Subject: Why I hate EF and Poser 7

Woohoo,

Waited like a 15 year old for his first kiss, Posers at the door, installed and raring to go.  Fire it up, so far so good.  Hey lets look at the SE content and see what we have;

Sydney - OK out of the box, she's uglier than a dirt pie.  Let's open up the morphs and see what we can do with her.  Hmmm, ecto, endo, meso--starting to soung a tad like Jessie.  What a minute, that's all there is.  I can make her fat, skinny or muscular (somewhat) and THAT'S IT!  OK, let's look at P7 humans other than the SE, hmmmmmm THERE ISN"T ANY!

CP - Alright, Sydney is a wash, let's run over to CP and sign up for my free 6 month's and use my $10 to buy some morphs.  OK enter address, log in, add Pasport to my cart, enter code, submit and TA Friggin DA, the code is either invalid or expired or whatever.

So what it seems to me is I have spent $130 to get a new rendering engine and seriously BENT OVER!  Am I ranting, you dang right I am.  I am so tired of companies promising great things and handing you dung on a plate.  Get your act together EF or sell the franchise to DAZ, at least they seem to know what the heck they are doing!

efstarlet ( ) posted Fri, 15 December 2006 at 6:50 PM

Sydney is the base female figure for Poser 7, she is not part of the SE content pack.  That is the formal wear and the casino scene.

Are you certain you are entering your coupon for the 6 month passport at the link you are directed to?  www.contentparadise.com/6mopassport.  The coupon does not work for the 1 year passport.  Email support and they can get you set up.  We do want to help you and get you your stuff.  :)

The $10 only works on e frontier products as well.  Just fyi.

Are you a Poser fan?  Show us on Facebook!

I have a stopper of a problem too.....

It seems I cannot complete my order for the couponed Passport Membership.

You registration system doesn't recognise my home address and it is not selectable from your drop down list!!

There is Isle of this that or the other, ...even the Isle of  Eigg, which I didn't think had above 6 souls living on it!!!

Please would you put the Isle of Man on your list  :cursing:

Silly me, I followed the instructions on the included card and clicked on the square on the right hand side (being right handed and all) verus the square on the left hand side of the advert.  Perhaps EF/CP would want to sperate where folks click to make so a 6 month membership versus a year, it would be a smidge less confusing.  Oh while we are at it, try posting that the free $10 is ONLY good for EF products and not those by other true artists.  Looks like most of the Free items offered by CP for Passport members were included with P7 SE, imagine that.  But all told, it still does nothing to explain the absolutely horrendous figure you call Sydney.  Did you make a deal with the person who created it, so you would put in the figure and forego any morphs so they could rack up the money selling ANOTHER product to make what you got in the first place useable?  Am I pissed off, you betcha red rider, and I quarentee that there will be a whole lot more of us as people install P7.

Microsoft builds a whole new OS (In the new year), that took em 5 years. The thing is no matter what OS they make, the shell always changes, and a whole lot of other features, and years of continous updates. And Upgrade.....about $160.00. Yes, I can get uptight about MS because the way they are, and the way they do things. Bill gates is one billionaire, but will not lend a person $1.00, unless it is one of his formal buddies. But will lend it to Africa, where their is no government, and constant tribes who only think about wars and taking the money for weapons, although their is good reasons to give money I can not disagree about helping, but homeless people lay in our streets in the west, and he will not give a cent. Gates is not the only person who I consider is greedy. My car is a wreck. And I am unable to afford a new one. And I work my butt off 6 days a week, for these people.

A new poser comes out a year and half later, and only add a few features, and the shell is the same as P5, P6. P7,  should have been a patch or update. But no..money was thought in hand.

I agree with Hopper, you should have disclosed the $10 voucher is for EF products only.
Secondly would it have been so difficult to make it obvious as to where to put the g#ddamn coupon number.
I bought P6 and used it once - went back to P5 - P6 in my opinion was a trainwreck of a program. I only purchased P7 for the potential to morph bodies - I hope its everything its promised to be.
I could care less for the rendering engine - I use Vue 6I.
I hope I didnt get burned again.

