I have to say that although changes to the dynamic clothing since P7 (I think) haven't always been my friend, for skirts and dresses and kilts I've always preferred dynamic myself - it just seems to make more sense. Plus, it can look lovely animated :D

Just a very quick update to the script that changes limits on Genesis to more closely resemble those on V4:

Wow. My Limits script killed the thread? It wasn't THAT bad! ;)

and although the mad rush of the first couple of days is long over, I'm still getting a trickle of a couple of sales every few days even at full price. SR3 is available! And well worth getting IMHO :)

It absolutely does a better job than at least 4 of my scripts, IMHO. Get SR3 - now :)

Couple things I want to clarify before I allocate some time to give DS it's due:

  1. Someone said Genesis is lower poly and doesn't render up close as well as V4.  Is that true?  I often render up to 2500 px wide so I need fidelity for close ups at that resolution.

  2. I use Queue Manager constantly for games; can't live without it, I usually have 100s of frames being rendered in the background.  Does DS have a render queue?

I was the one saying genesis is low poly. DS uses CatMull Clarke Sub Division. When needed it will go to a higher resolution in DS4. Poser uses a different type of smoothing at render time. The two are not the same and can give different results. If you render a closeup of an ear, you will see some unnatural deformation, but it is not too bad overall. For normal face closeups it is acceptable.

Regarding Queue manager in DS - Go to the DAZ Studio forum and get your answer there. The Poser forum is not the place to get advice about Studio

It's quite true - Genesis IS a lowER resolution mesh. Here's some stats for you:

Victoria 4

vertices = 68498

facets = 66830

materials = 29

Genesis

vertices = 19296

facets = 18872

materials = 26

This DOES result in lower quality renders close-up. this can only be slightly mitigated by turning mesh smoothing on, and even tweaking the mesh can't completely hide the fact that it is lower resolution (the ears being a particular problem). I'll attach a comparison render of V4 and Genesis both wearing V4's default texture.

The Queue manager is brilliant, and network rendering using Poser is vital to me. DAZ Studio doesn't have a render queue as far as I've been able to find. Such a feature has been requested repeatedly.

This image should show the difference in polygon density - and should even highlight how most of the density on v4 doesn't really add much to the character. I think that if Genesis had just a little more definition in selected areas it would be much harder to tell the two figures apart.

Hi Cliff,

I have your tutorial but haven't managed to put it into practise yet. Has SR3 altered the workflow significantly if I follow the tutorial? Anything specific I need to beware of?

Not really - towards the end of the workflow there's a few scripts I wrote to make the joint origin on clothing match the joint origin of the Genesis figure, as those joints can (do!) move between different "characters". That wasn't working before SR3 (which is why I wrote the scripts to do it) but now there's an option in the Properties of the Body of the conformers to tell Poser to do that work. IMO it seems to do a slightly better job than my scripts did for still images, but for animations it blows my scripts out of the water - as my scripts could not aniamte the joint centres at all.

 

I am toying with the idea of adding a new script to set this property on all conformers for a selected Genesis figure, but haven't gotten around to playing with that yet. hopefully the DAZ Studio .CR2 exporter will be updated to automatically include that property "soo..." anyway ;)

Glad I could help.

 

Personally, I don't think Genesis is best judged against V4 (or against V3 or David or The Girl or The Troll or...) but on it's own merits. Because if one wants V4 - well, we already have it. I think Genesis is much better at being Genesis than it is at being V4, and V4 is much better at being V4 than it is at being The Troll ;) (I also tend to think that the origianl the Girl is better at being The Girl than V4 is ;) )

 

For example - here's V4 with smoothing turned off (so showing the actual mesh) and V5 with smoothing turned on (showing it as close to "as intended" as Poser does with it), side-by-side and using the same texture:

Although neither Genesis nor V5 were actually designed for Poser, I personally think that V5 (designed not for Poser, but for Genesis) looks better than Genesis-as-V4. That blck line actually only appears when the character is smoothed, so it may be possible to light it better to get better results. I'm afraid I'm not much of one for postwork so I hesitate to suggest using postwork to smooth out that one area - but to me the eyes and lips also look much improved over the "V4 clone" look.

Look lively! DAZ have released an importer for DSON files that make for a much better experience. It's currently free but I've no idea when (or if) that will change.

I'd also appreciate feedback over whether it would be politic to remove my tutorial from the marketplace to avoid confusion, or whether there are people still using DS 4 with Poser that might benefit from it remaining available. I'd rather avoid confusion but at the same time I don't want legitimate users unable to get it if they want it.

The new importer addon does an excellent job. It not only works with a sibdivided genesis, but it also takes care of poses, expressions and other support files. The fitting also seems to be better as we were able to do with the conversion tools

As you said, it still is useful for those who use DS4 and Poser, but I think that will fade away as well since all DAZ content will probably move to DSON which is not supported in DS4. But I assume that those DS4 users who are interested in it, already have it. New users of the DS4/Poser?genesis combination will probably start with DS4.5 and Poser SR3

So I think you can probably retire it

but you could write a new tutorial for people with poser and new to DS, telling us exactly what the best way to do it would be. I notice a bit of confusion and complaints about the DAZ instructions here in the forums.

I think I'd rather produce an "addendum" type document to accompany the existing .PDf, if I can be brief enough. I'm a touch busy right now, but give me a yell if I don't come up with a comment by NEXT weekend maybe?

Argh. I hadn't thought about when they put the price up - though "with subdivision" is going to produce MUCH better results than "without subdivision". Though that looked like it was getting some promising attention from snarly. Definitely need an update to the product page then, at minimum. Though of course DAZ could always stop providing the .CR2 exporter - that'd kill the "economy route" stone dead :(

 

Thanks for the food for thought. I tend to make snap decisions, but I'm trying really hard this time not to do that :) (the decision to write the tut in the first place was a snap decision, for example!).

As for stopping to provide the .cr2 provider: not that fast. It is needed for content creation in DazStudio for making content that works in older versions of Poser too.

I don't think they will do that (I think, Daz ... ehm, talk about snap decisions LOL)

I think the genesis exporting portion of the exporter can be removed since the DSON importer goes way beyond what this option did. Also you shouldn't use that genesis cr2 for any type of content development. But yeah I think the actual cr2 exporting is safe.

I believe if you put Genesis in the name then it reverts to a type of Poser 9 (weightmapped). Otherwise, it uses Poser 7 format.
