I know they already know about it, but maybe if we complain enough they will fix it.

Marque ( ) posted Thu, 16 May 2002 at 8:45 PM

No, they will probably tell us to wait until version 5.0 which will come out...hummmm...wonder when? Marque

ColdWarTendencies ( ) posted Thu, 16 May 2002 at 9:42 PM

& tell them to make Poser 5 gui less memory intensive also :/ anybody agree ? Jeez by the time its opened half your rams already flooded,Don't get me wrong they did a nice job but I don't like the 2 loading screens (credits n such) @ startup, but For some reason I love the feature of being able to change the colour of the background :) Also a little tip for those wit slower coms (I'm stuck on 32mb ram , 200mmx processor) use a process manager that allows you to edit the priority & turn poser up to higher (realtimes not good on 32mb,Unless you like your taskbar taking 5 mins to show :/) Apologies for my rantings but just thought I'd bring this little note up since its 3:45 a.m here n as usual Insomnias holding me back from my beauty sleep heh Anyways take care all , Peace!

lol marque.. mark - im sure they know all of this... but: someone who is more interested in this than i should talk to both the rosity admins and steve cooper of curious labs and ask for a sticky 'poser 5 suggestions' list to be formed in one of the forums. people could add their own ideas, and i am POSITIVE that it would be of a great benefit to both renderosity AND curious labs. cheers, -gabriel

jimjur ( ) posted Thu, 16 May 2002 at 11:04 PM

Could we expect anything better from greedy US IT companies.

Blackhearted ( ) posted Thu, 16 May 2002 at 11:15 PM

wtf? how could you possibly think of curious labs as a 'greedy it company'? theyre just a small group of folks, making a living like you or i. id be interested to see sales figures for poser4 and propack - with the rampant spread of warez i seriously doubt that theyre as great as many people think. im willing to bet that over half the people here at renderosity right now are using a warez version of at least one of their primary graphics programs. i dont consider curious labs 'greedy' at all. their pricing has always been very competitive, and they have had several awesome discounts and promotions. steve cooper and other members of the staff are constantly in here in the forums answering people's questions and leaving poser tips. i wish i could say the same for other companies. you want a 'greedy it company'? look at corel. have you ever seen one of their representatives at rosity? no, were 'beneath' them. theyre also the reason for the lack of direct poser import support in the previous two versions of bryce.

Marque ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 1:53 AM

I don't think they are greedy at all, just trying to make a living. And why do you say US greedy companies? Get a clue, look around you and you will see that greed knows no country. Marque

hauksdottir ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 2:02 AM

Greedy???!!??? ::whoop with laughter:: I've had the pleasure of a visit to their Intergalactic Headquarters. Admittedly, the etched mithrillium doors guarding the vault where the programmers are chained to their computers are impressive, as was the size of the parking lot (being repaved to cover the latest crop of bodies... I couldn't believe that so many warez pirates fail to buy asphalt insurance). However, the actual office space is unassuming. The hall is lined not with Miro's or Hockney's, but with Poser art done by members of this community. They are proud of what we do with the tools they make. US products do cost more overseas, but that is due to exchange rates and customs duties, not to the base price of the software. For examples of greed you will have to go to Maya, Max, and other overpriced products. Carolly

Blackhearted ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 2:48 AM

hey! maya just cut their prices to like 1/10th, lol maya unlimited is cheaper than max now

hauksdottir ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 4:57 AM

Was it just last year that a Maya seat cost $12,000? And the 2 most needed plug-ins (cloth and particles) were another $5,000 EACH? This is besides the hardware with required multi-processors. A couple of years back I was looking at between $30-40,000 to set up a functional Maya workstation, and simply couldn't justify the rip-off. A colleague had a belly-up computer which had to be replaced. A/W charged her $1,000 for the "privilege" of transferring the Maya license from the dead beast to her new one. The base price is just the start. And you thought bleeding the victim went out in the Middle Ages? Carolly

FishNose ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 6:34 AM

Yeah, the high end companies are being forced to bite the bullet now and realise that future, sustainable revenues will come from a large customer base at a decent price, NOT a small base at a high price. For people with patience: just stand back and watch as Maya, Max, Cinema and the rest plummet in price over the next year - this is only the beginning. It's the beginnings of a price war. Because once the step has been taken off the price pedestal, the companies in question HAVE TO compete with pricing, not only functionality and reputation. And that means the prices will drop, drop, drop. Suddenly it's a hard market. Also, the costs of development have now been covered by the ridiculous pricing thus far, so they need to think in terms of long term survival, not only covering old costs. And I'm sure there are other new and exciting competitors (as yet unknown to us) all over the place waiting for a chance at a market share. I'm guessing that all these packages, full version, will cost about as much as Photoshop in a year or two. Harks back to the stone ages........ Hey, I remember my first cd-rom burner, bought in early '95. For PC. It cost the equivalent of $4500 and the software cost over $3000. (!) I kid you not. Single speed. Now you get both for about $100. Talk about broader customer base, competition and decent pricing!

