I'm not sure how I'm up to typing this. I just figured I should let people who use my stuff know that I'm only conscious and rational 10% of the day right now. If I do get an email, it might be days before I reply. I have a methicillin resistant strep/staph infection (word is still out on whether it's clemdemycin resistant) for which I was initially prescribed Keflex (a cousin to penecillin). I am not an unclean person normally but this infection gave me nasty boils. I've developed an allergy probably to the Keflex so now my skin is completely covered in hives. Ever had everything itch beyond belief? even inside your mouth and stuff? As a result I'm on the verge of a nervous breakdown because I can't handle this much pain and irritation at once. I've been shot up with a hospital-grade antihistamine, which means that part of the day I'm unconscious and the other part I'm insane and only itching on half my skin. Then to add to this, I cannot afford the next stage of antibiotic I was prescribed at the ER, and it was prescribed after 5 yesterday so even if I could have I could not get the money out until Saturday if I'm lucky, Monday otherwise. And it might turn out that the bacilli are immune to that, too, making me waste $140 (one for me, one for Audrey) on the clemdemycin. If I'm lucky I'll get lab results back before I buy it. Which I cannot afford to do. The palms of my hands are bruised. I can only guess it's from clenching my fists in my sleep. And to top it all off I'm getting strepthroat or something causing laryngitis. And if I cannot handle all of this, which I'm not sure I can, I may just die. That would suck but at lest it would not hurt.

Marque ( ) posted Sat, 05 July 2003 at 12:52 AM

You need to not worry about your stuff, worry about getting well...I'm sure we can wait until then with any questions. Just concentrate on healing. Lighting a candle for you now. Marque

Kendra ( ) posted Sat, 05 July 2003 at 1:16 AM

Oh, jeez. Now I understand your post in the merch forum. I can't imagine, all I can say is hang in there. Keep us posted when you can and I'll say a prayer.

Sheesh Dodger when it rains it surely pours doesn't it!?!? Don't worry about anything other than getting better. Everything else is trivial at this point :-) Good luck to you and yours in getting well again /gz

SothArtist ( ) posted Sat, 05 July 2003 at 2:23 AM

Not being funny... but those of us who can afford it could make like $5 or 10 donation if you have paypal. That may sound silly but all of us have need a little help at times. Let me know if it would help dodger.

c1rcle ( ) posted Sat, 05 July 2003 at 2:55 AM

Hey dodger don't you worry about us, you get yourself & your missus fit & well, we'll all be thinking of you till we hear you're better.

Turtle ( ) posted Sat, 05 July 2003 at 6:46 AM

Hang on Dodger!!!! Please don't give up. Sleep as much as you can, rest, Do not give into the depression this illness has caused you. It sounds like the cure (Keflex) is worse than first infection. This sure sounds like a catch 22 medical treatment. This Country USA has terrible health care for people who don't have great insurance plans. It breaks my heart, my own Daughter had Eplisty and terrible asthma, the doctors over treated the seziures and the medication, supressed her breathing and she died. Her mental state sounded like Dogers, just hanging in there knowing something terrible is going on in his body. Doctors first lesson is-(First do no harm). Go back to the hospital and get admitted so you can get your medication. Shame on the usa, we care more about money for war than people.

Love is Grandchildren.

Dodger, we don't know each other, but I was shocked to read your post. I'd like to wish you a speedy recovery, just try to hang on in there. I also agree with SothArtist and Genny regarding contributions - after all, this IS a community... I am sure that there are more people here who would be glad to provide some practical help - (just accept this, you are very well respected here). I see that there is a Paypal Donate button on your artist's page - does this reach you quickly?, or is there another way? Rob

ditto with TH : is there a convenient and quick way to help you ?

estherau ( ) posted Sat, 05 July 2003 at 8:07 AM

Hi Dodger, ooh sounds terrible. You need to rest as much as you can. I know for a fact that ultraviolet light kills that sort of staph so if you can get into the sun that would be great. I used to work with an orthopod and whenever one of his patients got that staff we had to take them out into the sunlight. It really worked. and if you're up to it, getting salt water up your nose in the sea and washing out the virulent staph might help. Hopefully you'll then be recolanized with a less virulent strain. that's the best I can think of without going into hospital for intravenous antibiotics. In the days before they had antibiotics, when people got TB it was a virtually a death sentence, but there were places called sanitoriums or something where they used to go to the mountains and live in the fresh air, and they were forced (sick as they were) to run along in the morning dew. And some of them actually did quite well. Love and best wishes, Esther

Ye gods....you really are burning up all your bad karma at one go! :( Hang in there I'll say a prayer to The Lady that the antibiotics take hold soon, but in the meantime, who knows how to get a Paypal arrangement set up quickly?? I know of another 'Rosity artist who struggles with expensive health problems and a very small income and I have wished there was a sort of 'emergency medical fund' that donations could be made to anonymously when an emergency arises.....

