I understand your fustration, do I ever. Maybe one day, after I've paid enough taxes, they'll let me put on the elbow-length rubber gloves so's I can wash dishes on the industrial machines in MacDonald's. Then I can say, 'Hey, I'm qualified to wear these. I have a degree.' Actually, I have three (one pending, no chance I'll fail, really). They're all in philosophy. I'm American-born, living in Scotland, and from what I hear about the climate in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave I don't ever want to go back. My problem with employment is not beaurocracy it's that fact that nobody wants a philosopher. If they do, to my advantage, they want a metaphysician. I am a metaphysician. Unfortuanately, I have a genetic physical condition that bars me from many faculties. I have two X-chromosomes. Well, we'll see. I've got teeth yet. So have you, you know! Keep trying!
you don't want to have one here. I got sick 2 times: both times flu. both times I went to Free health medical offices. both times I was told ( at the very beginning of my ilnesess) that i have to come when i am almost dead. they do not bother, you have to wait for 40-60 min for the doctor to come down from sky and to let you know that he is happy to receive f=tax payers money and you are the bastard who doesn't work yet and therefore do not support his family.:)
Well, I know you already made a statement about this but if you really hate it here so much, PLEASE go home. Hell, I'll even help you pack for your flight. You want to whine and complain about being an immigrant trying to make it in Canada? Fine, whine away. I couldn't care less. We have people who were born here struggling to make ends meet, so you'll get no sympathy from me. I'm no bigot, but you my friend strike me as just the type of whining complaining malcontent we don't need in our country. Why don't you go talk to a few of the caucasian folks who can't get work because so many companies have filed their staff with a mandated quota of minorities and genders? Maybe they will give you some sympathy. Go home. Have a nice flight and I hope you're prosperous where ever home is. Just remember, Canada DOES have an education system, medicare system, social security nets, a reasonably diplomatic government, and most of our population is housed and comfortable. There are alot of places in the world that don't have these luxeries, so go vent at someone elses expense. We sure don't need you. By the way I'm a NATIVE canadian, so save any remarks about me being a bigot, xenophobe etc, they don't apply. Bye now. Come back when you can't stay so long.
Having left the US only in uniform, I've not the full experience from which to lend advice. However, this one point is a valid one: "adapt or get out". If I were to move to another culture, then stand shocked that said culture rejected me, exactly who would be the fool here? The way I figure it, the US and perhaps a handful of other countries are actually somewhat friendly towards immigrants, and even then, only relatively so. Fact of life and all that. I guess I can sum it up this way: If there is an actual demand for folks of your profession overseas, then go to it. If you don't want to come back, then go where you're needed: If not Canada, then how about Mexico? Just a thought. /P
yup as a canadian born caucasion male,i gotta tell you things are tough all over bud, being in the so called majority sure doesn't afford me or anyone i know any special treatment,as voodoomesiah mentioned it's almost a hindrance to be a white male in this country today...you'll get no sympathy from me...i get no help from anywhere,i'm expected to earn my way and do what i can to help myself,i sure wish i could get access to some of the perks you seem to think i enjoy, they don't exist for anyone my friend.i understand your anger, but i think it's misplaced
guys, this is not an anger: this is a frustration!!! this is a fact of life, unfortunaely canadians like voodomessiah fail to UNDERSTAND since they are born here, their daddys and mommys struggled before them.all they do is just receive bounties gathered before them. and if you wanna helpme pack: how about buying back my computer, paying immigration fees? huh? i guess couple of years of working hard minus 37% taxes will cool you down, :) so, this is an overstatement, dude. I expected such replies, anyway. Yes , I am struggling, becase I don't want end up in the foster home for the old, and live on a welfare. Yes, I will go whenever time permits. It is just the case of Great White North finally understanding that there are other people living there as well.
