Reg, you've convinced me. From now on, all my characters bearing skin will also receive joint pads to cover up mesh creases!

But they are there for safety reasons not aesthetic. It may also interest people to know that the girls were exported from DS4 (needed collsion detection on the Nun outfit) while everything else was exported from DS3 as the spray tool doesn't work for me in DS4.

Quote - Question for the glass experts. I'm trying something a little different and want to get a window pane for detective's office to read his title and name. I've tried a few approaches to get the texture nice and readable, but now it's reflecting within the glass pane and reads like it is both forward and backward. I'll put up a pic when it gets a little farther on this attempt.

Would an alpha map on the window help separate things?

The cool thing about REALITY is it works like the real world. A sign on a Detective's door in the real world would be painted-on letters one side and/or stickied-on one side. Your letters should be on a separate plane (1 pixel distance) from the "glass" and ALpha mapped and that should solve your problem. And try "architectural glass" if you haven't already.

You should place the texture in the transmission channel of the glass, set the reflection channel to almost oure white, and set the glass to archi. Using an alpha channel with glass is not a good idea, it will make part of the glass disappear. There is no need to use the alpha channel unless you want to create irregular shape glass objects.

Thanks for the replies on the glass issue. I do have the texture in the transmission slot with a reflection of 246 across the board and architectual as the glass setting.

I hadn't thought about doing the plane for it! Good idea! I ended up frosting it for the time being as I tried a few other things in the mean time with the same results. I do plan on doing a fog prop version, so I'll add the plane for the next round

I'm not sure if I'm going to put this right but this is what occurs to me...

Is it possible that your glass object is using the same surface for the front and back of the pane? Thus you are in fact puting the letters on both sides as byproduct of how the object is made? If so the plane in front is going to be the safest way to do it, or finding a window made differently.

Hi guys! Nice to see the Rendo thread is a busy one there are some really nice renders already.

Does anyone have a recipe for Jade? I remember seeing a dragon somewhere that had the precise color I'm looking for.  I think the Stanford Happy Buddha would look a lot better in jade or maybe even bronze than the green glass I tried him in.

This was just a test to see how Lux would handle the 1 million triangles the model contains, I started the render at 1 pm Friday and let it bake over the weekend for 96 hours straight. it was still rendering happily when I came in to work this morning.

Couldn't they test it before going live?  In software that is all we do.  If you find a programmer coding more than 20% of the time, he's incompetant.  Documentation, and testing... is the other 80%.  It seems pretty obvious to me that they had a very poor set of test cases.  (It worked once... Its more like Daz Genius--Tsssssst (injesting puff of weed) I got it man! Lets put out a buggy version of studio and make sure no one can get support for it!!

Its like 2K video hockey if they flush theselves down the drain it will be their own doing. I certainly am not purchasing another item until this is resolved. They are promising a make up for it sale on FB.

Am I understanding this right? They will be charging again for the official studio 4.5??

Not only that if you install 4.5  and decide to go back for some reason it will apperantly mess up your previous saved stuff. I have 2 words to fix that System Restore...

For my needs I can stay with Stuido 3-4 Reality-lUX just fine...

Providing it stays free I may change but not before Reality is compatible and they have an official version..

Judging from their Christmas dinnner pic, the strongest thing they ingest is tonic water.

But I agree that they're making a hash of it all again.

In terms of 4.5, I'm all over it. I did manage to find a computer to install it on and I'm impressed already. Plus there's some exciting developments hidden away in there that I won't be able to get to grips with until I have it on my main frame (highlights in Richard's post here—e.g. geometry shell). But I won't be upgrading until Reality is ready—and maybe Gen X (but I think I can live without that for a while).

Geometry shell is a technology that makes a second copy of a model (e.g. a Genesis or V4 character) which surrounds the original, and at the same time the original is scaled down slightly, so it becomes like a second skin, but so much more versatile. It has its own texture surfaces, so you can set these to add texture effects and blends to the original model. You could use it to make a character glow, add hair, moisture—whatever you might imagine. If you've ever seen Jepe's body jewels and tears, "body hair suit" and tattoo system, it's like that, except much easier to manage as it takes a lot less resources than simply loading another copy of your character. It's also going to be a great help with blending textures with Geografting.

You might have missed the link in my post as they are kind of hard to see here, but there is more explanation of it there:

http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewthread/63/

Like Geografting, I'm pretty sure it's going to inspire some exciting new products.

Tak, there's no time like the present to take advantage of other markets. I've seen the shift here at Rendo towards a more friendly environment towards Daz, which makes me quite happy. A lot of new products are popping up with 'tested in Daz studio...' so don't give up yet! I agree, the new site nonsense was poorly, well, everything, but it'll get sorted as we both know. Hang in there champ. All good things come to those who wait!

If you find a cure for your laziness, give me a shot too. I've been trying to get a new novel done for, uhh, quite a while. Just can't seem to find the drive to get more than a few pages down a month.

Aside from having a wet skin map, gloss of 8500-9100 or higher and a light blue specular color gives the wet/slick look.

As for the render engine, 3Delight is actually a product that you can update separately from here last I checked (around a year ago mind you) http://www.3delight.com/en/index.php

I'm not sure if Daz ever has gone above the 8.x version for Studio, but I have 9.something and its not much different either. You can get pretty good results running the Renderman version but I haven't the foggiest how you go about that. Seen it done, never done it myself. At any rate, it's not Lux

Correction: latest version is 10.4, here http://www.3delight.com/en/index.php?page=3DSP_download

In the nearly fine print, it does say the free version is limited to dual core performance, meaning if you have more than a dual core, it's gonna cost you some bucks to unlock full potential.

Interesting that you should mention the amount of lights with Lux. This morning I checked up on a 3 day render that was turning into a mess of noise which had very adequate light, or so I thought. I wanted to do a fog version, so I ended up killing it. Adding fog and my glass fix, I plugged in a spot for my fog effect and rearranged my mesh for an interior fill. The speed dropped like a rock, but my effeciency went from 115% to 610%! With an added bonus, this version looks better at 95 samples than the other did at 3.15k. I'm now finding that the amount of lights isn't as important as I once thought... Its the quality of the light, which makes perfect sense in Lux.

This one http://fav.me/d4zna8d with 3 mesh lights took only 3 to 4 hours. I tried the one above for heck of it without the converted lights and it too would rendred in a few hours..
