Subject: Is Michael slowly dying?

What do you think? Everybody is crazy for V3. But to be honest, I think her Male-Morphs aren't too realistic. I still prefer good old Michael. But it seems, that most developer are only workin' on Victoria-Stuff. It would be sad, if only one character would survive. Cheers Oliver

steveshanks ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 3:40 AM

I agree with you and am still doing Mike stuff ;o)...Steve

Kelderek ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 3:50 AM

DAZ are working on a Michael 3, once he is released we will probably see an increase in Michael-related stuff. Especially if he, like Victoria 3, is based on a new mesh. Developers always tend to focus on recently released products, for obvious reasons.

bernieloehn ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 4:35 AM

Well, I've also got these V3 male morphs but they are really only morphs and from my point of view don't look very male. So I use old mikey and look forward to M3. Hopefully he will be a real guy and hopefully we will be able to use all the old mike stuff - specially that made by steve - on M3. Bernie

Bernie, I am willing to bet quite a bit that M3 will NOT be able to use any of the "old" mike stuff. Just as V3 can't wear V1/2's clothes without tweaking/hassle.

No, Michael is NOT dead. Thip and renapd have created some fantastic outfits for him and can be found in various stores on various sites. PoserWorld also has outstanding clothing for him and ISOP offered the CasaBlanca suit just last month for free. :-)

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

ernyoka1: I am afraid you are right. My Victoria 3 is not muched used because lack of clothes...

RawArt ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 5:50 AM

Mike Lives! I enjoy working with him ...and am currently working on 3 new characters for him, soon he will be seen in ways he has not before :)

oliveramberg ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 5:52 AM

I love to work with him as well and I developed two characterpaks for him. It just feels sometimes like the whole Poser-World is turning around Victoria.

Riddokun ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 6:22 AM

well a friend of mine told me about vicky 3 that is stil impressive but he thinks that there is a great lack of polygons/flexibility in hips/abdomen joints compared to ever vicky2.. did everyone else notice ? and yes it i sad that, becaue vicky 3 has male morphs the old michael was dumped into void !

OReillyTX ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 8:00 AM

I hope DAZ does NOT abandon the Michael line. I was rather worried when V3 got the gender bender morphs. ACK ! Please DAZ dont give up on Mike! Yes the poser community does seem to revolve around Vicky. Vicky has WAY more stuff than even Barbi.

pdxjims ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 8:42 AM

First, the female figures have always been more popular. This doesn't mean that there isn't a large group of us who use Mike. It's a little depressing that there seems to be 3 or 4 items available for V3 to every 1 for Mike. Second, V3 is new, and does require a complete new set of props and clothing for fit. A lot of modelers are spending most of their time quickly filling the gap to the exclusion of Mike. Third, since Daz has announced M3 is in the works, I bet a lot of modelers are waiting for him, rather than make something for M2. V2 sales slumped when V3 came out, and they don't want to be caught the same way with M3. Fourth, since V3 has male morphs, modelers can do cross-gender stuff and just include male morphs and feel like they're supplying enough of a male line. Fifth, there's a saturation point we've reached on V2 and M2 in the way of product variation. How many Mike goatee textures do we really want or need? There are only so many non-morphing cloths we can use. Once more loin-cloth and I'll puke. All of this is understandable. However, since there is no release date for M3, and rumor has it that M3 is still on the drawing board, I think they're missing out. We'll have M2 for at least a few months. What I'd like to see for Mike is clothing that has variation to it. Things that can be posed in different ways, or is different from whats already out there. I'd love to see a t-shirt with a morph to pull the waist behind the neck (hot summer day look), or a pair of Y-fronts with some good morphs. Low rise, adjustable pants would be nice too. Real baggy pants with boxers sticking out on top. I finally got to the point where to get what I wanted, I had to make it myself. I've just made some fetish clothing available in freestuff that doesn't really look like anything I've seen for Mike (although there seems to be a LOT of it for V2 and V3 available in the last couple of weeks). The one thing we can be sure of is that Daz will come out with an M3, but maybe not until Daz Studio comes out. The good folks at Daz have always kept their promises. If they take their time, and make the same kind of improvements that went into V3, it'll be well worth the wait. Maybe we should do a wish list for M3 to help them along.

rockets ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 8:45 AM

In my opinion the reason most people don't make images with Michael is because for whatever reason, people don't like to VIEW images of him. I've made several using only the Mike character and they don't get nearly the views or comments that Vicki images get. I have to say that recently there does seem to be more looks and comments than in the past. Also for me at least, it's not as much fun putting Michael in scenes...I don't know why. :-)

I just finished a pic using Mike and V3. To me V3 looks more masculine, but I won't give up Mike Just yet.

JohnRender ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 9:01 AM

Wait, there's a MALE Poser character? Really? And you say he's named "Mike"? Interesting. Nah, I think you're pulling our leg. I don't believe that this mythical "male" character really exists. I looked through a few pages of the gallery and only saw nude women.