Look, bud, as one who has lived for a long time on both sides of the border, I can assure you that you wont find it one whit easier in the US. Things are tough everywhere -- that should be no surprise to you or anyone else -- and in your field, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people who thought making the jump to IT was gonna be their goldmine train to happiness. Well, guess what: youre one of many in a really crowded field, and unless youre really good at what you do, youre not going to shine any brighter than anyone else. That sounds cold, but its also true. And yeah, its more expensive in Canada, thanks to politicians who think that Revenue Canada is some sort of bottomless pit of money. But is that attitude any different in the States? Not really. Who do you think Canada learned the art of economics from, Great Britian? Your assessment of the medical services available... well, I can only guess that you live in Toronto. But out in Alberta, where I lived, the wait might have been long but the service was unequalled. The quality of care was never an issue. So I suggest you take your lumps and accept that youre not the only person in the world struggling right now. Things are tough all over. Thats how it is. If you think its gonna be better back in the States, then go back. But I can guarantee that we will see a DAMN THE US post from you about six months from now.
Seems to be my day of stumbling across threads that annoy the hell out of me today. Small towns all over B.C, else where in Canada as well are suffering... dying. And you want us to bend over backwards because you left you're home (Where things are wonderful (thats the impression you give)) and come here expecting the red carpet. Personally with the time the way they are, I think the doors should be closed and locked until we can take care of ourselves... that does not mean white..born here Canadians. That means everyone who lives here. It is a wonderful country. We just have to take care of it. And give people like you an express route out.
Red carpet. You can have the red carpet. Now, I don't mean to be inflammatory, but the only place I can never get treated for illnesses that might actually befall me iiiiiissss... you guessed it! AMERICA!!! IIn fact I can never get treated for anything at all, since the mandatory bue cross/ blue shield on my father's employment account (which doesn't [didn't] cover me for asthma, pneumonia, or cancer, since I am asthmatic, am therefore at a higher risk for pneumonia, and all my female relatives older than me and one younger [my sister] had cancer) ran out. I'd be luckier to be hit by a bus: at least then there'd be someone to pay the funeral costs. No, I'm not bitter.
I like it!!!! This thread is good... I am not from the US! but it doesn't matter. I agree that many of us are facing difficulties. But can someone here agree with me that "shutting down the country will do no good"? Yes ! Canada is good for kids- 100% agree, I have seen it! Yes! Canada has good Internet /cheap enough Yes! Good transport system, good roads etc. But! Canada has bad HRs-- and here guys, you should trust me. can anyone agree, that once you change your education institution from "Belujistan- I am making the name up :), or Budapesht" to York university as well as changing your name from Shiva, Ahmad, to Robin, Dennis will benefit you at all? I say , yes! As an experiment, I have submitted two resumes from 3 imaginary people, to 10 different companies, previously not even bothered to reply. And guess what? "Dennis McDaniel" Got 3 interviews "Shiva Kannyranghan" got 0 interviews "Kim Ling Chan" got 0 interviews The only differences they had were the names of institutions they have completed and the names of companies previously worked. The Dennis charachter (not a poser guy yet :)) was obviously the one with canadian background. Just for info guys.

I can't say that I can relate to your frustrations. I'm one of the lucky ones that never been without a job for more than 2 months in 24 years except to go back to school to become a computer programmer. I 've been working as a programmer/analyst for aprox. 14 years. I know the division I work for now is always looking for good Powerhouse programmers. Check out CGI's website maybe you will find something there.Again I will be a voice of reason, dunga, you say that you are being discriminated against, and maybe in a way you are. But you really must understand that it is basic human nature, people naturally are drawn to the familar. I myself have been guilty of this when I was handed my insurance booklet and told to pick a doctor. I live in a fairly large city and the booklet listed approxamately 300 names, no info on the doctor, just a name and address of the office. How does one pick a complete stranger to share your intimate and embarassing medical problems with? I picked a name I could pronouce and remember. Now imagine those 300 names as 300 resumes, and as you say the only difference are the names.... pick one.
