This sounds bad. Check if your memory got correct timing settings in the bios and use the test program. I have had memory that went bed like 3 weeks after i bought it and it took me a week to figure out it was the memory, i just had very random crashes. Especially with large (much mem consuming) scenes.

I click the "render animation..." button at the timeline , select the colour chanel and click on "Format Options" and instead of cinepak or whatever codec i choose uncompressed single images and under "browse" i choose a BMP instead of .avi (Vue doesnt change that automatically). When i choose contest.bmp as a file name, vue will name the first frame contest_000000.bmp and so on.

I am using Vue 6 Esprit on Windows XP.

Yeah i also hope the challenge will go again. Looking at the challenge pages it looks like this forum is DEAD. This can't be... <.<

I also hope we come back into a real monthly rhythm, I'd prefer it if lets say the October Challenge is from like 1st to 31st October, that would make it very easy to remember. Looking forward to that urban challenge, i hope only vue modeled buildings will be allowed, would make it more challenging then just buying a bunch of buildings somewhere and plopping these all over the area.

I always group all terrains that will become ecosystems before turning them into ecosystem - so i have 1 ecosystem to care about instead each terrain having a separate ecosys. This saved me loads of time.

For larger crowds make sure to use lower res figures/textures and place a few manually in front of the camera for closeups. Especially with depth of field this is saving some rendering time.

I'd love to learn something new but currently lacking the time. And maybe motivation...Where's someone to kick my butt when i need it?

I still dont get why anyone would want to torture himself with Vista - i mean what for? My XP is running fine and unless i really really have to i dont see why i should get Vista. It just slows down computers, makes many applications slow or not working at all and bugs me with nasty security notices. Doh!

My Tip: Forget Vista, use XP and you'll be a winner.

Invest the money for an additional gig of ram. Its really worth it.

You may be able to render your scene using external renderer, make sure to close down all possible other programs, services and tasks running in the background (WIndows kinda collects these, wasting memory). But you will have much more fun using 2 GB of ram.

Ewww, just read this thread. Yeah, I'm late as usual. I updated yesterday and at least i could now fix my small house. Still cant use like 10+ layers of booleans but with very flat structure i got rid of many anomalities.

I already wondered why one of my scenes rendered so unusually long, i had to set quality bias to -1 to get it rendered within a reasonable amount of time. Radiosity looks very well but it seems to have increased render times a lot on normal settings.

Before adjusting whole atmosphere light i would care about the materials. Try setting the material options for the palm leaves (use material browser).  Try playing with ambient lighting slides and maybe turn on "backlighted material" if it is off (it should be 1-sided and backlighted!). Try adjusting there first or you will change the whole scenery lighting (which may ruin the desired lighting effect).
