Ok, I need some opinions. I did a contest entry over at Syyd Ravens Runtime DNA. Yeah Yeah...It's not Bryce I know, but I trust all of you and I know the way you evaluate artwork. It's Poser and PhotoImpact. Thanks ICM

Looks good. Only thing I noticed would probably wreck the image. More specularity to the skin and brigher raygun lights. Truth is, I like it the way it is.

ttops ( ) posted Sat, 16 November 2002 at 12:01 AM

Nice image. Shouldnt the thumb on the hand holding the pistol; be placed on the other side of the gun to hold it? Just a suggestion.

Zhann ( ) posted Sat, 16 November 2002 at 1:10 AM

ttops, I think she's(?) firing towards the back of the vehicle in which case the thumb is in the right position...I guess I'd like some harder edges, this is a fire fight, things get scorched, etc, everything looks so "clean". BTW, don't you know you're not suppose to cross plasma streams? (chuckle) =)

Zhann, What I was trying to say is that the right hand thumb holding the gun should be on left-hand side of the object. I don't understand what you mean by "towards the back of the vehicle..." pointing the gun in different directions should not affect the way you hold it.

ttops ( ) posted Sat, 16 November 2002 at 1:57 AM

OK. just took a closer look at the image the hand in question is the LEFT hand. Sorry all.

chohole ( ) posted Sat, 16 November 2002 at 2:02 AM

Good image, although I tend to agree with Eric that the raygun beams need a little something to brighten them somehow, but have absolutely no idea how you would do it.

I agree with Zhann, it's all too clean. You could have added some splotches and scorchmarks and stuff. The problem with the thumb is that the hand is too brightly lit and it looks like it's painted on a plane. I had to look twice to see that it's left hand and that the thumb is in the right position. And the grip is a bit off. You don't take hold of your gun with just the tops of your fingers. BTW, I assume that the off-centre frame is intentional.

The reason the gun hand looks "off", in my opinion, is that the stripes on the gun handle match the finger lines too closely and the result is that they look like part of a glove rather than part of the gun. I had to look three or four times to figure it out myself. That whole effect originally made me think the arm was badly tweaked. I'd try something different on the handle...maybe loose the lines. I might also try "cocking" the trigger finger out a bit more than the other three. Love the image though...it has that airbrushed feel that I just can't seem to get.

bikermouse ( ) posted Sat, 16 November 2002 at 4:31 AM

Because the back of the ray cannon is so bright it seems to me that this throws the rest of the picture off. Other than that it looks fine to me.

tuttle ( ) posted Sat, 16 November 2002 at 5:41 AM

Nice image, quite dramatic. There's a strange blur on the lamp that is a bit odd and the laser beams look severely underpowered. Also, yes, the hand looks wrong even though it isn't. It's because the guy looks like he's facing front. Getting rid of the Poser "wrinkles" around the neck would help solve this.

BlueArdor ( ) posted Sat, 16 November 2002 at 5:43 AM

Hmmm.. the non driver seems to have too much of a cutsie pose. It's a laser battle... I'd think she'd be more braced for balance and impact! Asesome pict as-is too!

big_hoovie ( ) posted Sat, 16 November 2002 at 7:54 AM

here's my 2 cents: you don't really need scorch marks, although they would make a nice addition, perhaps some texture to the body of the vehicle, to make it feel like it's actually there. also, I agree with the bit about the hand. the thumb should be around the grip of the gun, rather than in front of it. something else I just noticed, is I think the drivers hand, that's holding the gun is actually the wrong hand. if you hold your hand it the same position, the palm of your hand should be facing forwards, not back. outside of that, it's a great image(better than I could have accomplished, I must say)

tjohn ( ) posted Sat, 16 November 2002 at 1:28 PM

My opinion on the hand: The only thing I see wrong is that the fingers should curl more around the handle of the gun. It appears that the gun is being held only by the thumb and tips of the fingers. I just think the shooter should grip the gun more tightly. The angle of the hand and arm are fine to my eye. I can get the same basic pose on my own arm and hand without strain.

And maybe a little area light to make it more obvious which direction the vehicle (and driver) is facing.

