Subject: Conforming clothes and hair animation

NolosQuinn ( ) posted Sun, 08 May 2016 at 8:49 PM

@VWD - You're right. I now remember lowering the hair after the first sim, which would place the vertices as you say inside the head. I'm currently rendering a project. When it is complete, I will reset the hair and test.

Thanks so much. You are the man!

@ErickL88 : Thank you for your purchase. I would like to understand your problem. You make a simulation in VWD, all works well and you can see the simulation in Poser? If this is correct, I can explain you why you cannot be sure to use the deformed hair as morph target. When I began to develop VWD, I made the simulation and then, I applied the Poser cloth modifier to be able to use the .DYN file to animate these dynamic elements. Some of these actors returned with a false vertices count and the simulation was unusable. To correct this problem, I apply the Poser cloth modifier before the simulation. The animations in Poser are fine, but the original mesh and the simulated one have not the same vertices count. Then, you cannot apply it as morph target. The best solution would be to not apply the Poser cloth modifier. This is perhaps possible in Poser 11 which uses a .ABC file for simulation. I have to make some tests. But this solution is not possible for your current version. Have you this problem with many hair?

Thanks for the explanation. My lazy self thought, it could be as easy as with a Poser cloth sim. Where I simulate the cloth piece and save the result as a morph target (no world transformation). But I totally understand that things are differently with VWD and it's not a problem at all. Just thought having the same workflow would come in handy =). As long as I can export the with VWD simulated hair or cloth or whatever, I'm fine. And since this is working nicely, I am fine :)

VirtualWorldDynamics ( ) posted Wed, 11 May 2016 at 9:56 PM

@ErickL88 : During the development of VWD, I never thought to the creation of morph targets. In VWD all the vertices informations are in world coordinates. I suppose a morph target works in local coordinates. There is just a transformation to do. If some users are interested by the creation of morph targets, I can do it into VWD. I just need a little help to know how to create them.

I had a bug found by Smaker1. It is corrected and I will send the three versions (Complete ,Lite and Demo) in the coming days.

Being able to create morph targets would be a great addition to the tool. As I mentioned earlier in the forum, I wanted to also use the results from the VWD simulation of my hair as a morph target (but could never get it to work).

DaremoK3 ( ) posted Wed, 11 May 2016 at 11:11 PM · edited Wed, 11 May 2016 at 11:19 PM

I'm also very interested in being able to utilize VWD for morph targets.

I was able to do one level of morph targets with the first iteration copy of the cloth mesh by first saving (send pose to host) immediately after loading cloth into VWD's scene viewer. Next, I changed the name amending the _VWD to something like _Sim01. Then I used that mesh copy (created by VWD) as the cloth mesh to be simulated. Once simulated, I saved the current pose again, and changed name to _Sim02. I could then export the sim-ed mesh with default OBJ settings for MT's, and re-import it as a MT for the first mesh copy (_Sim01).

The MT worked with out vertex explosion. Unfortunately, this only worked for the first iteration, because if I repeated the process, any subsequent sim-ed versions' vertex order was destroyed, and all new MT's resulted in mesh explosion.

So, basically, you just need to get a handle on maintaining vertex ordering, and I know it can't remain the same for original meshes. Since, we are really working from the copies that VWD creates, you can work to see if we can bring this to the forefront. Also, there will need to allowances for the two different copy versions that could be created via either a straight copy of the original, or a Sub-D/tessellated (make compatible) version using your tessellation algorithm. I tested against both Sub-D, and direct copies. Both yield positive results for just the one iteration.

Since you are working with python, perhaps check the vertex ordering coding in Blender's OBJ import/export scripts to see how they were able to maintain the ordering.

I hope this helps...

DaremoK3 ( ) posted Thu, 12 May 2016 at 1:25 AM

Okay, Gérald, my post above was regarding the previous testing version. I just tested the new release, and it seems you have solidified the vertex ordering in the OBJ's that VWD creates.

