All this talk about high- and low resolution combined with PP2014's subdivision feature made me curious to see what could be done with some of the legacy Poser stuff.

So I brought out Posette :)

And I think she looks rather nice. The eyes are still ... Posette-ish but I smoothed the nose and lips a little with the morph brush and IMO that helped a lot.

So the old figures can still be used, if nothing else then as to serve a point ;)
The texture is one of Ståle Løseth's, not the Vickybuster but another one I found in the deep dark drawers of my P4 runtime L She's wearing the old halterneck dress with BB's nylon shader where I dialed the transparency down a bit. It's still a little see-through, but well G

Any thoughts? :)

(ps the pic looks better in full size, so by all means, give it a little click L)

Looks very nice.  Proves my point that there's no need to flock to every new figure when it's released because there's life in the old ones yet.

I wouldn't say Posette is the best figure ever but with the right techniques and tools, it's a very useful figure to have around.

Would weightmapping solve the splintery ass problem?

Most likely. I just havent' a clue as to how I go about converting this to a weight mapped figure. I did click "something" that said somethng about convert.. but as I'm not quite sure what weightmapping can and does.. well.. she may be weightmapped not (although I seriously doubt it) but since all I really bend was her arm, and that looked as bad as ever L I dunno if her ass is better now L

I've kinda always liked Posette for female characters... probably because she was my first L

I'm rendering a new version of the pic btw. Because I've tried to subdivide the dress as well, so that may either be an improvement or do nothing at all L I'll post it once it's done.

Oh and btw I "stole" the node setup for her skin from Blackhearted's GND for Alyson. Because I really like the way it looks. And in such cases its really nice that the P4 people is "one map" figures. It makes it so much easier to substitute their skin with other versions, also during a "testing what looks best" phase.

The biggest problem is of course the dire lack of proper hig rez photoreal textures for those old figures. But I have a few, and I'm using them to death L

heh the render finished just as I clicked Send.

so here's version 2, where I also dubdivided the dress (x2, the max Poser will do without warning me about lots of polygons L)

Well, much to my surprise, the dress actually looks better non-subdivided.

And even more interesting it "draped"differently (using "draped" in quotation marks because this is a comforming dress) once subdivided. And not necessarily to the better.

So at least in this case, it's a "less is more" thing. But look for yourselves :)

Nice render, Trekkie.

Modern technologie sure can do a lot for those older figures.

If you want to try out weightmapping, Posette sure would make a great starting project.

Here's a Posette morph I made some time ago, but rendered in PP-2014 using SSS and subdivision.

In Poser 2014, weight mapping is a 1-click operation.

Go to the Menu Bar - Figure - Merge all zones to weight maps.

That is all there is to it.

I weight mapped every figure I own in less time than it took me to weight map Rikishi in PP 2012.

As far as the "splintery ass problem" - neither weighmapping or subdivision appear to address everything.   I weight mapped Posette & went to "3" on the subdivision for the entire figure (I don't recommend this without serious horsepower & memory.)

The glutes are not anywhere near as "lumpy", but you would still need to spend time with the smoothing brush.

If someone make high rez meshes for older figures, I'd buy them in a heartbeat - with weight mapping, the morph brushes, and the fitting room, all of those characters are viable again.

Thanks to those 3 items, I now have Eroko working the brig in my Trek fan fiction - she works quite well at subdivision 2 for the head, neck, chest & collars.

Left David 3 default, middle David 3 "one click weightmapped", right David 3 after weeks of hand-editing weightmaps.

That "Merge All Zones to Weightmaps" button is complete nonsense.

All it does is do the raw "conversion" which only makes the cr2 bigger without adding any bending benefit.

"Weightmapping" a figure means to make use of the better granularity weightmaps can provide by carefully editing weight-and bulgemaps.

Basically you have to re-rig the figure from scratch as the only thing you can keep from the old rigging are the joint centers.

And it's a good idea to only "merge" those joints to weightmaps you actually plan to rig, because that way the cr2 will be smaller and load faster.

So, do not simply "convert" your figures to "weightmaps".

It will give you zero benefit and actually harm their performance.

Do the conversion joint by joint while you edit the weightmaps.

nobodyinparticular ( ) posted Mon, 01 July 2013 at 5:27 AM

I tried the "one click" method shortly after I got PP 2014. I agree, I didn't see any real improvement. Are there any good tutorials on proper weight mapping? I've been using a number of older characters. Been trying to rid myself of the V4 habit. Rather successfully so far.

-Timberwolf- ( ) posted Mon, 01 July 2013 at 6:44 AM

@JoePublic: darn, where is the "Like" button, when you urgently need one.

PhilC ( ) posted Mon, 01 July 2013 at 7:21 AM

I use the "one click" just to provide me with a starting point for weight mapping then fine tune each joint as required.

randym77 ( ) posted Mon, 01 July 2013 at 7:22 AM

Dang.  I'd hardly recognize ol' Posette.  Makes me want to dust her off and try her in modern Poser.  Very nice work!

JoePublic ( ) posted Mon, 01 July 2013 at 8:14 AM

"I use the "one click" just to provide me with a starting point for weight mapping then fine tune each joint as required."

@PhilC:

Yes, but unless you plan to edit each and any joint, this does more harm than good as a weightmap uses up more space than a spherical falloff zone.

Fingers are usually perfectly ok, so there is not much need to weightmap them.

So the "one click" button just adds 30 additional weightmaps to the figure that aren't really needed.

As a unedited weightmap gives no bending improvement whatsoever over conventional rigging, this is no actual "starting point" either.

