Subject: How to make Poser load faster?

_______________________________________________________ Hi all, I'm still using Poser6 and over time it's taking longer to load. Any tips to speed up loading? Cheers, Gerald. _______________________________________________________

Usually, if I remove all the external runtimes, my Poser 6 will load in a snap.

I also turn off everything that I don't need for Poser such as Weatherbug, any Instant Messengers, but I do tend to leave my antivirus on because I trust almost nothing these days to be free from hard drive killers.

The larger your runtime the longer it will take Poser to start up.

If you have one runtime, then it must be huge. If you have several external runtimes, then each runtime is smaller, so Poser will start up quicker if the last runtime that was used is small.

Nothing personal Acadia, I consider you a friend you know that, but I get fed up seeing this one come up all the time, it's an inaccurate statement!!
I have one runtime which is huge set up in sub folders and each week it gets bigger and each week my start up time NEVER gets longer and in fact since going to 64 bit, it's quicker than before.
Start up time depends on a lot more than runtime size, any number of things could cause it to slow down including Viruses, trojans and not defragging often enough!!

The "fact" that defragmentation speeds up your computer is a myth - modern hard disks and file systems try to avoid defragmentation, or defragment themselves. You probably have other problems.

Too many purchased items for Vicky is the biggest killer for Poser startup time!
So I've heard anyway.

*Funny that, and there's me using a state of the art Vista Ultimate 64 machine that defrags itself to a set time period!!
No slow downs here!!

I have a gazillion external runtimes, and I notice a huge difference with poser's load time depending on the runtime that I have last used before exiting Poser.

My V3 clothing runtime is huge, and if I exit Poser after having used that runtime, I notice that Poser takes longer to load the next time I open it. Compare that with my lights runtime which is quite small.  When I exit Poser with the lights runtime being the active runtime upon exit, when I next open Poser it opens almost instantly.

I do believe that there is some truth to the size of the runtime linked to Poser upon start up.

Well I guess we'll disagree Acadia [LOL]

My own thought is that it depends on many things, I've seen a big improvement since I went to 64 bit and loads of RAM for instance, my own single runtime is 50+Gig and it takes no time to load!!

In my case, with my older computer, creating multiple runtimes cut initial poser open from some 4-5 minutes to under a minute - without doing anything else to the computer. I didn't time it, so I dunno if it's 20 sec or 40 sec, but it's within tolerable time.

With one runtime loaded with several gigs of content, It used to be I'd fire up poser, go fix a sandwich or change a load of laundry, come back, check on it, go back to empty the dishwasher, come back and it's almost loaded.

What Fixer is talking about can also affect things, but in my experience, not as much as keeping lean multiple runtimes.

Yes, a brand new and much faster computer helps too - but I doubt that it's a solution the OP was interested in.

I note that if the last linked Runtime when I closed P7 is my 22+ gig  P5 Runtime, Poser takes longer to load the next launch than if it last closed linked to my smaller (10 gig) P7 Runtime.

I also recall the tip about closing Poser with just a one-item Runtime linked and Poser is supposed to open up lightning fast, but I don't know because I never tried that.

The problem with poser, at sturtup it loads ALL thumbs (png's) in the last runtime. You can cahnage this by editing the Poser.ini. The 2nd last entry is LIB_POPUP_TIMEOUT 100. If you change it to 10 or 20 you will see a big increase of loading time. An other way is to create a very small runtime with only a few items and ALWAYS change to this before you close Poser.

As usual: All changes on your own risk, on my PC's it works but to be honest, I like small runtimes and now Im going to devide the one for V4 to V4 and A4.

I do too, but sometimes there is no avoiding a larger one. I already V3 and V4 divided up into 2 runtimes each. One for clothing and one for character addons.

However, I have a props folder and last night despite my highly organized structure, I just couldn't find what I was looking for because there is just so much in it. So I think this weekend I'm going to divide it up into "props" and make another runtime for "buildings" which will include such things as gazebos, rooms, indoor settings etc.   I already have one for "backgrounds" which has become muddied with scenes. My background runtime was supposed to be a place to keep my background images as well as Cyclorama and Infinity Cove things. So I definitely have some house keeping to do for those 2 runtimes.

;) I'm a little big over 50 Runtimes, e. g there is one only for food Items, one is only for Sara Native Indian and so on. Clothing items are devided into general, men, Teens, women, V3, V4, Anime.

ok... i loaded Poser 6 with my normal P6 runtime 3.2 gig..fairly small. it took 35 seconds to load...not bad
i created a runtime called startup...i opened it then closed Poser.
Loaded poser...it took 9 seconds to load this small basically 0 runtime.

I too , from experience with multiple runtimes and huge runtimes have extremely sloww loads when I have my huge runtime active. this little test proves it, imo

edited to say...guess what, I'm closing Poser with that o runtime from now on, When I click on my P6 runtime in the library, it opens in a couple of seconds.