Using the same work-flow, I was able to create multiple morph targets for the first iteration copies of both non-tessellated, and tessellated versions. I only performed simple testing on Poser9's default Hi-Rez Sphere (nice melting bouncing balls), but it seems this is a viable avenue to pursue for those wanting to use VWD for morph target work.

No need to look into the Blender scripting. You already have it correct. You just need to find a way to make it available up front at user level.

This is already fantastic. I was hoping you would eventually address the issue, and it was on my list of things to ask you about for future versions. With this version, and my work-around, I can already use for MT work. Great job! Oh, and this new version is awesome. Much faster, and responsive.

DaremoK3 ( ) posted Thu, 12 May 2016 at 1:52 AM

On second thought, Gérald, you could see if it is possible that when VWD creates the bridged copy OBJ, that it could maintain the original mesh vertex order. Then customers could work from the original meshes. Of course, this would not work for the tessellated versions, so there would still be that to contend with.

Finally saved up and bought VWD, and I'm very happy. I have yet to go over all 26 pages here and the documentation and tutorials, but I will ask, is it possible for users to make presets for other figures, ie aiko 3?

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

VirtualWorldDynamics ( ) posted Fri, 13 May 2016 at 3:00 AM

@3DFineries : Thank you for these renderings. I am happy the problem is resolved.

@shedofjoy : Thank you for your purchase. When you say a preset for Aiko3, I suppose it is for hair. You can make your vertices selection and give a name to this selection. You have to enter a name in the combo box in the Hair tab. This new name will be the list the next time you want to make a simulation on hair.

I know there are many improvements to do on VWD. The program has many functions and the current functions are not fully understood. I stop the work on the program for one month or a little more and I make video tuturials. Here is a list of the ones I want to do :

1 : Rigidification of a square of fabric. 2 : Rigidification a cloth 3 : Mesh subdivision to prevent interpenetrations. 4 : Simulation of an old conforming cloth. 5 : Adaptation of an inadapted cloth to a character. 6 : Modifying hair with problem ears. 7 : Simulation of a trampoline. 8 : Rope simulation: jump rope, swing. 9 : Folds and fabric wrinkling. 10 : Animation of a chain. 11 : Animation of a pearl necklace. 12 : Wind animation. 13 : Memory overflow issue. 14 : Simulation of a pleated skirt. 15 : Animation of normal hair. 16 : Animation of free smooth hair. 17 : Vertices interaction (remove a t-shirt, French cancan) 18 : Earrings simulation. 19 : Simulation of a bun. 20 : Adjustment of stockings or tights. 21 : Setting for the Self collision. 22 : Self collision by extension. 23 : Interface of VWD : Vertices selection. 24 : Dynamic deformation. 25 : Correction of an animation.

Tell me what you think of this list. Many work in perspective.

The Lite version is released. This version allows to do the same simulation than the complete version, but you cannot export animations into Poser. All the poses can be exported using static or dynamic simulations.

I begun to work on the video tutorials.

Hello VWD

Here is a new render. Why did I put this one in a VWD topic like there are no dynamic simulation for clothes or hairs?

Reading your futur tutorial topics a word stroke me: "rope". So I tried to do simulation for some cables and it worked like a charm ! Cables (red, blue and violet) on the floor and robot back clothe (light blue and red) were made with VWD with a simple cylinder primitive.

The result is far better and natural than all "easy pose" tubes I bought. So right now I'm waiting for your tutorials to have plenty more ideas and improve myself 😃

Have a good WE!

I'm really enjoying playing with this, this is excellent for adding discarded clothing that's been thrown on the floor, I've not yet found an item of clothing that doesn't look good as floor litter. one question can I use VWD on props? I've yet to try this.

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

Smaker1 ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2016 at 1:05 AM

Yes you can! you can simulate whatever you want: imported objects, props, hairs, clothes. My last example was with cylinder primitives.

shedofjoy ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2016 at 3:47 AM

@smaker1 fantastic image, i have yet to try anything like making tubes dynamic, don't even know where to start on how they keep there shape without collapsing, going off to play some more and hitting some tutorials.