All it does is saving you the three mouseclicks you need to merge the falloff zones directly in the joint editor.

It's convenient, but it creates weightmaps that aren't needed.

And it confuses beginners by suggesting that PP-2014 could "auto-weightmap" every figure for you with a single click.

The "merge all zones at once" functionality is actually needed for some scripts, but exposing it in the GUI is a mistake.

But I can only explain and demonstrate. What people do with their copy of Poser is their own buisiness.

:-)

@nobodyinparticular : Sorry, no tuts what I know of except the videos on YouTube. My suggetion would be, the more comfortable you are with using the MorphBrush, the easier weightmapping will be for you.

@-Timberwolf- : Thanks !

@TrekkieGrrrl : May I suggest to use SnarlyGribbly's EZSkin to generate proper SSS shaders ?

Or manually edit the scatter-zones to avoid the "SSS-Blueing" of the mouth and other bodyparts.

Whenever two parts of the mesh with the same scatter-zone number are in close contact, the SSS-algorithm adds a blue tinge.

This can easily be avoided by assigning different scatter-zone numbers.

Looking good. There should be enough Posette remaps out there to help with the texture situation.

EnglishBob ( ) posted Mon, 01 July 2013 at 8:59 AM

The Poser 4 clothing is made rather differently from modern stuff. In particular, they're "solid", and the back of the halterneck is filled in with long, thin triangles, which may possibly be related to your subdivision problems?

Posette is looking good, indeed; although I bet her super-long thighs are not so easy to fix. :)

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Mon, 01 July 2013 at 3:21 PM

Joe Public: I love that face morph you made there. Is it available anywhere? (read: I WANT IT! ;)) Also what texture is that?

Posette remaps? Where? What? How?

As for EZSkin, it just tells me that Posette is an unsupported character. And since I have no idea of how the script works, I do not know how to add a new figure (just as I never figured out how to add another figure to VSS)

And that was why I simply "borrowed" Blackhearted's node setup from GND Anastacia and manually swapped all the material references with the right texture. I don't know how Blackhearted made his setup, but so far I prefer it to both VSS and (what I've managed to make with) EZSkin.

Then again.. I'm good at copying and pasting ;) And not good at understanding the reasons why a certain node is wired the way it is. It's math. And math makes my brain run away and hide.

Everybody is praising EZSkin, so I'm SURE it's just me using it wrong... But as I have no idea of what do change (or in this case, how to tell it to apply its magic to Posette) I'm in the dark. So I "cheat" and borrow from whatever looks nice ;)

Thanks Trekkie.

It's DPHoadley's V3 remapped Posette and the texture is based on Goldtassel's "Millenium Dollar Baby", but it's modified quite a bit.

You can edit EZSkin to add figures, but of course "copy and paste" is fine, too.

You just have to enter the material room and find the scatter node.

Make sure that teeth and eyes have different scatter group numbers assigned than the skin. For example if skin is #1, then teeth should be #2, eyeballs#3, nails #4, etc.

Most older SSS shaders don't do that, so you get the "blueing".

As for the head morph, I sent you a sitemail.

Arduino's Sophia P4WWG Cr2 hacked by me to my PosetteV3wG. Mylocha hair and Panko's Viet Cong V3 skin texture. Background is a Daz Curtain prop, and various vases, some of them freebies, and some not.

Quote - Sorry your partner disappeared.  Hope it is nothing serious.

It was more than serious, it was devastating! -especially as it was abrupt, and without any discussion whatsoever on possible solutions as to whatever may have been wrong!  To this day, I still haven't a clue as to what might have caused the rift!

Quote - As to the product, how does it compare from a technical standpoint with your PosetteV3wG (PosetteV3 with Genitals) found here?

PosetteV3, without genitals, is my 1st remap of Posette.  PosetteV3wG has a long history.  The Posette Genital figure was originally created by Hellborn for the Poser 3 version of Posette.  He took the hip, and added a nuber of facets so as to create a cleft, outer and inner left & right labia, and a clitoris.  He also created a small anus.  Someone took this hip, cut out the gentials, and then spliced them  into the Poser 4 Posette's hip.  Somehow, they also managed to transfer the morphs that work the various parts of the genital, thus giving Posette a working 'Whatsit'!

The drawback to this is that NONE of Posette's 'regualr' hip morph will work with this version of Posette!  ALL OTHER MORPHS WILL, BUT NOT THOSE OF THE HIP!!!!!

Thus, Pitklad's Nea morphs will work on PosetteV3wG will work on her fore every OTHER body part, (Breasts, abdomen, thighs, shins, fingernails, toes, etc.) but not the hip.  But the morphs that DO work on the hip are those that open and close the vagina, the anus, lengthen the clitoris, spread the labia, etc.

So, it's a trade off, working whatsit, or more morphable hip shape.  You take your choice!  Myself, I like her hip just as it is, and prefer to have the working whatsit!!!

I will probably get both, then, as I have no plans to use a working whatsit but might later on.

Hairy women :barf:

TBH, I don't even care for a landing strip nowadays.  Besides which, I don't like impersonating a cat* after spending some quality time with a lady.

No offense DPH and I know I shouldn't ask but cudja knock back the fontsize on your political statement to something a bit less real estate intensive. I know, I'll go away.

Hey, Sam, you're the one who called into question as to whether my wife, in her pristine state of nature, was a lady or not!! -as for impersonating a cat, what else was I supposed to assume? -licking fur, playing cat&mouse with danglely objects, finding new and engenious ways to open my kitchen cabinets and steal snacks*?

*my pet cat actually DOES that!!!
