Subject: Win XP and Poser4

OK, Now its my turn I guess. I just got a new system and it comes with Win XP. I have installed Poser 4 and it gives me the "You are out of Memory" message first thing. I installed the drivers from the ATI site, still no luck. Straight off the disk, or with the 118 upgrade - no difference. Screen resolution 1200 or 800 - no difference. Emulate Win 98 - no difference. I am at a loss. I can find nothing in earlier threads other than this. I disabled themes, but I do not use them anyway. I have no idea where to go for help.

I have XP and Pro Pack. It works real fine for me. I would try some things: 1. If you have normal Poser delete all the .rsr files in the geometries folder. 2. Increase the size of your swap file. 3. Defragment your drive. 4. Search for other new drivers (Motherbord, Mouse, ...) 2. Uninstall Poser, Reboot, Install Poser. I'm never comfortable with a preinstalled OS. If you have a real WinXP CD (not a "Recovery CD") scrub you HD and install XP new (preferable with the newest drivers and not those 'old' from your vendor.

thgeisel ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 4:19 AM

Im on XP and no probs with poser.Only thing I heard of, was ,if Poser and XP have different languages.Say :us poser and german XP. My system 20 gig HD with one partition of 4 gig for xp, second partition 16 gig poser and programs. 512 mb ram and a fixed swapfile of 500 mb for XP.

Jaager ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 4:26 AM

Poser will not even begin. New HD - no fragmentation No idea what to look for to affect swap file settings, a search of the term just gives glossery. It is a new computer - new install of Poser Did it 3 times - same wall. I recycled the Poser.rsr and it will not even get to "you are out of memory" - just flashes. Restoring rsr- It gets to the opening wall.

jenay ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 4:34 AM

i read sth. about virtual ram cache for the hard drive a time ago. if you have more than 512 MB RAM then windows reserves too much memory for itself - maybe this helps ?? don't remember where to look for ...

Puntomaus ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 4:37 AM

Maybe the main memory is damaged? We once had a problem with this out of memory thing as we installed an additional 256 MBRAM - as soon as we removed it everything worked fine again. We took it back to the shop and got another one that was ok.

MadYuri ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 5:00 AM

Do you have problems with other applications? Maybe the graphics card or your memory is bad. More things to try: 6. Have you tried to install Poser in a new location (C:Poser)? 7. Create a new XP user account and install Poser with this user.

I notice you mentioned ATI drivers, - I've found their attempts to make XP drivers pretty lame, perhaps you could try using a generic video driver? I assume you've installed the Poser 4.03 upgrade, and run scandisk, so my next suggestion would be to try using msconfig or services.msc (accessable thru Start->Run-> )to go through & turn off some of the superfluous muck that MicroSoft set up XP to run in the background by default. I've had no problems with XP & poser, but I went thru & turned off 84 unnecessary XP services & processes before I even started installing any apps. If nothing else, you might try the Tweak-XP forums (See link) for help from other Xp users. Couldn't hurt to EMail Curious Labs, either. I wish you luck, I'll likely be gone until late Saturday, if no other suggestions help, IM me, & I'll send you a list of other online resources I used to re-configure XP. Jerry B

Jaeger, I'm sorry I'm a bit fuzzy today. Did you say that you got all the latest Windows XP updates? I guarantee you there will be some even if you just installed XP on a computer today. My first stop is always the Windows Update site. Ron

JeffH ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 8:54 AM

Why are you using the beta patch? Get the real 4.03 patch from Curiouslabs. Also, make sure you are in the 32BIT Graphics mode. Poser hates ATI drivers, but usually will run in 32 BIT.

Hi, From bitter personal experience, (Currently ongoing) I can tell you that XP, while good, is not infallable. I'm running XP pro, vanila, no tweaks, or unsigned drivers, Norton, virus software, all XP specific, defragged. It still deleted my CD driver during a free space cleanup, and is still in an unknown, if stable state, and that's after I've been through the official "XP pro for admins" book, the (very good) help system, and all the diagnostics: "contact system vendor" Oh, it still "blue screens" too, takes longer to get there, and comes back up again afterwards, (impressive) but it still blue screens. installing everything, (every patch) is also a bad idea, the recent security upgrade killed a whole range of USB devices, (web cameras, etc.) stone dead, no explanation has been forthcoming. Check the link, and do *NOT* upgrade lightly. On the plus side, poser continued to work, regardless of the state of the OS, or the availability of the CD. later jb

Hi, This was the article I was looking for, had to track down the link at slashdot. later jb

Jaager ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 1:00 PM

First thing will be the MS updates for XP. I was not online with the new machine when I first booted, so I am naving a difficult time now getting the system to be a network. I just switch the NIC wire and was afraid to do more than install the cable software as a reinstall for fear of what a new install would do to the downstream connection with my old one. I ain't gonna be that easy. MS will not let me D/L an exe patch on my W-98 machine that I can port over it seems. Just getting the new one online looks to be a problem. Setting up a new computer gets worse with each generation. Jeff, ATI 32 - yes beta patch, because the only reported diff. is the logo and the bit about checking your network. I have two , but they are not a network, besides, there is only one port on the Ethernet card, so it is either cable modem or the other computer. There is a USB plug open

ronknights ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 2:46 PM

Jaeger, it sounds like you could be asking for trouble if you don't have that network working right. I bought a Linksys router. It took the place of my network hub, and allowed us to share the internet on our cable modem. We have Adelphia Powerlink, and don't need any special software. We just use Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express 6. I have Windows XP, and my wife's computer has Windows ME. Everything works just fine. We only need one NIC card in each computer. (Well, mine is an on-board network "Card.")

JeffH ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 2:54 PM

Sometimes the graphics default to something lower than 32 bit, 16 or 24. Are you sure it's set to 32 bit color?

Jackson ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 5:39 PM

Well, it may be too late since you've made all these changes already, but the first things I would have advised are: 1) check video driver and try a different one 2) turn off all virus programs 3) deactivate ALL power-saving features New systems usually come with #2 and #3 running and both can cause mucho problems until tweaked.

Jaager ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 5:46 PM

Jeff, highest quaility = 32bit that's what it says.

Jaager ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 5:56 PM

I have been turning off power saving bit by bit. I will disable Norton. I did what was supposed to update the video driver, I incurred a new ATI icon in the right hand task bar. I will get rid of the TSR programs that are not vital, so much work, just to get the nest situated. Maybe, if I poke around enough, something will shake loose, but not knowing what is wrong makes it more magic than anything else.

markdotcom ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2002 at 10:49 PM

I also am running Poser on an XP system with absolutely no trouble. Maybe I skipped over a post, but it sounds like you still haven't updated Poser since the install. I would highly recommend grabbing the latest Poser patch. 4.03 is available at www.curiouslabs.com.

Jaager ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 3:01 AM

I use the last update before CL was born. #118 It has worked just fine, this is the first that I have heard any indication that there is any substantive difference between 118 and 4.03 4.03 came out well before Win XP I will try that and see OK, I finally got on line and updated XP - Poser - no go. I ported over my poser.ini and preferredstate.pz3 (which is and empty stage, so no corrupt figure rsr is involved - no go. The reject is instantaneous.

Jaager I've been scanning a couple of XP forums & see a lot of problems with XP & ATI drivers. Especially the Radeon Drivers. If your new unit has that, some have reported using the beta release Driver version 6.13.10.6025 as a big improvement over the officially supported release Recommended Driver (6.13.3276) - There's also a mention of "the ATI support note to the effect that there is a bug in it which is that after changing driver properties the screen resolution has to be changed to VGA and back to whatever is the user default for the new proerties to be applied." Another user comments that substantial video problems have been corrected by this adjustment; Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services , scroll down to "IPSEC SERVICES", right-click on it and select "Stop". That's all I've found that appears related so far - did you ever try the changing to a generic VGA driver suggestion? That at least might give some indication. The only time I've ever had a problem with starting Poser was in my last computer, where a corrupt entry in my textures folder locked it up. A deep Scandisk cleared it up. I stopped using ATI products when I discovered how incredibly incompetent and indifferent their (lack of) product support was. I'll try a few more sources when I get home tomorrow, In the meantime; Good luck BTW - here's a site that purports to have the latest (01-31-2002) video drivers & info on ATI: http://www.rage3d.com

Jaager ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 4:37 AM

lg, thanks, I will try that.
I just have to figure out how to switch drivers
I do have Radon 8500 64

Jaager ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 5:06 AM

OK, I admit it, I am stubborm. The 4.03 upgrade did it. I guess the memory management fix was a difference between the beta and CL versions. This new system has 1 gig of RAM and Poser pretty much has a 60 gig HD to itself. This musta crossed the 2 gig . Now, will it render faster? Got on line too, The Cox support said I just should have plugged the modem in and not installed their software, their XP software version has bugs and XP will do it all anyway. Who knew? Now, on to Painter 6.

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 6:39 AM

Jaeger, I'm glad you finally have things going ok! So it all boiled down to installing the patch to Poser 4.03?! Wow, isn't it amazing how each things can be sometimes? Ron

Jaager ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 2:01 PM

Ron, you had to be here to see the hysteria about the patch when CL first released it. The network check triggered some firewalls and CL was accused of trying to commandeer everyone's computer. It was a trip. The information at the time was that 4.03 was 118, except for the logo and network check and an auto installer. Since 118 was the third update in a short time, I got weary of it and decided to wait and see about 4.03. There seems to be a bit more in there also. On my old system 118 does work as well as 4.03. The memory fix must have only been in 4.03 and my old system just did not trigger the bug. Going to a system with three times the RAM, six times the CPU and ten times the HD space obviously must have.

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 6:00 PM

Jaager, thanks for the history lesson. I took a big leap from Poser version 1 (1996) on ahead to Poser v 4.03 in 2001. By the time I had made that leap, the drama you mentioned was already over. Ron