gryffnn ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 6:34 AM

For new folks: Larry created Poser and Steve et al developed previous versions. They saved it when MetaCreations decided to dump all their graphics applications. Curious Labs is a small company, currently focused on giving us a ground-breaking Poser 5. As others have mentioned, working on a P4 patch would take scarce resources from that. They're had a wishlist available for P5 input for a long while, and we know they pay very close attention to what we're doing/suggesting/complaining about here. As for crosstalk: it's a bit of a bother to set up a group of figures with corresponding nulls, but goes fast with experience - and you can save and reuse your scene with no crosstalk problems. (The user guide with my P4FemMagic figures has a detailed illustrated guide and an included null that folks seem to find helpful.)

FishNose ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 6:41 AM

CWT, running Poser on 32MB RAM? Are you serious? Geez, what version of Windows is that? My basic Windows load (empty desktop, just drivers and stuff loaded, no Virus SW) is 210MB. And when Poser is rendering it pushes past the 500MB mark, no other apps running. :] FishNose

Jim Burton ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 9:15 AM

If CL is having problems getting everything to work as promised in Poser 5, I, myself would be quite happy to buy a Poser 4.5 upgrade with this fixed, plus whatever else they have finished (hopefully raytracing), for say $100. Then they would also have the time (and maybe money) to get Poser 5 perfect.

markdc ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 10:13 AM

BTW, their (CL's) response was that it is a known bug (I knew that) and they couldn't comment on future releases. So, it was probably a waste of time to write them. At least they responded...

ColdWarTendencies ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 12:11 PM

FishNose , I'm running 98Se & of course have to stick with the P4 figures included with package :/ also reason I never get a pic finished heh by the time I've added clothes my coms screaming & Kozaburos wonderfull hair totally kills it :/ (transparency?) I'll stick to 2d!

Blackhearted ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 12:14 PM

well, heres the solution i use for crosstalk: if i want more female figures in a scene, instead of loading 3 vickys, ill load a vicky, a stephanie, a supermodel vicky, or any other character (handspan studios brigit, etc). same for mike. the first mike will be mike2, the second boris, etc. this not only ensures theres no crosstalk, but that my characters remain unique :) cheers, -gabriel

gryffnn ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 12:21 PM

LOL Jim, they'd have my $100, too. Of course, just imagine the complaints if Poser 5 came out six months later! A .5 upgrade would mean they wouldn't have to work on the whole package, included figures, libraries, etc. But if they're rewriting any amount of the basic code, they wouldn't benefit from working on parts that aren't going to be around. That call has to come from inside. We can just hope that their choices are going to result in the best for Poser.

Blackhearted ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 12:31 PM

as for running poser on a 200mmx with 32 mb of ram and saying that CL needs to optimize memory usage for p5? umm.. poser runs great for me. i wouldnt even try to run it on a p1 200 with 32 megs of ram - thats below the minimum requirements for most operating systems. win98 SE will use almost all of that 32 mb of ram, and leave you with little else left. you have to realise that 3D applications and games are processor intensive, so if you want to continue the hobby you should look into upgrading your comp first, then think about poser 5. my main workstation is an athlon t-bird 1.1ghz with 1.5gb of ram and a 64mb geforce2 ultra, and im considering upgrading my processor for larger scenes, and perhaps my video card as well. my server is running on an AMD k6/2-500 with 384 mb of ram and an overclocked 32mb TNT 2 ultra and it doesnt run poser fast enough for me to bother using it for anything other than testing products (i have poser pro installed on my main and poser4 standard on my server, just to make sure my store items work on both platforms). right now, computers are insanely cheap. i suggest you check out Pricewatch.com for the most current prices. you could probably put together an entire new rig for yourself for a lot less than you think. they have some very nice motherboard/cpu/heatsink/fan combos, and you could probably make do for now with a case/power supply (buy this locally because its the heaviest part of the computer and shipping costs more than the case itself), mb/cpu, and 256mb sdram. dump your old hdd, video card, sound card, etc in there and you have time to upgrade those as you go along. youre looking at between $20-25 for 256mb of pc 133 sdram, and $140 for an athlon XP 1800 with motherboard/cpu/fan - and you can pick out something that has onboard sound/video that you can use until you get a better video card/sound card. a case you can get locally, with a 300 watt power supply, for around $30-35. so if you shop around carefully, you can build a computer thats 20x as fast as the one you have now for around $200. i suggest that be your first step, before you start thinking about poser 5 ;) cheers, -gabriel

The more I think about it, the more I'd love to see a 4.5 upgrade for a reasonable price. They have promised so much, and we are all expecting it, and not only that, we expect 0 bugs, this would be an easy way to split out what is easy and what takes a little longer. As long as they give the 4.5 upgrade guys a slightly better deal on 5.0 it should be no major complaints. I did the same thing on SMV Essentials, the package was just getting so big and hard to finish I broke it uo in two, when the first came out it was already called SMV Essentials I, as I knew there would be a II! I haven't done any programing in a long time, but all proper modern programing is done in modules, assuming they are using the same language (I'd guess C++) it isn't that hard to move a working module to another program, especially if they were done by the same guys in the same style. However, if they are changing languages too all bets are off!

