Subject: OT Safari Bundle with I -Tunes update

nyguy ( ) posted Mon, 24 March 2008 at 12:15 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 5:40 AM

I am miffed at Apple for doing this! My wife was using my system as I was fixing her laptop and she saw an update and went and installed it. I fixed her laptop and went to open a link for an email and Safari opened. WTF - I never installed it before why is it on my system and as default browser?
It took me close to 45 minutes to get it uninstalled with help of an apple tech, boy did she get an earful of words I rarely use with my son sitting 5 feet away watching Dora. It would not have been so bad if the uninstaller worked properly. The issue I had was when I clicked on link it would look for Safari and not FireFox, while FireFox was set as default browser.

See I use I-tunes for my I-pod and would have just installed the I-tunes update but not safari.

This is certainly very naughty of them.

gets worse.
try uninstalling Itunes.
there's 'Ipodhelper' and other services left running that keep calling up the update.
I've even got a extra 'PC' on my network called "IPOD" that I'm working on tracking down.

I got that today.  I dismissed it.  After the problems people noted with the latest iTunes on Windows (7.6), I have been just continually dismissing the Apple Updates of late.  Heck, iTunes works and QuickTime works - if it ain't... (you know the rest).

Why would I want Safari on Windows?  I don't use Safari on MacOS.  Hint: I use Firefox on both - always will and, er, always will.

When Steve tries to add 'Finder' to windows, I'll be looking for the 'Never ask me again, ever, damn you!' switch.  I don't like Finder at all.  I don't much like Explorer either.  Another Hint: I use DirectoryOpus (oh, for a MacOS version of this!).

Rant: In these days of spam, viruses, spyware, rootkits, dosa, hackers, crackers, and other nasty things on the internet, nobody should ever just click 'OK' away on anything without thorough investigation.  My god, have we not learned our lessons yet?  Do people still click on links in emails promising money from Nigerian banks?  Eeks! ;)

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

Err, you know you can un-check the boxes next to the stuff you don't want before downloading the iTunes update, right?

(and unlike Microsoft, it's not labeled a "critical" or "security" update ;) )

/P

yes I do, the Wife did'nt.

want to offer any tips on getting rid of the Ipod services she now has? (AFTER removing Itunes!)

or the annoying 'update' notices we get every week? (or how to turn OFF those notices? - we don't want anything but QT - and thats only cos I have a program that needs it)

or what IPOD is doing on my network with it's own IP Address? (no, there's no one else on the network. this not on the Wireless ethier. )

annoyed? yes.

reinstall Windows? (okay, okay - Computer Management -> Services, and hunt down/kill any iPod-related stuff there. Then go to Add/Remove Software and ditch any iPod stuff there. Then, you may have to take a trip through regedt32 for a bit...) I only use iTunes on the Mac (where removal is a drag and drop affair). Amarok works just fine for the iPod on my Linux boxes... dunno offhand if they have a Windows version of Amarok or not. > Quote - or the annoying 'update' notices we get every week? When it pops up next, go to the Tools menu - you can kill it in there. /P

thanks. trying that... but apple have buried shit all over the place and it's not easy to find. eg the Ipod crap.

as to replacing itunes with something else, nope. did'nt want itunes in the first place... it's only the fact the wife installed it on her machine thats causing the problem and annoyance and she only installed it because the update has it prechecked and she was half asleep.

gets me, and I know your going to disagree, with the installing prechecked, drivers that won't die, hijacking behaviour, quote 'The issue I had was when I clicked on link it would look for Safari and not FireFox, while FireFox was set as default browser.' .. we normally call shit like this 'adware or spyware' ...

nice.