So what you are saying is it's ok to hedge and say any EF content versus ONLY EF content.  Semantics is not a game EF should be playing.  It's not that it's the $10, it's the principle of the matter.  Not to start a flame war or anything, but IMVHO, please place Vicky 4 and Sydney side by side, out of the box, no morphs and dare to compare.  It would be like comparing a diamond to a hunk of coal, Vicky 4 wins without a second glance.  It's a crying shame that companies continue to dump out half a$$ed products and rely on others to fix their mess.  You notice EF doesn't offer a 30 day money back guarentee.  I would return P7 back in a heart beat and wait for the full version of Vue 6I to be released.  You blew it E-Frontier.

RedtailHawk ( ) posted Fri, 15 December 2006 at 10:28 PM

**Installed 7 this morning and been playing all day. So far I'm overjoyed at the render times, I'm getting about double the speed of 6. Once you get used to playing with the lights the render has been better than expected, rather than far dang worse than expected in 6 more times than not. Shadows are better too....

Sydney is great to work with, did you not notice all the head morphs on the parameter dials hoppersan2000... ?... I made Sydney smile, frown, blink, the lot, far more natural than Vicktoria3 can. But she really does need some extra time spent on lights with her though.

Also had to use the material room to dull down the inside of her mouth, to stop that 'flashlight in the mouth' look, and dull her dazzling white teeth a bit... same old, same old... but at least her tongue looked wet. Not keen on going all the way over to the material room to change some MAT files though... :( .... quicker and easier just going to Pose.

Only played with Sydney, the funny robot cat thing, and the Anatomy bits so far. But I'm more than pleased with what I've made so far. Looks like a lot less postwork is needed too! If you get the lighting right and all the right boxes ticked for render settings, Poser 7 makes a far better render than 6, and with less effort getting things tweaked too.

Keep playing with 7

BTW, I see a few around the forums who are having some problems with Poser 7, it's behaving extremely well for me, like a dream. So if any one is getting hang-ups, or long render times etc, try looking at the specks of your PC. (Graphics card, memory, hard drive size/free space etc) It may not be up to the job.

A fully dressed Sydney only took 20 minutes to render at printing regulations (300 DPI, 3,000 pixel), shadows, the full works to get the best quality. This would have taken Poser 6 fifty minutes to an hour for the same amount of items. A huge extra time posering bonus for me, LOL.

Have fun

I'm not defending their wording here.  All I said was that they DID state that it was good for "any eFrontier content".  I definitely think it should have been explained more clearly, as most people (myself included) saw that and thought "anything on Content Paradise, since that's run by eFrontier".

*Pouts because my copy of P7 was supposed to arrive today and was held up by the windstorms around here yesterday and this morning...

Redtail,

Please tell me how you change the shape of her face, make the lips thinner or thicker, make the eyes larger or smaller, make her nose into anything other than what comes standard?  Hmmmm can't do it, well I for one am not happy just making her smile or blink.  I do not believe anyone who purchased Poser 7 is happy with just the limited abilities, if you are, I have a truck I would love to sell you that can one day be a Porsche with just a few add ons.

I would try to do some stuff in the faceroom as well, It's REALLY a brilliant lil complimentary prog in it's own right!

Further, you can also tweak the textures in there as well! Funny that the face-room is the most neglected "Room" in this program!

But I will agree on some of these software company's ever growing greed...A perfect example for these companies on how NOT to perform Bison-rutting on the customers is Pixologic's example! ONCE you get their program, you are eligible for their ABSOLUTLY FREE upgrades!

To give you an idea, imagine owning Poser 3, and getting an upgrade to Poser 5...FOR FREE, and you'll see what I mean...Too bad Pixologic is the only pay-prog out there that does that!**

Thats not a hedge, thats English. Your lack of understanding doesn't change that. Your assumptions do not make it "semantics". That sentance parses perfectly well and is perfectly clear.

Quote - Not to start a flame war or anything, but IMVHO, please place Vicky 4 and Sydney side by side, out of the box, no morphs and dare to compare.

I have. And I pick Sydney each time so far. V4 is an OK shape and a decent mesh, but Sydney is a much more expressive figure "out of the box". Additionally I much prefer her because she is actually a Poser figure, not a "semi poser compatible" figure. The built in lip synch, the face room... these are Poser features. V4 supports neither of them and really never will. Daz has only just now decided to support Poser 6.

Quote - Please tell me how you change the shape of her face, make the lips thinner or thicker, make the eyes larger or smaller, make her nose into anything other than what comes standard?