We don't know each other but I wanted to send you my best wishes. I know all too well what its like to be in a position where you can't get the meds you need. As soon as I'm able (unemployment bites soooo badly) I'm gonna grab some things from your store. My thoughts are with you. Take care of yourself. Warmly, Jo

CryptoPooka ( ) posted Sat, 05 July 2003 at 9:45 PM

I went through this with strep, Penicillin sent Pooka to the ER. Money was tight, and there I was having to buy ANOTHER antibiotic. I know the Rosity store money won't get to you in time, but at least you'll know it's THERE and will be on its way to you so a bill might be put off. Hubby couldn't argue with this reasoning for me to pick up the Pumpkin Man. If someone wants Dodger's JICC robot, shoot me an IM. I can only afford one with my store credit, so first IM gets it. Hang in there, Dodger -- and do NOT scratch those hives!

Patricia ( ) posted Sat, 05 July 2003 at 11:49 PM

The store was a great idea--I'd been wanting the cowl and the toga both, and now I've got them and there'll be a bit more $$ waiting for you, Dodger, next time you're conscious enough to collect it ;) A lukewarm bath with 2 cups of oatmeal thrown in will help to sooth the hives, though it makes an incredible mess. Try to avoid hot water entirely--it makes the itching worse.

compiler ( ) posted Sun, 06 July 2003 at 4:53 AM

Mmmh. I already had Mike's toga and Mike's cowl... So I sent you somthing via paypal to help you buy these antibiotics. Hope you'll get better soon. We miss you. Best wishes Compiler

_dodger ( ) posted Sun, 06 July 2003 at 5:34 AM

Thanks for the support. I can eat again. I think that's a good sign. I haven't been able to eat much for a week. It's the first week in ages that I haven't been complaining about the bare larder, so I think Audrey is somewhat relieved. I choked down a can of chicken soup AND some tuna noodles tonight. Before that, it had been realy mostly water and Coke and that 2% fruit Korean flavoured water stuff. I think my entire week before tonight consisted of a Taco Time burrito, a nasty Carl's Jr. breakfast quesadilla, two weird sausages (one had feta in it, I remember), and some Nachos. (No, I han't had a fetish for mexicanish stuff, that's just what happened). Well, I'd been looking to lose weight. Heh. The itching has gotten less, though the hives seem as bad. The places BETWEEN the hives look bruised (and may be for all I know). Actually, I don't know if the itching has gotten less. Maybe I'm just getting used to it. Yuck. All my joints HURT. Like someone beat me all over on every joint with a ball pean hammer. The body parts are swollen, too. Maybe I should make the best of this and get a camera over here to start working on 'Gross Horrible Pariah Leper' for Michael 3. Heh.

genny ( ) posted Sun, 06 July 2003 at 7:33 AM

Hey Dodger, I am sure Patricia's recommendation about the oatmeal in the bath works, but there is a product out there called "AvenoBath" which will do the same thing except it is not quite as messy. I used it when all three of my kids had the "ChickenPox" all at the same time.........believe me, They would have put me in the funny farm if it wasn't for this stuff! How many times can a kid tell you they are "itchy" LOL! You can get it in most drug-stores but where I live you can also buy it at the grocery-store. genny

GraphicFoxx ( ) posted Sun, 06 July 2003 at 11:31 AM

Patricia ( ) posted Sun, 06 July 2003 at 7:51 PM

At least there's no need for you to fear that the Grim Reaper has you in his sights.....From what you say, I'd guess you're too sick to die ;) (Just a little black humour. Hope you're on the mend by the time you read this. The awful smell might be a side effect of one of the meds you've had to take, BTW....or it might be you! Taken your oatmeal bath yet? ;)

_dodger ( ) posted Mon, 07 July 2003 at 2:56 AM

If the grim reaper comes near, I'll give the motherfucker boils. Heh.

duanemoody ( ) posted Tue, 08 July 2003 at 5:14 PM

When I had chicken pox in my mid-twenties, Aveenobath oat bath powder was my only friend (that, and a tattered blue bathrobe that made me feel like Arthur Dent). At the very least it will return the oils in your skin to something resembling normal. Benadryl makes a topical antihistamine mixed with calamine lotion by the name Caladryl. Unlike calamine lotion it doesn't crust off in bed but sticks to your skin after it dries (remove with warm water). That was my other other friend as I recall. We're crossing our fingers for you.

