I like Judy. Here she is as a half-dark elf monk. Both Don and Judy are rather versatile, I don't see why people don't like them more. My only problem is it's a pain in the butt trying to find any clothes that fit them, much less ones with a mideval look (had to retexture Judy's jogging shorts and top here, and it kind of shows, sadly.)

dialyn ( ) posted Mon, 26 May 2003 at 10:32 PM

Thip has a one of those QuickSuits for Judy that could be manipulated into some sci fi/fantasy gear. I don't know now how to model, sigh, and my attempts have been bizaare and discouraging, so I can't help out. But I agree, Don and Judy really haven't been given a fair chance. Oh well. I like your elf monk. :)

I think Don has a lot of potential, and so does Judy. Need to work more with these models.

Pretty version of Judy. But I always liked her flexible look. :)

Don can be very flexible and the face room works best for him than it does for judy. This is an image that i did a while back and since you all showing your dons and judy I show mine :)

Those are all very nice images. I like them as well, but rarely use them since there isn't much available for em. Have any of you bought the HMann Judy pack? I've been looking at that for a while, but just haven't picked it up yet. I do wish these two were supported more.

EricofSD ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 3:07 AM

I have the Judy plus on my wish list. Yes, I agree, should be supported more.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 3:49 AM

Funny :o) Everybody seems to agree that Judy and Don needs more support. But they haven't bought the stuff made for them ;o) Merchants prefer to make things that SELL, remember. If you want support for Don/Judy go BUY some of the stuff offered for them. Oh an I agree that Don is unfairly neglected. And Judy too. If ONLY she had a prettier face. I don't need another super model, but... I mean.. Judy is UGLY beyond belief. She's even uglier than I am L I actually like Don. He's great for when you need a less bulky male than Mike but still needs something else than "Victor".

ernyoka1 makes a good point. My experience is that making items for Don and Judy is not worth the time spent. Perhaps this will change as more folks purchase Poser 5. Shame really because I'd like to do more for them.

H Mann's Judy ++ is a wonderful addition to the girl...as most of Harvey's stuff tends to be. What would be a seller, at least for me, is creating new cr2's for existing clothing, so that Judy and Don could wear them. I do most of my rendering in Vue, and have done the P4 file copy that lets me do the export of the P5 kids. But until Vue works out the dynamics import (drooooool), the old fashioned conforming stuff is all there is.

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 8:29 AM

Wow, the French Don is pretty hunky. I'm not much on the Furries, but I like Little Dragon's lion too. Actually, I do buy all I can find that I like for Judy and Don. I won't buy eveything because it's not all to my taste, but I've bought all the real life clothes I can find. I don't want to get into the tiresome quibble about Judy's looks. I would have thought we had gotten to a point in the world where we could look at a difference as just another variation instead of labeling it "ugly." She's very good for those times when you need diversity in a graphic and get tired of chewing memory with Vicky 3's injectables (Vicky 3 is the main reason I can't take Poser 4 off my computer). She particularly benefits from careful lighting....she becomes warm in a way the plastasoid Vickys-Barbies often don't. EricofSD is obviously a master of lighting Judy and Don...makes all the difference. I think Don and Judy have gotten left behind but not necessarily because they are bad models. Oh well. I'll continue working with them as I can. If I wasn't such a failure at modeling, I'd probably give clothing for them a try but I'm putting that on my list of things not to spin my wheels on. (And yes, I am a drop out of Phil C.'s tutorial, and all the others....not everyone can be good at everything. I'm still trying to figure out just waht I'm good at, I guess.)

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 8:31 AM

P.S., the first Don I posted is wearing Syyd Raven's Zane texture for Michael. The one below is Don in his own texture but with Azl's Skin Toners applied. Too much fun to be able to change skins, isn't it?

Tomsde ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:20 AM

Has anyone seen or can anyone refer me to a site that offers facial hair props or textures for Don. The default texture for Don is too boyish for my tastes, though I think he would serve well where one wants a teenage young adult. I think I would try to use him more if I could get a more masculine look with him. I use Micheal primarily because I can make him look more masculine and less like an adolescent fashion model. I must confess that I am impressed with what people have done with Don and Judy here. I have been working mostly in P4 with PP, but if the new service release pack for P5 does it's job I may start working more with it. Even if I use P4 I still use the Firefly Engine to render my scenes.