You can force Poser to always load from a designated runtime by setting the libraryprefs.xml file to read-only. But you can't add runtimes while running Poser in that case.
Swticthing runtimes is tedious in P6 and P5: you always have to go up the library tree, up to the root, before you can change runtimes. P7 and Poser Pro handle this better, there's a dropdown that allows you to switch runtimes, no matter where you are in the library.
Most of my libraries were built when I was using P5, so most of my items reside in one big runtime (40 Gb), with a few extra runtimes for development projects.
Now that I use P7 and PPro, I make more use of external runtimes, but I haven't gotten around to the task of rebuilding the library structures.
I'm not looking forward to that task. Yes, I have all the installers, but I have shifted stuff around so much that the current runtime doesn't look like the installer content at all. Furthermore, I use a lot of freebies, many of them older ones, that had their geometries in the wrong place, textures right in the library folders, broken thumbnails. I fixed all those problems a long time ago, but I didn't fix the installers.... So I guess I'm sort of stuck to that big P5 runtime.

As for switching to an empty runtime, I'm considering writing a little resident application that monitors the libraryPrefs.xml file. If it has been changed and Poser is NOT running, it changes the "current library" to the designated startup runtime.
Nice little .NET project, I guess.

Wow folks!.. You've certainly given something to work on.. I've defraged using Perfect Disk, and will try a small runtime. I've looked inside Poser.ini but don't seem to have LIB_POPUP_TIMEOUT. Cheers, Gerald.

For what it's worth...  Poser Pro opens fast, searches my single 20+GB runtime fast and just plain is fast!!  My system sucks and only have 1.5GB of ram and an Athlon 2500+ cpu and Poser Pro is by far the fastest Poser yet for me!!  Have all versions since P4!!  Now rendering glitches (textures and trans map issues) abound but I did get Poser Pro to render in MAX so for me the speed is well worth it!

I never saw any mention of seeing the preferences.
If you are loading a character up with Poser this will also slow it's startup way down.
If you delete teh default person and set that as your preference it will speed it up more then any of the other suggestions.

That's been added with the latest Poser 7 SR, but the original question was for Poser 6, so that doesn't apply here. And there are no PNGs loaded, Poser just needs to crawl all subdirectories so it can display the library drop down.

Nice little .NET project, I guess.

Would be easier to just start up that program, it parses the library_prefs.xml and then starts Poser...

This tweak was originated for Flightsim 2004 on an average speed computer with Win XP. I received it from a friend who got it in some PC magazine. It should work for Poser as well, but I have not tried it yet.

Flightsim may take from 45 to 3 minutes to start on a computer, depending on the speed.

Take the following steps:

  1. Convert to NTFS if you are on FAT 32 file system.
  2. Disable last file access stamping:
In the command prompt type:  FSUTIL BEHAVIOR SET DISABLELASTACCESS 1
To convert back:  FSUTIL BEHAVIOR SET DISABLELASTACCESS 0

    Reboot computer.

  1. Increase file system cache:
        Perform the following:
Go to Control panel / System / Advanced / Settings / Advanced / Memory usage
Change from programs to System cache.

    Reboot computer.

Load Flightsim 2004 and exit when completely loaded.

Wait for all disk activity to stop.

    Reload Flightsim 2004.

    IT LOADS IN SECONDS.

My system was Pentium II
1 GB Ram
128 MB RAM Display
40 GB HDD IDE

It changed from 2 minutes loading to 35 seconds.

I take no responsibility for what this teak may cause on other computers. It appears that the system loads some files in the cache and thereafter everything loads faster. Flightsim is also loading slower as the installed contents increased.

Johan

Hello All,

I've been seeing a lot of comments about mutiple RUNTIMES or external RUNTIMES.....how would this work? Could it be explained for someone with minimal computer knowledge, or is their maybe a tutorial somewhere on how to do this??

Thanks for any Help

lindans ( ) posted Tue, 10 June 2008 at 8:45 AM

ArcPaladin here is a quick rundown on how I have set up my additional runtimes. Create folders wherever you wish to save them e.g. in my documents or on an external hardrive I have several runtime/folders and I have named them accordingly:-

  • RX V4 – V4 stuff
  • RX V3 – V3 stuff
  • RX M3 – M3 stuff
  • RX Building Props
  • RX Plant props
  • RX People Props
  • RX Hair – all hair
  • RX All Poses – all poses and so on

It is up to you what you call them and what goes in them. Once you have created the folders start up Poser go to your main runtime and at the bottom of the menu list is a plus sign (Add Runtime) click on this and browse to where you have saved your runtime folders add each runtime you have created. When you buy content and you wish to install stuff, simply point the zip file and or installer to the Runtime in which you want the items to live. I usually install the main characters i.e. V4.2 M3, Aiko, David etc. and all their morphs into the default Poser Runtime, but everything else props, hair, clothes etc, goes into it’s own respective runtime... I hope this helps

I'm sorry it's something you find rant worthy but it is a fact. I have over 20 different runtimes and Poser loads faster if the last runtime I accessed is a small one versus a large one. IE: If I close it when the last runtime is the default runtime where I don't install anything, next time I open it it's lighteneing fast. If however, I close Poser while it's accessing the DAZ runtime or my Sci-Fi Runtime, both of which are HUGE, it can take a couple minutes for Poser to open. So Yes Matilda, Size does matter.
