Subject: OT - Transcript of recent on-line chat with Internet Provider

Klebnor ( ) posted Fri, 09 September 2011 at 1:06 PM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 9:11 AM

I wanted to investigate changing Internet/Cable provider and as soon as I hit the website a livechat box opened.  I figured, why not, and clicked.  This is what transpired.

BTW, the livechat box had rightclick copy disabled, but ctrl-c / ctrl-v still worked fine.

You can't make this stuff up:

A V**** Service Representative will be with you shortly. Thank you. (15:24:36)**

Grace(15:30:19): Would you be intersted in recording feature for your TVs?

You(15:30:57): I unchecked phone, and now it says no internet plans are eligible for bundle savings.

Grace(15:31:37): Please do not see that it is for the people ordering triple bundle.

You(15:32:12): Too late, I've already seen it. Wow, back to B*house.

You(15:39:35): Why does V**** offer SD converters on an all fiber network?**

You(15:41:05): OK, but you can see where that leaves me thinking the "special offer" isn't for me as I have to leave part of it on the table, right?

"You(15:35:18): Bangalore or Mexico City?"

...exactly! :)

BTW - it's an easy guess as to which ISP. They tried to pull the same stunt with me out here awhile back, too. I kept trying to tell the (actual human being at the kiosk) that I have and prefer using Vonage for my phone, and that it has had a perfect service record for me at an awesome price... therefore I did not want their phone service.

Turns out the price for TV+Internet minus phone on "V" was ungodly expensive, even when compared to Comcast (go figure).

...a year later the same ISP you spoke to sold the whole wad to Frontier, and left Oregon entirely. I'd since moved to a new apartment that doesn't have "***S" service, so I hadn't bothered to check and see if the prices haven't come down from their original confiscatory rates.

If you google them, you'll see that the "free dvr for life" offer is backfiring a bit - they only offer it to new accounts so existing customers who continue to pay monthly for their dvr are predictably upset.

I'm still on the fence.

And here I thought that out-sourcing nonsense was an Oz exclusive. Call me ridiculous, but I really think that the whole outsourcing/globalising greedy-business mindset just may have something to do with the state of the economy. I'm not saying it's a huge part, but I can't see sending jobs no one wants to do overseas, then paying people to be on the dole to be beneficial for any country's economy, somehow.

But that's just me: I see things through very narrow-scope glasses.

Sort of makes you wonder if the person on the other end is listening at all, or has even seen their employer's web site.

I can't tell you how many conversations go: I've already tried A,B,C, and D. They didn't work.Ok, let's try A, and see if that works... sigh

Our phone company recently merged with another, and the V****** is an integral part of all their new bundles. I thought, gee, I despise C** cable, so let's just bundle TV, internet, and both phones, and get a cool new Incredible while we're at it, and save money! Yeah, well, can't find the phone plans anywhere online, so I called.... and nearly choked to death when I heard my first month's bill would be almost $600. No free anything. No free installation of dish, no free receiver/DVR, no free wireless modem or USB connector, but internet would be only $20 a month.... for DSL... And I never did figure out if I'd be paying more or less than I do now. How come communications companies can flat out lie about how much you're signing a contract for?

They can blame the "misunderstanding" on the less-than-proficent English skills of their Globalized customer servicve.

Can we really be sure we're not actually talking/chatting to Web Bots?  Might be one of those 'intelligent' computers ;).

Nah, 'intelligent' computers would speak better English.  They still wouldn't understand what you're trying to say, but their grammar would be good.

I don't think that was a person on the other side of the char. Bad artificial intelligence I think. But programmed by someone whose grammar was not so good.

Actually I'd rather talk to one of them than some call centres. Computers can understand logical arguements :)

I'm pretty sure it was a live person, particularly where one of my posts came through and she reacted immediately.  She started to say "please uncheck, but then my earlier response came through, and she plowed on.  Also, I don't think anyone would put together a computer script that said "please do not see that" or "may be you will be liking them".  If so, they did a great job of making it appear human.

I think "Grace" was working off a script and received prompts based on my text.  You can see her "assistance" looped back trying to get me back on track.

It was pretty funny in retrospect.
