But what does the traceroute have to do with HTTP URL access?? A tracert of CGTalk.com (try it) always times out at jump 15/16 for me. Yet, CGTalk.com is very responsive. I think it is unrelated.

Takes me 22 hops to get here. The boards aren't too bad for me right now, but it's midnight and they are usually a bit more speedy at this time of night than during the day or evening for me. This is a current trace, but I don't think it's reflective of the times when I have problems getting in here too.

"... A utility that traces a packet from your computer to an Internet host, showing how many hops the packet requires to reach the host and how long each hop takes. If you're visiting a Web site and pages are appearing slowly, you can use traceroute to figure out where the longest delays are occurring." You may have to increase the timeout value. CGtalk times out for me on hop 14 BTW. The more likely cause is a firewall. A quick search reveals that some firewalls block the ICMP packets that (Windows) tracert uses so that even if your http goes through, tracert won't reach it. In that case, tracert won't help. With Renderosity, it's not being blocked so you can get a complete trace. Unix tracert uses UDP packets by default but those may also be blocked at the firewall. There is a version of tracert that use TCP/IP and may get by the block but I only see it available for Linux.

You can also get a Windows tracert--faster and more convenient than the commandline version and with a nice graph as well. Not as nice as the one with the world map that shows your packets zipping around the planet but it's free.

kuroyume0161 ( ) posted Mon, 13 June 2005 at 3:36 AM

Now, the tracert thing is interesting, but it really doesn't resolve the problem. And why is it so isolated to Renderosity for many of us. As I've said, I frequent dozens of sites and hit many hundreds during Google searches (mainly for research of one type or another). This is the worst site that I've encountered. If it were actually the Dallas or Atlanta hubs, then we would all need to have a little discussion with them about the inefficiency of their servers. ;)

I come into Rosity several times a day, every day. I've seen no slowdown in the last month or two of any significance. Okay, every now and then a page (e.g. when I click on one of these threads) will load only after a little while or need to be 'reminded'. But generally Rosity works as well as any other site in the US for me. And I'm in Sweden. :] Fish

JohnRickardJR ( ) posted Mon, 13 June 2005 at 6:14 AM

Just to add another complication, this site always works fast for me at home (ADSL, probably somewhere around 1mbps - offically 750, dialup says 2 meg, performace can be anywhere between), but is always slow at work (200mbps cable). The vast majority of sites are much quicker for me at work. This isn't a recent thing , but seems to be a feature of renderosity. No other sites play up like this Tracert is hitting timeouts at my end, so perhaps the network settings are causing problems with Rendo?

"And why is it so isolated to Renderosity for many of us." And why is it working fine for others (Poser 5/6 deja vu)? If anything, it seems a tad faster for me, perhaps because so many high speed users are being shut out. I'm no Net Tech so I don't know the answer. People are going to be taking different paths and hit different routers. Acadia is hitting p6-0-0.RAR1 in Atlanta. I hit p6-0-0.RAR2. I have no idea how that's determined, 1st come 1st served, by location or maybe even by dialup vs. DSL/Cable. We're all hitting the same IP address here but it may be different physical hardware. Something's obviously damaged or misconfigured somewhere but it could be here or on some comsat in geosynchronous orbit over Alaska for all I know. Is anyone on dialup experiencing severe slowdown or is it only DSL/Cable users? Have the admins given no response? Have you been neglecting your monthly NVIATWAS tribute renders to Vicky?

Im in the UK and have never had issues with Renderosity, sounds strange that people in the US are having trouble, Could it be Geep that you need to change cable provider? or is this an issue with cable? (as i don't surf like many here with cable)... Hope you don't decide to stay away from Rosity Geep, as you will be missed, and probably the most missed. If you do decide to take your wisdom and humour elsewhere i think we all need a post here so we can all visit you. Cheers and all the best Geep on all you do.

Hmmm ... well, if this adds any more clues, I'm tossing it out here ... Runtime DNA is hosted by Bondware, I believe, and its server should be in the same vicinity as the Renderosity servers (it traces nearly the same, with the exception of the last hit). But I'm not seeing the same lags on the RDNA pages ... in fact, it's almost "Bing, bang, boom!" So ... all you smart IP folks ... what would that point to? Bandwidth issues?

xantor ( ) posted Mon, 13 June 2005 at 11:25 AM

Runtime dna doesn`t have nearly as many people at the site at any one time.

DCArt ( ) posted Mon, 13 June 2005 at 11:28 AM

Right, so it really doesn't have to do with it getting bogged down in the trace route ... it seems to be a bandwidth issue.

lmckenzie ( ) posted Mon, 13 June 2005 at 12:17 PM

My ? would be why with everyone sharing the same bandwidth are only some getting clobbered with multi-minute page loads? No real mention of a particular time either bandwidth should vary at least somewhat at different times. Also if this just started a few weeks ago, did they suddenly lose a couple of servers or a T3 or suddenly get a few thousand new members. Certainly not sayin' it ain't so just wondering.

Heck, I've gotton so frustrated about the slowness lately that I was just thinking the same thing Dr. Geep expressed. Right now I'm trying Safari just to see if there's any difference between that and IE, my normal browser. It's so annoying!

Yeah......if 9/10th's of the people browsing Renderosity at any given time would just go away: then we'd probably see a site speed increase.

Not to mention the fact that Rendo would have site traffic levels equivalent to most other Poser sites.

Wouldn't that be wonderful?

hmmmmm...I'm from the Uk and have a 2 meg cable line, I sometimes experience extreme slowness and somtimes time out but this only happens on rosity....by the way I use IE..I was thinking of switching to Firefox and also my service provider is NTL. Please geep stay awhile longer to see if it gets sorted out.

DCArt ( ) posted Mon, 13 June 2005 at 2:07 PM

Yeah......if 9/10th's of the people browsing Renderosity at any given time would just go away: then we'd probably see a site speed increase. LOL Well the point of my bringing up that comparison wasn't to tell people to go away. It was to compare the trace routes and to distinguish that the problem appears to lie with bandwidth capacities rather than it getting hung up somewhere along the path. It looks like basically what it amounts too is "We need more power, captain!" (said in best Scotty imitation voice)

I shudder to think what this place's actual monthly bandwidth consumption is.

Providing enough power to achieve Warp 25 might help.

But it's not an issue that concerns me a great deal.
