Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 02 2:40 am)
Jamminwolf:
The problems are these:
1. No Professional license for distribution. (Although I'm not sure how that would be enforced. Maybe I'll buy the pro version eventually.)
2. Generated Mesh isn't Quads. Retopologizing the mesh would solve problem 1, but you'd likely lose the wonderful UV mapping that takes place in Clo3d, creating even more problems with complex stuff
3. It's best to use a dense polygon setting for best results with folds and stuff like that. This makes grouping a LOT more difficult, unlike in max where Modifiers give you the smoothing while you work on the low poly mesh.
4. Why go through all that stuff when Poser already as a cloth room? lol. Daz has cloth dynamics too, but I think you gotta buy it.
Yea lol, that's totally understandable. The program you're using most likely didn't have Poser in mind when it was built.
No, DS does not have a "clothes dynamic" room or tab or anything, all we have are empty promises and premade dynamic clothes by OptiTex. Well, at least Daz did do something about getting "some" dynamic clothes available for us after us being jealous of Poser for so long lol.
Thanks anyways, William :)

wolfie, note that Marvelous Designer/Clo3D is talking to DAZ regarding having their own dynamic plugin in DS4.
Re the MD2 limitations: The personal license really allows anything for an individual user except for for-profit distribution of 3D meshes. I.e. you're allowed to sell images, and you're allowed to give away freebie models.
The triangles/quads thing can probably be resolved automagically in some other 3D app, although I suspect that such solutions are less than satisfactory. Thankfully, the Poser cloth room prefers triangles, and that's what I would primarily use it for myself. But that's no consolation for DS users.

How about the $700 price tag for anything outside of personal/noncommercial use. And the mesh you end up with is terrible for rigging, as nice as it might be for dynamics. Neat product, not really a great fit for Poser content creation though.
It's not like you can't easily do this stuff in a traditional modeler.

The engine to run the cloth sim is there in D|S, but what they won't give you is an open format for models to be used with dynamics. It's an arbitrary business decision to make it impossible for anyone but Optitex to provide models. Smart for Optitex I suppose, terrible for everyone else, even for DAZ, since it greatly limits the variety and amount of models they'll be able to broker and profit on. Essentially they tied a hose clamp on their profit line.

That's tough for a hobbyist seller. But again, note what I said above: commercial renders are fine.
As far as what is easy to develop in a traditional modelling app - well, that's gonna vary from person to person, clearly.

Really? Thanks, B3D :) I had no idea, maybe I didn't find any threads about that, surprisingly. With news like this, I would think it would be all over Commons. And because of OptiTex's year & 1/2 long empty promise, I'm suspicious that Daz further their search and found these guys. I hope they cut OptiTex out for such a lame deal they put us through for their profits.

Which is exactly why I said that Daz made a mistake dealing with them in the first place (though they themselves didn't know probably) 'cause I was, and am still highly suspicious of this action from OptiTex. Also, Daz's original plan, as far as I believe, was to supply us with a dynamic clothes creator (room in Poser language) and to allow vendors to create/sell some through them.

Quote - It's quietly noted in that long thread on MD2 in the Commons forum over at DAZ. Fairly early on - second page or so.
But especially, see the third post in this thread on the MD forum:
Hope I'm allowed to post that here....

I'm sure they knew, I think they just expected that the arrangement would make them a lot of money - but it turns out that the Optitex people are extreeeeeeemely slow in producing content, and also DAZ has dozens of imaginative designers that loyally broker through them that are entirely cut out.

Now I'm remembering I seen that thread before, didn't know it had anything to do with dynamic clothes, I'll have to go look in sometime later.
I'm a bit confused about marvelous's plan to give "animation" support in DS... ? Like we need yet another animation tool lol, we have two already hehe. But really, what's "animation" have to do with creating dynamic clothes? I guess I'm saying I don't understand the term right.

And they don't even set the material zones right, very sloppy work, even setting opacity to 88% by default LOL, and we weren't getting very good textures at all till texture vendors teamed up with them. Don't know how their settings are though, haven't been able to afford anything at all, and most stuff coming out are for M4 which I have absolutely no interest in.

Guess not. :) Dynamics are animation. That's why if you look at Poser's top horizontal menu, the Animation menu includes recalculation of dynamics for cloth and hair. In order for dynamic hair and cloth to work, they require a draping timeline. I don't know how Optitex does things, but Poser drapes over the course of frames: you start your unmorphed figure at zero position at frame 1, and end your animation timeline with your final pose and morph.
Truth is, dynamics are almost the only animation I've ever done.

I think they're referring to the trial version - something you would eventually want to uninstall ;o).
Yes. In my case, though, I had a freeze and so tried an uninstall and reinstall, which is what toasted things for me.

No, I love it. Not as much time for it as I would like, and I haven't sprung the $99 yet, but I will do so before the introductory price expires.
OTOH, I'm not a modeller. I can whip up something pretty decent with this in an evening; I'm sure I couldn't model that quickly. Just a shorter learning curve with this.
Besides, just because the whole thing is based on dynamics, there's something attractive about it right there.

Of course, I should add that I do find some things cumbersome with it. But the developers are very responsive, and they've given it some very good improvement in the short time I've been using the app.

It does pretty neat stuff, but I'm not interested in it at all due to the price and the fact that it doesn't really do anything I can't already do, plus the mesh it makes is pretty much dynamics-only. If it produced quads without that horrible topology it might be more interesting to me.
Probably because I learned sewing in my early years, and have done free-hand creation of patterns for re-enactment costumes later in life. So this was one of the best things to roll down the pike, IMHO.
My very first dress only took about 3 hours, of which about two was spent just reading the manual, watching the videos, fiddling with the interface to learn which buttons did what, and the optimal way to set things up. The result was almost exactly what I had intended, and there was almost no frustrations involved.
By the time I had completed the dress, I had decided to buy. It was that easy!
I have to admit some of the results are stunning! What seems more logical to me, though, would be an interface similar to this in Poser's Cloth Room. Integration would allow control of the number of polys using Poser's 'smoothing', ability to animate, not having to export/import figures, and native UVW's. It might take a massive amount of coding for the interface and speeding up draping, however.
Impressive, but the price tag for the commercial version is way out of line. That would just about pay for Modo, and it's the same as ZBrush, both of which do a lot more.

You have to remember, though. This program was originally developed for real-world clothing designers... people who have entire clothing lines to develop. The Poser-oriented 3d-only uses are, in fact, only a secondary, albeit very welcome, adaptation. For it's original purpose, the price is seen simply as a normal business cost. Yes, it's expensive for us, but they -are- trying to work with their newest user base as best they can. There are continuing discussions over at the MD forums about future pricing, and licensing formats. Stay tuned.
P.S. They just announced a bug fix release today for Xmas:

I made this blouse by accident. Clothes have such a natural drape. Stuff is so easy to do clothes become almost disposable.
Further, I first wanted to covert everything I made into conforming clothes, but it soon became apparent that it was a waste of time. Output is perfect for Poser cloth room, which I feared, but this stuff has forced my hand and I'm finally learning the ins and outs.
So I fired off some tight leather pants to go along with the top and thought I'd let you all know...this is a must have. Clothing V4 (and others, i'd think) is now FUN!
