Now, can I bring that new .obj back into Poser with the new material names intact and develop characters with their own unique material names and UV mapping, if I should decide to remap them as well?

Radical interface, but once you get the hang of it, fast and easy to use. The Blender 2.0 manual is the better of the 2 books available. It's easier to refer to.

Blender is FREEWARE and still available at mirror sites, despite the company's recent collapse. You'll need a book-$40-50. An incredible bargain, and you can import .obj files into it, too!

The head room doesn't look that much more sophisticated than the customize player setup in NHL 2001, which sold for about $40 when it first came out. I'm surprised it wasn't done sooner.
