Subject: laser flower..any idea how they be done??

Thunderstone..the leaves look cool.. much beter than the first one you did...though i see you left the flowers and the stems as it is.
like fran..i am confused about the inversions.. huh?
i think i can tru witht eh mask and see.though i sued the color picker to pickup the white background..result..it was a bit rough ont he edges.. tolerance kept at 0. I guess I willhave to pump up the colors for it to show..
will you please explain about how you did the color inversions?
fran..the 2nd one looks good.. like you say..sad we can't get flowers like the originals on page one. did you have to saturate the colors more in photoshop? i seem to be getting very fade colors in bryce..even though i increased the transparency to neary 80..

Inversion... When you invert the colors in Photoshop... That what I meant by inversion. Try this... Open a new blank file in photoshop, make a magenta rectangle. Go to image menu, invert or use the short cut keys CTL + I . You will see that Magenta becomes Green. That is what I meant by inversion.  Now as for the flowers and stem... No, they were inverted too... I just use white or shade of gray to bring about the white color when I did the inversion.  Scroll up to the 4th or 5th post by me. It has the information about the color inversion.

The rough edge is caused by there being some black outline of AA... There's no way to get around that except by using Fine Art setting on rendering.  Transparency doesn't work nearly as well as using a lighter shade of magenta, I found out

I posted the pix of the original render and you can see how it first came out.
The flowers are in the shade of grays and the stems and leaves are in shade of magenta.

I don't understand.

Why do you need to change colours in PhotoShop, why not just change the colours in Bryce?

erosiaart,

I didn't do anything in PhotoShop, just Bryce. :b_confused:

Oh, I forgot, you don't have B6 Rosie do you?

That'll be why you're having problems with the colours, B5 and B5.5 don't play as nicely as B6 - I'll have to try it out with B5.5 as well...

Well I dunno, I tried it in B5.5, and got pretty much the same result: Then I realised I'd forgotten to use the XRay Sky preset, so I did it again, and it's only by studying it very carefully that you can see any difference, the one sitting behind, that you can just see one flower of - that's the one without the sky - or rather with just the default sky.

The stamens - or stamen's stalks, are just a tiny bit clearer, smoother - in the one with the XRay Sky.

Otherwise they both look pretty much like the B6 one...

I did a bit of smoothing in Wings with the model first since originally it rendered a bit blockily.

It seems to make quite a difference where you position the camera for the render, the lower relative to the item the darker the colours, the higher you are relative to the item the *brighter* the colours.

Yup same sky, all I did was to change the diffuse colour to - well, bluer.

See the image:

If this is not working for you, perhaps it's some other setting that I've changed?

I put a black simple material on the ground plane and turned all 3 of the sky settings in the first box to black, that's the Sun Glow Colour, the Sky Colour and the Horizon Colour.

That might be it.

I'm wondering if this inversion thing is more to do with creating your Bryce scene normally, rendering in normal light and then creating a negative image in say PS or PSP.

Exactly!!! but  you will have to know which colors are the negative.... in Bryce...

We all know... white is the opposite of Black. So that's that.... Take a look at the lily of the valley picture that I did early last week.  The black one is the negative of the one that I did in Bryce.

This is what I have been trying to get across to both Fran and erosiaart:

- after inverting your image in the image editor of your choice it can sometimes help to tweak brightness/
contrast/intensity, colour levels ect, but this also can be achieved all within Bryce, with material     settings tweaks. (apart from the image-inversion of course)

hence my little tips about the color inversion.

Fran's way is great but it is not what they talked about in the ReadMe text file that came with x-ray mat.

fran..try it with leaves....

any idea if adamite around? the creator of the xray mats.. i can't find him around. maybe we can get himto tell us what is happening here...

ThunderStone ( ) posted Tue, 04 March 2008 at 6:53 AM

I don't think Adamite is still around on RR... The mats were created like 5 years ago... He/She could have just vanished off the face of the earth, or just be abducted by aliens... Whatever...

I think the whole thing is to just do it in bryce and invert the colors in an image editor like the creator stated in the backroom forum. *

*IMPORTANT - Basic set-up is to apply any of the colored materials to a mesh, render with a WHITE background and the supplied sky preset, then later invert the colors of the pic to simulate the example given in the picture above. Tips and information in the .zip file. *

Where you're going to be, you'll still have access to the internet, so take your laptop with you and keep on rendering. I won't stop rendering if you keep trying. In the mean time, I came across a situation that I would like to render... It's a real cute one too!!! 😉

I still don't really understand why we can't use Bryce settings to achieve effects, why go the long way around and use Photoshop, when it's much quicker and easier in Bryce?

Anyway the original instructions are for x-rays, which are usually grey... aren't they?

And we are trying for Laser Flowers...  Which I think is more fun after all.

I can only find one small mention of inverting in PhotoShop (or other image editor) anyway.

Unfortunately I can't do any more playing right now cos I'm stuck waiting for a marble render to finish.... sigh.

I think you just need lots of layers of leaf for the x-ray transparency to show up, otherwise I think the x-ray green is working, it's just not showing up much...

If your green is going to yellow and white with the camera angle change, either that's unavoidable or else maybe start off with a deeper green and pick the green from the bluer end of the greens not the yellower side.

That might help.

Initialy I did some tests with Meta Balls with various colors and also some Spheres and the results were very dissapointing even bringing the image into photoshop to brighten didnt look good.  Especialy the spheres... I found no matter what color I picked I would get orange rings inside the sphere.. something I havent figured out yet.  I tried editing the sky preset so that I didnt have to bring it into photoshop for post work and that didnt  yield  good results either.

Skipping forward after a bunch of tests and such here is how I did the final image you see.

  1. Using Bryce v6.1 I used a couple of objects included with Bryce.

  2. Under  Objects > Misc >  I used  "Sweeping Spiral" and than I placed "Twisted Spiral" inside that.

  3. Since I was going to use the Photoshop Invert method.. I used the inverted color chart posted in this thread as a guide line.

4.  I used the Default X-Ray preset to create the final colors I was aiming for.

5.  The instructions confused me about using Camera Controls vs moving the object placement.  Regardless I used the Dolly Tools to move the view to where I wanted and paid close attention to the NANO Preview window as the position of my Object did make a big
difference in the end result.  I did a few large renders till I was happy with what I got.

6.  As per text file, I increased the Ray Per Pixel to maximum which is 256, and rendered to a file.

  1. Once in Photoshop... I inverted the picture first.  Now I could have rendered a "Object Mask" by this time I was tired and went the quick method.   I used the "Color Range" Method in photoshop to select the Black Background, and than I inverted my selection so that only my object bits were selected.

  2. I played with the Brightness/Contrast tool to get the desired result.

Fran: That is the idea... if you have JellyFish Models try them out... I bet it would look great.

Thanks for the info on your method, I'd never have thought to look at the Bryce objects for a spiral.

Getting back on topic.... I'm attaching a couple of photos of real translucent Deep Sea animals.

Should be able to make something up with standard Bryce Primitives.

I'm better at PhotoShop than I am with Bryce.

Now I was thinking of Posting the larger version of what I posted above in the gallery....should I? Does it need anything added to it??