Berserga ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:28 AM

"I would have thought we had gotten to a point in the world where we could look at a difference as just another variation instead of labeling it "ugly."" No , no the problem isn't so much that she is ugly, It's that her features immediately jump out at you as being un-natural like Micheal Jakson. :D Don on the other hand I think looks pretty natural. I mean c'mon Posette is far more convincing than Judy. And talking about to many barbie doll vicki's isn't Vicki's fault, she has all the morphs nessisary to craft some very interesting women of all proportions. Most just don't do that much with her. I find, when working on a character, it's actually a lot easier to start with pretty and try to turn it ugly... or perhaps "Less perfect" would be more apt, than vice versa. BTW I agree that the face room's random face seems pretty don-centric but if you need a moremannish, or older woman you can sometimes get some pretty interesting Judy faces with lots of tweaking.

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:30 AM

Well, you can use Michael textures on Don, so if Michael has facial hair, so will Don. I don't see Don as being a teenager myself. He seems older to me...maybe it's my eyes that are older. EricofSD's French guy certainly is not a teenager. The drawback, as we have said, is that there isn't as much in the way of clothes for Judy and Don so that limits their usefullness. Thip does have free Quicksuits for Don and Judy in PoserStyle's freestuff (don't need a membership to get to it) which opens the possibilities for the modelers among you. Some people have said they can create dresses out of it though I've no clue how. And there is a tutorial for using the Quicksuits in case anyone is confused (I'm always confused).

I respectfully agree to disagree about Judy.

Berserga ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:36 AM

file_60168.jpg

Here is a Judy face I made, about a week after P5 came out. (so please forgive the awful Dynamic hair.) Oddly enough I wasn't going for an asian look, it just sort of happened while I was trying to "Fix" Judy's eyes. :D Since then I have made several, interesting looking characters, but this is the only one I'd call pretty. I need to mess around with her more and see what I can come up with.

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:43 AM

Yeah, unfortunately, I didn't save her settings. :( But she did show me that Judy has a lot of possibilities. No, she's not pretty...but I think she looks realistic and strong. I rather like her. :) I'm eccentric that way.

Berserga ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:46 AM

Say, Dialyn That's a pretty cool Judy character. Very un-judy. I'd have to say that falls a bit under the Mannish facial features I was talking about. Did that start as a Random face? When I looked close I have to say she looks a bit like Kurt Russel.:D Could be the eyes or could be the lighting. still I'd say she looks good, and more importantly, not like Judy. Bravo.

Berserga ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:48 AM

Darn I screwed up yer post by deleting mine. -_- God I wish they'd update this place and give us an edit button!

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:51 AM

Yes, I did start with a random face and then played with the settings. I have no retentive memory of what those settings were, unfortunately. I'll grant the resemblance....but, let's say for my nerves, she could be his sister rather than Kurt Russell. ;)

Berserga ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:54 AM

hehehe The scary part is I think she's kind of atractive. (I can't say the same about Mister Russel.)

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:54 AM

P.S. There is a setting in Poser 5 for giving Don (or Judy) a beard. It's in the face room. :)

Tomsde ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 10:57 AM

I assume the beard setting is similar to Micheal's beard/mustache morphs, but you still need a texture map with a beard texture to use on it. I suppose one could morph the beard, select the area and spawn a prop beard, but then you'd still have to design a texture map for it. I'm wondering is Micheal Millineum beard will work on Don, since it is a prop already. I don't own it yet, but if anyone can test it out and let me know it would be a compelling reason for me to purchase it.

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 11:06 AM

file_60169.jpg

No, there actually is a setting in the face room that causes there to be a texture provided. It's not perfect, by any means, but it does allow for a 5 o'clock shadow fairly easily.

OK, inspired by this thread I decided to give Judy a chance. After about an hour of dial twisting and tuning this is what I came up with. The Firefly renderer has made some strange results, she looks like she has hair in her nose *yuck* and there's something smeared at her left chin but.. She ended up surprisingly well, I think :o)

I think she appreciates the efforts. :) I've had some pretty strange results myself....but it is possible for Judy to turn into a good character actor for scenes. This is Don with a Milleneum Beard. I guess you can do it but I have to say, off the top, it takes a lot of manuevering to get it into place. Don's head appears to be larger than Mike's. I'm drawing no conclusions from that, but it made fitting the beard a little awkward for someone like me who isn't an ace at manipulating things into plac.e

Great pic ronstuff :o) The thing that usually gives away Don (And Posette for that matter) iis the nose. There's something about the nostrils that just doesn't look right to me. But on your pic only one out of four has the "Don nose" :o) Well done.

