Subject: OT: Need some help with FTP please

Neyjour ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2008 at 8:17 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 4:25 PM

I have a large file I need to send to someone and they suggested I use FTP since Gmail can't handle it and I wasn't able to upload it to my R'osity file locker.

They've given me an FTP addy, username and password...but I don't know what to do with them.  I know nothing about FTP, and looking it up on Wikipedia didn't help at all.  My eyes started to glaze over after the second paragraph.

I've asked for help with it, but other than telling me I need a "client", they haven't been very forthcoming.  So I was hoping someone here could help me please?  How/where do I get a client?  Is it free or do I have to pay for it?  Is it some sort of program I need to download?

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!
Ney

What FTP Program are you using?

Download and install this one. I can do a screenshot tutorial for you so you know what to enter where :)

Thanks very much Acadia!  I'm downloading it now.

A screenshot tut would be extremely helpful.  I really appreciate that!  😄

Try this. If you need a picture tutorial, I can do up a short video if that will help

1.  Open the program

2.  Click "File"

3.  Site Manager

4.  In the Site Manager Window:

  • Click "New Site"

  • Give the Site a name

  • Where is says "Site Details", enter the following:
    a)  Host
    b)  Leave it as "FTP"
    c)  Logontype = "Normal"
    d)  User: This is where you enter the user ID you were given
    e)  Password:  This is where you enter the password you were given
    f)  Save password is optional.  It's a good idea to check the box so you don't have to keep adding it in each time.
    g)  Comments. No need to add anything here.
    h)  Click "Save and Exit"

Go back to "File" and click "Site Manager"
Left click on the site name
Click "Connect"

You will connect to the website.

Remote Site = The website you have connected to.

If it is your website you have connected to, you have access to all levels of the web and can upload to the root folder, or pick another folder to upload to, by double clicking on the desired folder.

If you have been given an FTP account to someone's web, then you will probably be connected directly to the folder that you have access to. So you shouldn't have to click on any folders.  You can however create sub folders within the folder you were given by right clicking and picking "Create Directory" and making a new folder and naming it.  Then you can either upload to the root folder you were given, or double click on a folder you created and upload to that folder.

Local Site = your computer

You use the "local computer" area to browse to the location of your file.

Below "Local Site" you will see a list of the files that are in the folder you have accessed.

Locate the desired file or folder.

Right click and pick "Upload".

The file will upload to whatever directory you have showing in the right pane.

The link will be:

http://www.websitename.com/yourdirectorfile name.zip

If you have created a sub folder, the link will be:

http://www.websitename.com/yourdirector/newfoldername/file name.zip

Or the pesron can just access the web and download from your folder :)

Just for info/completeness (as I suspect you'll be happier with a GUI client), Windows does have a command line FTP client which you can run by typing ftp either into the "Run..." box or at the command prompt.

Neyjour ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2008 at 8:52 PM

Is that where I type in the FTP addy I was given?

nruddock, I don't understand what you're talking about.  Could you elaborate please?

I'm still stuck on the "site details" part.  In the "Host" box, is that where I put in the FTP addy I was given?

Okay, I've browsed to the folder that contains the zip file I want to send, but it's not showing up in the list.  Can you not send zip files via FTP?

No problem!  :)

I think I did something wrong.  A window just popped up saying "Target file already exists".

That means that there is a file in that directoy with the same name as the one you are trying to upload.

You can either overwrite the file (not recommended unless you really mean to do that ). Or change the name of the file and upload it using the new name.

You can right click on the file showing in the local host area (the files on your computer) and change the name.  Or you can change the name of the file on your computer and then browse to it again within the FTP program.

I'm totally confused....there's no way they could already have a file with this name, so...???  Did I somehow select this file to upload to my own computer, or something like that?

Can you take a screenshot of the program when it's open with your file showing on the left and the directoy you are trying to upload to on the right?

Ok. You are trying to upload the "Bahamas_StockP" zip file right?

