Subject: Help! how to change DSC prefix on new cam so don't overwrite images

tvernuccio ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 12:11 PM · edited Sun, 20 October 2024 at 3:02 PM

Help!!! Now I have Two Cams-both Sony--both creating image names with prefix DSC. Is it possible to change DSC prefix to something else on my new cam so we don't have problem of overwriting images?????????

tvernuccio ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 12:14 PM

i could start another folder i guess. new folder for new cam images. that would prevent problem of overwriting images?????

cynlee ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 12:27 PM

sounds like a good idea... as i have new folders for my new Oly... but i would think you would get a warning before it wrote over previous images? don't think i'm the one to answer this one :/

jcv2 ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 12:27 PM

Just open in Explorer, click on file and rename it. Renaming a lot? I have methods for that! Takes some investment but ideally for renaming! The manual of the cam could tell you perhaps to change names - or let them sequentially give numbers.

tvernuccio ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 12:46 PM

kemal has read manual...doesn't say anything about it, jc. renaming sounds like a pain in the butt, jan-carel. how you do it when you rename a lot....what methods? cindy...no idea if i would get warning, but it makes sense. you would think that would happen. i'm thinking maybe just starting entirely new folder might be best way. we'll see if i get other suggestions....

for my point of view the best create a new user so when hi or she logs on will have a personal workspace witout interfering in yuor workspace or folder so I thing yuo do not need to rename end so on... this is just me..... unfaithful dtp

tvernuccio ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 2:13 PM

yes, that's a great idea!!!! we each have our own PC though, so we already have separate workspaces and folders.

i think the way we're gonna do it is Kemal will rename his images. he found some kind of free software that makes it easy for him to do. It's called Rename Master.

jcv2 ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 4:41 PM

Rename Master... Hmmm, sounds like something I would do by hand. If it's free, well, why not?

  1. My method is complicated
  2. Open dos-box (cmd.exe)
  3. Go to directory with pictures
  4. Type dir *.jpg /on >renjpg.bat
  5. Start Excel and open renjpg.bat (all files)
  6. column 1 names, typing in column 2 names that shoud be the name, e.g. Pict0731.jpg
  7. etc. etc. etc.

I shall stop here, blah blah blah, it's just a way to rename a series of files that is easily numbered and I think Rename Master will do that better!

tvernuccio ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 4:52 PM

you would ENJOY doing this by hand??? Yep...you're an IT Man for sure!!!! sounds confusing, complicated and time-consuming to me!!! Yowser! my head is spinning trying to makes sense of what you say....LOL!!! Thanks though. if i was smarter about these things maybe it wouldn't be so difficult!!! hey, Jan-Carel... you notice i made clickable link in #7 of this thread. My first HTML I ever did!!! takes a bow. pretty soon i'll be making scrolling messages!!! then webpages!!!! well, maybe not webpages....

jcv2 ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 4:57 PM · edited Thu, 06 January 2005 at 4:58 PM

Wowow! You did it, Sheilasis! Your very first a href and it works! looks very proud of you I usually add something special on Rendo. Normally links open in the same window. But then you lose the open webpage. I do that by adding target="_blank", so it becomes Click Here!. Yeah, I know, I make it sometimes too easy for people :) About renaming - Excel is easy for renaming more than 20 names, with succesive numbers. Easy then for me, but I'm used to do many things with Excel.

i don't even know what Excel is. LOL. seriously, absolutely NO idea. the last computer class i took was in 1990. i like to learn things, but i've been busy learning other things i guess!!! anyway, thanks for showing me how to new way to make clickable link. i shall copy and paste, and next time i wanna do it...just copy and and pasate, change address, and there you go!!! done! thanks for tip!!!!

jcv2 ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 5:10 PM

Life is pushing buttons, copying and pasting! LOL! You're so honest! Men would say yeah yeah yeah, but women say, what's Excel? Excel is part of Microsoft Office Suite, Like MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access. I work a lot with Excel and it provides for me opportunities to tackle problems like renaming a bulk fo files.

tvernuccio ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 5:21 PM

i've heard of MS Word and MS PowerPoint. that's all though. well, nothing to be ashamed of at confessing my ignorance. i'm smart about other things. need to be analyzed...well, ya'all can come to me! the doctor is IN!!!!! LOL. I'm still 7 classes away from psychology degree so i shall make you sign waiver first...before you lie on couch. Then you pay me $100 an hour!!! for my friends in forum though, first session is on the house!!!! LOL Jan-Carel...don't think you need too much analyzing. i give you clean bill of health. however..... HC and the lovely Miss PDA....step right up please!!!! scratches head Let's see....tell me more about this "Mothership of yours..." LOL

