When I run Photoshop and InDesign on my AMD, they fly like no tommorrow. It's unreal how fast and silky they operate. But when it comes to Poser, it's a dog. Here's an example:Load up V3 (quick), Move her around with full tracking = just like on my Celeron 400. Select her face, and it takes 15 seconds for all the dials to show up. Move a parameter, and it takes another 5 seconds to display the change. Switch to box preview and it speeds up enough, but it's almost tittle for tattle same as my old Celly. I even setup a dual boot into win98se, just to see how much a diff it'd make (none) so...my guess is it's the Poser 4 software. AMD Sempron 2800+ (1.6Ghz) isn't a blistering choice, but it SHOULD be scads faster than the dumpster I replaced. For poser, it ain't. Everything else is blazing compared to the old Celly. Poser 4 renders are lightning quick, but the actual posing is pathetic.

Not a RAdeon, but a built-in SiS chipset that borrows from main mem. Sorry for the confusion. I had my Mac on the brain -- it has the R9200 and is a slug with OpenGL. Shared mem video slows everything down, no matter how big a CPU you have. So I"m getting a 5x00 series nV tomorrow. I"ll be sure to post my experiences with it.

Herky Jerky is when you move V3's arm and the display won't update until it's halfway down thru the motion, and you either overshoot where you want it to go, or have to grab the arm again and move it some more. It's like flying blind. Moving the slider/dials around is even worse. I like to keep those closed, because it takes so darn long for the display to update upon body part selection... Orbit the camera in a scene, even with textures turned off, results in skipping and lags. THAT'S herky-jerky. :-) On my system, Poser has this same problem, despite being unaffected by the video card (P4 can't use OpenGL acceleration) The memory fix might be the solution on that... The FX5x00 series is loathed by gamers, but will it work good for D|S? "Good" meaning -- end the herky jerky, smooth out the posing of V3 and other complex meshes (conforming clothes, scenes, etc) Local computer store has an nVidia 256meg AGP for $29...so tempted to scoop it up...

Oh, and it plays great on my Mac Mini! Lower bitrate will take that 125meg down to around 20...

The video was encoded at 9000 Kbps, when you can get away with 786kbps at the frame size you have. Avoid using the DV codec during editing...save your footage with uncompressed AVI. I'tll be huge, but when you render out the final WMV, it'll look sharp. DV and the other compression codecs soften and munge footage and details.

Would I be better off getting the ultra catsuit and making my own transmaps? Add a few accessories--- Got scared off of working with V3 and the suit, due to CPU load...it'd be laborious to work with all that on my current system.

If its OpenGL preview technology is as good as Daz Studio's, I'm getting P6. The main thing for me is SPEED in posing. I don't care if it takes all night to render a picture. I can sleep while it works... Any known issues with using ATi 9200 Mac video cards with P6?

There's no question software apps ported to Mac are terrible in speed, but I do know this: Poser and Daz Studio fly on PCs. I had a Celeron 400Mhz a few years ago, and it performed faster than my new Mac Mini for Poser. WEIRD. Badly ported software. Anyway, I've been away from PCs for so long, I'm bewildered at the selection these days. I'm hoping to find a dirt cheap $200 AMD box or soemthing like that...intel'd work fine, too...
Thread: How to get rid of James | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I found a way to do this in Poser 4. The file to edit is called "default.figure". Inside it looks like this: { version { number 3.0 } //-------------------------------------------------------- // These are commented out lines. You can switch these and/or modify // the name to change the default figure //-------------------------------------------------------- // readScript GetStringRes(1032,24) // readScript ":Runtime:libraries:character:People:Casual Man.cr2" // readScript ":Runtime:libraries:character:Poser 4 Lo:Casual Man P4 Lo.cr2" //readScript ":Runtime:libraries:character:Poser 2 Lo:Casual Man P2 Lo.cr2" In your file, it'll have refs to James. Just put two forward slashes in front of the line that calls for him.

Thanks guys. Just knowing I have a means of altering my V2 figure is enough to make me do handsprings. I'm comfortable in Wings3D, so...this is good. Geep's got Magnet tuts? Off I go...

V3 base brings my system to its knees. It's slightly better in DazStudio, but still a pain to WAIT 5 seconds everytime I spin a dial or move a slider. I want a system where I spin the dial, I see the result at the same time. Used to be that way with original P4 figures... Stahlratte: you have GOT to show me how to do that!! 've tried using magnets in the past, but could never get them to work. Can V2's obj import into Wings, and just move stuff around in that, without bothering with magnets? If so, I'd be all set... I also have Vicky1 Low Res...I could really do some stuff with her...

Have you tried using different RAM chips? Macs and PCs are different, sure. But one thing they share in common is ram timing. I had nothing but weirdness for weeks when I upgraded my ram. Turns out the ram stick's clock speed was using an unsupported multiplier. It'd work fine for awhile, but then it'd freeze up, crash, reboot unexpectedly...you name it. My ram sticks have to use whole number timing, like 7ns and 10ns, instead of 5.5ns or 8.5ns. Newer AMD cpus may have a much lower tolerance to these ns timings than previous editions. If you transplanted your old ram to the new mobo/cpu, then that could be the culprit. What you're describing is a memory I/O issue, and having the wrong ram can cause disk drive corruption, stuttering audio, out-of-sync video, etc. You may not have to buy new sticks. Your bios might have an option to ratchet the speed down or up...
