Subject: OT: I HATE VISTA AND WILL BE OFF LINE A FEW DAYS!

Lyne ( ) posted Sat, 19 January 2008 at 9:56 PM · edited Fri, 31 January 2025 at 10:55 PM

As both my best friend and I reformat our 500 gig drives and go back to xp... am betting things will run better after all the odball wonky things vista 32 started doing (already reloaded the damn thing once myself when system files went crazy) and now her's is too... truth is apparently our "old" 32 bit programs just really do run often in emulation and vista does not like it..whatever... I want my steady (don't think about it, just use it) XP back!!! The drivers I had to get for my one year old printer, my mouse etc. are like faked out vista drivers and do not work right... so took away some functionality... so the bloom is off the rose... lot of backing up and then will be "gone" till we get all set back up and happy as clams!! My poor friend has a hot machine (not as much as mine) but never could get her poser open at the same time as photoshop!?? and Poser 6.3 would not ever look or work right.... I think our programs have "hit the wall" and are happiest on XP... and ya.... you can say "told ya".... live and learn.... good thing I have reformatted and reinstalled a few times... as she has not so we shall go step by step together...

mainly if you do not hear a peep out of me, that is why...

Hugs,

Lyne

PS I AM SURE MY VUE 6 WILL RUN FINE ON THIS HOT MACHINE EVEN WITH XP...so not giving up anything!:))

Lyne,
well if your PC is good enough, ie VERY recent/good motherboard, going to vista ultimate with more RAM maybe an idea. (don't know yer specs)
new system works great with Vista ultimate 64 bit, just have to work on it to get through the bugs :D

that should help a LOT :)

Lyne you need to go with 64 bit so you can use at least 8 gig of ram if you ever going to be satisfied with using Vue 6 infinitie.   XP pro 64 bit is what I am using and no problems at all with it and any the software I want to run with it.
I am gun shy of Vista and it will be many long days and nites I hope before I have to install it. :)

I have a dual boot system with Vue 6 INf installed on Windows XP Pro 32 bit and also have it installed on Windows XP Pro 32 bit.
The 64 bit lets me use the full 8 gig of ram where the 32 bit is only using 3 gig at max.  I can compare the two and believe me the 64 bit will blow circles around the 32 bit. :)

I know its up to you what you want to install and do so don't take my comment as trying to tell you how to run your business as some like to do.  What ever makes you happy is what its all about. :)

Iam sorry, there is no way I would ever go back to XP.I am not sure what is happening with so many people and Vista. I am running Vista Ultimate x86 with all the eye candy,Vue 6 Infinite Poser 7 Cinema 4D ect. on a machine that at the time of purchase was moderately high end (2G DDR2 RAM Intel Core 2 Duo) and everything runs fantastic.Vista is so stable its almost to easy:P Only thing I have issues with Vista are alot of Adobe programs mainly the CS3 line, which is easily fixed running in XPSP2 compat mode.I really wish i knew what the problems were with Vista and how some people can have such problems. I do agree with silverblade, you MUST turn off that UAC crap.Links, there a big help for tweaking.

I dont understand your comment.
Some people like vista and some don't .
If the operating system one has makes them happy then that is all that matters.
Information makes me happy also and from what I read on tech forums there are lots who dont like vista.  Percentage wise more dislike features than like it.  Especialy corporations with 1000's of computers that they work with each day.

My daughter works for USA Today and they will not use vista.  They have over 1500 computers in the one high rise she works from.  Read the tech forums and I think you will find lots who still use XP and refuse to go to vista. :)

One day I may have to go to vista but I hope its a long time before the switch.  I am happy with XP and Windows 200 Pro and still use Windows 98 on 2 computers. :)

Trepz if I have offended you or anone else I opolagize because I didnt mean my comments to be that way...

iloco,
Vista is nto as good as it SHOULD be, I could go on at length about how Capitalism at extreme, becomes self defeating, and Microsoft is proof of that. (sigh not meant as political arguement just how buisness can become it's own worst enemy by being too powerful, not enough good competition etc)

however, Vista for me currently works fantastically well! I was dreading the switch, form previous Microsoft screw ups etc...thankfully in my case, I paid the poor sod at local PC shop to build system for me, and he had all hassles of the install etc, not me  ;)