The face room. Its a feature that is more than two years old. Just because Daz isn't supporting it doesn't negate it's existence. No offense, but you mgiht want to take some time to familiarize yourself with all the abilities of the tool. If you are going to ignore the P7 features that Daz isn't supporting then use Daz | Studio, save yourself some money.

Poser 7 has already paid for itself. The render system is much improved, the library interface is much more usable now and the stability is improved. I don't buy the package for the included figure. Then again if I was not using the rest of the features and only using what Daz decided to support then the value proposition would be different.

Put me down as liking Sydney too, what I hate is reading a rant from someone who opens a new program, tries it for a few minutes, doesn't bother figuring out what he's doing, throws his arms up in the air, gives up and comes in here to rant like a little child on how everything sux.

Who cares what a character looks like out of the box, everyone has that character.   It's what you do with it to make it your own unique character that matters and with the face room and the morph packs available from RDNA the possibilities for Sydney are endless... if you give her a chance.

It's a shame we're all so used to morph packs that the face room gets ignored.  I agree with takezo3001 that's it's a great tool and wonder what it would be like if DAZ figures were also supported, but I guess that will never happen :(

Anyway, here's Sydney in default state and with three variations just using the faceroom for both morphing and texture tweaking.  I think I'll go back and try the new morphing brush for more details.

The only problem I had was Poser giving me an out of memory error  when I tried to generate a second hi-res texture.  I had to close Poser and restart it for each of the three texture mods.

I guess a lot of people just aren't familiar with the depth of Poser.

I had started a 900 frame rendering on Poser 6 shortly before I got P7 and I was up to frame 400 when P7 arrived. I decided to restart that same rendering on P7 and I've noticed a serious speed boost, while being able to jack up the render quality a bit. THAT is worth the upgrade price. Extra bonus points for Firefly's ability to work as a separate process now too - that seems to improve stability a lot.

Multiple undo's - while a feature that should have been there a very long time ago, finally made it in. THAT is worth the upgrade price alone.

I haven't gotten into the animation layers yet, but if it works as I understand it should, that's a wonderful new feature.

Then there's that new morphing tool - I haven't used it much yet, but I'm seriously hoping that with enough experience with it, that tool will have a lot of power.

I've no idea how the Talk Designer works, but it's a new feature as well, and there's a bunch of stability improvements too - all for $130 (upgrade price). That's quite cheap for everything in the program. The new content is just the icing on the cake; I haven't used Sydney yet, but  Simon looks like he has a lot of potential, and the screenshots posted of face room work seem like the tool gives wonderful results.

Anyway, my point is that this software has a lot that justifies the upgrade. I thought P6 with the addition of video card support was a godsend (I started using Poser on version 5 which didn't perform very well at all IMO), but P7 with all the aforementioned stuff is pretty darn good too!

Use the tool, get familiar with it before dissing it; your post almost seems to have the same tone as those who like to say that there's been nothing new in Photoshop since version 5. I guess those people have no need for type design options, do not appreciate the perspective tool's time saving options, don't care for the improvement in vector handling capabilities, etc etc. They probably just check the filters and make their decision based on that. Sad.

Whoah, sorry for the long post. Guess I got on a rant myself heh.

KarenJ ( ) posted Sat, 16 December 2006 at 6:01 AM

I really like the morphing tool. Haven't played that much but it's great for solving pokethrough, as well as making morphs, and adding little touches of realism (like flattening a character's butt when they're sat down on something!)

Multiple undo is fab as well.

I can't really see complaining about the morphs in the base characters. Got used to that in the last 2 versions of Poser. But with the morph tool available, I don't think I'm going to bother with buying the morph packs anyway.

Ok hoppersan2000 I remember AutoCad in the 80s, very very high price and what did you get. Well if you weren't a drafter, I mean a real one. you have a very high end program that does about nothing. It didn't come with all the goodies that programs come with now. Oh 3ds in the 80s was the same, if you didn't know how to use it, it was just taken space on you 8088. I have P7 and I'm very very happy with it.  Why don't you find a free program that does all of that...

...I'd also point out that there are multiple other problems/complications/less-than-desirable-functionality issues with relying on using the Face Room as your character-generation means.  Not the least of which is that you can't "Save" those dial settings, to allow future tweeking.  You can only hope that what you can kinda see in the Face Room (with it's mono-low-contrast-lighting and small preview window) is exactly what you'll actually see in the Pose Room and spawn a morph for it.  If you want to tweek something a week (or month) later, you'll have to start over from scratch, unless you wrote down all the settings.

