Hmm, I have not really had issues like this. I comment on ArtPearl's watercolors and I know very little about watercolor technique, but I can appreciate the result. Same for KenErnest63's awesome digital painting in Photoshop. He has a thousand times my skill and does a lot of things that blow my mind - but he has thanked me for my comments many times, and while I tend to praise his work maybe 1/3 of my comments for him are not completely positive. Similar for Rutra, while I own a copy of Vue 6i, I am pretty ignorant of how it works, but he still seems to appreciate comments, again, not all of which are "awesome" "amazing".
Since pretty much everybody here has gotten comments from me - I didn't critique Khai's because his recent ones seem to be a WIP for a commercial product that I don't have any interest in - are my comments worth the time it takes me to write them? Because frankly it costs me a lot of time :)
erm correction.... it's not a commercial product., I don't post WIP's of my commercial stuff... I keep those secret until complete ;)
it's my TARDIS design... while it's a WIP, I decided to make an ongoing story of it using the images to illustrate the work done by this surviving Timelord stuck in 19th century New York....
Quote - All i was asking is if this CG was dead ... thats all..
Nobody needs to say sorry or explain why he did or did not comment in the last days.
I for one was happy with good comment that helped me .. "Great image" 30 times is fun for the rulers of the most commented club
I try and at least look at every image, but many of them I don't bother commenting on because they aren't my cup of tea. I'm also of the school which says that if you can't say something nasty about someone, don't say anything at all :) Actually, what this means is that if I can't find something critical/helpful to say, and the image doesn't really grab me viscerally or aesthetically, and ther isn't anything particularly exemplary about it (such as a great use of lighting etc.), I'm likely to not say anything.

You don't need to work with or understand the software that the image was created in in order to give an opinion as to whether you like the image or not or if you see flaws or deemed imperfections that strike you as needing improvement. The important thing is the end result, not the tools that created it.
This is exactly what I'm thinking. I never go and look what kinda software did the artist used I'm looking the end result and if I like it or not I'll post my opinion or not :)
Strength Is Life, Weakness Is Death
I wish I could find a way to make it clearer to viewers/commenters - If the comment comes from you personaly (from the brain or heart) and not a 'stock' comment - I realy appreciate it. It makes no difference how long it is, if its critical or favorable, if you're an expert or a newbee. Its the personal touch. I am just so amazed that people I dont know would take the time to look at my work & comment, and I am greatfull for that. If you give me a clue how to fix the flaws you saw- it is obviousely helpfull, but not at all mandatory.
Sometimes not knowing the tools is actually an advantage. I know I tend to be more lenient in my comment if I know some aspect is hard to achieve using that technique. But realy I shouldnt - if it doent work- it doesnt work. Choose another method, get different content, post a question on the forum, or just accept it that other people can see the flaws too and move on...
We all know the "emperor's new cloth" - the little kid who yelled 'the king is naked' probably knew nothing about fashion, cloth making, the economy of the textile industry, indecency laws, cancer dangers of exposed skin etc.. he just knew what he saw and he voiced it. So speak up people!
To finish i'll admit a couple human failings -
-Being naive, I think that if you say you want critique, I think you actually want it. If I am too harsh sometimes, send me a message and i'll appologize and stop.

Conniekat8: Just look at the first post in the thread it explains how you can add other people to your favs so you get e-bot notices when someone from the CG posts, and you can start critiquing. Karen will add you to the list when she looks in. How refreshing to see someone who wants to give more than they want to take , you're so welcome!

Hey guys (and gals)... Sorry I haven't been commenting or posting much, but when it rains it pours. I've just been bombarded with work and new job offers (rare in my field, so I take 'em when I can get 'em... hehe) I will try to comment when I can, but am leaving tomorrow for a 5 month gig and the housing that they have for me has no internet so it will be dial up through my cell when I get the chance. Thank you all for the comments, I will eventually be posting the final draft of my last piece as soon as i get a chance to finish it. It's come a long way from the original already. Thanks Again, R
Hello again guys!
Would anyone be too offended if I only commented on the most recent uploads of the group instead of trying to sort through my inbox and try to figure out where I left off? I really love this group but the thought of even opening my email gives me a headache (not to mention all the 'Lose 50lbs in 10 days!' and 'You're Pre-Approved for a new Visa Card!' spam I know is sitting in there :P)
Hugs
Ana
Fine by me :)
If you have POP3 email or have an email box that allows you to sort your mail by message rules, you should consider setting up some mail rules.
I have several message rules in my outlook express:

You do not have to actually take the emails, and in fact you can turn them off completely if you want to. I currently just go through the list of people I have favorited and do it that way rather than by email, since I cannot comment every day of the week and can't keep up with the emails.

