Subject: Looking for an older version of Blender

EClark1894 ( ) posted Thu, 12 January 2023 at 7:53 PM · edited Tue, 22 October 2024 at 1:11 AM

I' m trying to find an older version of Blender, probably something between 2.7 and 2.79. My current computer can run Blender, but not with out "artifacts". I can' figure out how to get rid of those artifacts, so I thought I'd stick with an older version, so I can get back in practice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to download it from here.

Thanks guys. That helps tons. Of course, I don't have any files anymore, so I'll be starting from scratch.

I'd like to make a suggestion Earl, whether you go with 2.7 or 2.79 (my recommendation), download a "zip" file version of  Blender.

Blender isn't really "installed".  You just set up a folder with everything that's contained in the "zip" file, and you're ready to go.

I don't know if this is true on a Linux or Mach computer.

Thanks, Miss B. I went with  2,79b to download.

Well, I finally got back into Blender today, version 2.79b, but then I discovered that I'd been out of practice for so long, I've forgotten how to do anything except manipulate a few vertices.

Well, I found out my mouse wheel is broken, so I'll have to get a new one to turn the Blender cameras.

Well, I got my mouse wheel back today, but now I have to re-learn Blender all over again.

Hey guys, I need some help. Some of it's coming back to me, but I've been away for so long, it's amazing how much I've forgotten in Blender. How do I select several vertices at once. I know I can select the one after another, but one at a time, but how do I select several at once.

There are several ways to do this. You can hold down the alt while selecting to select a loop. You can select 1 and then hold down the ctrl while selecting another to select all that's in between. You can hit the b for box select and then drag a box over those you want to select or you and hit c for circle select and then drag the circle to "paint" the over the vertices you want to be selected. and hitting A will toggle between selecting all or none.

Thanks, RP. The Box and circle select were the only ones I could get working, but they should be fine.

Crap! Now I can't remember how to import a reference photo into Blender 2.79b.

Thanks again, RP. I never really learned how to used Emptys. I always just added the reference image directly into Blender. But your posting a YouTbue vide made me realize that I had forgoteen how I learned much of Blender in the first place, so I went back to basics and found a video on posting a reference image directly into Blender.

While checking out that video Earl, I noticed a link on the right side at YouTube for a similar video for Blender 2.79 that you might find better, since Blender 2.79 is the version you're using.

Thanks, Miss B. I'll look it up. In the meantime. I have gotten at least a rough draft of the ski boot I wanted to make. I need to remember how I made squares into circles next.

Okay, I've been stopped cold because I can't seem to follow how to mirror an object. The main problem seems to be repositioning the origin point.

I can add a solidify modifier to thicken it up. Question I have to figure out is if the buckles are attached before or after I add the modifier. Also, I think my ankles need to be wider and the boot less tapered.

Yep.  As I  posted, they are clunky and not very flexible to wear.  You can Google for images just to get a general idea of what they look like.

Yeah, the overall shape is bit too "form-fitting" for ski boots, can certainly bulk up the ankle/foot for more of that ski-boot look.

So far as when to add the buckles, it shouldn't matter, treat them as their own object/part [just like the real thing] so they can have their own set of modifiers. I would probably add the solidify modifier to the boot, but not "apply" it until later, that way the base geometry [the fewer points there are to tweak at any point, the better] can be tweaked through-out the process of making the buckles and anything else. Save any "destructive" or "one-way" actions like applying modifiers for as late in the process as possible.

Okay, I'll take hints for what I'm doing wrong. Nothing is sticking out from the boot mesh, but I'm still getting these protrusions from the front  toe of the boot when I apply modifiers, especially, solidify and increase the thickness.
