Subject: I want Michael 6 in Poser

Joey301 ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2014 at 10:17 AM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 12:58 PM

I want to add M6 to my poser, but I don't want to screw it up this time. I think I am on my third version of Poser (14 pro) and in the past, I have screwed up files big time by trying to add a Daz character. At this point Poser is a relatively new install and I have not added any content other than what came with the package. So, I have an opportunity to install M6 properly and cleanly, which to me, is really hard in Poser.

How should I do it? Should I create a new high lever folder first for DAZ, or M6? Should the folder be in a Runtime folder?

I am sure there are multiple ways to do this, I am hoping one of them is one that I can comprehend.

Thx,

Joey

I just made a new external Poser Genesis folder and install it to there along with the Poser CF files and just linked that content directory to Poser. So, it does not conflict or clash with existing runtimes or content directories. Basically you install M6 and M6 CF (Poser files)to your directory.

So easy steps are -> Choose a hard-drive, make a directory you want to use, install both Daz and Poser CF files to that. Link that directory to Poser library.

Thanks, I don't know what the CF files are, and what do you mean my linking them. Am I linking them in Poser? So the DAZ file folders are totally outside of any Poser Folders?

Thx

Do you have the DSON importer for Poser?  Install it if you don't have it installed.  If you do not have a copy fo DS4 installed, make sure the box in the install menu that installs the DAZ Studio 4.x files is checked.  This will install the DS files you need.

As Zev posted, make a new runtime for the files.  You will need the Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials and the Poser Companion Files along with M6 files.  M6 is a morph set for G2M and not a stand alone figure with obj file as M4 is.

Make sure the DSON importer is pointing to a writeable folder.  If it is pointing to a protected folder such as one in the program files folder, it won't work.

Are you running a 64 bit OS?

thank you all. I suppose simple was out of the question after all. I will read what you have suggested.

icprncss2 ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2014 at 6:55 AM

It is not all that difficult if you take it step by step.

If you don't have the DSON importer for Poser from DAZ, get it.  Install it.  The importer comes with Genesis Starter Essentials, the Poser Companion files for it, as well as the Genesis 2 Female and Genesis 2 Males Starter Essentials and their Poser Companion Files.

Install the DSON.  As it posted above, if you don't have a copy of DS4 on your system, you will need to make sure the check box in the importer installation is checked so that the required DS files are installed with the importer scripts.

Check Poser's python folder to make sure the DSON importer scripts installed.  Install the Starter Essentials and the Poser companion files to a separate external runtime outside the program files folder.  Do not install to the main Poser runtime.

Since M6 is simply a morph set for Genesis 2 Male, that is one you want installed the most.  Install the M6 files to the same runtime as the other Genesis/Genesis 2 files.

Launch Poser.  Check the drop down scripts menu to see if the DSON python files are there.  Point Poser at your Genesis runtime.  If you have the files installed correctly, you should see the files.  Do as you do with any other figure in the Poser library.

Now, if you are using a 32 bit OS or P10 (which is a 32 bit app), you can run into slow downs or library lock.  Library lock is where the library stops working.  At that point the only option is to exit Poser and try again.

Sorry for the long post.

Joey301 ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2014 at 7:10 AM

i have started as you suggest. I have the DSON and the essentials. ALthough I think one had a different name, i think it is Starter Essentials for Poser instead of the CF you mentioned. I have them all on my hard drive now (secondary HD, my main one is SSD). WHen I went back to DAZ, I was happy to see that all of my old purchases were still available for me, so I have M4 and a few morphs. I still have not done the installation yet, maybe this weekend. Thx

If you are running a 32-bit based Poser version, set your General Preferences settings for the library to use Adobe Air rather than Adobe Flash.  This will undock the Library as a separate feature and eliminate the slow down.

After loading Michael 6, go to the DSON Importer script and set the subdivision to 0, this will also offset any app slowdown when adding content and posing.

And download Dimension3D's DSONLoader (Free) from here:

http://d3d.sesseler.de/index.php?software=poserpython&product=dson_loader

This is a wonderful, useful script which will load DSON files into Poser when PCF is not available for certain content.  Otherwise, PCF would need to be generated through DAZStudio and saved to Poser.  This process is much more involved and requires a better understanding using DAZStudio.

DSONLoader is a separate script not associated with DAZ's DSON Importer, but it simplifies loading DSON related files into Poser without relying on Poser Companion Files and the actual DSON script.

