Subject: Nasty Poser Pro Bug??!!

file_18519.jpg

I selected the beard full morph from Michael and made a new group for Texturing in Poser 4.03, then backed up the file to a CD. I opened the file from the CD a couple of times in Poser 4.03 and it worked fine. Now When opening the file in Poser Pro (Poser 4 with Pro Pak) my model has holes in the head (look at the picture). Is this a bug in Poser Pro when dealing with the grouping tool, can it be fixed? Come to think of it where is the grouping tool in Poser Pro?

Mitch1 ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 11:56 AM

Oh, yes I found the grouping tool activates the Edit Group tool DOH! I must besuffereing from Altzheimer. Now I could try to invert those faces but is there a faster way?

Mitch, this is a good question.

I made a beardedCr2 for Mike 1 and put it up for download on my site. I made the figure in Pro Pak using the grouping tool. I have never had any problems. I have heard from lots of folks who have downloaded and used the file, and they have not had any problems.

Then, just a couple of weeks ago, I get an email from Rawnrr and he is having this exact same problem in Pro Pack with the figure he d/l from my site. I download the figure and try it in ProPak it is okay. I have a friend try it, same thing, all is okay. I get back to Rawnrr and we try everything we can think of to figure this out. Made sure the current service pak was installed. Clean install of ProPak and test the file there. Same prob. Finally, he uses the grouping tool and makes his own bearded Mike, much like you did. It works. Last I heard, it still works.
Really, really strange. Still have no explanation as to why this happens.

Link his his thread asking about it.

Is your copy of Poser Pro patched to the current version?

I came, I rendered, I'm still broke.

TigerD ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 1:44 PM

Hey! I had the same problem with Shadownet's bearded Mike figure. Worked just fine in Poser4.03. Upgraded to the Pro Pack and got the holes. Installed latest service pack (3) and Voila!! Sorry, not Voila!!, still getting holes. I get holes in any figures with groups added. What the $%&* is going on?

RawArt ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 1:46 PM

Aye...I had exactly the same problem. This figure worked fine and clean on poser 4....but as soon as propack was installed, then these holes appeared. Shadownet and I wrestled with this problem for about a week until he sent me a quick tutorial as to how to do the grouping of the beard myself. Thus far it worked fine. It does seem to be a weird bug in pro-pack. Rawn

shadownet ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 2:06 PM

Heya TigerD, my apologies first for any headaches my bearded Mike may have caused you. Truth is, I was not aware that a prob existed until I heard from Rawn. Now I have to wonder, who else has had problems. (Er, it seems safe to assume that this is not just a prob with my bearded Mike, since Mitch made his own, but that there is a prob with using the grouping tool and ProPak in general.)

ChromeTiger ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 2:06 PM

This is an issue with the way Pro Pack reads CR2 files, which is slightly different. You may run into this with some older clothing items as well... The solution is simple, but can be somewhat tedious. It involves opening the CR2 in a text editor (Wordpad will usually do) and removing each line that consists ONLY of the letter 'g' (no quotes). Resave the file, and it should now open in Pro Pack without the missing polygon problem. Hope this solves it for ya... CT

aleks ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 2:43 PM

umm... before you try chrometiger's solution try this: delete the .rsr file from your geometries library that goes with mike. they get corrupted sometimes and produce such errors. poser will rebuilt them next time you load mike in your scene or load pz3.

Mitch1 ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 2:46 PM

ChromeTiger I have a line that says: g Beard should I remove the g here? Also the file is saved as a PZ3 no CR2. Will this work with a PZ3 file?

williamsheil ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 3:10 PM

Mitch should I remove the g here? If I understand ChromeTiger the answer is NO! The 'g' refers to the group label (syntax is similar to the obj file format). If it is followed by any text ("Beard" in this case) then it is a valid group definition. The implication (without having read the tutorial myself) is that ProPack is putting some of the polygons into unnamed groups (the 'g' on a line of its own). These are the one that need to be deleted. This would apply to pz3 and cr2 files, the pz3s include the entire contents of any cr2 files that have been loaded into the scene. Bill

williamsheil ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 3:12 PM

Oh, and thanks for the tip ChromeTiger. Bill

Mitch1 ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 3:18 PM

I skiped the g Beard but after I saved in wordpad Poser doesn't recognizes it as a valid PZ3 file??!!!

williamsheil ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 3:55 PM

No explanation, I hope you didn't overwrite the original (always a bad idea if you are text editing). Did you make sure that you saved it as a text file, rather than rtf or unicode type. One thing I have noticed is that Poser saves documents using UNIX style 'newline only' style text rather than in in DOS/Windows or MAC style text, although neither of these formats seem to cause any problems for the parser when a document is loaded. Bill

ronmolina ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:01 PM

Aw the grouping problem. That was a biggy when the PP first came out. Ron

Mitch1 ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:11 PM

It was asking if I didn't mind to miss all the formating so i saved to RTF but PZ3. I think it might be easier redoing the beard grouping.