I agree that the hand looks off because of the grip on the pistol. Though, while we are talking hand, I think the index finger should be slightly extended for the trigger. That leads me to the confusion I get from the image. After studying it more closely, the driver is not shooting at the aircraft at all, but a different target altogether. The laser looks headed for the aircraft, but her eyes don't, and her arm appears to be bending backward, but it can't be. I think that if she has to be shooting at something, it should be in another direction altogether because it would be less confusing. Plus, it would eliminate where her laser crosses the muzzle flash from the other gun. That's another confusing part. I also get confused with the light on the car. I don't like the way it blends with the big gun, I get confused about what it's a part of. Maybe if it were tilted a little outward to show the back of the big gun it would eliminate that, maybe depth of field, I'm not sure. I would also like to see a motion blur on the background instead of a gaussian. I think it would reinforce the forward motion considerably. The scaffold should be treated very carefully. As it is now, it appears to be travelling at the same rate as the car, and that just can't be. I realize we are watching it break, but I'm not sure how to better show it... maybe more blur on the ends and less on the middle, I don't know. Also, more blur on the wheels and tire tread would help with the motion. The action in the scene is very present, and there is an intensity you've created with this conflict. That comes through very clearly. I also like very well the cold, industrial color scheme. Especially because the people contrast it so well. And also the orange jumpsuit is a great color choice for the same reasons. The organic leaps out of the industrial, and it's really nice. And I suppose I should say that the frame is very cool, though I don't think you were looking for a crit of the frame. :) I think it's a really strong image, and I'd love to see where you take it from here.

Zhann ( ) posted Sun, 17 November 2002 at 5:02 AM

big hoovie, you're sitting in your car,(left side driver), you reach out the window with your left arm pointing back towards the rear of the car firing a pistol, her hand is in the right postion, they are driving off the left hand side of your screen, the guy in the back of the vechicle is also the facing back... and yes the finger tips should be closer to the thumb tip, and the grip needs a different texture so as not to be mistaken for a glove,...my two bits, now I'll go sit in the corner =p

I actually put myself in the same position as the driver in the image, just to see, and MY hand has the palm towards what would be the front of the picture. also, that means that my fingers wrap around the back side(the side of the gun you cant see), and the thumb around the front. perhaps my hand doesn't work the same as everyone elses. I don't know, I think I'm getting off this soap box, before someone kicks me off it.

ICM kicks the soap box, but big_hoovie moved just in time. ;) Thank you all for the responses. Although this is already a posted entry, I may go back and tweak some things later for personal preference, but you all know how that works(40 renders later) I try to improve as render-time goes on. #1 I'm not used to just poser and post work to create an entire enviroment. The backdrop is a photo from a cd and no way to increase the res. Lighting is a trick too, since whatever i use outside of poser has as semi global effect(2D space)next time I'll layer them in. #2 Mike is in the front seat(I can barley see his eyes-guess my gamma is set pretty low) he is reaching backward and overhead, consider hes driving and its fast and bumpy(like me on my cell). Vic is in the back shooting,Yeah I couldn't decide wether to have her sitting or kneeling,(I'll try her sitting for a more stable ride,no freakin seatbelts though!LOL) #3 Aha!, The infamous illusionary gun. :) Yes from a glance it's difficult to see which is which with the hand and the gun.*see pic* I could try to reposition the fingers a bit and then try a different tex on the gun. OK imagine this, you just went swimming, your shorts are wet, you hold your left hand out the window(american side of the road :)) while driving, as your arm gets tired the wind pulls it up and back.(I've lost more shorts that way) Thanks all I appreciate your input. ICM

ICMgraphics ( ) posted Sun, 17 November 2002 at 8:29 AM

I meant to say you hold the Shorts in your left hand.

I read the last post before reading the previous one. Got a great laugh from trying to figure out what it meant before reading the post it was clarifying.

ICM, I just looked at the pic and I think it's great. For my 2 cents with Vicki, I would consider giving her a special seat to sit in, even just a back brace. Here's why: in any fast moving vehicle (even at 15mph) if you are not firmly attached to something you will slide when the vehicle turns. I don't see how she could aim at all if she's slipping around. Just show her bracing herself with her feet and her back.