New system and Vue works a TON better.
Vue = 1 hr 50 min render 2% resources left vs 10 min render 85% resources left...no constest! :)

have not converted yet, and never meant to start a "discussion".... for ME and for my friend (two brand new computers built more for gaming than the OLD software that will NO WAY TAKE A 64 BIT version... and who really KNOWS why the glitches IN THE OS are happening to us other than what I stated.... but the old addage... "if it aint broke, why fix it".... both our old hardware was too old - that started the whole thing... and we both have very fast NEW type ram so 2 gigs of THAT will be much faster on a new machine with xp, plus other good stuff such as the best video cards bought FOR our software (she does not use vue, I do) - she and I want to stick to poser 6.3 and an OLD mail program for our comfort zone...and some older other software....keep in mind we are both disabled in some ways and have certain needs... it's all so individual...but why? well... ask MS??  My son GAMES on his vista and loves it... but then he is a techie and can FIX things on the fly... she and I cannot. We have to have reliable... :)

Lyne,
I do appreciate that :)
I'm ill too, just the stress of setting up the system/installing it, left me buggered for 2 days, lol.

vista can run apps in compatibility mode, for Xp service pack 2, for instance, that usually sorts it :)

Trepz - Thanks for the guides. I have both Vista Ultimate and XP on my machines. What I call my Vista machine has Vista 32 and XP 64 in a dual boot. I added the XP 64 to speed up Vue. My other machine has XP 32. Both machines have 4 gig because at one time I was going to have them both be 64 bit machines, but it never materialized.  I don't have any trouble with Vista at all. I run in Administrator mode. What I don't like is that even in Admin mode, some files and folders aren't accessible unless I go in and change the security, etc. This is a pain. At one point I had access to all, then suddenly it changed. My guess is an update changed that. My UAC was checked, but I unchecked it. However, aside from that, i have never had a problem.

From reading and listening, I think that older machines and / or older programs or components mess up how Vista works. Most of my stuff is relatively new since I review so much. When I loaded Vista, I was careful what I put on. When I go for my next machine it will have Vista 64 Ultimate on it, but that will be down the road. However, it will have to be dual boot because some of my perifierals, my film scanner, Nikon SuperCool Scanner 5000 ED, will not run on any form of Vista. So far Nikon has no plans to update it so that it will work on Vista. I have no nice words for that. .

Sorry, Lyne,  you are having so many problems. I have been there and done that and its no fun.

My pleasure for the links,it is always better to understand your machines I think(;

Funniest thing just happened to me:P Well not funny, but anyway.I installed an older version of Skype and  it bluescreened me.I had to do an emergency repair. So I put in my Ultimate disk and hoped for the best, and  it fixed the problem entirely. My first SERIOUS issue, but it answered my own question(; Love the fact that I could do that with Vista though.I think with XP it would have been a reformat(; (which is also insanely fast with Vista)

Trepz I have to ask after your last comment about repair with vista.   Have you ever used XP and how long.
Yes there is a repair back to last known good configuration and there is also a restore back to last good configuration and you dont need to hunt a cd to do it for the restore back.....:)

Also most people who have important stuff on their HD's will use backup utilitys like ghost to keep a good image ready if they dont use the above 2 ways to restore.
To format its as easy with XP as vista if you do it from the install cd. :)

Having used every windows from version 3.0, XP 64 sits on my dual core and quad core machine with XP32.
No i ignored the stop gap windows 98 me and 2000 though did manage get the 98 defrag of 98ME as its bloody faster than 98se one, so i wont touch vista with a 10 foot barge pole as i will buy windows 7 in 2 years which will make vista obsolete.
No wounder gates keeping XP 64 far longer now as he don't want people go mac, and i have used vista on various machines, and find xp better.
Though if you have to use vista especially for the Internet you must buy vista 64 as it has more security features than vista 32, so if you use 6 vista to surf online ya far safer than using 32 vista online.
Got a friend to try with both versions while he on holiday, on 2 spare machines to download from net and to have spyware install to both machines.
He said as i said he found vista 64 would work with some spyware that would make vista 32 slow down or not boot, so viista 64 is the clear winer against vista 32.
Just like xp pro is more secure than xp home and i have 2xp pro and 3 xp home.

I'm hesitating installing Vista on my machines. My husband bought a new laptop with Vista and it is sooo slow! One would think it is built on Win95! And lots of small annoying issues.

As you all probably know Microsoft will discontinue WinXP June 2008.
There is a "Save Win XP" site where one can sign up. Some 30.000+ are on the list already. As much as I dislike registering on sites I did it on this one because I really want them to keep supporting XP. One can only hope it makes a difference.