ChromeTiger ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:15 PM

Bill is correct, the answer is NO...if there's ANY text after the g, it's a valid group. In regards to the invalid PZ3 file after savig, it's possible that Wordpad saved it with a .doc or .txt extension, which would render it (no pun intended) unrecognizable by Poser as a PZ3. Make sure your file extensions are all shown in Windows, and verify that it still has the PZ3 extension. If it's anything else, change the extension back to PZ3, and you should be ok. CT

williamsheil ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:22 PM

Mitch You've got it there. Saving it as a RTF file will add extra non-ascii characters that will probably throw Poser off. Try saving it as a text file (but still with the pz3 extension) and ignore formatting warnings. Bill

shadownet ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:22 PM

Interesting. The only thing I still do not understand about all this is why some folks have problems and others do not, when using the same cr2 (my bearded Mike cr2 for example) in ProPak?

Mitch1 ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:34 PM

I'll try again, but is there a faster editor than wordpad that I could download. The file is too big for wordpad or my ancient PII dual 400 MHZ is too slow (56MB--its Michael 2 the bodysuit and theblunt cut in that file). I have to wait forever until it scrolls from one g to the next.

You might try: http://www.EditPadLite.com/ I use it, was free for non-commercial use last I checked.

cooler ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:49 PM

the best text editor I've found for Poser files, or anything else for that matter, is UltraEdit (45 day shareware but cheap at $35USD :-). You can read about it & d/l a trial version at... http://www.ultraedit.com/downloads/index.html

ChromeTiger ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 5:19 PM

The other thing you can use in Wordpad is Find and Replace...that'll search through thedocument for you, and save you a lot of scrolling. Just be careful what you delete. many a time I've corrected CR2 files and deleted a g I shouldn't have...and if that happens, it's easier to go back to your backup file and start over...

Did it!!! ChromeTiger you are a genious!!! How did you find about this stuff??!! Thank you!! Thanks Shadownet, I couldn't have done it without EditPadLite. And thanks to everyone that tried to help me. I've always said it, Rnderosity, in particular the Poser community rocks!!!

depakotez ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 7:51 PM

For EditPadPro use this regular expression string to search for lines with just g (Or capitol G)in them. that way you can delete them or add whatever you'd like after them to create groups. Wish more notepad/wordpad software supported these regular expressions. ^s*[gG]s*$ Tom

Here is a dedicated search & replace utility, freeware which supports regular expressions and much more.

Search and Replace has got me totally lost. I downloaded and installed it thinking it could automate the process I just went thru but as far as I can see it doesn't works

Mitch, please read the help again. You can enter whatever you want in the filetype box. It comes with some presets like html, but it will save your frequently used choices. Here is a screenshot. I just used it to change the Poser version in my cr2 files that were ProPack. The program is quite capable but like anything else, you can't just run and gun with it.

Please note also, in the "in Files" box, type in the name of the file you are working on to avoid processing the other obj files in the directory. Also, to find the relevant lines, type gn in the "search for" box. This will find g followed by the newline character. Uncheck the options and the search subdirectories, choose "pattern matching" for the search method. Leave the replace box empty. Make sure you are on the replace tab when you hit start. If you are on the search tab, it will find the instances but won't prompt for replacement. I'd suggest using Word but it won't find the newline character. I'm sure there are other ways but I'm not about to suggest any :-) Good luck.

Thanks Mitch, I'm glad the solution was indeed a solution. I can't take credit for figuring out the answer, only for remembering it. I don't recall at this point who the person was who originally tracked down this little devil of a problem, but being in the Technical Support field, I tend to squirrel away answers to problems like that. Glad it worked! CT

lmckenzie, this utility is very useful. Just grabbed it and gave it a whirl. I can see lots of uses for this. Thanks for mentioning it. Rob

lmckenzie ( ) posted Mon, 05 August 2002 at 3:35 AM

Yor're welcome Rob. Actaully, I was using another one - BK Replacem - that I didn't really like. Another thread prompted me to go looking again and I found this one which is much nicer. Just be careful to test before doing any mass replacements. Like any multi-file S&R utility, it can quickly turn into a shredder :-)