For example, I had a situation on my setup where whenever I loaded Genesis/Genesis2 into the scene with corresponding genitalia, I always got 2 figures appearing.  No matter how I imported the figures, I got the same result.  Everything loaded fine in DAZStudio.  After much thinking and testing, I resolved the issue by loading the figures/genitalia in DAZ, saving the scene as a DSON .duf and importing it into Poser using D3D's DSONloader.  Not only did I import a corrected figure, it retained all their morphs and were fully poseable.

This makes no sense.

I have the Genesis 2 Male and Female (the Poser CF) in a Genesis2/Runtime folder.  I copied the DAZ stuff for Michael 6 and the Poser CF for Michael 6 into that folder.

When I load M6, it just loads the Genesis 2 Male with a bunch of errors about not finding lashes, skin, etc.

Did you load the DAZ Genesis 2 Male & Female base into the folder as well?  Those should be located under My Library.  Essentially, your Genesis2 folder should contain both a runtime and My Library folder for DAZStudio and Poser support.

Did you merge the Runtime and Data folders from the Michael 6 zips with the ones you already had? The way it's phrased, it sounds as if you may have nested the Michael 6 files inside the old folders which won't work.

I tried both ways.  I installed to a different computer, then copied the POSER CF (runtime) into a Michael 6 folder.  Then I copied the DAZ content directory into a separate folder.  I linked both in Poser.  That didn't work.  So I tried copying both the Poser CF (runtime) and content folders into the same Michael 6 directory.  That didn't work.

Please let me know what exactly the folders should be.

What folder do you have selected as the Poser library folder for the Genesis 2 Male files?

Zev0 ( ) posted Tue, 26 August 2014 at 3:07 PM · edited Tue, 26 August 2014 at 3:21 PM

Vilters that was mainly an issue with Genesis1 because it had to populate both male, female and universal morphs..which did eat up a bit of memory due to the extensive amount of morphs it populated. And to get it to work does Not involve any hacks. Also what version did you last try? Dson has been improved since the G1 days.

To Get Genesis2 to work -> Create a new "Poser Genesis" folder. Install Base or content and Poser CF files to that directory. Link to Poser Library and done. What is so hard about that? The main problem is that people think everything must go into runtime. The Daz content folders such as data, People etc need to remain outside of it.

This is a very quick video showing where files should go. Just pause it step by step. Its not in english but by looking at the directories it's easy to follow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL2m_OY9izA

@vilters: "DAZ is the only software company I know of that cracked/hacked into its own system to create the DSON , to get "something", sometmes, working in Poser, at a HUGE memory cost, but that is yet another discussion."

Sometimes? This is not the case on my PC. It always loads and nothing loads longer than a minute, most things are faster for example clothes. Only some (fiber) hair loads longer than that. I have only 8 GB RAM and I'm able to load four to six Genesis 2 Male characters (M6) in a scene (depends on hair and clothes, can't tell about V6 I don't have her). It was sluggish in the G1 days yes but it changed a lot to the better.

I think that personal opinion should be completely left out from this discussion and focus on the problem at hand.  The degree of success depends on the individual willing to invest the time to make it work, and I don't think that passing bias judgements is going to solve anything.  I have got it to work on a sub-optimal 32-bit system without major problems and I am quite satified with some of my workarounds.  Please do not turn this thread into a DAZ vs Poser slugfest.  There are plenty of users that can't even install and, no less, use V4 in Poser despite how long she's been floating along.

I have a Michael 6 folder with all the Genesis 2 male, M6 Daz and Poser CF files in it.

A couple of thinsgs I am going to add.

  1. Poser Companion Files (PoserCF) are Python Scripts. Poser prefers that Python Scripts are in the main/base Poser Runtime. For speed purposes, I personally recommending installing them there.

  2. Whenever possible make the Library Pane external.

3, If your genesis files are no longer in the same directory path as your PoserCF files, make sure the runtime that is in the Content Directory with your Genesis/G2F/G2M files are in is mapped to the Poser Library.

  1. It greatly speeds things up if you are not using an external drive, and is even better if your cache folder is on an SSD.

Even without an SSD, Genesis (with most of the available morphs installed), after the first load, loads on my machine, significantly faster than V4 plus injecting Morphs++. In fact it loads faster than Roxie, without morphs with an SSD, in Poser. YMMV.

Also note if things are bogging down, turn off Sub-D in the DSON Importer until you are ready to render. (Set it to -1 or in the dropdown.)

Joey301 ( ) posted Sat, 03 January 2015 at 7:22 PM

i tried again today. It is not working. I installed DSON, and the two essential Genesis content folders. One of them I can find in Poser looking for content, but the essential says there are no files. To complicate everything, I have an SSD hard drive and do not want any of this located there, so I am trying to install everything to separate drive. I think i already have a mess. I have not installed M6 yet.

