Fantastic! I can't wait to see the details!

WyldeSnake ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 2:26 AM

Exactly how does the Digital Art Prints section work? Will it be just like the current marketplace, where people upload specific images made for print sizing, or can you take gallery images and request prints? This sounds very interesting...I just might find some posters for my walls anyways.

ClintH ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:27 AM

Just like the MarketPlace. You cant take gallery images. Clint

Will you print ANY image? I mean, will the image have to be withing the TOS, even though the only people seeing it will be the printer and the purchaser?

tammymc ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 9:11 AM

A section within the marketplace will be created and all images will have to be within the TOS. thanks tammy

dreamsosweet ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 12:15 PM

How/when/where do we submit our stuff for print? This is marvelous, thanks so much!

ClintH ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 12:20 PM

We will open it up on July 1st. There will be a new option in the MarketPlace upload area for Digital Art Prints. Clint

Thanks, Clint - been thinking about getting into some printwork for a while, this looks like a good way to start!

Helen ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 4:46 PM

I presume you will only print as an image is purchased?? Example I submit an image.. Fanny Brice decides to purchase it. Then you print etc Am I correct thinking this?? Ok what happens if the customer decides they don't like the print once purchased? Who bears the costs of any refund? Helen

Hi Helen, You are 100% correct. Prints are printed and shipped when ordered. Refunds will be handled as they currently are in the MP. Renderosity and the Artist share the refund costs. We dont anticipate any problems with the prints. I've seen the samples and they are very high quality. Clint

voodoo ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:24 PM

Clint, almost all of the stuff sold in the marketplace is software related, and refunds are easy to handle. What happens if someone returns a print? If both Renderosity and the artist are responsible for the refund, how is the refund split between the artist and Renderosity? As there is a real product (a print) someone will have to cover the cost of printing a product that was returned. Or will you just hold the print until someone wants to buy it again?

Micheleh ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:29 PM

That's quite a good idea, Voodoo- holding the few refunded prints in reserve against future sale, or to sell at conventions or trade shows.

ClintH ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:37 PM

voodoo, To be 100% honest with you I dont have those answers today. I will have them before we launch on July 1st. I will communicate that information to all participating merchants. Clint

picky ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:42 PM

Hey you guys! That's a very serious issue that should be resolved in a proper and professional manner. You should put NO REFUND for the prints. This is a real product and only if there is something seriously wrong with it or where demage has occured, the print will be replaced with the new one of the same kind. You already know what you are buying and by allowing a refund, people will take advantage of it and it will end up costing you and the artist lot's of money!

Micheleh ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:48 PM

Another good point, especially with creation on demand products. I am sure Clint will let it be known as soon as it's decided. Good advice, though. We have some seriously savvy people here!

Axe555 ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:52 PM

Ok, possibly some dumb questions, but I know next to nothing about how the Marketplace works. Are there any plans to advertise the sale of art prints outside the renderosity membership, or would members have to drive traffic to their little corner of the marketplace? Can someone who isn't a member buy prints, or would they have to sign up? Rich

Micheleh ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 9:01 PM

Tee hee hee!!! Clint and I are working on that right now! Message671426.jpg

Axe555 ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 9:07 PM

Cool! I should have known you would be on top of the situation, Micheleh. (no offense Clint. ;))

Micheleh ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 9:25 PM

Awwww!! warm fuzzies Really, all the staff here have one goal- make the members successful, whether that is through learning, marketing, or whatever. I get totally hyped when I think we can get more exposure for all the fantastic talents here who really deserve it.

Legume ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 10:42 PM

Ah, I understand the reason for the images being within the TOS now. I didn't understand that people will be selling prints of their work here, I thought you were merely selling the PRINTING SERVICE, like if I wanted a print of my own work, I could order it.. I don't understand, however, why the image would have to be within the TOS if the artist ISN'T selling it. If I wanted something for my personal use, and nobody else would ever see it unless they were using my bathroom, I don't see what harm could come of printing one for me. Cafe Press is doing something similar with posters and stickers (soon), but their TOS is REALLY stringent. You can't get an image printed there at all if it contains nudity.

firefly ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 10:59 PM

This is such a cool idea and wonderful opportunity. I too feel there should be a "no refund" policy on this item. It is all too easy to take a print and get it duplicated nicely from colour photocopy type equipment. I know the quality will not be the same but it might just be good enough given it's almost free to the unscrupolous :)

Micheleh ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 11:29 PM

Legume- I don't know. I will ask about the possibility of artist-eyes-only, single prints.

