Subject: Any idea on when Vue 6 will be out?

DrSax ( ) posted Tue, 28 February 2006 at 2:10 PM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 11:26 AM

I'm really not pleased with some aspects of Vue 5 (the incredibly long render times primarily and high amounts of noise) and am wondering if anyone has heard when Vue 6 might be released. I am hoping it will resolve many problems with Vue 5.

I know they're working on it. I also know that Vue6 will come in 64bit flavor. So I think e-on is going to need quite a lot of time to get Vue6 ready for shipping. A wild guess - maybe in a year.

I also hope e-on focuses on the rendering end of Vue. I often go back to Cinema 4D because I like the rendering. It's just so crystal clear and fast. I guess I am just spoiled with the renderer in Cinema 4D it simply rocks! I would rather see e-on improve what is already there. My Vue 6 wish list: - BETTER RENDERING (SEE CINEMA 4D) A faster, cleaner renderer. Very Important!! (Cinema 4D renders shadows flawlessly, clean and fast!) - MORE DETAIL (SEE TERRAGEN) More realistic (detailed) textures, rocks etc. like terragen. I don't know how Terragen does it but the landscapes look a lot more detailed and real. - LARGER WINDOW TO PREVIEW ANIMATIONS Larger animation preview window - FIX LIGHT Fix the quadratic light so it doesn't shine through spheres - 3RD PARTY INTEGRATION Allow 3rd party trees (xfrog etc.) to be animated and take on ecosystem settings. Allow animated objects to be imported from Cinema 4D, Maya, 3DS etc. - IMPROVED FLUID DYNAMICS Improved Fluid Dynamics (realistic oceans, waves etc.) and Volumetrics and Caustics IMO e-on should improve what is currently in Vue is improved and only then after that add new stuff. The Poser integration is great! THe Ecosystem is Great! The Animation is easy to use. Keep up the good work e-on!

wow, a lot of think asked... only one question : have you try a comparision from the price of cinema4d (with the modules needed for your request) and Vue5 ? i think if vue6 will be 3rd part integrated (like vray engine, etc) and all others features, the price will start for the moon... but maybe this is not a problem.... not for me, my wife is a rich woman !! ;)

bruno021 ( ) posted Wed, 01 March 2006 at 6:48 AM

Max animated objects can already be imported, check the Infinite software update at e-on. Agree for a faster rendering engine! Details textures: Hmm, I think everything you need is already here, just play with the function editor more. Realistic oceans: Have you tried the "open ocean" node in the function editor? Now what I have on my wishlist for Vue6 is: subsurface scattering, displacement mapping and true volumetric clouds. Which leads again to a much faster render engine, otherwise, we won't be able to use these functions, even if implemented.

LMcLean ( ) posted Wed, 01 March 2006 at 11:15 AM

rodluc2001, I thought of going all Cinema, but I don't for 2 reasons. 1. The Ecosystem I'm hooked and Cinema doesn't (AFAIK) have instancing like Vue to scatter objects like the ecosystem does. 2. Vue is just so fun to use. I love how easy it is to create terrains, vegetation etc. Cinema not as easy to create terrains. Cinema's Strengths: Rendering, Great Particle System, Hair, Modeling etc. (Cinema does have a cloud system now) Vues Strengths: Instancing (Ecosystem), Terrain Creation/Manipulatuion, Poser integration, Vegetation (Trees etc.) Some may not agree but this is what I've found so I use both for now. bruno021, - Max animated objects, "yes I remember seeing that now" - Faster Render Engine - but I would also say "clearer renders". Vue does a horrible job at rendering shadows IMO unless you render at super high quality and even then they look rather poor. Cinema renders shadows, particles, smoke etc, very well even at preview stage. "Of Course I am not being totally fair to e-on as Cinema costs 4 times the price so it should render better." - Detailed Textures - Maybe this is my fault I haven't totally explored the Function Editor regarding textures. All I know is that when I have never seen a Vue Landscape touch Terragen as far as detail goes. See link: - Yes I have tried the "open Ocean" node and like it a lot. I guess I would like to see e-on incorporate a SeaVue type of material into Vue and a way to create breakers and cresting waves. - SSS - Yes I think that would be great for skin textures etc. - Displacement Mapping - I agree but the only thing I don't like about it is it takes a looooong time to calculate the displacement maps. This has been my experience in Cinema (and it is fast) so in Vue I dread the thought of it getting any slower. - True Volumetric Clouds - I would like to see this too so I could create puffy cumulus clouds.

