Subject: OT: Renderosity often hard to connect to-why?

7/8'sIrish ( ) posted Thu, 08 December 2005 at 3:48 AM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 2:55 PM

I have found it frustrating lately connecting here- it takes me several times to get in, is there something I can do to fix this? I am on mozilla

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 08 December 2005 at 4:03 AM

It's not your browser, it's the site. I had a bunch of errors a few minutes ago too. And some message about too many connections.

The site is very slow....I just assumed the Internet was frozen. ;) Really it just may be that Renderosity suffers from being too popular. I do think, like Acadia, that it's not anything on your side of things when so many of us have the same problem.

MushroomMan ( ) posted Thu, 08 December 2005 at 6:34 AM

I've found that the best way to get in is to go through a link from an e-mail (like one that says that someone has replied to a message on the forums) --MushroomMan

They need better software.

nickedshield ( ) posted Thu, 08 December 2005 at 9:52 AM

Sometimes it's not renderosity nor your end. There could be a bottleneck somewhere along the line. Two of the worst I have run across are XO Communications and Beyound bent.

I must remember to remember what it was I had to remember.

Ardiva ( ) posted Thu, 08 December 2005 at 10:11 AM

Sadly, that doesn't work for me any better, MushroomMan. :(

[Unlurk] I've discontinued checking the Renderosity forums for the past two weeks (and will continue in that respect). Too long to connect, too long to get to forums, too long to see messages, and posts (probably this one too) always require that I either 'Read new messages' or similar action to actually get the page update. nickedshield - This makes little sense. The 'bottleneck' is specifically Renderosity. As I complained in the Cinema 4D forums, I can get my mail, check out all of my other regular web haunts (including several other forums) while waiting for a forum or message here to display. If this is a general bottleneck, it would affect most or at least some of the other sites being visited. But, alasses, it is only Renderosity as slow as winter molasses. Can it be that Renderosity is more likely to go through one of these two nodes than any other site? Possibly, but it still doesn't seem like the correct answer. Popularity? CGTalk is far more congested and yet I have many fewer problems. And they're basically a 'Free' forum - i.e.: not a front for a store. [Relurk]

The site is definitely slow. Slower than a sloth on mogadon. Slower than a comatose snail in cold treacle. Slower than a big bag of extremely slow things. Slower than... you get the picture. Rumour has it that it will soon be fixed. Whether that means fixed in the "repaired" sense or fixed in the "taking the cat to the vet" sense, I don't know.

Marketplace right now. SQL Query Error: MySQL server has gone away. Fortunately wasn't buying but what would happen to anyone that was ?

I hope they find a way to fix this site soon. I have been frustated daily by R'osity's downright perversity when trying to change pages, or get in the site, or even use the search function, for weeks. I'm relieved to find it's not my fault. This is the only site I have such problems with, by the way. I've been a member here for several years, and I'm getting less and less inclined to spend time here because of the problems of just completing normal tasks. If I feel discouraged, how must a newbie who has a question or needs help or wants an opinion feel?

SamTherapy ( ) posted Thu, 08 December 2005 at 2:36 PM

Judging by what just happened to the whole site, I'd say the "cat" option is the one. :D

Well, from my experience with issues with RO it might be a while before any changes are made. I brought up the "sessionID" in the URL things months ago, yet it still happens.. If you happen to share a link to a product you know someone would like, and the sessionID is in the URL.. they will often get logged in as you. Which means they have access to your account and downloads. Not too serious if you send a link to a friend.. but if you accidentally post it on a forum such as this? Hmmm.. Regardless.. I guess what I am getting at is: don't hold your breath. "We're working on it" could mean a number of things here... but actually working on it to fix it? I doubt it. :-(

I got some weird one saying "SQL Lock wait timed out" or something like that. Never got that before.

I too have noticed a slowdown in 'rosity respose over the last few days.

