What kind of snow do you want? Snowdrifts, snow on windowsills, snow falling from the sky?

mejed ( ) posted Sat, 10 December 2005 at 7:59 PM

snow falling from the sky.

I just made a couple of textures:

http://ia300106.us.archive.org/1/items/Snow_4/snow.jpg

http://ia300142.us.archive.org/2/items/Globby_snow/snowblur.jpg

One is globbier-looking than the other.

Use the high-res square (Poser 6 primitives). Turn it 90 degrees, so it faces the camera. Then attach one of the textures to both the diffuse node and the transparency node.

Image is how it should be hooked up in the material room.

There are a few in the market place, this one is quite nice looking. Also, there are some snow things in the free stuff here. Search "Snow". I saw one for "Vue", maybe you can convert it to work with Poser.

Thanks! Here it is in use. No postwork.

Scale the square until it's big enough to cover the whole scene, and make sure you set the specular node to zero and "cast shadows" off for the square.

I'm sure a real texturist could do better. A seamless texture would be great, because then you could tile the pattern if you wanted smaller flakes.

I live in Montana and so I have a rough idea what snow looks like.

But hey, that is REALLY COOL confetti.

I have no idea if this works or not. LOL I tried to mimic what Leigh did and made a 1200x1200 square, and added snow over black. If anyone wants to try using it, feel free.

That's great! Tiles well, and it's sparse enough that you can layer it. Image has two squares, one with your texture full size, one with it tiled at 50%.

I think Gimp can use PhotoShop PlugIns and assuming you've mastered starting one up then that's pretty much all you need to know. This free Snowflake plug in gives you total control over adding snow (confetti, etc.) to your image. You can set size, opacity, color, amount etc. Quick and easy to use.

Just to throw in my two cents, here's one with Acadia's jpg done in Poser 4. I didn't spend a lot of time on it (yet) but I think it does the trick. Thanks!

  1. Get dummies-level modelling metasquoia lite version (free) 2. Use Blob function and select copy mode - make an nice clump of fallen snow to suit your taste 3. Export as DXF 4. Import the DXF into your poser scene, apply material settings as you think fit (pink snow ?) 4. Arrange onto your scene, add or make more fallen snow props in metasequoia and import as per above.

anxcon ( ) posted Sun, 11 December 2005 at 12:20 AM

just a random thought, skip the texture map, use a noise node you can easily set how "dense" snow is by changing values i use the same setup for making stary background in my pics ofcourse i add a bit more, considering its space :) but anyways, noise node, the snow would vary in size/density

randym77 ( ) posted Sun, 11 December 2005 at 5:55 AM

Can you post a screenshot of your material settings for that? I tried it, but couldn't get it to work right.

anxcon ( ) posted Sun, 11 December 2005 at 1:02 PM

file_310977.jpg

oops =) noise node is set here to make random -20 to 1, thus cutting out nearly 95% of the "snowflakes" 0 to 1 would have, changing min value to lower (like -100) would make the snow even less dense, or higher (up to 0) makes snow more dense but its outputting values below 0, and transparency doesnt like that :) need math node to cut everything off below 0.0 value, then it works right add other nodes like fbm, turbulence, marble, etc you can add different effects to the snow, some areas denser, etc

anxcon ( ) posted Sun, 11 December 2005 at 1:12 PM

ok this site is on its last breath -_- pic didnt post? noise node, max 1, min -20 put into value1 of a math node (not color), value1 1, value2 0 feed that into transperency value, set to 1, and tada!

um anyways cheap fast pic of above material on a square in front of james using granite instead of noise might work too i have a habbit of hating texture maps, unless alpha maps easier to tweak what i want :)

Acadia ( ) posted Mon, 12 December 2005 at 12:38 AM

Martial, that looks great! Operaguy, with snow comes cold weather.... doubt you would be able to handle temperatures of -54 degrees Farenheit for weeks at a time, which is what we were getting last winter. We've had snow for about a month now, and there is plenty more coming before April.

I can't find pictures of the results of a storm we had here in 1986. But here is a link to some good examples.

Our city was shut down for almost 3 days and people were using snow mobiles down major streets. It took my friend and I a whole day to dig away the snow that was blocking the front door. The snow drift was up to the top and over the front of the house. We were literally trapped inside our house.

We had to remove the storm window from the door and started digging away the snow using a plastic pail and plastic kids shovel. After a whole day we managed to clear enough snow so that we could climb through the window and start clearing it off the landing and sidewalk. It took us 4 days, and finally the guy across the street came by with his scoop shovel to finish it. When it was all said and done, our lawn had snow piles that were over 6 feet tall on either side of the sidewalk. And the snow wasn't completely melted until June.

Here is a good example of what we typically get here in an average winter. With major storms like the 1986 one, there is way more snow than that.

Acadia..and all.... you want to see some snow? Check out the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan ..Houghton and Keweenaw counties. That's where I'm from... Average 200+ inches of the white stuff per yearin many towns up there I can remember walking in the woods in July with wnow still on the north slopes. there is already 72 inches this winter with 19inches on the ground. Here is a picture of the snow thermometer ..78-79 was a good year for snowmobiling :)

That's a whole lot of snow! I've been to Houghton and the Keweenaw Peninsula, but it wasn't in the winter. It was towards the end of March. There was some snow, but not a whole lot. The last time I was in Michigan was a couple of years ago when I went to Detroit, and man, was it HOT!!!

Misty,

Large snowflakes can cast a shadow when they are close to a surface, but if there is any accumulation the indirect light overwhelms it.  Also, it is usually cloudy when it snows, so there is diffuse illumination, which leads to very diffuse shadows.