If you look on the right side in the window there you will see that there is already a file there with that name.

Now it's possible that you started the transfer and stopped it and are now trying to upload it again. In which case just pick "Over write"

However, if that isn't your file on the right side... then you should rename the file that you have showing on the left, to something else.  Add (1) to the end of it or something.  And then right click it and pick "Upload".

That is quite a large file so it will take some time to upload. You will see the progress of it uploading in the bottom pane.

Microsoft Internet Explorer will actually do ftp in a browser window. Just type the host address in the address line , like ftp:anysite.com  and you will get the file list up in the browser window . Drag and dop , or copy paste your file in the browser window and your done .

An ftp client is much nicer though .

Neyjour ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2008 at 11:30 PM

Thanks markschum.  :)  I might have to give that a try...

Acadia, I'm still getting the same message.  I reconnected, selected the zip file and chose to "Overwrite".  The upload started, but when it got to about 9% that message popped up again.  It's like I'm stuck in some endless loop.

Will try renaming the file, but I don't know if it's going to work.  I have a feeling something's wrong....

Neyjour ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2008 at 11:44 PM

Well, I renamed the file and started all over again.  At 7% of the upload, I got the message again that the target file already exists.  sigh

Looking up at the top though, it says...
Status: file transfer sucessful

And at the bottom it says...
Successful transfers (1)

But that can't be right, can it?  It's a 30MB file.  There's no way it could have uploaded in less than 2 minutes, right?

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2008 at 12:23 AM

Probably not.

You can see the file sizes of the file you are uploading and the file size of the uploaded ones. If they don't match, it's not uploaded.

It could be that you are being disconneced from the server or something. I don't know. I've never had that problem before.

You can try a differen FTP client and see if you have more success. Let me dig another one up for you.

You can try one of these. Unfortunately I haven't used either of them, so I can't help you with it.  Entering the information should be relatively the same though.

http://www.wise-ftp.com/download.htm

My only other suggestion is to contact whoever set up the FTP account for you and have them tell you what program they use.  It's possible that their server is finicky.

I've sent an email asking them to check if it was uploaded.  Will wait to see what they say, but I suspect it didn't go through.  If it didn't, I'll try those other programs, etc.

Acadia, thank you VERY much for your help!  hugs  You're so kind.  😄

I use filezilla at work all the time, I have found it does have some funny turns, mainly to do with the information sending. Looking at your screenshot and at Acadia instructions you are doing the right thing, but maybe this problem is not related to the software.

Looking at your screenshot you are trying to send a directory with about 60MB of information, could  it be possible that the server you are sendin this to has a cap on the bandwidth?
I am guessing this because you have a file in your target server called ".ftpquota".
A lot of hosting companies though they have a large storage space, do put a limit on the amount of bandwidth used.

If this is the case you may have to send this information in pieces. So you just need to copy the directory structure on your target directory and copy the files separately.

Might be a good idea contacting them, or looking over their hosting info if they are any details about this. Probbly somewhere in the small print... ;¬)

Sound like your FTP is disconnecting then reconnecting during the upload. I have had this happen with other programs. There should be a setting in the program about timeouts and resume uploads. Usually they would be int the server settings. I would provide a screen shot but  unfortunately they took my ftp ability away from me here at work.
As for using Windows explorer or any browser for that matter I have found they are better for downloading and not uploading specially large files. Another thing that it might be that the host you are trying to upload to only allows uploads to a certain size.

As an alternative, you could upload the file to somewhere like 4shared and give your correspondent the link to download from. Nobody else will know where it is if you keep your account private, and you can delete it again once you hear that they've got it.

Very, very good point! I used to have the problem with my old host, but 1and1 Internet doesn't have a cap and gives me more bandwidth per month than I'll use in my entire lifetime. So I've become spoiled and completely forgot about the upload cap that some sites have.

EnglishBob does have an excellent idea :)  You might want to his way as it's the most simple solution.
