Subject: a lot of stuff sold is to pretty, clean, perfect with unacceptable textures.

RorrKonn ( ) posted Fri, 21 February 2014 at 11:09 PM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 5:34 AM

90% of the textures are not acceptable.

Castles walls are a perfect 90 degree angles with the nosiest textures.

Trash cans are modeled perectly ,not a single dent. with a to clean texture or a bad attempt at dirty.

clean bars with perfect chairs ,counter.not in the real world.

clean industrial plant.never

cloths & foot wear kills me ,there always so pretty and perfect.
I can only take so much pretty cloths ,need rags.
where's my muddy scuffed boots ?

no blood stains on armor or swords

I could go on & on but I'll stop.

I think stuff would sell better with decent textures.

I think there's a market just selling descent textures.for a lot of the stuff.
Maybe some of the venders could just make desent textures for new releases.
It's easy fast money.

What kind of dirt? New, but dusty? New, but muddy? Old and grimy? Old and muddy? Old and worn? Old and worn but clean? Scuffed and dirty? Scuffed but clean? How much dirt is enough? How much is too much? The possibilities are endless.

Adding dirt to a texture in your image editing software of choice is easy enough and it means you can add the type of dirt you want exactly where you want it.

Making a separate dirt layer and combining it with your texture in the material room allows even more flexibility.

Poser user (1) needs a new clean trash can but the only one sold is dirty and bent.

Poser user (2) needs a dirty and bent trash can but the only one sold is new and clean.

Whereas Poser user (2) could use their 3D artistic skill to dirty up the clean can, user (1) would have to do a lot of work to clean up theirs.

Are you a Poser user or a 3D artist?

piersyf ( ) posted Sat, 22 February 2014 at 3:25 AM

The morph tool. Instant dents in trash cans. Or magnets if the geometry is more complex. Heck, with bullet physics now you could even animate the dent going into the can from someone's head!

The lack of ideal product is what motivates me to learn more about 3D stuff to make my own.

Detail is unique and tied to one situation or personality.  It's the same with houses or cars.  A house with murals on every wall, or a car with lots of bumper stickers and decals, is much harder to sell than a plain neutral unit. You can always paint your own murals and add your own bumper stickers.

Look through the Clearance section of the Marketplace to get an idea of what doesn't sell very well.  You'll see a lot of highly detailed and personalized texture sets.

Once you get used to the idea and realise that the tools you need are right there in Poser, 'imperfecting' all sorts of things can become anything from a trivial task to a rewarding creative endeavour.

So stop whining and being lazy. Get off your backside and go and mess up a trash can.

wreaking ball is on sell 50% off.Think it's textured well ?

Think the sledge hammer is modeled well ?

Think StoneMason or AreySoul would have had textures like that ?

Think another vender could sell texture packs for it ?

That is why Genetica is so great - you can grunge up any texture with it and make lovely dirt. For the perfect straight-edged models, try a procedural 3d texture in the displacement node.

If you do not like something then do not purchase it.

You always have the option to create it yourself to a standard that is acceptable to you.

NanetteTredoux you have no idea how bad I want all the venders to have
Genetica ,DDO ,Photoshop ,zBrush etc etc.
They spend there time Modeling,Mapping there meshes and when there 10 yards from a touchdown they drop the ball with there textures.
Then they get disappointed and frustrated buy bad sells.

This thread is not about me.As lazy as I am ;) I can still make and texture anything I want.

As I was going threw the shop I was thinking that would probably sell better with better textures and a selection of textures. All I'm doing is sharing a thought

Actually, most aren't even able to catch the ball in the first place, as they can't be bothered to model using proper reference.

That's so sad. There are cars out there with AMAZING detail, but because they were eyeballed without any reference, there isn't even one correct shape or dimension on them.

They don't even look at least "toon-" or "toy-like".

They look just weird and wrong and ugly to anyone knowing how the original is supposed to look.

Just because the modeller couldn't be bothered to spend 30 minutes googling some reference pics and loading them into his modelling app.   :-(

And of course stuff like this is almost impossible to fix. You can just as well start from scratch and build your own (correct) version.

Which I quite often do.

Or use a game mesh, which are usually of much higher quality when it comes to realism.

There are also a lot of free meshes around that are of better quality than comparable for sale meshes.

Guess if people model "for the love of it" they don't care spending more time to get "everything just right".

I've never had anything in the stores.but If I did depend on DAZ Poser sells to pay bills.

Say I sold
A trash can.it would have multiple textures clean ,dirty ,filthy and morphs for dents.

A castle would have multiple textures and a crack or two.

boots multiple textures including scuffs n dirt.

I would compare my stuff to the best CGI Artist out there and if mine was not worthy to set with there's.I would keep working till it was.