ColdWarTendencies ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 2:22 PM

Well its kinda hard to upgrade anything when you just lost your job & paying your father to stay under his roof,Apologies for anybody offended by my system specs or me,Art is an escape from real life to me,I can express whatever I'm feeling witout flying in a rage at those around me! "you have to realise that 3D applications and games are processor intensive, so if you want to continue the hobby you should look into upgrading your comp first, then think about poser 5." F*ck it I'm not gonna get into an argument with anybody here since I've watched over Renderosity for a while & the community shoudlnt be stained with crap like this,if you'd like to send further mocks then please feel free you'll find my mail adress in my details here

bloodsong ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 4:17 PM

there, ya happy? putting a mike1, mike2, and boris figure in a scene won't stop cross talk, where the figures use the same-named fbms. same with a victoria and stephanie. it doesn't matter if the FIGURE is the same, it just matters what the names of the fbm's are. if you have a frog with a 'super hero' fbm, you can get it to cross talk with your p4 figures just as easily.

Blackhearted ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 5:17 PM

jesus you see that as mocking? im trying to help you, man. i think you need to get off your high horse and recognise help when its offered. if i didnt give a shit about you i wouldnt have taken 20 minutes of my fucking time to research prices on pricewatch and type that long thread. noone is 'insulting' your system specs. my entire life ive helped people with upgrading their computers - ive given away more complete systems and upgrade parts, as well as countless hours, days of my time to many people, sometimes complete strangers or casual aquaintances. to insinuate that im making fun of your system or saying that you have no right to create 3d art is so far wrong. like i said if i didnt give a shit about you, i wouldnt have bothered to spend the time replying - ESPECIALLY not when i have a lot of RL problems to take care of right now and dont have a lot of time to spare.

gryffnn ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 5:18 PM

CWTendencies, you'll find you've got company around here - lots of folks who have to make do with an old system and the free copy of Poser 3. And lots more who depend on having a creative outlet when things get tough. I expect most of us admire that you can run Poser on 32MB of RAM. BTW, have you seen the free low-resolution Victoria 1 (low-res V2 is for sale) over at DAZ? The zip is 1.8MB, so the figure might still be too big for your system, but worth keeping.

FishNose ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 5:42 PM

Blackhearted, you need to go take a beer. Cheers! And CWT, my apologies if I started something here. I didn't mean to, I assure you. Hey, I lost my job 3 years ago, for the fourth time..... it sucks, every time. By the way, I'm also running Win 98SE. And I remember my first PC, back in '85 (before Win existed) - it had all of 64kB! Wow! And when I soldered together an extension memory board with another 64kB on it, I was in heaven... Yeah, definitely pick up that LoRes Vicki 1 for free if you haven't already - you never saw me grab a freebie so fast. :o] :] FishNose

ColdWarTendencies ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 6:48 PM

BlackHearted & anybody else who replied to my message you have my full apologies for the reply :/ I have just read the message again & I don't know what triggered my response,I'd buy you that beer if I was near (I suspect your in america , Beats me) & FishNose no you havent instigated anything (Jeez no wonder I got no money for upgrades wit all the people I gotta make up to) :) yes I'm easyly provoked,Once again I don't know how to sum up Offer my apologies but thank you all for putting me right & hope you have a good future & never have to encounter somebody like me again heh heh take care all , Peace! Yeah I just grabbed Vic 1 & Daz has my eternal blessings & I wish him & his company also a great & prosperous future the model has great potential & as soon as I'm back in employment (& finished paying for all your rounds of beer) I would certainly consider buying the full package as my Vicki is a little um exposed at the moment , I just grabbed a couple of Phil C's clothing items from free stuff to play wit for the time being (Another person I'd like to thank) Ok there are many I'd like to thank but the list would never end so for the last time , To all Renderers & members staff involved anyway in the running of Renderosity I'll raise a pint in your direction & can only hope you'll be around for a while to come

Blackhearted ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2002 at 6:55 PM

well, ill be moving in two weeks or so - IM me, ill most likely have some comp components i wont be using since because of space and power consumption considerations i will be retiring my server and one of my workstations :( i should have some hdds and maybe a m/b and cpu i wont be using. cheers, -gabriel