Kiera ( ) posted Tue, 25 June 2002 at 3:22 AM

I would also be interested in artist-eyes-only single prints. I don't think my work is good enough to sell, but I would like some nice prints of my own pieces. Sounds weird.. but true. =)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Tue, 25 June 2002 at 6:30 AM

I will have to step in here. For more than 16 years, I sold prints of my own work at Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions all over North America. (Don't get me started on customs... and Canada is supposed to be a friendly neighbor.) My price range on prints was $3 to $50, more for hand-colored, well within the fannish budget. I know something about inventory and record-keeping... useful when being audited. I also sold the originals at Art Shows. Patricia Davis is a member here, and she can certainly confirm what I say about this enterprise, because she was also selling prints from her dealer's table and originals in the art shows... and for probably as long a period of time. We know what it is like to be burned, and to burn out as both producer and proprietor of our own businesses. If you allow returns on prints, I'll buy stock in Kinko's and KwiK Copy Center. With the enhanced state of color photocopying, people will not only xox the print, they'll probably make copies for all their buddies, too. Even the cheap places can do a good enough job. If you hold returned prints in the hopes of selling them at a later convention, you will have to deal with inventory at the end of your fiscal year, as well as the hassle of shipping and displaying them properly. You are already dealing with some inventory in the form of hats and t-shirts, but that is your own merchandise... you don't have obligations to other people for its display and sale. You are probably going to subtract production costs before sharing any proceeds with the artist. You should specify up front what all those costs are going to include, and a likely amount. Are the sales going to be handled as royalties? Or what? There are slightly different tax treatments (the numbers go on different forms at tax-time). Are you going to provide statements/checks on a monthly or quarterly basis? This isn't meant to discourage you, but to let you know that there are issues which ought to be recognized and addressed before you throw the doors open. Carolly

Ok - To followup on a few of the outstanding questions. Eyes only or one off prints might be an option that we exlore once we have launched the Digital Art Prints (DAP). Its not currently an option but we will consider adding it as an enhancement down the road. Refunds : There will be no refunds on DAPs. All sales are final. In the event that goods are damaged in shippment a replacement product will be supplied. Clint

Cool, now we just need Size, PPI, color separation, etc. info so we know we are going to get a good file up to the printer. Also, Is this actually going to be linked to the gallery? Like if I have the image there would there be a "Buy this print" button right in the gallery or not?

ClintH ( ) posted Tue, 25 June 2002 at 11:18 AM

Kattman - No its not linked to the gallery at this time. Might be something we dig into down the road. When we launch on July 1st you will have access to all the Submission Guidelines for DAPs. Clint

Sounds good! Now to get to work again, but damnit, I almost don't have time to create art anymore. I got a program I have to keep supporting and another product package on the drawing table. I'll get those things worked out I guess and just sit on the sidelines for a while to see how things go. Then I will get to work on some more finished pieces!

Kendra ( ) posted Tue, 25 June 2002 at 2:25 PM

'Nother question. Until you have the 'eyes only' option will members get a price break on their own images? And is this open to anyone who would like to try selling an image?

...... Kendra

ClintH ( ) posted Tue, 25 June 2002 at 3:51 PM

Hi Kendra, Yes, once we launch on July 1st it will be open to all artists. There are minimum price restrictions for each size print. So you can purchase at the min price. Clint

This is SO sweet. I'm gonna offer prints of the Magic Pink Pony in the marketplace for TEN MILLION DOLLARS EACH.

Sorry, you can only get away with that in New York, if you pass around champagne and use $50 words. ;]

"You cannot believe how very intrigued I am with this entire thread. I'm completely amazed at what a good idea it is... In fact, I'm ashamed it wasn't my idea first... Hrm..." LOL! I had that idea, too, and probably a lot of others. However, I don't think suing for intellectual property would work. ;]

PabloS ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 3:08 PM

So I'm not the one that had the idea first?!? Until there's a function in the galleries, I suppose the artist could provide a link in the comments section to the MP item.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 3:55 PM

Hmmm, funny Legume and I were the only ones who misunderstood the original idea. Now I just gotta figure out if Legume's gonna beat the crap out of me (digitally, of course) for insulting him by lumping him in with the likes of me...grin. Seriously, though, when I read it, I thought R'City had made arrangements with a quality printer to provide printing services for artists wanting to have runs of 500 or a thousand of their prints (for later sale). Numbered, etc.

wdupre ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 7:15 PM

I hate to open this kettle of fish but, this does bring up in a real way the whole bruhaha about free stuff not for commercial use. Don't get me wrong I think it's a great idea, but I do wonder how many pieces will get pulled because of textures or props not getting proper permission for their use. This even more clarifies the need to have some way of easily Identifying non comercial use downloads after the fact.

Micheleh ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 8:25 PM

I think it would help to further define commercial use, as well. For instance, IMHO using it for an image which is subsequently sold should be ok, reselling the item should not.

Cris_Palomino ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 9:06 PM

Are you only doing glossy? I prefer matte because glossy looks, to me, like photos taken of an art piece. Matte has the appearance of a fine art print. Also, I'd like to know the brand of paper as well as the weight. Are the sizes given the actual print area or the paper size? Most printers have to have a margin so the print size will be smaller. Are all materials being used of archival quality? What printer is being used? Thanks, Cris

Aureeanna ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 11:12 PM

I'd like to know what the pricing is and is the split the same...50/50...can I purchase my own and just pay 50 and not have to pay myself the other 50?

TMGraphics ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 11:26 PM

I think this is a splendid idea and venture! I would liketo know the printer/paper/ink specs as well!
