Subject: Translation of TOS?

svdl ( ) posted Sun, 19 September 2004 at 8:34 PM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 10:37 PM

Many of the community members are not very proficient in English, and have problems understanding the TOS. More than once I have IMed an artist that had uploaded an image that could be considered a violation, which they wouldn't have done if they had understood.
I think a translation of the TOS into French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese would help prevent uploads of unintentional TOS violations. Can this be implemented in the next site overhaul?

Sounds like a good idea, I've been to several sites that have their TOS in different languages..

It is in German and French already but I'm surprised it isn't in Spanish as well and Japanese would make sense too. By the way when did Freedom become French again in the US? As in Freedom fries etc. I always thought it would be cool to be able to speak Freedom :)

Yes, translate them into Spanish and Japanese if possible. But clients rarely read the TOS, so it wouldn't make any difference.

JenX ( ) posted Mon, 20 September 2004 at 7:50 AM

ah, but having the TOS in their native language gives the user/customer no excuse not to follow it, and no reason to feign innocence. If it's not in their native language, they won't read or understand it, so they can always use the "but, your TOS is not in my language, how was I to know?" bit...not all members/customers would do that, mind you, it's just that, well, there IS a mindset out there that will, sadly.

As stated above, we already have the TOS translated in German and French - we will work on getting the translations to other languages :) Dee-Marie

LillianH ( ) posted Mon, 20 September 2004 at 8:36 AM

Thank you for the suggestion. While we do have the TOS in French and German, it would be very helpful to also have it available in Spanish, Italian and Japanese. It's something we will be working on. Best wishes, LillianH

Why should renderosity be saddled with the expense of that?

I think that if someone wants to read an english site, they should learn english first. Or provide their own translation software. This is like those individuals who think they should immigrate to a nation, and expect everyone else in that nation to ignore their own native tongue, in favor of making accomodation for them and speaking the visitors tongue instead. Sorry its wrong to go somewhere and expect that.

Good point BDC. Perhaps after the formality of the presidential election and george is put back where he belongs, his next task will be the war on "forin" speakers, get rid of all that gibberish and get the whole world to speak Ahmericane.

Mark_uk ( ) posted Mon, 20 September 2004 at 12:01 PM

Oh and as you consider speaking English correctly to be of importance, you may wish to know that there are two spelling errors, one wrong word and six grammatical errors in your short reply.

BDC, you're wrong. Renderosity is a worldwide community that happens to have its hardware and administration located in the US. Your kind of attitude is exactly the reason why so many people hate the US.

Unfortunately "worldwide" and "community" are two words that are not recognised by some.

rowan_crisp ( ) posted Mon, 20 September 2004 at 1:17 PM

If I spoke better Spanish I would aid in the translation; however, I only speak soccer spanglish - which isn't suitable for polite company. ;)

Renderosity is not only a community, it's a business on the internet that serves a world-wide market. Having the TOS translated multilingually is a smart business move and should be viewed as such, frankly.

If I were Renderosity, I wouldn't want people to be relying on a translator engine's output when it came to legal matters - have you ever actually had something translated by Alta Vista? I have, and the results weren't pretty - but they were pretty funny.

"I think that if someone wants to read an english site, they should learn english first." Do you know the rule "click and see what happens"?, or maybe you, learn Japanese before going to any Japanese site? I suggest French sites, their language is much easier to learn.

No renderosity is in fact not a world wide community. Its based in nashville tenessee. Wich last time I checked is still within the UNITED STATES. Add to that, the recognized language for business and aviation the world wide, is english.

Secondly, I did not say speak english 100% correctly, I simply said speak the language of the nation you visit.

I know some dont grasp this concept though, and think that everyone else should cow-tow to them simply because they do not speak the language of the nation they chose to visit. But thats not the way it is, or should be for that matter. Again IF I go to France, I learn French, I get a english-french dictionary, or find or hire someone to interpret for me, I dont go there and demand paris change all the roadsigns.

Oh and for kawecki,

IF I visit a non english site, WHAT I DO, is use translation programs. Wich if one bothers too utilize them, windows will give you for free. WHAT I DO NOT DO HOWEVER is, sit and whine, and contact the site admins and demand that they also make the site available in English, simply because I dont speak french and dont choose to learn too speak french. P.S. Since it is ok for some to demand that the site be made available in different languages, I guess it's ok, and will be "considered" if I demand the site be made available in the native american people's languages as well. After all, we should be able to see the site in our native tongues too, if it is going to be done for everyone else. Bet we will see THAT one happen real soon too won't we now. (sarcasm)

renderosity is in fact not a world wide community Because everything on the Internet is viewable by people all over the world, Renderosity is a world-wide community. It may be BASED in the United States, but it does have members from around the world ... and that, in my mind, makes it a worldwide community.

rowan_crisp ( ) posted Wed, 22 September 2004 at 12:41 AM

sigh I think you missed precisely what was meant by "worldwide community". It doesn't mean that there are R'osity servers all over the world. It means that it caters to artists all over the world. This isn't a matter of kowtowwing to anyone. It's a matter of not leaving LEGAL ISSUES to a translation engine, which are variable in quality and limited in vocabulary. I didn't hear anyone whining. I heard someone pointing out something that makes good business sense. Frankly? If there was a demand, I'd be one of the first to push for native language translations. But I've seen nary a one. I'm resisting the urge to be insulting. Feel free to extend the courtesy to those of us who disagree with you. :)

Hmm. I wonder what BDCs native language is, since he clearly does not understand what has been asked for. A translation of the complete site would be ridiculous indeed, I'd never ask for that and I would argue against it if it were asked. A translation of only a very small part, that could help keep members out of trouble, that is what this thread is about. Like Zhann says, many sites have their TOS in different major languages, and the rest of the site is in a single language (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, whatever). Just sound business sense. Thanks admins for working on this, it's appreciated!

Renderosity IS a world wide Community.
We have members from 180 countries and we value these members very much!

The company is based in the USA.

We understand that a lot of our members do not speak English and will work towards making the TOS available in as many languages as we can.

Thanks for the fantastic suggestion.

I could do the Dutch translation. But I think a Dutch translation wouldn't be very important, since there are not many Dutch/Belgian members (maybe two dozen) and most Dutch speaking people can read English well enough to understand the TOS (all Dutch and Belgians are required to learn English in school!). Better concentrate on the major language groups like Spanish/Portuguese, Italian and Japanese. Maybe Chinese and Russian too.

As far as I know, Chinese has many, many different spoken dialects, but only very few written forms. I think Cantonese and Mandarin will cover most of the ground.

most Dutch speaking people can read English well enough to understand the TOS In two holidays motorcycling around Holland around the 1980's, it was my experience that people in Holland tended to know only the English for things that are part of their job. For example, a customs officer knew English when checking me on entry at Europoort hear Rotterdam, but he did not understand me when I asked him in English for where I could buy petrol. Then I for the first time spoke Dutch in Holland; "Waar te kopen benzine?". The spoken language can be different, but the Kanji characters can be understand by Koreans and Japaneses too. The modern Korean writing system (called Hangeul) is completely different from Chinese-type characters.

svdl ( ) posted Tue, 28 September 2004 at 7:46 AM

Anthony, I agree about spoken English. I know quite a few people who read English at the academic level, but hardly speak it. Reading a foreign language (passive use, non-realtime) is far easier than writing (active use, non-realtime), and writing is far easier than speaking (realtime). Every Dutch inhabitant younger than, say 55, has learned to read English at school (but many hardly ever read English after they finish school...)
