DAZ|Studio F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 09 6:27 pm)
Hi pobble.
Please consider following the official Reality forums, at RuntimeDNA. I have a thread there about the development of Reality 3 for DAZ Studio.
I generally don't give dates until the program is ready to be released. I am working on that as hard as possible but I want to release a stable and fully-featured program. In my experience giving date is only detrimental of quality so I don't do that. I know that waiting is not fun but this is the best that I can do at this time.
Please follow the development in the official forum, I post news there as often as I can.

Relax and enjoy your weekend like we all do Paolo : )
Another Victoria6 texture 'catalog' item: Olivia for V5, also by Raiya.
This being a darker skin I was surprised that the render settings I used for the others worked as well as they did for this one.
A preview version can be seen here:

And here's Leah V5 on Victoria 6 (also by Raiya):

That's all the textures I have that will fit V6, but if you've seen really good (realistic) textures for G2-V6 I'd sure like to hear about it.
Cheers!

Erik,
Will these be for sale? I really like this on a lot!
Sharky, or anyone else who has used the GPU's Hybrid function, have you had issues with Lux failing to close when aborting a render, which then crashes Studio? I'm on 1.2.1 of Lux's release (or 1.3 on the official record). I've been getting some impressive runs but wondered if anyone else was seeing the same.

Stunning work!! I haven't had the time or inclination to even try dawn out, but you are doing a great job for both of us.

Quote - I'm certainly happy some reality users have been posting pictures of Dawn. Certainly solidifies my decisions on her. She seems to be a good idea gone wrong. Who knows, maybe in four or five years she'll be as common as V4; but, I just don't have the spare cash to be an early-adopter or unpaid beta tester. I've been pretty quiet around her because I've gone back to using poser full-time since the release of R3 and Poser 2014. I had forgotten just how flexible and how much of a joy it was to work with V4 and Poser. Not to mention the thousands of dollars I have in V4 content. True, studio has its autofit and that was one of the selling points for me; but, now that there's the tighten/loosen fit morph tool as well as the droop morph tool, I doubt that I'll ever go back to studio unless they toss that idiotic d-form and go for more vertex morphing tools like poser has.
That being said.. I see plenty keeping the faith with the DS/R2.5/Lux route and am seeing a ton of fantastic renders on DA. For those of you who haven't used R3 yet; you're in for a treat.
Funny, I had more joy working with V4 in DS, still do, LOL.
Having been a long time poser user well before DS, I am just the opposite, which is partly the reason I haven't done much lately, just not getting along well with the R3 UI and I feel like I am going backwards with poser again. That and the genesis2 fiasco at Daz, just feels like to much work jumping thru hoops.
Luckily I got a bunch of commercial work for one of the games I develop for and that has me pretty busy, so glad to see you have a workflow that works for you, best of luck!

Yes, it is a pain. But, as you said, worth it. Some are easier than others. Very nice Erik.
Thanks Doc!
Hey, I've learned a new trick today: converting UV maps using DAZ Studio's 'Map Transfer Utility'. Didn't even know it was there before I accidentally stumbled upon a discussion about it on the DAZ forum. I'm now rendering a test with M5 Benjamin textures on Victoria 6, and does she look sweet with them on! There's still sooooo much to learn.....
Cheers!

Looking good! Do you have a link to the discussion at DAZ? I know one can use V4 maps with the help of a product in the DAZ store, but via Map Transfer Utility sounds good.

Ooh, I'll have to see if I can find it again.
In the mean time there's this tutorial by SickleYield on DA:

It's the answer by DAVIDGB, posted: 25 May 2013
For convenience I'll quote him here (hoping that's okay with him):
Quote - Many people don’t realise this, but DS already contains a tool to convert textures between different UV sets that the same figure has.
For example, let’s say you have an M4 texture set you want converting to the M5 UVs, In DS, if you have Genesis with the M4 and M5 UVs (of course you get the Genesis M4 UVs with the basic content, but get the M5 UVs by buying M5) you simply use the ‘Map transfer’ command in the surfaces menu, and DS will convert the M4 textures to the M5 mapping (that is, DS generates new jpegs of the textures, with the textures transformed, like with Textyre Converter 2 etc).
DS has actually had this function since DS3 and pre Genesis. If, in DS3, you were to load V4, say, then select the M4 obj as an alternate UV set for the V4, DS would convert V4 textures to M4 UV mapping and vice versa. The simple requirement for DS to convert textures from one UV mapping to another is that one figure (or prop) must have both the UVs to convert from and to available for it. With Genesis, of course, that means textures can be converted by DS between the V4, M4, V5, M5, A5, S5, H5, F5 UVs, plus those for the various Genesis custom creatures that come with separate custom UV mapping. But Genesis is not itself a requirement, just that a single figure or prop has both UV sets available for it.

Anybody tried LuxRender 1.3RC2 yet?
@Erik: You could name her Erikana :)
By the way, I thought Paolo mentioned splitting this thread, or creating a new one. Any news on that?

Doesn't take any extra produce to use V4 maps on V5 and above.. you just have to change the uv map settings in the material editor
No 'Wimmin' in this one, just a test image really.
Surprisingly difficult to get sea water to look like, well, sea water.
It is nice and black, but those waves still are far too smooth.
I tried to get a ripple in, like tiny waves IN or ON the larger ones, but so far didn't quite succeed.
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/media/folder_248/file_2473863.jpg
Reality's procedural water surface didn't work at all in this case, so I modeled a mesh in Rhino using a grey scale map. To this (high res and subdivided) ondulating mesh I added a bump map in Reality with a much finer wave pattern, but in this render that did not give me the look I'm after. (the lighthouse and rock are merely there to help get a sense of the scale).
Any useful suggestions to improve it are welcome of course! : )
Cheers!

hmmm.. . a cheater way of making a workable realistic looking bump/dsp map would be to do a websearch for a overhead ocean wallpaper.. context fill anything in it that isn't water and then turn the results into a bump map.
The bump map not working was my own stupid fault, I forgot to generate a UV map for my water surface : )
For the ripples-bump map I used the same grey-scale map as the one I used to make the waves (in Rhino), but I first made it nine times smaller and then tiled + rotated it.
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/media/folder_248/file_2474269.jpg
It is beginning to look a bit like I wanted it to, but it renders extremely slow and consumes an enormous amount of RAM, so there's a lot of room for improvement!
Cheers!
Erik
I like the (oil) rig? Where does that come from?
Hopefully R3 will have an improved water render option, same for fog, smoke, etc.
Quote - I like the (oil) rig? Where does that come from?
It was made by Mario Amaya (aptly titled 'oil-platform'), and can be found (for free) on GrabCAD. Renderosity doesn't allow direct URL's to stuff, so you'll have to do a search for it. Mario and his brother Luis Amaya have a LOT of great oil-rig stuff on GrabCAD, but it's all 3D AutoCAD dwg's, hardly any ready-to-render STL-meshes. I use Rhino to turn those dwg's into OBJ's, but I can't publish them since those models are not mine.
The boat is by Filippo Citati, also to be found on GrabCAD, but I had to do quite a bit of repairs before I could render it. It doesn't have any textures, so it looks a bit bland and toy-like, but it does what it was meant to do I think.
Cheers!
Erik

The water displacement in Reality 3 is completely configurable. It gives you 6 presets and you can customize all the parameters of the preset.

Bob, I don't know what you mean about "better support," I give the same level of attention to every venue. Please let me know if there are standing issues.
The fact is, even today I didn't receive any notifications. I saw the last two messages because I remembered to check. If the software doesn't send notifcations then it's no surprise that people don't come back.

Indeed! Tuning up my modeling skills on the cast. A certain figure with the initials 'LB' is giving my all kinds of issues. I'll get him straightened out, save it, then all my weight maps disappear. I've redone them soooo many times now that I'm ready to abandone him...
Sorry for the frustration rant! Like your new avatar Paolo; kinda looks like a Super Paolo emblem =D