Thanks, ernyoka Actually one of the guys in the conversation picture is Don without any modification (except textures and clothing), so naturally he has Don's nose ;-) How do you like THIS one? These guys are all Don too (also one is unmodified). I haven't had time to post it to the gallery yet, but it won 1st place in a recent RDNA contest. When I do get around to putting it in my gallery, it will be dedicated to YOU because if features so many of your props! it is Titled "Saturday Afternon" and I hope you like it. Thanks for all the great props you have contributed to the community. As you can see, I used a LOT of them here. Your work is truly fantastic. Ron

Aww blush That's a great pic too. And I love to see when people actually USE my stuff so this is a "double great" pic L Heh and I've spotted Don ;o) He's the one leaning over the car, in black, right? But I'm amazed of how different you've managed to make him look. Oh btw, is crosstalk really gone in P5? I rarely use more than one character in each pic so I haven't really tried it with multiple "Dons" or Vickies or whatever...

Yeah it is. Did you know that If you put Don and Judy in the same Poser 4 scene they Crosstalk! Now that is truly scary. I mean one actually turns into the other. Only tried it once but it was kinda creepy. :D

Berserga ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 4:25 PM

BTW... Nice pics Ronstuff, and ditto about ernyoka's props being great. I plan on using lots of them in my animation. (Whenever I get outta this creative rut.)

ronstuff ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 4:54 PM

I think crosstalk in P5 is greatly reduced but perhaps not completely eliminated - and depends on the figure. It should not stop you from using multiple figures, which I do most of the time - haven't personally experienced it yet though. What I like most about the P5 figures is that they are plain and ordinary people with few "distinctive" features, but that makes them easily converted into other people. On the other hand Michael and Victoria are so distinctive that it is hard to "mask" or "hide" those distinctive features and make them look like anything but themselves or their own blood relatives. I also think that the P5 figures pose much better than anything DAZ has ever produced. You can bend their arms and legs practically into pretzels and their joints don't "crack" - if you try to fold Vicky's arms in front of her or bend her knees to a sitting position you almost always get nasty tears at the joints. This rarely happens with Don and Judy, so they are a real pleasure to pose. With just a couple of hours in the face room, I created 10 very attractive Judy's and 10 good-looking Dons without much fuss. To be honest, I like their "ordinary" appearance because I know a lot more people in real life who look like Don and Judy than I know who look like Michael and Victoria. I'll keep Michael and Vicky for those fantasy scenes and stick with Don and Judy for the reality scenes.

Thanks for this very useful discussion... I've been sitting on my hands for a month, trying to decide whether or not to buy Poser, but while $180 is within my range, the extra $150 for Vickie and Mike and all their morphs have really put me off. It's nice to hear that what I want to do (make realistic looking people, rather than idealised figures) using the basic program. Maybe I'll have to order the software, afterall... :)

dialyn ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 2:08 PM

The only problem is there are few clothes for Don and Judy. You need to take Vicky's vast accessories into account when making your decision.

Caly ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 2:15 PM

With a Platinum Club membership, Vicki 3 and morphs and clothes etc come out pretty cheap as well. Just look at all the 1.99 stuff for her. And that Ninja Suit for Michael is great. The RDNA $2.50 Real Deals have a lot of stuff for the Millenium folk. Let's not forget PhilC's terrific initially 1.99 set of lingerie for V3, and the cool shoes pack he did for same initial price... A lot of the freebie sites out there have tons of stuff for the Millenium folk as well. The Poser 5 folk just don't have the same kind of support network.

tommy_teardrop ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 6:54 PM

What I've been thinking of doing is rendering some squalid futuristic street/waystation scenes... there's quite a lot of clean and lovely sci-fi stuff to buy out there, but I need dirty clothes and grimy faces. I've been looking across the market places trying to decide if it's worth buying Poser. I can't find any pre-made stuff at all, it seems to be all clean living or dungeon master stuff, except when people aren't wearing any clothes! So I guess I'm going to have to make my own clothes anyway... Which in a sense is good, as I find it hard to legitimise (from this side of the owning/not-owning Poser wall) a Platinum account with Daz. sigh

All this thinking is really tough, but you should see how bad imported 3dmax figures look in Bryce, using homemade textures. Blarggg...