I did subdivide her. 😉

Venders go threw the trouble of learning how to model, rig, weight, map, texture. Yea they do, but they don't just stop and say 'stuff it, that'll do', instead they undertake a long constant process of learning and improving. Of course sellers - and freebie makers - want to make quality work, not just to increase sales but because they have a pride in their work. Equally theres loads of differences twixt software and versions, so 100% perfection is never possible, so I think it's unfair to say sellers are dropping the ball. Also who defines whats a good standard, you, me, store staff? Maybe even the community discussing the subject here? Perhaps like shvrdavid says ..."How would you rate what you made?"... you might even like to post someone of your work here? After all as you're saying things have room for improvement, why not show us how to improve them?

You're flattering me, but I just have average modelling skills.  :-)

I just don't understand that people that obviously know how to model don't take the time to load one or two reference pics before they start.

Even if you try to make a fantasy item, a few sketches usually help keeping the desired "look". If you start eyeballing, inevitably something will be off in the end and then it's usually too late to correct it.

Finished prop.

I spent about 30 minutes searching reference pics on google and about 10 seconds to load two of them into Wings.

I could have never gotten this specific design "right" just by eyballing it.

Two Spifires: (Not made by me) :-)

The one on top sports a simple "clean" texture, the bottom one has a professionally "weathered" one, looking a lot more realistic.

Look how the "weathering" and "aging" follows the panel lines. You simply cannot do something like that in Poser. You need exceptional photoshop skills to do this, which most Poser users don't have.

It's also very hard to add proper weathering on top of a simple jpg. Much easier to do it if you have access to the "layered" photoshop file.

The top Spitfire was a freebie and otherwise is really excellent, so I'm not complaining.

But if both were for sale for the same price, which one do you think I'd pick ?

Even a simple trashbin isn't so easy to weather in a realistical manner.

See how Stonemason put most of the wear on the sharp corners. There is dirt building up at the bottom. There are streaks of grime running down from the upper corner.

There is lots and lots of stuff going on.

You can't just tell people to apply a "rust" or "dirt" shader in Poser and expect realistic results.

This has to be done by someone who really knows what he's doing.

See also the link to some examples of aged and weathered scale models to see how complicated that process is.

at home , if I was making a 2010 chevy camaro.I'd goggle till I had references .jpgs

The Spitfires are a good exsample of best textures get sells.

You can get the bottom Spitfires and StoneMason texture out of Gimp.
Just half to use 2000x2000 might get 3kx3k,4kx4k pixels sheets.

StonMasons trash can is also a good exsample of the mesh not matching the texture.
the texture is old and worn.but the mesh is perfect like it's new.

RorrKonn is quite right, and I don't think he should have to show off a portfolio of work in order to have his opinion taken seriously. :D

Product quality and sales suffer when people rely on the "if you don't like it, shut up and do it yourself" attitude that is so prevalent.

I bought this (and M4's version) immediately because it really stood out from the crowd.

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/canvas-shoes-and-socks-for-v4/95634/#

If it had included a medium level of wear and tear -- basic imperfect soles like you'd see on shoes that were actually walked in -- it would have been even more outstanding, but since it does include a dirty/torn texture, I'll have a lot more luck combining elements of that with a cleaner one in Photoshop than starting completely from scratch.

He also has a few other "worn" textured products. I suppose only the vendor knows whether or not this style of product sells well. It might well be worth the extra work to produce this sort of thing. I simply wish that more people did.

RorrKonn is quite right, and I don't think he should have to show off a portfolio of work in order to have his opinion taken seriously. Obviously I'm not just saying that to just RorrKonn, so nothing personal here. The point I'm making is simple. If someone is going to publicly slate the efforts of other people, and claim they can do a better job, shouldn't they be able to demonstrate they really can do that? It's a bit like me saying I'm a racing car driver because I once waggled a wheel on a scalectrix. You wouldn't sit me to me on a trip to Sainsbury's in a 911. Instead you'd wanna see that I had the skills to back up that statement. Yet in poserdom sometimes it feels the only qualifaction needed to be an "expert" is the ability of those who don't to slate the efforts of those that do. Which considering the many hours a lot of good folks put into their products and freebie for our benefit really isn't very fair. Poser content is often better made than so called "pro" stuff and it's also made by artists with pride and care. Certainly a darn sight cheaper as well. Sure sometimes it might be not quite be as we'd like it to be, but is that really a solid reason to say someones work is poor. Hardly. More so when most creators would never claim perfection in their work, they are always looking to improve and learn. So why don't we stop slating creators and start actually thanking them for the amazing stuff they give us. Because without them our hobby would be a lot poorer.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

RorrKonn- no need to apologise to me buddy, like I said last post it's nothing personal. My point is just a simple one, I don't feel theres a need to slate creators for the stuff they make for us. I'm also not saying that should be a global no criticism rule. Far from it, a good constructive critiques can help artists. The point is saying that fairly and as a community it seems like we don't. Instead it often seems theres a tendency to simply go 'meh' purely to undermine the effort someone has made. Which as well as being wrong is counter productive for everyone in the community. As well as creating strife it means less chance artists will get to work together, which means ultimately we all lose out. I think when we see something we don't like, we shouldn't always leap to critique, but Instead maybe nicely demonstrate new techniques which can lead to the creation of the things we want.
