Subject: Reality Render thread. A new beginning.

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2013 at 6:04 PM

Yes, the news about Dawn are very exciting. A new figure that has great expressions, advanced rigging (individual toes!), it's simple to use, native for both Studio and Poser, free, and with support by the wide range of vendors.

I said it before but it's worth repeating: this is the most important figure development since the original V4.

Cheers.

Paolo, if you are liberty to say, what kind of support for Dawn will you be able to include with Reality?

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2013 at 9:58 PM

I still have to get my hands on the model but I want to add support for its materials so that it will render gorgeously right out of the box.

We are also planning a little extra with HiveWire but I'll let them announce it at the right time.

It's gonna be fun!

V4 has been that faithful old car with high mileage for me, but heck, how can you argue with a new model when you practically win it!

Speaking of things to look forward to, how's that other version of Reality 3 going?

Does it become more advantageous to buy Poser 10 and convert yourself rather than buy reworks of items you may already own?

I agree, i have no interest in "purchasing" mesh that has been "conformed" to fit another figure thru the poser interface. When mesh conforms to a different figure (or an extreme morph) it distorts and unless it is remapped to compensate for this distortion, it won;t look as good as a mesh that is designed and mapped specifically for the intended figure. Don't get me wrong, I think the new fitting room is great and very useful, just on the user level only and not as a tool for a vendor to use.

Dawn does look good, I am hoping for some good morph support as that has always kept me from supporting other figures. Seeing who is in charge makes me pretty confident though. I got a note from Ken after he pulled his birds out of DAZ telling me about the new site, so I plan on supporting them as much as i can.

First serious V6 render.

BradHP ( ) posted Thu, 27 June 2013 at 1:17 PM

A little off topic, but does anyone use iclone?  Was watching some videos and it looks like it's very easy to bring Daz content over with the latest version, and then you can do Mocap with a Kinect.

I hate the animation in Daz, so I was wondering about doing it in iclone then bringing it back to Daz to render through Reality.

superboomturbo ( ) posted Thu, 27 June 2013 at 2:01 PM · edited Thu, 27 June 2013 at 2:03 PM

Hey Brad,

I've been doing loooong animations runs from Studio to Lux through Reality for the last few months (over 3200 frames through Lux; the project keeps getting bigger!!) and looked at several options outside of Daz. iClone is a great product, but its fairly expensive. Last I looked it was around $600. MoCap sucks balls in Daz, regardless of whether you use bvh files or import through something like brekel (another alternative without some of the cool features in iClone. Its more specific to mocap). Daz is bad at reading the xyz coords and usually makes characters look like pretzels flying off across your monitor. Humorus but a big time waster.

I ended up activating my animate2 code which turns out to be pretty useful. You can save some time if you horde poses like me (string them together and tweak as needed) and up the frame rate a bit to add extra 'tweening' frames to smooth the motion, then edit the frame rate to your liking in a video editor of choice (for instance, I have one sequence where the frames are displayed for .03 seconds per frame to .08 and back to .05 seconds; easy slow-mo). I've got a run-jump-land aniblock sequence I'll upload to sharecg to pretty soon.

Add: The infamous Carnegie-Melon MoCap files are all over the net, and if you look, there's a few that have been edited for Poser/Studio. They still need to be cleaned up even more, but some are good for learning with nonetheless. I found it more time-efficient to just animate my own versus reworking the hundreds of botched bvh files.

Nope. Those are individual hairs.  .003" wide to be exact.  The render save without hair, is 100MB... with hair, 600MB.  A lot of polygons....

Ooooohh Paolo!  I've got a quickie (or two) for you. I'm on the last leg of the animation project and have run into a few issues. First one, I'm not sure if its just weird issues going on, but it seems that Reality's Animation command gets tripped up in the folder name if there are too many redirects

example: C:UsersCrimson WorksDocumentsRPGP Action Files DGNcharacter defaultsMechaNation concept art LuxMechaNation trailersandman run jump framesland and stand/land and stand_###.lxs

I know it looks ridiculous, but it helps keep thousands of frames organized when each sequence has its own folder. Anyway, I'm not sure it its because a folder repeats the name, but I've also noticed when I put numbers in the location line before it gets to ___.lxs, the export part stalls out on the first frame.

Number two is probably more straightforward. Where in the scene file can one edit Lux properties like the Color Space's other properties like the D65/9300K etc. I see the whitepoint part but I haven't a clue what these others look like. Again, it's mostly to mass edit lxs's to keep the frames consistent from inception.

Thanks as always!

By the way, would you mind if I put the Reality logo in the opening credits? Lux is getting a few frames too. :-)

SBT, the name of the files is probably just hitting the maximum length for a file name. Even though we has a lot of latitude today, there is a limit to the file length. Other than that I would not know.

The color temperature doesn't need to be edited in the lxs file, that can be set in the Reality light editor. For the rest you need to look in the Film section. You can find the details on each parameter in the Lux Wiki.

Thank you for the credit, it's very much appreciated.

Cheers.

Windows path name limit is 32000 characters, with each segment allowed a max of 255.

You could always export the files to a top level directory and move them after export.

Thank you both. I noticed that moving them up two folders fixed it. Doh!

On the Color space preset, can you use any of those directly through Reality? I know there's the Kelvin color but it's only for mesh lights, right? (i through a sun in with the IBL and oddly enough Lux is running faster, not slower, and I get shadows! yea!!) I was hoping to find something that affects the entire scene (and all frames) without having to go into the lxs or the Lux panel, as some of these runs are several hundred frames each.

I think I know what you mean Paolo. I've been trying to get the whole scene to appear a certain blend of colors for a futuristic cityscape and right now I'm doing it with IBL and a enviro color as well as the 050cd film response. While doing the solo test image, I was playing with all of these and then found that some of those presets looked quite snazy.

Edit; Disregard; I just found my answer. Even the presets abide on the x/y scale. Makes life easier! I'll have to go hunting for a chart ;-)

SBT, as a general approach color correction is done in post, after editing. I use After Effects for that but severla NLEs provide some sort of color correction. That approach is more flexible and it allows you to try different solutions.

I always suggest to generate images that are as neutral as possible. It makes the job of color correction easier.

good luck.

Thank you again, Paolo. I'm learning this part as I go!  I downloaded Lightworks a few weeks ago but haven't discovered all the bells and whistles yet. Its definitely pro-level stuff, which admittedly, I am not! After Effects is the gold standard, but they're charging an awful lot for it these days! Ahh, all's well. Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Sun, 07 July 2013 at 10:02 PM

Hi Brad.

Glad that you found our dA gallery. Amethyst/Kim is now handling the Social Media presence so thank goes to her for the great job of spreading the word.

The secret to make hair more realistic is to break the surface. Since the hair prop is not made of individual strands it naturally lends to be rendered as a solid surface, which gives the "helmet" look that you mentioned.

Hair is fairly glossy, see all the shampoo commercials, so you want the glossiness/specular color to be fairly high.

Then you need a good bump map and crank it up, way up. I generally get it around -0.004/0.004 or around there with strength at 100%.

Hope this helps.

You break the surface with the high bump map. A nor al map would do as well. The only issue there is that you can't control the intensity of the NM easily. You need to redefine the NM in programs like CrazyBump.