You can view each gallery from that link, and you can also turn off email notifications from there if you like.

aah, uh-oh, okay, you can just imagine I almost fell off my chair this morning when I saw the email saying 'you made it to the art charts'.... moi? huuh? can't be!
Then I realized that it is because of a lot of favorites, due to the critique group... makes sense!
This brings me to the point... it's little unfair to those whom really deserve it :(, the critique group is skewing the art charts, I think?
What do other people think of this?

Quote - As opposed to being skewed by the buddy system you mean!! :-^)
They're doing it so it's okay for me to do it too? I'm not much into that, or into worrying what others are doing.
I prefer to self police, as I found that policing and trying to direct others is an effort in futility. When I complain about others I never know if it made any difference.
When I use the same effort and energy to get myself to do the right thing, I know that at least one person did it. Plus, once a perason trains themselves to not worry and complain about everyone else's faults, it's actually lot easier and less time consuming.

Yes, I got that when I joined the critique club. I am putting it on my CV (resume)...:)
Anyone who thinks the artchart are of any importance, deserves to be pushed off it by someone who doesnt care about it one bit.
The only problem with it, Connie, is now the only way is down! We will never achieve this glamorous position again! Oh the dispair the anguish...

Well, I wouldn't dispair I still keep optimistic that between now and the time I die (or maybe after that) I'll make some sort of an art chart on my own merit. (And shhh... none be pinching me out of this dream!)
That's why we participate in the crit group, no? To improve ourselves and (instantly make the art charts)
I find it humorous, however I'm sure there will be those who get theior panties all bunched up over it, and when it comes down to it, it's really not fair.
I do wish there was another mechanisam available on rendo for such a thing... Perhaps it could be formulated a bit better and put on a wishlist of improvements, if it keeps active.

Who me? Nope. And there isn't even a quiz...
Connie just to reassure you, that statistic "most favorited" is the only one that has been disturbed on an on-going basis, and it fixes itself in a week or two. The other statistics have been undisturbed. If this effort gets consistently large enough that 60 of us regularly leave comments - well, it has never been that consistent so far, but it could happen - then ... that is normal, fair use of the gallery. I don't see any moral dilemma at all, and I think about moral dilemmas all the time ;)

Yeah, I agree, you have a point there!... after reading your post from a while ago pointing that out! Madamme Kalon made me read it! ;P
Moral dilemmas... sounds so refined, I think I'll use that term to describe my incessant worrying about things :D

Just curious about how people are using the critique group. Say you've posted an image and have received a ton of helpful critiques. Do you take the information and apply it to your next image or do you go back and re-work the original image? If you re-work the image, how do you post it? Do you edit the original image and replace it with the new and improved or do you post the improved image anew? I've seen a lot of people respond to critiques in their own comments, but it seems to me unlikely that the original critic will be back to see the comment. I wonder if there is a way to make the critiquing process more of a dialogue. Obviously the surest way to get further feedback is to post the improved image as a new image, but then you have two similar images in your gallery and if you delete the original image, you lose all of your comments. I wish there was a way to trigger an ebot when you update an image. Anyway, I'm curious how others are dealing with this. -Alan
that's what the art theory forum is for. personally, i think not having it be a conversation will help me when i finally finish something. it's better for me not to respond- mostly what will come out is a defense. i think it depends on how you want to use it. conversations are great, but when it comes to feedback, i find i need to shut my mouth and listen first.
@ Conniekat8: As has been said, give it a week or two and you'll slide off that chart... Granted even though its only due to the critique group, its a really great feeling huh? Besides, after awhile (as far as I've noticed) you'll start getting more comments and favorites just because this group has helped us all grow to be better artists.
@ alanpfd: When I fix an image based on the critique comments, I usually just repost it as an edit instead of posting a whole new one. I do this for two reasons.
I do want to keep all my comments. There have been several times that I've run back through what was posted looking for tips and tricks on doing certain things. I hope to keep those as long as R'osity lets me :P
Call me selfish but as a non-paying member, I'm only allowed one post per day and I really want to make sure I can get all my current work posted (most times with previous comments on other images implemented in.) I find that if I wait too long to make a new image and/or upload it, I forget and never do it.
But of course these are personal reasons. I'm sure others could feel differently.
Ana
I hate reworking images because I get bored of them very quickly. However, what I've been doing with my last 2 uploads was looking at the comments and then reworking the image for a final upload. I leave the first image up, and then upload the final product with "Final -Revisited" beside the title. This way people can see the progression of the image and know that I'm not going to rework the image anymore.
The reason I do this is because if you upload an edited image, who knows about it? You need to sent a PM to everyone who commented so that they can look at it again. Then there is the fact that earlier comments are no longer relevant to the image because they have been changed/fixed, so that really messes things up for someone who may come along down the road and look at your image and then look at the comments and wonder "WTH?"
I don't know how people manage to pump out an image or even more per day. So this is what works for me.

Yeah I tend to leave the original version up and even more, on the revision I link the previous version.