You should not expect to find anything in the DS runtime that Poser cannot see.  Placing both runtimes onto a separate drive is perfectly valid and will work without problems.  DSON should be installed into the main Poser folder and any runtime folder you have linked to it.  You have not given any specific details about your installation, what workflow you followed, or whether you successfully installed everything correctly be running the script when loading either Genesis 2 Male or M6.

We could really scare you an tell you how it was done before the DSON importer and DSON loader script.

The old cr2 export method was even worse.

You have to have the DSON importer installed to use the DSON loader script.

Not to try to confuse the issue, but I've recently started to export Genesis characters and clothing directly from Daz Studio, rather than using the DSON importer. Thanks to a utility by Netherworks that cleans up the CR2s, the result is clean native Poser content that runs without the importer script activating. It's a multi-step process, so a real pain for newbies because so much has to be done manually, rather than simply loading assets from the library. But the end result is, IMO, much, much better. (Essentially, it's using JoePublic's method -- but Netherwork's script does the CR2 editing for me.)  ---------------------------------------------------------

To the OP -- It doesn't matter which HDD you use.  (Note: Sometimes where I say "click on", you may actually need to "double click")

Main Poser Runtime -- this is the folder called "Runtime" that is in the same directory as the Poser executable. You should not install content to this runtime -- except for Python scripts. When you installer the DSON importer, this is the runtime to which the script should be installed.

Poser Content Runtime -- this is the folder called "Runtime" that is usually located in Documents or Documents and Settings (under the default install of Poser) inside a directory called "Poser Pro 2014" or something like that. OR is located somewhere else that you chose during installation. To avoid issues with User Access Control (UAC), It should not be located in Program Files.

Genesis Content Runtime -- this is the folder you choose to install your Genesis and Genesis 2 content to. You can install all that content into the Poser Content Runtime, but most of us find it easier to keep it separate.

Some confusion may come from the fact that users tend to use the term "Runtime" to refer to both the general area where you keep content AND the specific folders with the name "Runtime."

All folders called "Runtime" need to be located inside another directory. When you navigate to your Poser library inside Poser to "point" Poser to a new "Runtime", you will need to select the option in the list of runtimes that appear in Show Library (above the left panel). At that point, a + icon will appear in the top right of the Library panel. Clicking on + will bring up a dialog to add a new Runtime. You need to select the directory that contains the runtime folder that you want to add (not the runtime folder itself).

So the process for installing DSON content for Poser is this:

  1. Install the DSON importer so that the python script is located in your Main Poser Runtime. You will have this option once you have started the DSON installation executable called DSON_importer_for_Poser_Win64*******.exe (or Win32, if you are running a 32 bit OS or 32 bit Poser)

  2. Make sure you have all six ZIP files called:

a. Genesis Starter Essentials

b.  Genesis Starter Essentials PoserCF

c. Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials

d. Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials PoserCF

e. Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials

f. Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials PoserCF

Inside each of the Daz Studio content zips, you will find a folder structure that looks something like this:

Content>aniblocks

              >Animals

              >Camera Presets

              >data

             >Daz Studio Tutorials

             >Light Presets

             >People

             >Props

             >Runtime

             >Scenebuilder

These are mostly Daz Studio related content. You need to install it in order for the DSON importer to work, but once those things are installed, you don't need to concern yourself with anything that isn't in the folder called "Runtime." The folder called "Runtime" is where your library is going to look for assets to load into Poser.

Each of the PoserCF ZIPS will look something like this (they may have more or fewer folders, depending on the nature of the content):

Content>

            >Runtime

                         >Geometries

                          >Libraries

                                         >Character

                                         >Hair

                                         >Materials

                                         >Pose

                           >Textures

  1. Extract the zips and merge them.

What you want to do is make sure that all of these zips are extracted so that the folder structures go into the same place (runtime to runtime, textures to textures, etc). The easiest way to do that is to extract them all into one directory and then merge the folders.

You end up with a directory called "Content" that has all the Daz Studio subfolders inside and also the "Runtime" subfolder. You can rename "Content" to anything you want. Let's name it "Genesis Content".

  1. Link the Genesis content inside Poser.

When you open Poser, navigate to the Library Panel. On the left hand side, you have the option to select runtimes that have been added. Choose the in the Show Library option. In the top right, the + icon will appear. Click +, and in the dialog that opens, select the folder called "Genesis Content".

