Subject: Is there any kind of Dragon that hasn't been done yet?

ScottA ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 7:34 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 4:46 PM

I've always toyed with the idea of making a free Poser dragon. But people were always selling them so I decided not to do that until Dragons got all marketted out. Is there any kind of Dragon that hasn't been created yet that people are wanting? Or doesn't it really matter? ScottA

Valandar ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 7:37 PM

Something very comic would be nice. Big belly, very posable face. I like the idea of a dragon crossed with a human. A dragon morph and prop set for Mike and V3 would be nice.

Den Beauvais Dragons are superb. The DAZ Sea Serpent was modeled after one of his creations.

How's about a Jabberwocky? Lewis Carrol would be proud. :)

William ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 9:58 PM

I'd second a mechanical dragon, either victorian tech style or modern robotic type(s).

TygerCub ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 10:09 PM

Oh yes, please! Might we see a Jabberwocky?

A Mech. dragon sounds interesting. Haven't heard that request before. My Mecha-Godzilla is back in the shop being upgraded. And it would require a very similar modeling technique. It would be a big file though because mech. meshes need a lot of edges. Probably between 8-12 meg. Depending on how detailed it is.

quesswho ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 10:26 PM

I emailed Daz when it was still Zygote to do a seadragon. Have yet to see one but I bet we will now that there is a thread. :)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 10:30 PM

A delicate fire-lizard-type dragon (almost all the dragons available are too chunky and tank-link to fly). A Victorian mechanical dragon which blows steam and has riveted plates, gears, bellow-styled wings,... the works. An ice dragon with crystalline features. Please note: the wings MUST be substantial enough at the base where they connect to the body. Massive bodies and massive wings with pitiful connections look awful. Fingers coming out of elbows look awful, too, so when you do the bones in the wings THINK about the anatomy (the Millenium Dragon has oodles of morphs, but there is nothing I can do to fix those wings). The one dragon I've really been wishing for is Micheal Whelans take on Anne Mcafferty's "dragons of Pern" All smooth and leathery, aerodynamic obviously built for flying. Lot's of facial expression and those really cool eyes. Also a dragon scaled to be tiny, about a foot long. Delicate. Jon

Valandar ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 11:28 PM

No can do a Pernese dragon. See, MacAffrey is strident about suing ANYONE that dares use her works, whether in fanfiction, fanart, or even filks. She sees such things as "sullying" her work. Heck, if a dragon ANYWHERE is described as having multifaceted eyes or gem-like eyes, she sues. And hauksdottir, there's an integral problem with Poser that prevents dragons from having good, strong connections at the torso... the wider the wing connection, the less room for the chest and abdomen bends. Y'see, it's that whole durn "illegitamate parents" thing going on with those wings... Oh, well...

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 3:16 AM

Valander, Filk? McAffrey used to approve of filk. If you have the "Storyteller" songbook (companion to the tape), I did most of the internal illustrations. That was almost 20 years ago, so she may have changed her mind in the interval. 🤷 There are better dragons. Carolly of Dragonkeep

How 'bout Quetzquotl (sp?) the Aztec/Mexican feathered serpent? No wings, feathered mane around head and along spine....Not strictly a dragon, but certainly in the genre.

heyas; there are so many dragon variations, it's impossible to do them all! don't worry about it, scott. :)

xoconostle ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 9:26 AM

Ah, gee, Rosemaryr, you beat me to it! For what it's worth his name is spelled Quetzalcoatl. By the time of the Conquest he was usually depicted as having rainbow-colored feathers along the entire serpentine body. However, he was appropriated by the Triple Alliance Aztecs, and was depicted in various ways by several Mexican cultures prior to their empire. If I recall correctly he was originally an actual (Mayan?) man, an honored warrior who became the plumed serpent god in legend and religion after his death. Anyway, he'd make a spectacular model. It would also be nice to see more Asian dragons.

EsnRedshirt ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 9:57 AM

Valander, I'm betting a carefully boned and modelled dragon can have those beefy wing connections you say are impossible. Sounds more like a challenge to me ;) Frankly, I'd love to see a good, high quality, free dragon of any sort.

bikermouse ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 3:13 PM

All, There are at least four representations of Quetzalcoatl at different times in Toltec history. As depicted on the Mexican Flag, Quetzalcoatl, is neither feathered nor flaming. The Eagle represents the Toltec God Tej. The cactus at the bottom of their flag represents the struggle of the Aztecs to build a country in the desert aided by the Cactus Mescal (and later the Toltecs). There is definately a story there, but it is for tha Aztecs to tell for it is their story. It should be told right. In the Jewish Religion from which Christianity and thus the western world gets many of their myths, a dragon was supposed to be bad luck or bad fortune - that and the Legend of King George is I suppose where the Idea that dragons are Evil or otherwise bad news comes from. Enuma Elish . . . it's an old enough story that most have forgotten, (and no copyright issues that I know of) ... Tiamat was a goddess who had many of the attributes of a Dragon . . . might be interesting . . . Still no one has mentioned Grendal . . . Beyond here there be Dragons, - TJ

Valandar ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 4:29 PM

The way Grendel was described, what little description there was, he seemed far too humanoid to be a dragon. However, the description of his mother, what there was, seemed to fit the draconic mold. I tend to picture Grendel himself as a reptillian, trollish humanoid, with a dragon's bloodline flowing in his veins.

Valandar ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 4:36 PM

Oh and while we're on the subject of mythological dragons... why not: Ladon, the dragon that guarded the tree with the golden apples of the Hesperides. Niddhog, the dragon that gnawed on the roots of Yggdrasil Linnorms - Norse styled muscular, serpentine dragons with only two forelegs, no wings or rear legs, and tremendous size (Fafnir was a Linnorm) Wyrm - A Celtic dragon type, almost always serpentine with an exceptionally intricate head, covered in horns, plates, and antlers. The number of legs seemed to be almost arbitrary, as did the presence or not of wings. Note that my use of Linnorm and Wyrm is arbitrary - it's how I label them in my mind.

Rosemaryr ( ) posted Sun, 12 January 2003 at 2:05 AM

Well, I've always had a fondness for Quetzalcoatl (..Thanks for the spelling, xoconostle!) because it's indeed just barely within the realms of real biology, considering the relationship of reptiles to birds. Archaeopteryx being the fossil that springs to mind. Who knows what remnant population survived up to human habitation times in the jungles of South and Central America? Certainly, it wouldn't violate any known rules of biological patterns on Earth--such as six-limbed (ie. winged plus four legged) dragons....unless they are of insect origin??? hmmmmm.... there's a thought!

Here is a National Geographic story about flying snakes and how its done. And who said snakes cant fly .

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sun, 12 January 2003 at 6:49 AM

That is twue-ly remarkable! From a memory of little flying serpents undulating between treetops, ancient orientals may have developed the mythology of bigger flying dragons undulating through clouds. Carolly