Smaker1 ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2016 at 5:15 AM

Thanks ! I played with rigidity, self collision and gravity. I'm not a specialist and it's more "try and error". For example the red cable on floor was my first try but the result is an happy accident. The bad thing is I forgot the parameters!

shedofjoy ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2016 at 8:30 AM

I'm having trouble with getting to hang some clothes via a strap on a tube that is the thickness of a finger, I have tried using a finger and a tube, but the strap keeps falling through the finger/tube, it does stick for the first frame but then slides through, is there a way to stop this?

Smaker1 ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2016 at 9:07 AM

You can try with subd on collision object, also gravity can be too important and without seeing your scene, I would use the tool in the Simulation parameter (don't remember the name!) to pin clothe vertices where you want on the tube

shedofjoy ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2016 at 4:46 PM

I have tried nailing some of the cloth vertices to the tube but the cloth still falls through, although then it stops below the collision object and then drapes, which was ok for me as I just moved the object created by VWD in poser up. more tests needed I think, I will post a pic

Smaker1 ( ) posted Fri, 27 May 2016 at 1:41 AM

In some case I use morph tool (smooth, moving some vertices,...) to make some minor adjustments of the resulted sim instead of spending plenty of time to do it in the simu tool. It's was also the case with Poser clothing room.

primeuser ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2016 at 12:44 PM

Sorry, just bought the plug-in and having problems in poser. The simulation runs fine but each time I try and send the animation back to poser it basically closes the scene (though it still shows in recent files but w/o any animation) and loads a new scene in its place. Hopefully I am doing easy to fix.

Smaker1 ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2016 at 2:14 PM

VWD doesn't close the scene but creates a new object (-VWD) in the scene for the clothe simulated and the clothe before simulation is invisible. Can you show some screen capture (scene before or scene after)?

primeuser ( ) posted Thu, 02 June 2016 at 3:24 PM

I am also using the fine plugin for Carrara and everything works fine. There are no screens from Poser. I run the sim and everything seems normal. But as soon as I hit the button to send the animation to the host application, Poser all by itself closes out the scene I had been working on and opens a brand new empty scene. Everything is then lost.

Smaker1 ( ) posted Fri, 03 June 2016 at 6:21 AM

Never had this problem. Perhaps you could address this in the VWD Forum, there is a dedicated topic for troubles

Did you try with a static simulation?

VirtualWorldDynamics ( ) posted Sun, 31 July 2016 at 12:04 AM

I post just a little message to say the program continues to be improved. The VWD forum allows you to find replies to your questions. I work again on hair simulations. Here is a link to a simulation showing a new method for long hair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JXXclWqjAQ

Okay, I've bombed through 26 pages of this thread hoping to find an answer, but it looks like I'm the only one having this problem . . . I've downloaded the demo version, along with Biscuit's video tutorial (Thank you!!!). I've followed along, step by step, but I get an "out of memory" error when I try to set up hair on V4. I have 16 GB of RAM on this machine, so I don't see how I can be running out of memory.

Also, I've been reading about presets through this thread. There are NO presets available in the pull-down menus. Is that feature only available in the full version?

Please advise.

Forget the previous post I found the info I needed!

Where is the studio bridge I hear of!?

And why isn't it included in the $40 package?

I don't feel like hunting through endless forum pages for a link! I personally think the program is redundant for poser as poser already has a functional cloth/hair simulator, it is daz studio that is in desperate need for dynamic simulation, it's the only thing holding me back towards a purchase as I use Daz Studio exclusively, thanks in advance! 😉

Smaker1 ( ) posted Mon, 11 September 2017 at 3:12 PM

VWD is sold by Virtual Dynamic at Rendo with a bridge for Poser. It's not redundant with the clothe simulator natively inside Poser as there are functionnalities that doesn't exist in Poser. The Carrara bridge and Daz bridge are also sold by Philemot at Rendo.

Look for "VWD" in the marketplace and you will see all of them