You will have to refresh you library to see the new content. Click on Show Library down arrow. Select Genesis Content. In the left panel, click on the name of the runtime "Genesis Content" again. It will be highlignted in blue. A circular arrow icon appears next to it. Click on that icon and it will refresh this runtime. The subfolders for this runtime will now appear in the left and right panels. To load the Genesis 2 Male, navigate to the figures tab, search through the folders, and locate the Genesis 2 male figure. Load it as you would any other item from your library. The DSON script will begin, and after a short wait, the character will appear on your screen.

If this is working, then it is time to install Michael 6.

Download the Michael 6 ZIPS from Daz. There should be one called Michael6.zip and one called Michael6PoserCF.zip. They will have the same structure as the Genesis Starter Essentials zips you already installed. Install Michael 6 the same way. Inside the zip there will be a folder called "Content", you can drag, copy, or extract everything INSIDE the content folder to your "Genesis Content" directory. The point is that you want the folder structure of these zips to stay intact so that folders merge with one another.

Once that's done, you will need to refresh you library inside Poser again, and the Michael 6 content will appear. You can load the figure from in a folder called "Daz People".

Once you have your character figure (Michael 6) loaded in your screen, you may want to change the subdivision level. On the top menu in Poser, under Scripts>DSON Support>Subdivision, you have the option to increase, decrease, or turn subdivision off. Generally, you want subdivision OFF until you're ready to render.

If you have succeeded in installing some clothing specifically for Michael, and loaded it, and it isn't fitting properly, the Transfer Active Morphs will make sure that the Michael 6 morphs are activated in the clothing -- that is assuming that the clothing actually has morphs for Michael 6. If it was made for him, it should. :)

Where I wrote: " When you navigate to your Poser library inside Poser to "point" Poser to a new "Runtime", you will need to select the option in the list of runtimes that appear in Show Library (above the left panel)..."

You need to select the "All" option. "All" is actually inside arrow brackets. Like > <, only the other way around. :D

If a mod could edit my big post with instructions to include this note, it might be helpful.  Otherwise, figuring out how to link or point the Poser library might be kinda hard for a new user. Up to you guys, if you've got time. Thanks.

Adding my 2 cents, there have been reports of Genesis not working correctly after extraction from compressed files as described by moriador.  I cannot confirm nor verify this, but I, personally. have not had any problems as yet.  The recommended method is to use DAZ Install Manager (DIM) to place your figures and content into their intended location; the software installs folders contained within the pesky Content folder.  I will not get into setting up preferences with DIM, it will only complicate the workflow.

Hmmm. I hadn't heard that. I've extracted hundreds of Genesis and Genesis content zips and so far have experienced nothing unusual. But I've never seen any one murdered either, and clearly that happens. So... Maybe it's because I always use 7-zip and not the windows extractor. Dunno. (Come to think of it, I usually just drag folders directly out of the zip files). But I do find it easier to install manually. Moreover, once you've got the hang of installing manually, you're not constantly wondering where your content went. :) Yep, the "Content" directory that Daz wraps its files in is annoying, if one hasn't yet grasped how the files work in relation to one another. (Or if you want to just extract directly to a runtime directory). Me, I just named my Genesis content directory "Content". LOL. Solves that problem for me.

I suppose you could just get the DIM to install all the Genesis content to a single folder and then just move the whole thing wherever you want it -- and then rename the main directory if you like.

Online Now!

I believe it's the Creator's Toybox at RDNA.  A versatile program and it may be on sale now.

It is indeed on sale, so bought it.  Thanx!  :)

Just a point with the conversion to native Poser figures. Netherworks suggests that the characters be exported out of DS directly, then saved to the Poser library and run through the optimizer. This works beautifully. However, converting clothing that has been saved by loading it through the DSON importer is -- not as satisfactory. I get similar viewport slow downs and parameter dial "stiffness" as I did with DSON -- the references in the CR2 to DSON script seem to remain intact. I could, of course, be doing something wrong. But when I export clothing from DS (after dialing in the morphs I want), and follow the same steps as I did with the characters, it's smooth as silk. Genesis 2 Male can be exported with an M4 UV if you bought M4 for G2M -- but matposes and material files do not work (for me, anyway). However, texture maps fit quite well. Again, it's a multistep process. But you do end up with a natively functioning, weightmapped figure with as many or as few morphs as you want (if you remove the unwanted ones from DS's awareness before loading your fig) that can be dressed in any of the clothing that autofit will adapt to it.

Edit: Of course, AFAIK, there's no way to inject additional morphs once the fig has been converted. But I expect (and would love it) someone will explain how I'm wrong about that. :)

Even without the Creator's Toybox, it is a known fact that even saving Genesis/Genesis 2 back to the Library within Poser breaks the inject feature for the figure.  You wind up with multiple versions with different individual morphs.