**and two weeks later.... third re-load, because my upgraded xp ...well never mind... I bought the FULL xp, then my anti-virus suite I chose...well never mind... STILL working at it all!!.... (some days just depressed), but on days I work with the machine, my OLD mind is learning NEW tricks, when I have to "do it all myself" with just phone help from my son, as he can't come back here right now... oooo my!

and fyi... did a "repair" of Vista and all it did was RELOAD IT ALL and at first things worked better, till things started to glitch up (the reload did not hurt, programs - helped them at first)... BUT you have to reload the main drivers again - motherboard, video etc...

Learned the hard way a restore point in vista WILL TAKE OUT THE PROGRAMS YOU INSTALLED after that point too!!.... I did not realize that so now using those restore points only during install, like "before windows updates" before IE7, after this and that... and then WHEN THE THING WORKS THE WAY I WANT AND STAYS SO FOR AT LEAST A WEEK, I'LL DO A RESTORE POINT THEN ! - to keep my OS and software safer... !

I think it was way back at win2k that had a "real" repair that looked for corrupted system files... but anyway... my dyslexic brain does NOT want a duel boot system.... shudder when my son told me how to set that up, I nearly cried... you have no idea when you honestly do not know your left and right and words are not what they appear to be,etc....

I THINK I am "almost home"... I went shopping here a little and really want to shop at the e-on store ... but ... well.... my brain is frazzeled! (I almost lost my router settings and one install I forgot to have it all plugged in!! sheesh!! DUH!! How can my poor windows and motherboard drivers know what to load when I don't have it plugged in? ah well... I hope all my lessons (and a million post notes!) STICK!! :)

Still working....

Sorry Lyne, that sucks, and I do appreciate how sick that can make you, was sick as a rat for a week myself doing the swap over, and that's without the stress of having to actually build the damn PC :p

So far, Vista has been a fantastic improvement for me, but, it's Vista ultimate, quad core, 8 gig RAM on superb motherboard.
There's a new Service Pack for RHino so that should clear that up. Just hope a couple of my very old, and irreplacable photoshop plugins work, as they areno longer supported, and I have yet to put them in (they are installered prgrams, not just basic filters: ULEAD GIF X and Genesis).

I got a laptop for my Mum in the SUmmer (well, she paid for it :P), and yes, Vista does NOT work on 512 RAM, bloody stupid to sell a 512 RAM laptop with Vista, had ot upgrade it.

Thus I think, if you are buying a NEW system, and a good one, get Vista ultimate and lot of RAM. Otherwise, you may as well stick to XP.

lol not insane, 64 bit CAN address that (iirc limit is 2 tertrabytes of RAM actually but very few motherboards can take more than 8 gigs of RAM at moment and obviously RAM chips themselves are sitll limited in size), thus, my Illithid Eclipse scene with tons of models, only went down to 73% resources, while editing. 2 gig system would have died with half as much, AND I could edit it smoothly in the 8 gig system.

Muhaha!! ;) There's method in my madness, sir :thumbupboth:

just checked:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778.aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_vista
128 gigs is max for vista ultimate, but 64 bit systems should theoretically be able ot handle 2 tertabytes iirc ;)

remember, it's a 64 bit system....not 32 :)
Just need ot make sure you have a good motherboard that can handle that amount of RAM.

No idea on your area, but long as buying from decent outlets, should be ok.

I guess the prices of ram are falling.  You can buy 4 gigs of performance Kingston ram for DDR2 at 800 mhz for just over $140.  Check the link below:

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA24120

I recently dumped my old AMD cpu/motherboard for an Intell Core 2 Duo E4600 Chip with an ABIT IP35-V motherboard.  I've been slowly reloading various operating system configurations onto it and am wondering about using Vista 64bit.  Previously I had XP 64bit and it all worked okay.  However, my curiosity with Vista is getting the better of me so I'm going to be loading up a configuration with that and hope all goes well.  From what I've read here, I think it should be okay because my board and chip are new.

As for 8 gigs ram being insane it is not for something like Vue.  When you start to have vue images with 5 poser characters imported, each with accessories, along with many plants, etc. you'll find that all that ram will help make your work move more smoothly than with less ram.  Things begin to really crawl with dense Vue scenes when you don't have enough ram.

Vue has been vastly improved since 4 of course, but the memory issues still linger on.