Not sure about Sony cams but on my Canon, I have various ways..ie, continuous which just adds a number to my files...so that way, no two files will ever have the same 'number'...maybe Sony have this? just my 2 pounds worth :)

tvernuccio ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 8:57 PM

thanks, Jimbo!!! we are doing that "continuous" mode thingy. the problem is we have 2 sonys...both with same prefixes. Kemal's cam records images as DSCxxxx, and my cam records images as DSCxxxx (just the same). so...if kemal takes image # DSC1000, and i take image # DSC1000 (which doesn't have to be at same time, but it still might come up), then we got a problem with overwriting. the other problem is let's say i use half my card. kemal's card is full. i take my card out of cam and give it to him so he can take more pics. ok... kemal's camera counter could have already reached the point to try to overwrite the images which might have the same number already on the card recorded by my camera. make sense? it's confusing to me. so far the best way we can figure out how to deal with this is for kemal to use ReName Master to rename HIS images. maybe that's gonna be the easist solution. perhaps there's a better, easier way without having to rename images but we haven't figured that out yet. thanks for your 2 pounds worth, Jim!!!!!

Well for the thing about if you put your card in his cam,you could make a second folder on the card,so it would put all his in that one. Then before he takes any pics, change the record folder, its in the set up screen under the memory section, second one on the list under format the card. As for on the computer, just put them in different folders. I know it saves them in seperate folders each time you upload them, each is dated then numbered. That is unless you use some other program to get the pics off, than the one that came with the camera's. I usually keep them in one folder dated for the day they were shot on. Even when I take some with my mom's camera, and it has numbers of pics that match some of my older ones. By being in folders by dates they dont overlap. If it ever happens that the numbers are close, just make a subfolder for his.

tvernuccio ( ) posted Fri, 07 January 2005 at 2:43 AM

thanks so much william!!!! this is very good to know. kemal and i didn't know we could have two folders on our card. I appreciate you telling me about this and how to do it!!!! We will definitely do this if we need to share cards!!! Ok...kemal and i came to decision about this. My new cam permits use of both compact flash and memory sticks (well, you know this William but others might not). so, we figured out easiest way to solve this problem and not have to take time to rename images, would simply be for me to use compact flash and Kemal to use memory sticks!!!!! Whew Problem solved!!!!! Thanks so much everyone for brainstorming and sharing your ideas and suggestions!!!!! you guys ROCK!!!!!!!

I guess I'm confused now? Are you talking about in camera? Why would the camera over-write the files? If they both have the same pre-fix shouldn't it just name the new file added to the folder with the next number? As jimry said this would seem to be a pretty standard thing. Maybe an experiment is in order. Take a pic on a clean card in kemal's camera and then stick the card in yours. Take a pic....... and see if it overwrites it or not. "the other problem is let's say i use half my card. kemal's card is full. i take my card out of cam and give it to him so he can take more pics. ok... kemal's camera counter could have already reached the point to try to overwrite the images which might have the same number already on the card recorded by my camera." As far as the counter goes.... It measures the space that is available on the card that happens to be in the camera. If you take out a full card and put in a half-full card, despite the fact that it may have come from a different camera, it should not effect anything. It will see that there is now space there, and will estimate how many images can be taken from that.

I am, therefore I create.......

tv Havent read it all there is two much and not enough time! You cant change the DSC prefix as this stands for Digital Still Camera. You could use a program like Irfan view to do a batch rename (free download in link) Like you have said it would be a good idea to have a new folder for new images. I use a simple (ish) system with a separate folder foe each camera Folder DSLR Folder T70 Scans Folder Fuji Digital And split them into location/category to make it easy to find what I am looking for For example: My documents/DSLR/Jpeg and have sub folders landscapes, macro, people etc Repeat the process for scans/Fuji etc

The Truth is Out There

LOL! I'm confused too Michelle!!!! let me see...how to explain. it confusing me and so i don't explain good. ...talkin' about current counter for image name and not counter for how many images you can make on a certain card. does that make sense? thanks Michelle for your input!!!! and LP...thanks to you too for your help and that link. we've decided the easiest way to do this will be for me to use compact flash cards. Kemal will use memory sticks. We each have our own PC, and our images are separated...his on his computer and mine on my computer. if we use separate cards we won't have to mess with renaming and stuff. thanks again guys!!!!

Apophis906 ( ) posted Fri, 07 January 2005 at 5:49 PM

Yeah, that works. I was saving up to get one of those micro drives for my next thing,so I can have a 4gb and never need to change out cards. Yeah, I am not for sure, but if the situation you talked about was to happen, I think it would write over it. Since the camera is useing its number system and not going by whats on the card. This would only be a problem if you were near in numbers, but your idea makes it that much simpler. I would recomend a SanDisk one, since they would be best for compatability.
