Thanks I just went and voted. Very cool stuff there. Sharen

audity ( ) posted Thu, 03 January 2002 at 6:17 PM

well, well, well...a lot of image out there !

Maybe my tastes are very limited, but I couldn't find
anything really interesting. nice technical works,
a few clever ideas, but nothing that could grasp my
attention for more than 5 sec...

Some artists even destroy their own work by doing
tasteless post or by using ugly Poser models.

I personally think that the image posted in the VUE
gallery everyday are, in general, of a higher "quality",
technically and artistically...

Ya but did ya vote? Got to be something there that ya like? I know what you mean though and would have to agree.

Oh here is a link. 25 pictures at a time if you got high speed or lots of time... It actually loads pretty good though.

audity ( ) posted Thu, 03 January 2002 at 9:21 PM

Yes man... I voted for Carles P. (entry #85 ) but it's only for the excellent texturing. see it there : http://www.renderosity.com/contest.ez?contest_id=31&ShowQuestion=1082 The rendering on CINEMA 4D XL is amazing (probably my next 3D software if I have enough $$$$). Eric

I almost gave up doing mine when I noticed that one :)

agiel ( ) posted Thu, 03 January 2002 at 9:55 PM

Besides... expecting high quality works is not really the point. The point is, here, that people took time to do come up with something. They created something that didn't exist before, they had fun, they even learned a thing or two in the process. If you want really high quality, you can have a look at contests like '3dluvr'... of course, they get that quality by requiring people to model everything on their own. That's way out of my league :) so it will take a while before I participate there. I'm staying here because I am having fun and I am learning a lot... that is the most important.

audre ( ) posted Thu, 03 January 2002 at 11:04 PM

huh, i thought that there were some darned fine entries! the style ranges were also nice, interesting and good food for creative thought. i agree too with agiel in that you should be having fun and learning while you do things like this -- that is what adds value to this whole community.

MikeJ ( ) posted Fri, 04 January 2002 at 3:16 AM

Well, I did my part and voted. For whom? I'll never tell. ;) Thanks much audre for your work in this contest and lovingly watching over it. For my own part, I had an idea which I thought was good, but I never finished it, due to the sheer complexity of it and the fact that I was modeling my own props for it. Well, maybe one day...... I saw many, many pictures I thought were worthy of winning, from softwares such as 3DS max to Cinema 4D, Vue, Bryce, and yes, even Poser. It was not an easy choice. I haven't had this much trouble deciding on something since voting for the Artist of the Year here, but it WAS alot of fun going through all the pics. :)

nathany ( ) posted Fri, 04 January 2002 at 4:13 AM

Decisions, decisions... My favorites: Myrdann (6) SndCastie (15) IsauraS (41) gunsan (59) pja (52) Alpha (73) lynde (103) Daio (114) Sparkyjones (115) cbalaskas (110) Adman (117) Sure a lot of images - hard to pick just one. Of course some seem rather off topic, so that helps. :) I wonder how many of the artists are really prepared to make a 2550 x 2984 version. - n8

MikeJ ( ) posted Fri, 04 January 2002 at 4:55 AM

"I wonder how many of the artists are really prepared to make a 2550 x 2984 version." Ouch! Yeah, that idea kinda freaked me out too. ;)

MightyPete ( ) posted Fri, 04 January 2002 at 1:50 PM

"I wonder how many of the artists are really prepared to make a 2550 x 2984 version."

Ya that added a complexity that I never thought about. I made mine that big and shrunk it so I know that I got it if some how all the oceans of the world freeze over and I win. But my point being now that I've done it is there is a possibility now that the winner will be unable to make such a large render in time for the printing... Like mine rendered no problem at the smaller size but I had all this trouble making the big one. One thing Vue never calculated the render time properly. When I started it said a little over 12 hours remaining. Scratch that idea. It took 108 hours and the clock never said over 36 hours remaining the entire render. The 49 rows at the horizon took over 24 hours alone.

One thing though I did have fun and learned you need a huge c drive to attempt such a big render. Ya like start with over 4 gigs of free space before you even start... My render never actually finnished. It only got to 94% and windows died because the c drive was full to the brim with the swap file.

My advice is have fun rendering the big one to who ever wins....

audre ( ) posted Fri, 04 January 2002 at 2:05 PM

OUCH! and sorry for the problems... this is indeed one of the largest (no pun intended) challenges a digital artist faces when doing work for print. i now do all my images with the intent of paper-publishing, even if i am doodling for fun because i can never quite recreate something that was 50% inspiration and 50% luck and good planet alignment at the time. i try to make each and every picture count. there is nothing more heart breaking than when someone says "hey i like that picture can i use it for a cover?" and you say... "DOH, Ummm NO, it's not big enough." been there, done that. i am so trained to work large now that honestly, i never gave it a second thought when asking for contest submissions that people would NOT work originally in the large size and just shrink down the entry for submission. i really apologize to everyone for not suggesting this right in the rules to save some heartache. for christmas this year, the only thing on my list to santa clause was new hard drives. a girl can never have too much free hard drive space!

MightyPete ( ) posted Fri, 04 January 2002 at 2:21 PM

Exactly... I have 100 gigs of space so hey I figure I got enough to do anything but I never realized just how much swap file space it would take to render it full size. I'm just going to resize C drive to 8 gigs from it's present 4 gigs. Doing the small one was no problem 12 hours it was done but then I figured ya right now watch I win and they'll be asking me for the big one so I gave it a try. Wooo man that was a eye opener... Like when it comes to print, resizing will never do. I think I'd hang on to the 20 that get in the final for awile because that actualy might determine who is actualy going to win.

tesign ( ) posted Sat, 05 January 2002 at 9:09 AM

Hey MightyPete...are participant for the contest allow to vote?

Varian ( ) posted Sat, 05 January 2002 at 2:14 PM

Absolutely, Bill! Every Renderosity member can place a vote on the "New Beginnings" contest, whether you are entered in it or not. :) If you're asking about the voting for Pete's "You Don't Have to Win to Win" contest, that hasn't been opened to voting yet, I don't think? If one of the Vue images happens to win in "New Beginnings", I assume that image would be disqualified from Pete's contest. So I'm thinking Pete's contest can't be voted on until after there are conclusive winners in "New Beginnings." Hope this makes sense okay. :)

tesign ( ) posted Sat, 05 January 2002 at 5:43 PM

Thanks Varian :) Yes, I was referring to "New Beginnings" contest. In this case, would there be participant voting for themselves?....LOL! As far as Pete's contest, that is very fair.

gebe ( ) posted Sun, 06 January 2002 at 9:20 AM

In my very unhumble opinion, all votes at Renderosity (wherever), when something important is to win, are completely rigged. Nobody can make me believe that such an unsignificant (and nearly ugly with very little work, compared to others)image as the one of SeaRose has the most votes. This must be a trick between friends and "autovotes". I'm happy I did not participate. Why do a great work for this kind of vote ? But I voted for N 85, which is a really great image for me. I also liked 5 or 6 other great pictures there with a real style and a great work in it. But I had to choose only one. Guitta

Well, different people have different interests and different tastes. They vote for what they like, and that isn't always what *I'd* like, but...that's what happens when you have a majority vote. I can assure you that the contests are *not* rigged. However, if you wish to pursue that theory, there's a thread in Complaint & Debate you could join in on.

agiel ( ) posted Sun, 06 January 2002 at 4:59 PM

Any selection based on a popularity contest over the web is rigged by definition. It does not mean that it is intensionally biaised to make someone in particular win. People just have friends, relatives, popularity that are bound to bring them a lot of votes regardless of the quality of their work. It is just the way it works on the web. At least, the authors of the contest recognize that and are supposed to select the winning picture out of the top 20 - this should ensure a good picture to come out of it, even if it is just the best of the 20 most popular ones. As for sea rose's image, you may not like it but it has the merit to show a lot of work in it... it is not the case some other pictures in the top 20 :) I am goin to check C&D right away... sometimes things can be fun there...

gebe ( ) posted Sun, 06 January 2002 at 5:11 PM

I'm happy you say so, agiel, and happy you will choose a real good image for the cover. :-) Guitta

agiel ( ) posted Sun, 06 January 2002 at 6:08 PM

Unfortunately, I am not part of the jury guitta :) I just come back from the C&D forum and it was particularly funny. Right down to a kindergarden level...

gebe ( ) posted Sun, 06 January 2002 at 6:26 PM

agiel, anyhow I do not want to go to the C&D :-), because I have nothing to debate. I just have eyes to see clear and I wanted to give my clear opinion, that's all. I agree that there are women in the world who squints and who has lips like piggy noses, but I feel like an insult for them to reproduce it as a parody in an "artistic" image. The background of the image, I agree, is beautiful. And here I stop definitely my blah-blah-blah, otherwise some will hammer on my head :-)LOL Guitta

tesign ( ) posted Sun, 06 January 2002 at 10:10 PM

Hello all. I was not paying attention to the "New Beginning Contest"...especially following up and did not realized that there was a "progressive voting result". After reading Agiela nd Gebe post...I visited the contest page and CD. Woah!... Btw, for those who have read what is going on at the CD about the "New Beggining" contest...its interesting to know what you all think about the way the judging has been organized? I don't recommend it though. Frankly, I normally do not participate in such contest that is judge by the public voting. Yes I read the rules and was not keen....but its the inspiration from MightyPete and those that support the idea of using Vue and as a family in this forum to 'pitch'against the others....for the fun of course. Agiel..."it was particularly funny. Right down to a kindergarden level... "...LOL!...what a way to put it :) Anyway, hope at the end of the day, the mag gets a descent cover with an image that makes all their subscriber happy :)

Varian ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 12:07 AM

I just got went through all the images and made my vote, and I just gotta say it was hard making that final choice! I narrowed it down to eleven (kept numbers on paper so I wouldn't skip any), then down to eight. I had marked a couple numbers as seeming extra-cool from the low-res previews, but when I saw the full-size image, I was disappointed in a lack of detail for both. The concepts were outstanding, but just not enough "life" in the images. So what I thought would be an easy choice turned out to not be so easy. And there were a couple I marked as I progressed through the previews, to make sure I remembered to check who made them; Tesign, one of those turned out to be yours! I was so surprised it was someone I knew because the style you used here is unlike anything I've seen you do before. Very nice work on it! And good luck to all the entrants! :)

tesign ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 12:43 AM

"Tesign, one of those turned out to be yours!"...only "turn out"...arrgghhh...how I wish you said..."and I voted yours!"....LOL! Jsut kidding. I really not sure how the members from all the community vote though...as I have asked earlier who the judges were etc..and are 'judges' qualified? Anyway, as far as the "New Beginnings" Contest is concern and from what I read at CD...It is true that the rules do not prohibit "friendly" vote support. But that is not the error in Penvai's complaint and everyone else is criticising the contest rules based upon the assumption that the winning picture is supposed to be the "best"...I'm not surprise and probably was the original intent. However, the contest rules do not even suggest that this is the case. One is asked simply to "Create your best art that reflects new beginnings." This condition does not require a comparison to the work of others. Assuming that a submission meets the remaining rules the final cut is determined by popular vote and nowhere is it suggested that voters should base their decision upon artistic content. So I would have to say there is nothing wrong with the way some people may be padding their chances of reaching the final selection group. Of course this may result in the embarrasing situation of Renderosity's magazine debute being adorned with a cover depicting total artisitc crap. Such a cover will do little to persuade people that the magazine content would be any better. This would truly be a shame. Ahem!...and please don't hammer me and this is my last words about the contest...I'm in for fun! :) Bill Tesign Tesign

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 2:28 AM

Hey guys... Its a real shame that all of this is happening. Kindergarten?...maybe a playgroup..this being because the actions displayed are indicative of children that are (pre schoolers) too young to join a kindergarten. They haven't learned to share or control their behaviour and more importantly social skills. I think the most important aspect to remember is that we have a membership of 70,000+ (please correct me if I am wrong) and this contest would have a significant impact if every member actually got in there and made their vote count. Member voting is always a volatile situation. Open to many indescretions and criticsim. The final 20 images (from the member voting) will go on to the judges panel...from there the judges will make their choice. I think you can safely say that the judges will not pick an image (even if voted #1 by members) that is not worthy of the winning position. They will look at all 20 and make their choice from there. My only regret is that the magazine did not have more time on their side to change the voting situation. I have faith in the judges that they will do the right thing and pick a good image. Maybe next time things will be different. In the meantime, I would like to thank all of you for supporting this contest, and a special thank you to all of the artists that submitted. There were some mighty fine entries and it made picking just one hard. One more plea...if u havent already voted...please do so. Make your vote count!

agiel ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 8:38 AM

Good to see some people are keeping their sanity around that contest. I don't know if I could keep mine :) Like you say, with 70,000+ registered users, it is interesting that they are fighting over entries with 'only' 30 or 40 votes. After almost a week, I was hoping to see a lot more votes. That more than anything else makes the results 'unfair'. Anybody with a minimum understanding of statistics would know that. Make a selection on a small number of samples (or votes), and the results will be completely fake. The only solution to this is a VERY large number of votes. Good luck for the magazine... I am really curious to hold it in my hands.

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 8:50 AM

I agree with your comments. Unfortunately the voices (in c&d a minority in a site with such a member number base)being heard are louder than most. Hence the uproar we are witnessing. I only wish that the rest of the membership would vote and show them that it is worth entering such endeavours.

Wizzard ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 9:02 AM

Vote's in.. but it was a really hard one to do... there's so many good renders in there... as for C&D? well... some people just have to stir up things to make themselves seem important or enlightened... it's a shame really 8 ( but with the membership as huge as it is.. you have to expect a few mindless ones about.

Varian ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 3:32 PM

No your right Voting for my contest opens January 15th barring any changes in the main contest. If you win the Renderosity contest somehow that's ok you can still of course and will be in this second contest unless you ask to be removed from it for some reason.

The idea here was just to get people to enter the main contest and if they win that all the better. No you will not be disqualified if you win it.... Good Luck

MikeJ ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 6:57 PM

So there's still time to enter your contest? I had thought that it had ended when the magazine contest ended?

Hmmmm...not apple polishing here MightyPete but I think you deserve at least a 6" wide by 3" height annoucement box print on the first page of the Renderosity Magazine after the cover under "Our Tribute To Those Done So Much To The Success Of The Renderosity Magazine"....or something like that! :)

MightyPete ( ) posted Tue, 08 January 2002 at 6:24 PM

No sorry you can't enter it anymore. We'll have the vote on the 15th here on this forum for the winner of the Vue contest. We got like 6 contestants so you got to love those odds. BTW have you looked at who is winning right now? The one with the earth in the background.... Hmmmm.