I am a native born Canadian, very proud to be a Canadian, I live in the US, to put this simply, it is hard everywhere. Discrimination - will always be here, there and everywhere you must deal with it. You Say Damn Canada, you could say Damn everywhere.....not easy for ANYONE, has been hard since the beginning of time. I know many who's biggest challenge is to eat, who battle cancer, who have Aids. Please take a moment and reflect how fortunate we really are. Sharen

maybe these people can help you,i thought Canada was the best country in the world, kromekat said its better than the us........Well Dunga, got a ideal. No doubt you wont like it but probly you'll be working in no time. The only issue is will it be in the feild of your interest. HEHE you may laugh after i say this but try the ummm Canadian Military. Sure its far from the happiest place on the block but ive had a steady pay check for 13 years, in 7 more its a instant 40% pension. Hell if you dont like it, you can get out after 3 years. Figure ive got 7 more years to get some real graphics skill, then i move on. As is, if you get in the right areas, you can get tens of thousands in training. Ie Cisco, IP, Microsoft etc Virtually every trade is hurting for people, just avoid the combat arms type and look for the technical ones.
I haven't been to Canada in over twenty years...so I can't say what the situation is like there now...but I can say what the situation is like here in Dallas, Texas. I've been a computer repair technician for over 15 years. I worked at a major computer retail outlet for seven. Because sales dropped so much, I was given a two hour notice of being laid off. No severance, nadda. Took me two and a half months to find a job and making 125 dollars a week less than what I was making. Didn't have a choice, I had to take the job or lose the meager unemployment benefits entirely for "denying work opportunity". The IT industry is overstocked with the latest onslaught of technical training school graduates hitting the pavement and passing out resumes. What used to be a lucrative field of expertise has turned into a rediculous tirade of despair where big companies can get highly skilled employees for pennies on the dollar instead of paying what they're worth. At the place I got laid off from, I made the company enough money in billable labor to not only pay MY salary but the salary of two others, yet, they chose to keep the salespeople who weren't doing THEIR job properly and throw the ppl who WERE being profitable out in the street.
Dunga you are so full of crap it is painful. There are entire communities of "minorities" in canada. In the lowermainland of BC you can't walk into a store without meeting an east indian / middle eastern employee. Have you ever been to Richmond? Mostly Asian population. and they are doing well thank you very much. so your resume story is bullcrap. Take your self pity, your immigration fees, and your computer payments and get the hell out. Free up the resources for someone who appreciates this country for what it is, a great nation, with freedom and justice for everyone. You don't agree? fine with me. See ya, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
soooo, our so called "native canadian" (voodoo) strikes back? are you the "native" native(the iroqua or the member of the 7 tribes?), or are you a visual minority facing a barrier to employment? OOOh, no? Or, yes, we rule this country, everything here is for us,we usually win court cases etc.etc.? Remember the "mandated quota for minorities"?That's why you got the job.sorry. then i understand the ass kicking statement.Troubled childhood, I suppose?) if you are so unhappy about my post --- you can practice your door-in-the ass-voodoo somewhere else. and if canada has these little messiahs like you then everything above proves right. by the way "voodoo"? how old are you? 18-20, still in college, receiving EI,sitting on a welfare, receiving weekly cash from daddy-because if not-thenyou can sue him for not providing necesseties of life, huh? to other guys/girls around.(i am just upset with this previous post) I have 2 iroqua friends here , and they do not think that what i have written is crap. enjoy... till you stumble upon such people. anyway if you would like to continue to blast you maygo ahead. I'll reserve the right to observe or to ignore whateverwill be posted. see yah,and by the way-- you cannot afford what I possess, intelectually or otherwise.
Dunga, You have really proven you're a small minded weasel with your last post. Intellectually you're nothing but a self centered juvenile, you're right, I can't afford that. If you really must know I am 32, have a family and have supported myself in the work place for over 16 years, so take your generalizations and shove them. Your comments about natives proves you're the bigot in this debate, and as for your 2 "iroqua" friends...tonto and chakotay don't count. You have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that our immigration policies need revamping, as to not allow anyone access unless they can prove they have the will to support themselves. You obviously don't have what it takes to make it in life. People come here by the thousands every year and make good livings for themselves, but occasionally we get a low life like you who expects everything to be handed to them. Narrow minded, self centered bigots like you should never be let across the border.