I actualy like the Face Room and think it could really add a lot of value to the supported figures - if it just had a few things fixed (primarily being able to save dial settings, a larger or re-sizable preview window and some additional lighting and/or displaymode options).

I export all the morphs created in the face room but you can also just rename the head morph dial and the respective eye morphs into something more meaningful for you and go back in the face room for more tweaking.

Changes to the lips can be done with the new morph tool. That`s really easy 😄

For the eyelid.... just start C4D for a moment 😉 It should be easy to change that too...
but I agree - I don´t think there`s a way to do it in Poser.

True enough - My appologies again though, I was thinking that I was replying to a different thread, so my thought train was not about whether or not there was ultimately some way to accomplish those tasks, but was more along the lines of the end-user ease-of-use aspects.  Turning a "Lip Style 1" dial would be much easier/faster for most Poser users. :)

karanta,

Re all those Sydney face dials, you should perhaps look to installing my old Poser 5 Dial tweak.  It works in P6 and apparently still works in P7.  Netherworks has it on his site under Poser 7 (or you can find it under Poser 5 Tips & Tricks at poserpros).  It'll reduce the real estate used per dial by at least 50% (vertically) allowing you to see way more dials at once, without any reduction in functionality, and to me it makes the dial name much more readable too.  Just a thought...

Actually you can't. Well you can if you haven't closed Poser on the current faceroom work.  Once you've made a face and saved the figure as a PZ3 and left Poser, you can no longer modify the face in the faceroom again.

Well I should say that I haven't been able to take Sydney back into the faceroom from a saved PZ3 after I've closed Poser and the PZ3 file. Reopening a PZ3 of a character who's been faceroom modified results in the error message that you're trying to take an unsupported character into the faceroom. At least that's been my experience to date in Poser 7 with Sydney.

You bought a 286 in 1984 when they were still only selling 8088's? Wow! Must be nice to have a time machine or insider access to technologies not yet available to the public  I guess that's why it cost you so much.

I bought my first PC in 1984 also and it was the Tandy 1000(A) 8088 with 16 colors for a whopping $1,000. I upgraded it to the 286 board two years later when they were available to the general public.

In anycase, I don't hate EF or Poser 7, I just had to balk at the price you paid.

I couldn't remember how long I had been using it, I just think I was using it when I met her. Maybe not. The memory's not what it once was. Maybe I was still working on the Tandy, but I don't think so. In any case, to buy that 286, along with AutoCAD, along with a B size HP plotter, along with about 4 hours training cost $12,000. I never thought too much about the SE content when ordering Poser7, but I am a sucker for limited-time-only freebies.  If Poser7 actually has the new functionality listed in the "7 reasons" and remains as reliable (predictable?) as the current Poser6 SR3, then I'll have gotten precisely what I paid for.

Oh I believe the price tag if you're including Autocad. Autocad was a $10,000 piece of software back then. I know because I priced it. I just didn't make the connection that you were including all of the above in that price tag. I thought you were saying the 286 cost that much. Chalk it up to poor reading comprehension on my part.

I hear ya on the memory not being what it used to be. LOL! I was making an estimation on when I upgraded to the 286 myself and couldn't pull a clear date out of my brain for nothing. But I know I bought the Tandy in 1984 because that was also the year I got hired with American Airlines. I knew it wasn't til a year or two later that I upgraded to the 286.

I've gotta say though that trying to compare Poser to Autocad is a bit of a stretch.

LostinSpaceman, I was not trying to compare Poser to AutoCAD. My intention was merely to point out how very spoiled we all are these days. I say 'we' and I include myself. And it's nice to be spoiled. But it's worthwhile sometimes, too, or so I think, to be reminded of it. It tempts one not to whine quite so much.

As for your 'poor reading', it was probably my poor phrasing. I said 'that very very basic system.'

Well, it was considered anything but basic back then, but its capabilities would be considered exponentially basic by today's standards. I probably should have better clarified my meaning.

Yup, we spoiled ourselves by starting out giving away stuff as freebies. I can agree with that I also agree that whining without actually reading directions first can be annoying as hell to those who take the time to follow directions.

Not all whines are bad though. I myself enjoy a good Blackberry Whine once in a while. :tongue2:
