Subject: Avatar Lab, Atmosphere and Poser oh my! (where to post)

jschoen ( ) posted Tue, 20 November 2001 at 12:00 PM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 6:03 AM

Ok, it seems that I've run into some people that are as in the dark on things relating to AL (Avatar Lab), Atmosphere and Using Poser to take advantage of these two new arrivals. Mostly I'm talking about AL and Atmos. Poser I know ;-) (well except for those pesky joint parameters). Kupa, if your around. Where do we go to start a forum? Will Curious Labs strat one specifically for AL and Atmos? It is really needed for AL and Atmos. We need to post our problems, fixes and the rest. Al right now has a bug in that it will not save the anims correctly. When in a Atmos world, maybe one or two of the anims work, the rest just don't. I've run into many people having this problem. I've done some templates for the parts in AL. SO in this NEW forum (or maybe here soon hint) I'd like to post those. I won't even go into the problems with the BETA version of Atmos. But I will gripe about the 6 hours of work that is unreadable now. sob. Anyway, I hope that this Atmos thing keeps going forward. I'd hate to see this just fade away. I know! I've read the other threads, DON'T start in on this thread about how this will be forever and all that. This is not the thread for that. I think in time there will be some FABULOUS avatars and some trully immersive Worlds that will be coming soon. So where to we go from here? We desparatly need more tutorials and addendums to the almost non-exsistant manuals. Sorry Kupa, but the supplied PDF, is far from complete. James

Yes I would second that. I would like to see a Renderosity forum devoted to these areas. Similarly a freestuff section. I am working towards giving away free avatars that are totally my own work. Currently I can not do that within the current sections. I'm also working towards writing a tutorial on how to create avatars using the Pro Pack which I would like to post here.

You're a saint Phil! Let's hope things progress and this will happen. I will also be giving away: Poses, props and the like. But before I do, I'd like to get a few of the questions that I have answered. Well more than a few ;-) Even as we speak, I'm putting together a Victorian house to roam around in. I'd like to do some period avatars for this too. And some props. But again, where is all the info? I can get only so far by trial and error. *EG And maybe soon CL will fix some bugs. Or it might be Adobe that needs to move forward a little faster. Hmmm, try to push Adobe to do anything, that would indeed be a miricle (No offense Adobe). James

I am interested in Avatar Lab and Atmosphere, but the Atmosphere will not load on my machine. It starts out fine and then aborts when I complete the acceptance of the license for the NON-Adobe component (Viewpoints viewer?). I have downloaded it and it still aborts. Now I did download the Viewpoint plugin before I ever got Atmosphere...do I need to remove it first? Thanks, M. Glant

PhilC ( ) posted Tue, 20 November 2001 at 5:56 PM

Yes I had this happen also. The solution is to delete (or rename) your existing Viewpoint and metastream folders. Then reinstall Atmosphere. I grant you it would be handy if this was written into the installer, but there we go :)

Worked like a charm...Thanks Phil, by the way I have enjoyed your 3D modeling CD...just have had limited time to use it because I am trying to do LW tutorials before a conference in a few weeks. Mick

Ok peoples, I've gone and done it.... I published my first test world. It is FAR from being done, but I thought I'd test it out on the net to see how slow it loads. Well, as I feared ... (I always have to have detail) it's not impossible, but it does indeed take a little time to load all the pics. But what fun it was making it. The plan is to have an entire house as a world. Since I love having people over and I love going over to people homes. What better world to do than a fantasy home. I've only done the Foyer. And that was a time to get done. And since there are no ather rooms, if you go through any of the doors you'll fall to a big empty floor below. Took me awhile to figure out how to climb back up such steep stairs ;-). I put it there because I kept falling off the world as I was making it. Anyway, go take a looksie. Type: /goto http://jnjgraphics.net/worlds/victorian/victorian.aer in the Chat bar. Tell me what you think. And remember, this is just a first try and I have so much more to do on this. And also it is done completely with Atmos primitives. I found that importing a VET kept crashing the file. I still have to figure out how to embed it into an HTML page or such. And I still have soooooo many questions to ask. And I wish that my Avatar anims would work. The only one is the "Stand" anim. No "Walk", nothing else. Well, that's all for now. James

James, That is pretty awesome. Keep going!! I'll plunge into this after Thanksgiving (get a new DSL line so I can download the files). That will give me time to decide which world of so many ideas to build first. So I'll be asking lots of questions, too. :) Did the lights on the ceiling cast that glow, or did you do it in the texture map? Carolly

What exactly is the PDF missing? If there are indeed serious gaps, I'll be glad to fill them.