somemone learned how to speak English ,huh? "thousands of new comers...huh?READ this!Bigot! "240 thousands each yaer arrive to Canada, and guess what? 270 + are leaving for the US and other countries as soona s they are gettingCanadian passport" READ HRDC!!!! after June 28 , when the new immigration law will take place CANADIAN government will be an official thief of 65% of the monies sent for the processing fees. So be proud of it! Luckily, in canada we have MPs who are smarter than you, to combat those government idiots who proposed and passed that law (they have same ideas about foreigners like you do). Otherwise, in 10 years to come, Canada will be begging for people to come over. SO you don't believe me? READ HRDC. juvenality is your problem. you are 32? and how did you get your first job? told them you are a visible minority, so they could fill up a mandated quota? Or your papa made a call? what about second job? you found someone in the bar and they reccomended you for being a "beer buyer" for them? what about your third job? speechless , aren't you? You FORGET that you are born in this country. Others who were born in THEIR countries ALSO supported their own families for ages(before you were even borned/unplanned?) so, call me names, you learned english/whatever...it is up to you, and live on EI, and finally after a while end your days in the old folks home. because tonto and chakotay will not support you :) try another post... i'll see your reply...other are watching as well :))))

God only knows , but I guess I started loosing it. This is one of the few boards I have been participant of. And the past people here were quite helpfull(as I was to others) in resolving several issues. So, I thought of sharing some deep feelings I had for the past several months. For the past 6 months plus I have been trying and trying to get the job here in Canada, but to no avail. It seems as if the whole Universe, Fate and Destiny decided to get even with me only. I have been trying all different kinds of approaches to get an interview. So far the only success stories I can narrate are the ones where I have offered my services for free -- a common robbery trend here in Canada whereas the new comers are not given a fair chance of getting the job right away. So the enslaving them by offering a Co-op or even no Co-op just for the purpose of just using their skills is going on here at an ever increasing pace. Damn, the frustration grows especialy after filling a lengthy application forms, and then only realizing that the company decided not to hire IT people anymore, just because as they claim the market is overflooded with us , IT guys/gals. I have started to realize that this country turned to be not as lucrative as it is publicised by its lying government( especially after the canadian government decided to deny visas to more that 65% of applicants and therefore virtually "stealing" their money) "Lucky" me , I have passed all that pre-requisites long ago. It is amazing how Canadian employers see the situation: It doesn't matter how high you went back where you came from, you must start right from the bottom of the "food chain". And that is so embarasing. an MBA in Finance or Professor of Medicine should get a so-called survival job at a UPS, carrying boxes not less than 50 lbs whole night to earn a "f***ing" canadian experience. Or working long shifts for just 7 Canadian dollars an hours at Mall/Shoppers Drug Mart/Basic food under close supervision of his manager - a 18-20 years girl/boy who happen to be born Canadian and therefore can humiliate you. Otherwise no one is going to even read his resume. Afterwards, 4-5 months later, when he applies for a position, where a HR manager decided to look down upon him, it turns to be even more severe: "no one believes his credentials simply because: "Wha kind of MBA are you if you only got the job as box carrier?" Another fantastic issue I would like to stress here is a STUPIDITY and a NARROWMINDEDNESS of people with whom it is necessary to deal with. Damn, Canadians, were you not taught at schools? Or is it the truth that the public education in the North America is just NOTHING? Of course, we are proud to be Canadians. Proud of what? the whole country was built on the immigrants blood, and after a while they are just not needed. I have overheard severalconversations in the TTC, buses, trains, plaines and also read some statements from some "naturalised" canadians, like "if you/they did not like Canada, why they came here in the first place?"Or "Go home!!!" Trust me, there is no place betrer than home!!! I would go home as soon as I can have a chance. I am not a refugee and I came to Canada since I believed in what it was said "Land of opportunity". Yes! but only for those who were born here. The rest of us are just the raw material. I am not giving up! it is just a wish for 100000 Steven Seaguls equipped with machine guns to destroy this situation :)