IMO, v3 with the male morphs looks much more realistic than Mike. Yes, Mike looks masculine, but very few "real" men are built that way. Just look at wolf's example above; how many men have muscles bulging out of their neck and chest like that? And I can always tell a Mike figure, now matter how it's been changed. You can never really hide the boobs (er, pecs), you cant' give him a real-looking paunch or make him flabby without tons of work.

No. Michael still lives in my gallery :-P I find that using Michael is more of a challenge. The challenge of getting the image to really be something that a Vicky cannot do. There is just as much beauty in male renders as female renders. Most however, still prefer to look at female pictures. That is fine. But Michael is certainly not dead. I am, however, halting getting anymore textures for him and wait for M3 to be out. Also clothes. It would be very very very much appreciated if vendors can release M3 versions or updates of their textures and clothes as it would be a shame to waste what is already out there.

Tomsde ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 11:23 AM

I don't even own Victoria, I use Micheal for most of my pictures. I wouldn't get overly bent out of shape about V3's male morphs, I just think they were aiming at creating another type of male character. Let's not forget that Micheal 2 has Stephanie as a mesh derrivative and Daz didn't stop making Victoria when Stephy was released. There are entire websites that are devoted to Micheal pictures, they're out there! I think Micheal is alive and well and here to stay.

CryptoPooka ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 11:24 AM

I dunno, some of my Mike images have far more comments made than some of my Vickys. I've managed to beat both of them into something close to submission so they usually do what I need em too. And after a lot of hunting and collecting, I have to say that Mike does have a pretty good wardrobe. You just have to do a little work to find the treasures.

Marque ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 11:43 AM

I love the Michael model, and only use the V3 male for younger males. Mike 3 is going to be awesome but I imagine I will still use Mike 2 for a lot of things, just as I do now. Marque

Chailynne ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 12:33 PM

I look at almost every Mike picture I spot, but I don't comment often. My problem with him is he just has to many muscles. That's not the type of guy I prefer. The V3 morphs are a little better but geeze, stop with the muscles already. The majority of people don't work out at the gym 4 days a week. LOL

Patricia ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 12:33 PM

Love Michael :) But he has his inherent difficulties. Getting his body to look 'elderly lean' as opposed to 'studmuffin lean' was a trial when I did him as a powerful Wizard. Those puffy shoulders just don't want to deflate without distortion.....

JoeyAristophanes ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 12:53 PM

Chail, the majority of real women don't have perfect boobs or perfect makeup either, but that sure doesn't stop anyone in the V crowd. :)

Stormrage ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 1:16 PM

Wow, Creations, that is a wonderful portrait. I'm really enjoying the work you and Patricia are doing with older characters. I am so tired of the bland beauties. Excellent.

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 2:09 PM

Personally, I use Mike more than any other figure, but when it comes to the gallery, I've found that my images are more likely to be viewed if Steph or Vicki are in the thumbnail.

xoconostle ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 2:16 PM

Creations, excellent portrait. That's the rare example of a Mike pic where it isn't obviously Mike. Love ya, Vicky, but LONG LIVE MIKE!

Thanks, I just love Mike. Poserstyle did some very good clothing for him and also Poserworld keeps Mike in honor. Cath Harders did amazing textures and images for/with Mike. This Mike Claus I did last year :-)) drank loads of punch.

A friend of mine once commented that Micheal always looks like Micheal, but with the right texture map and facial morphs that's not the case as shown above. A lot of people just use the Micheal face that came out of the box, but I like to work on the faces.

hmatienzo ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 4:34 PM

As long as V3 can't do Syyd's Gabriel or Daio's Raven and Sabre, I am sticking to Mike...

BTW if you want see "real men" with an utramasculine appearence watch the ulimate fighting championships or hell even pro wresting or pro football. those V3 "males" Look like soft girly men to me but to each his own.

Great to see that Michael is still alive in this community. Here's one of my favourite character that I built. Cheers Oliver

Jackson ( ) posted Sat, 12 April 2003 at 7:47 AM

Wolf: I was not attacking your ideal male, I was strictly speaking of realism. IMO, it's much easier to make the v3 male look like a "normal" male, not the "ideal" male. Also, it's easier to make him (her?) look like different people. Like I said, to me Mike always looks like Mike. BTW, I don't often use the "supermodel-ultra-beautiful- giant-breasted-vicky look either. I like "normalcy" and variety in characters. Just like the real world I think.

Tomsde ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 8:22 PM

If people think Micheal is too perfect they could try working with Don that came with Poser 5, he's far less perfect. My gripe has always been that there aren't enough pictures with heavy people in them. Micheal has convincing "fat" morphs. I think the average american male has a bit more pounch to him than is usually portrayed in the art work I see. The native poser people don't morph fat well. In fantasy art I think we're all striving towards more ideal forms, I can't fault Micheal for living up to our ideals. Frankly I don't like the V3 male much, but that is my taste, those of you who are getting a lot of mileage out of him more power to you.