_dodger ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 5:28 PM

I'm starting to feel better. The hives are pretty scarce on me now. Seems cold exacerbates them and sweating makes 'em better for some reason. I tried going out the other day and that was a boo-boo. Almost came back in a box. Though I got to see the extreme of human stupidity. I'd sat down out front Barnes and Noble about 10 minutes before they opened and some guy came up and asked 'How ya doin?' and tried the door, then checked the hours, checked his watch, and then tried the door again. Like, somehow, now that he verified they were, in fact, closed, maybe the door would suddenly be open. I wished I'd had a remote control on that door, so I could have opened the lock while he rad the time, and when he tried it again it would be unlocked. Then he'd find himself inside a store that's not open with the employees all going 'get the hell out of here, you idiot!' in nicer words. But the door thing wasn't the stupidest part. It was the fact that he looked dead straight at a guy (me, squatting leaning against the wall) who was covered with 1/4 inch thick flourescent pink hives, sweating profusely in the morning cold, shaking, twitching, hyperventilating (I was having an athsma attack on top of the hive attack), and he had the vacuity of mind to casually ask 'how ya doin?' I think I muttered 'fine' but I don't honestly remember.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 6:19 PM

Hang in there ... I have only had one contact with hives and that was on my dog (didn't know they could get them) but I woke up and pet her and she was bumpy fromhead to toe. had no clue what to do and I felt really bad because she mostly felt fine but no one wanted to touch her because quarter sized lumps just really aren't suppossed to be everywhere. It took a few days but she got better. Good luck with em and take care. Hate it when idiots show their true mode. Had a similar experience last year when I had my gall bladder out. Looked like garbage and someone asked me "how ya doin'?" .. just wanted to shake my head and ask how you think?" but was too gross at the time.

GraphicFoxx ( ) posted Thu, 10 July 2003 at 11:01 AM

Good to hear you're doing better _dodger. Keep hanging in there, and you'll make it through. I can relate to seeing the stupidity you encountered. I work graveyard in a grocery store, and see incredible stuff almost every night. Just when you think people can't be more dumb, they do something else. Anyway, keep resting up, and get better man!

_dodger ( ) posted Thu, 10 July 2003 at 3:52 PM

I work graveyard in a grocery store, and see incredible stuff almost every night. I used to wrk late night in a convenience store and was constantly amazed by people, including the 450+ lb. woman who came in evry night and bought three boxes of Twinkies and a 600ml diet Coke. It was the absurdity of the diet Coke... like, I was thinking 'hun, that ain't gonna make a difference after you snarf down those Twinkies.'

compiler ( ) posted Thu, 10 July 2003 at 4:37 PM

She was^probably just feeling so bad and so ashamed for not being able to stop buying the tweekies that she had to amend by buying diet coke. This was not stupidity, this was addiction. She was probably more ill than dumb. Somtimes pathology is not written on your skin but shows in your actions. Best wishes for your recovery, Dodger.

leather-guy ( ) posted Sat, 12 July 2003 at 10:17 PM

"Diet Coke" Always the possibility she just liked the TASTE of the diet Coke - Not that fond of it, myself, but my favorite beverage is Diet Pepsi. I'll go thirsty, or drink plain water before drinking any sugared soda, because I'm used to it, and the sugar leaves a horrible aftertaste in my mouth. Always. On the rare occasions I splurge, and eat something like an ice-cream cone or pastry, I always follow it with a Diet Pepsi to get rid of the sugar aftertaste. Just a random comment...... Hope you're improving every day _dodger. Hang in there... I've been laid up for 5 weeks from a herniated disk. I cost myself an extra 2 weeks of pain by doing too much too soon. I hate feeling fragile, and refused to let others do for me. Be patient, and don't overdo it. You'll be better before you know it.
