Subject: Applying Shader and material presets.

Are there any good tutorials for Daz Studio 4.6 in applying Shaders and material presets?

I tried applying the "Chrome" Shader preset and got a rendered object that looks like plastic.

I want to get a shiny metallic effect.

Was there anything in the scene for the chrome to reflect? Were you rendering using 3Delight?

Even though chrome means color ( Greek χρώμα) it is not a color but reflection of environment.

Any reflective object will not have proper appearance if nothing to reflect.
Shaders are easy enough to apply, not requiring a tutorial I think.
What you need is direction on physics of light to find what shaders require

Ahhh!  Thank you.  I should have known better.  For regular metal shaders does the environment matter?  I got the same plastiC look with that also.

In poser I can get a good shiny metal with no texture maps and do it entirely with material settings.

i can't seem to do that in DS.  I tried all the dials  without success.  Poser does not require an environment to get the metallic look I wanted.

Some of the shaders in Poser are not physically correct, but use an internal reflection map to simulate a reflective appearance without reflecting the actual environment.

You can do the same inaccurate reflection in DS by adding a reflection map in the relection color slot

Adding a reflection map is simple but not accurate. In example there is sphere with reflection map that does not match enviroment.  It's reflecting some place not present in scene

Lighting is a big big factor, so ensure you have (enough) lighting and experiment with the angles. Make sure you also have something else in the scene that can be reflected in the sphere. You shouldn't need to do much else in DAZ Studio, although you could tweak the glossy, reflection and lighting model setting (in surfaces tab) (best set to plastic - I know that sounds wrong but believe me you get good reflective materials with that, rather than mettalic without them looking plastic).
