. I set the hair styling parameters to my preference. I posed and rendered the figure and this is what I got.

My camera focal settings are intentional, so please don't worry about your eyesight.

OK. So I export the figure and its accesories as FBX. Daz Studio allows me to choose what I export together with the figure. I get an FBX file.

Next, I import the file into Poser 12. It looks like a crumpled mess. No worries. Just Zero Figure. Poser 12 has default 30 frames, so check that your figure is zerod throughout. Or, just delete all the frames except frame 1 and then add back the frames to 30. Anyway.

You need to pose your imported FBX figure inside Poser 12. Sorry, the pose from Daz Studio does not carry over. Yup. Manual posing.

Next, check the settings inside Material Room. FBX will use only the good old Poser Root Surface and related nodes. Just make sure the transparencies for the eyelashes and the hair are set to 1. (FBX sets transparencies to zero upon import, so any item with transperencies need to be checked) I also added a bit of bump to the clothing and added SubSurface Scattering to the figure and acccessories.

Basically, that's all to it. Oh yes, I used Poser 12 morph brush to smoothen out his shirt - it had too much of his 6-pack muscles shape on it. So morph brush works on imported FBX file.

Here is my rendered result. HyunKi_20210116PSR.png

I baked down the textures when I exported the FBX file from Daz Studio, which may account for the original bump files not showing up in the Poser import. I suggest you play around with settings to find which works best for you.

Mainly, I show that you do not need DSON to use Daz3D figures inside Poser 12.

The hair style is static in the FBX. You must therefore adjust the hair to your desired shaped when inside Daz Studio, then export as FBX. As for styling the hair inside Poser, may I suggest using Morph brush or magnets to achieve some movement, depending on your scene.

Daz Studio has a decent, up to date ,FBX exporter.

I would imagine that people would be curious to see a G8 Female with her joints bending before commiting to performing all of that labor to get the figure into poser.

Also what are you options for changing clothes using this method??

You must complete the figure and accessories inside Daz Studio and then export. Poser does not understand how to conform imported FBX to another Imported FBX, so clothing must be adorned inside Daz Studio prior to export. It’s not too much work.

As for the female Daz3D figures, I will let others experiment, because I specialise in male anime-style figures. I may try Daz3D female FBX into Poser but I don’t know what specific bends to test for.

I tried this it did work, but no morphs were there. Still something to think about. Thanks for the post

Yes, there won't be morphs. Everything you need to set, has to be set inside Daz Studio, then export as FBX.

Dare I ask for the reasons/benefits to import genesis characters in Poser? I mean, from what i've seen, iRay seems to be rather good, too? I would just like to understand, not to cast shame or any other negative feelings to anyone, and specifically out of any inflamed threads, for my own culture :-)

I think there has been some concern among some Poser users that they cannot use DSON with Poser 12 and that Daz3D is no longer developing theDSON product.

I did try using the Genesis 8 Female in Daz Studio, then exported as FBX and imported that into Poser. I guess it is workable.

I changed some of the material settings and the hair prop. But basically, the morphed Genesis 8 Female figure is usable in Poser.

"You need to pose your imported FBX figure inside Poser 12."

It keeps its full rig ?? Wow !!

As yet, my PP_11 can only load old FBX files ~v6.1, or later if full IK rig working...

Um, any-one tried loading latest MakeHuman 1.2.0 (Dec_2020) FBX models to P_12 ??

Although this isn't part of the original purpose of this thread, I'll add some renders I made with that version of Make Human. I need to make some notes about using the MakeHuman assets: The FBX exported from MakeHuman must be processed inside Blender3D before you import the FBX into Poser 12. Simply import, then export, using Blender3D - this fixes the rotations of the Makehuman FBX rig. However, when the FBX from Blender3D is imported into Poser 12, you need to rotate the figure along the X-axis by -90 degrees. Moreover, the TOPMOST FBX item in the Hierarchy view is the rig that controls all the other rigs. I also needed to add back the trasnparency settings in Material Room to 1 (FBX sets them to zero), and I added subsurface scattering in Poser.

I don't particularly like the clavicle and upper shoulder rigging for MakeHuman figures. Anyway, I managed to pose the imported figure in Poser 12 and rendered with Superfly.

Please be aware that the figure will explode when you move the parameters to pose it. This is a quirk and will disappear when you move the dials again. It is irritating, but I take it to be a quirk of the MakeHuman figures.

MakeHuman clothing does not include ladies shoes. So this poor lady is barefooted.

Many thanks for fielding my tangential query.

Also, thank you for flagging those 'rotations & axes' issues. { Shudder } Still, such suggest possible options & features for future FBX I/O.

"Hey, look, Poser can now directly load FBX exports from xxxx & xxxxxx-- No need to detour via Blender etc !!"

;-)