Maybe instead of displacement mapping, normal mapping, so the rendertimes do not go skyhigh

bruno021 ( ) posted Wed, 01 March 2006 at 5:12 PM

Cinema is on my wishlist, LMcLean, I just love it, playing with the 9.5 demo now! Vue renders can look a lot better (less harsh) if you apply a very slight gaussian blur in postwork. About shadows, I like Vue's soft shadow maps, but they don't fit for the sun, so what I do is reduce shadows to around 70-75%, so I don't need to go over the board with softness, 3% is enough then, and renders (a bit) faster.

Singular3D ( ) posted Thu, 02 March 2006 at 1:48 AM

Well, you don't need cinema 4D for displacement mapping, subsurface scattering, particle generator and so on. E-on should have a look what Carrara 5 Pro can provide for the same price. In my opinion that's the challenge for Vue and not the professional, but more expensive C4D. ...and of course stability! Vue 5 Esprit often tends to say goodbye. Sometimes with warning, but sometimes without. A good memory management should be able to let your work be saved before the system crashes. Vue's warnings very often come too late. This is a 'must improvement' for Vue6. Don't get me wrong. I'm a Vue user since version 4 and I really like the software, but for me it's far easier to do my landscapes in Carrara now. E-on has much work to do, which they neglected over this shop encryption thing IMHO. I often ask myself, how many people buy content there and if it really pays off for all the troubles they had. Hope E-on gets back on the right track with Version 6. Vue deserves it.

I just hope they release Vue Exstream for Cinema 4D. Then I can import into C4D and render there. Best of both worlds!

Yes Peggy, this may be more important. Hope they lower the prices...;-))

Phantast ( ) posted Thu, 02 March 2006 at 10:25 AM

Rather than wanting e-on to fix things in Vue 6, it would be better to press them to fix them in Vue 5. Number one thing to fix is this awkward confusion between materials and material zones, that prevents one from copying materials around (because it merges the zones).

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Thu, 02 March 2006 at 11:50 AM

I would not count on a price reduction for Extream. Users of 3D Studio, Maya, Cinema 4D, etc. are use to plug-ins that cost over $400.

" I also know that Vue6 will come in 64bit flavor" There is also a WinXP in 64 bit, what does that exactly means? What is the difference between 32bit and 64 bit cpu/software? I know that it has something to do with 01001100101 x 32 or 64 ect ect but what is the real difference? Thanks, Javil

bruno021, I think you will really like Cinema 4D the more you use it. I was looking at 3DS Max and Maya but settled on Cinema 4D because it's GUI was so much easier to understand and use. I still may look at Maya or 3DS Max in the future though but for now Cinema can do most everything that Maya and Max can do at 1/3 to 1/2 the price. Singular3D, Sure Carrera is another option. I think Carerra has come a long way since it's Ray Dream days. I was not suggesting Vue compete against Cinema if I understand you correctly. Vue and Cinema do totally different things and their strengths lie in different areas. I agree with you Vue needs to do a lot of work, but I just hope they focus the work in the most needed areas. Peggy, I would also like XStream, but I don't think I want to pay that much just so I can render a better Vue Scene. I think E-on has made a mistake going this route. IMO why not just improve the renderer in Vue or allow Vue to render using 3rd party renderer so everyone can get good renders not just those with Maya, Max etc.

bruno021 ( ) posted Thu, 02 March 2006 at 2:04 PM

xStream is aimed at the big studios who can pay for it, and the extra render nodes if they see interest in their pipeline. Seems like it's paying off with ILM going for it.

Singular3D ( ) posted Thu, 02 March 2006 at 4:48 PM

LMcLean, I'm with you. Especially on the xStream thing. It's not just the plugin. You also need Infinite! If you don't have it already this plugin costs more than $800. A bit too much, even for C4D IMHO.

@Javil: 64bit means a maximum address space of 2^64 bytes, which means 16 terabytes. The current 32bit OSes have a maximum address space of 2^32 bytes, which means 4 gigabytes. The maximum address space is usually divided into sections for OS and programs, in the case of Windows there's 2 GB address space per program, and the upper 2 GB is used by the operating system. A 64bit program running on a 64bit operatiing system and 64bit hardware will have an enormous amount of memory available (either physical or virtual). The out-of-memory problems 3D users often run into will be something of the past - for a couple of years, at least.