Personally I suspect it is due to the database look-up.
Although they have (IIRC) recently updated the servers (exactly how I don't know), even if they have a distributed database it won't always respond quickly if a lot of users are trying to access the same part of the database at the same time ('cos it's all on the same part of the distributed system).

"MySQL has gone away" is a definite clue to this sort of problem. "SQL" = "Simple Query Language" and is the de-facto standard for database access.

Sometimes that comes up; other times it doesn't (but all that means is that the SQL engine is managing to trickle out tiny bits of response at a time.... fast enough to prevent the time-out coming into effect, slow enough to get you eating the carpet as a boredom diversion)...

Cheers,
Diolma
Edited to add: Today, 'Rosity has been commendably fast (with 2982 users online)! (Just goes to show.. you never can tell..) But credit where credit's due:-))

Renderosity will be migrated to Bondware 3.0 - eventually. It's planned for this year, according to the interview with Tim Choate. I don't expect any fixes to the current code. Not worth the effort, it's going to be phased out in a few months. I hope Bondware 3.0 is programmed better than the current software. The database glitches we're suffering are a sure sign of lousy programming (but redoing it right takes quite a lot of effort), and if the new software is any good at all, the site will be much, much faster and more reliable. We'll see.

Went to the "be careful of what you ask for" thread via the link above. After having read it, I was prompted to post the following in that thread ('cos I felt it relevant): ---------------- "and yet, somehow other websites manage to host better forum software and still run acceptably fast" <-- (quote from an earlier post) Not knocking the poster of this comment, but just pointing out: Those other sites. How many of them have a regular number of users in the realms of 2000-3000 on a daily basis. That's a lot for a database server to keep up with... (a quick look just showed me 2420 surfers ... a few mins ago it was 2800+..) It needs top-rate, up-to-the-minute software to cope with that sort of demand, and that doesn't come cheap. And 'rosity is free....... So, if you REALLY want better performance from 'rosity, go buy lots'n'lots from the marketplace. 'Cos that's the only way they make any money to afford upgrades..:-)) Just my 2p worth (that'll not help much tho) ---------------------------- (End of slightly edited insert.) Copied it here, 'cos I still think it's relevant. 'Rosity is NOT a charity. It does NOT exist to shower us all with freebies and advice at lightspeed. It's a business. And it's a business that is sometimes a victim of its own success. So when it is slow, just roll with it, and when it is fast, ROCK :-)) Cheers, Diolma

Disagree. CGTalk is free. Go there now - 201,000+ members, 1833 users online - no slowdown whatsoever. I've seen Rendeo slow with 1200, fast with 2900. This is just B.S.! Rendo is free, but they make a smidgeon profit from 50% of every sale in the MP.

ongoing discussion about page times at link (and for those that can't get there due to slow server responses:) " thanks to a little addon for Firefox, we can now get accurate page loading speeds for a website.. so.. Ebay.com : 0.160s Freefall (webcomic) : 0.219s BBC News : 1.234s POserforums : 1.320s Caligari Forums : 1.453s DAZ Forums : 2.656s Amazon.com : 5.532s then we have... Renderosity : 11.610 (change to Poser forum) Renderosity : 11.470s (opening new post page in Community center) ....oops. " Addtional: " latest times. I've gone to 80(!) seconds now. " throughout today it's ranged from 2.000 to 120+ thats with user numbers rangin from 1900 to the current 2549 - user numbers have no bearing on page loading times at all. it has been at 2000 users while taking 110 seconds to load a page. then at 2500 users and only 2 seconds. tracert times remain constant to the server at 56-75ms through out. anyone want to guess why this is so random? the only thing I can think of is the database is so fragmented it's cracking up...

And, usually when you say something about how slow this site is, an admin will wag a finger in your face and give the company answer, "They are aware of the problem and are working on it." Been getting that answer now for over a year. I enjoy being treated as if I'm gullible and stupid.