I do not discuss loading the avatars into Atmosphere, because that is an Atmosphere function that is not unique to Avatar Lab.

I do not discuss the Atmosphere UI because Atmosphere is an Adobe product and they should document that.

I do not discuss using the Viewpoint files published by Avatar Lab for other applications such as Web pages, etc. because integrating Viewpoint content into these apps is a Viewpoint process and should be documented by Viewpoint.

Basically, I tried to describe the application thoroughly without crossing the line to discuss other applications. When you publish your avatars, they will be in a form ready for including in Atmosphere worlds or on Web pages (see www.egisys.de and click the beared man for an example of Viewpoint content and also go to www.viewpoint.com).

I agree there needs to be documentation discussing the integration of all these apps, however due to branding, etc., this needs to be done by a third party unless other arrangements are made. As Atmosphere draws near final release, I will be contacting their docs team to talk about 'cross-pollinating' our documentation so it's more rounded out.

All that said, if there are gaps in the document that I can address, please email docs@curiouslabs.com and I will evaulate each comment received and, if deemed necessary, update the docs. Due to time, I can't respond personally to all input; I apologize in advance and assure you that I'll read all I get.

:-)

Hi James,

Just visited your Victorian world and am amazed. It is so realistic. Your use of textures and lighting is perfect. All loaded fine for me with a DSL link. You may want to add the chat facility, currently when I type in it does nothing. If you open the Atmosphere help section go to "Connecting Worlds, Users and the Web" and click on "Administering Worlds", then "Setting up chatting". It will tell you what to add in the world settings pallette in the Atmosphere Builder. At the moment when I connect using two computers I can not see my other self or chat to him. I think this will correct that.

If you go to my site (click on the "PhilC" below) you can see how I embedded a browser in the web page. Right click/view source and help yourself. Similarly if you would like the file set for (/goto) http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~pcooke/atmosphere/worlds/world3/world3_1public.aer drop me an email and I'll get them for you.

Thanks people! Hauksdottir: Carolly, To answer your question first. Yes the built in parameters from Atmos Builder do all the work. You set the "emit brightness" (glow) and cast in the program. Nosfiratu: Anthony, As for missing stuff in the manual/pdf; you did touch upon a few of the concerns, and I agree that the 3rd party people should be handling most of what you've talked about. Yes my main concern though was the JavaScript integration. What makes the anims work and how can we make sure that they're included and can we edit them in other programs to make sure they work. Right now many of the selected anims associated with the avatar do NOT work in Atmos. I know I have other questions, but it's early and I haven't quite woken up yet ;-) PhilC: Phil, Again you always come through. First of all, thanks for taking the time to check out what i had done (as with all these things we need someone else to look at things with a fresh eye and help de-bug things). Glad you liked it, as I said, it's far from done, and I suppose I can reduce some of the file sizes :), but I really like how you can get close to a wall per-sey and see the detail and not a blurred bunch of pixels. I guess this will cater to more of the DSL crowd. But if you have a cache set up and don't delete the files, it loads in quite fast the second time around nervous laugh. And thanks SOOOOOOO much for clueing me in about the "chat". I would have never known! Hopefully It isn't too hard to do, and I'll set that up today. I also would like to include a lot of JS (JavaScript) interactivity. Maybe you can hold my hand through that too. I'd like people to be able to open doors and drawers for one of the major things I'd like to do. An Avatar dressing room would be great too. I saw this done at "Pirates Cove". Thanks again everyone for responding, and I hope to do a lot and give a lot and end up with a place that all are welcome and will enjoy. James PS: Another thought I had last night: How about a co-op World? Where a bunch of eager people all make a room of their liking and then it's all put together as one big house or linked through portals. Just a thought.

PhilC you are wonderful, I had the same trouble with the installation. I did what you said about renaming the metastream folder and it works, yippeee!

I put a link to your world from http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~pcooke/atmosphere/worlds/world3/world3_1public.aer and here are some links you may find useful:-

Its fun when we all learn together :)[

LOL Phil. We will meet there after the holidays, or maybe durring. Thanks for all the help. But you did bring up a sad point in a personal e-mail. people can right now steal your entire world. I hope that Adobe fixes this SOON. We all know how much work goes into creating figures, textures and the rest. I hope we can get a bit of room here in Renderosity for Atmos and AL. They are so closely related to Poser. And I really hope that we can convince the members here that we all know and love to join in and make their appearences in out worlds. Have a great Holiday all! See my next thread for a holiday pic. James