-Wolfie- ( ) posted Fri, 09 December 2005 at 8:51 AM

Chuck Evans... Couldn't have said it better myself! ;-) I too have expercienced that.. See my previous post:

Diolma "Those other sites. How many of them have a regular number of users in the realms of 2000-3000 on a daily basis. That's a lot for a database server to keep up with... (a quick look just showed me 2420 surfers ... a few mins ago it was 2800+..)" Ok, that is understood.. but they are not resolving these issues because?!?!.... hmmm...

I mean geez... Even my little piddly server at home, that has been running for over 4 years non stop (with the excepting to power outages) which hosts my website, is also my IMAP email server which myself (and my hubby) are connected to right now as I type this, is my FTP server...etc etc.. has a faster connect time. Good grief!

Bigger doesn't always mean better apparently. sigh

I'll spend the RO cough downtime shopping at PP. May not be "as big" as RO, but at least their site runs 99.9% of the time.

Would be nice if all this could actually result in something getting done for real. I mean it's not like RO doesn't have the cash flow to support the upgrades needed. If it doesn't.. then.. huh? what?! What happened to the 50%??

in my example of page times you'll find BBC News, Ebay and Amazon. I think they have slightly higher usage numbers than here ;)

erm no. rendo HAS a big(ish) budget. look at the amount sold by them, all with a 50% cut. with the latest cuts, they probably actually have more than the BBC to spend on the website. (the BBC have just had to cut a major portion of their online presence) rendo has been online now for over 6 years. not having this worked out by now is not "trying to do it's best". it's something that should have been fixed 5 years ago. I notice that ppl keep - in error - linking the number of pages open, (that number up there is not users - it counts pages open), with response times. well. I've seen the number there be at 1000 with a response time in minutes, yet seen it at 2800 with a response time in seconds. anyone want to explain the disparity? speaking as an ex-network engineer, the fact the times are random in nature points to the site having some major ongoing and growing problems. this of course is my opinion, but the software here is more than showing it's age.. it's falling over slowly. don't get me wrong, I like the site (mostly), but being told that "we're aware of the problem and we're working on it" for 5 years + actually feels more like "please shut up and go away"

"in my example of page times you'll find BBC News, Ebay and Amazon. I think they have slightly higher usage numbers than here"

I agree. They're also all examples of BIG companies with BIG budgets. Which allows them to employ lots of people with lots of experience, buy the latest hardware and software, and have the clout to get stuff upgraded when it doesn't work properly.

'Rosity isn't in that league, so those examples are not fair comparisons. Plus the fact that those sites don't have to maintain a rather large data-base for every individual member (except for some very specific stuff). 'Rosity has decided to let us "mark all read" for each separate forum. Which means a data-base search every time you change forums, so that it knows which threads to display. Not true for the BBC News (can't say for e-bay/Amazon).... And - ever tried watching BBC news videos at peak time (around 9-10 PM UK local time)? 3 secs of video, 10 secs of "downloading", 3 secs of video, 10 secs of... (and I'm on broadband)..

As for the others, I don't know.

My basic feeling is just that 'Rosity is TRYING to do it's best, but can't always hack it.

So when it's slow I sit back and swear under my breath and/or switch to doing something different for a while, but I don't complain about it, 'cos I LIKE the site.

Sorry if I got anyones hackles raised.

Cheers,
Diolma

I totally agree with Khai here. And I brought up the 50% with good reason. For one, one of the biggest sellers on Ro is Awful Soul (that I know of). Most of their stuff goes for over $20 a pop, and it STILL sells like hot cakes. So, even if they only sell 10 of their $20 items in ONE day, that is $200 a day, $100 of which goes to RO. Now multiply that by.. oh.. a month... You do the math. I'm not wasting my time.. Gawd already knows I wasted enough waiting for this forum to refresh, and I am sure I'll have to wait yet again once I hit the "Post Reply" button. 'nuff said. ~Wolfie~
